For some it is the completion of an education, for others it is only the beginning of more advanced studies, but for all students, no matter what their plans, high school is a preparation for the future. THE ODAROLOC staff has chosen as its theme this year, Plans for To- morrow. As The Builders, the faculty helps to mold the lives of the stu- dents, or The Material. The queens, the clubs and the sports are repre- sented respectively by The Honored, The Purpose and The Proving Grounds. 1. KA .fi wr. 1+ , . 9 , h if 14 .. The annual senior play is presented to the school on St. Nick's day just before the Christmas holidays. This year the senior class had the privilege of celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of this day. The Senior Prom, which is the first formal dance of the year, was held in January. Senior boys refereed at the Roughhouse, the annual junior-sophomore clash. Each grad- uating class presents the school with a class gift, This year the gift was a drinking fountain which is to be placed between the tennis courts. The end of the year is climaxed by Senior Week which is devoted to the many activities held in honor of the graduating class. Weather permitting, the class travels to Denver to spend a day at an amusement park. The class day breakfast is held at 5 in the morning, class day exer- cises given by the seniors in the afternoon contribute to the entertainment of the whole school. After the exercises the senior girls entertain their mothers at a tea. June 4, graduation crowns all these activities. Senior class sponsors are Miss Marion Park, Miss Ruth Densrnore and Raymond Kahl. f if TOP ROW: Dolores Barr GAA 2, 3, GR 2. ASSEMBLIES, parades, athletic contests and music week programs were among the many and varied events in which the band, directed by Randall Spicer, participated during the I946-47 school year. During football season the band performed in unique half-time dem- onstrations and traveled out-of-town frequently to boost the morale of the team. The band played at all rallies throughout the year, and a small pep band played at all home basketball games. IN addition to the many school activities in which the band takes an active part each year, it also makes appearances at many community activities. One of its traditional performances is given at the Christmas celebration sponsored each year by the city of Boulder at which time Santa Claus and Miss Merry Christmas make their annual visit. A major activity of the band is its participation in the state music contest held every spring for high school music groups and soloists. The contest was held this year at Greeley and Boulder entries-band, orchestra and choir-won top honors in all events for group competition. Boulder High's band, under the direction of Randall Spicer, won first place for marching in the Music festival parade and was rated superior for concert competition for Class A bands. Boulder High's orchestra, also directed by Mr. Spicer, was given a rat- ing of excellent. A number of solo and ensemble numbers also represented Boulder High in the Music festival. Boulder high school's choir, directed by Warner lmig, won high praise from the judges for its performance at the Festival. Choirs are not rated in the state contest, but each received written criticism from the judges. The high school music groups also made appearances during the an- nual Music week which, this year, was held early in May. SKI CLUB. AT lTS first meeting of the year members of the BHS Ski club elected the following officers: Bob Hatch, president, Frances Potts, vice-president, and Bob Gathers, secretary-treasurer. The most important activity of the club this year was a trip to Winter Park during Christmas vacation. Sub-zero temperatures, abundant snow and the derailment of the ski train added to the interest of all who partici- pated. Another trip, also to Winter Park, was to have been taken during spring vacation but had to be canceled because of the lack of transportation. Due to the efforts of Mrs. Betty Dawson, who with John Pederson was co-sponsor of the club, members also enjoyed the privilege of using the Buffalo Ski club buses this year. Bruner Heads Sports Staff Athletic activities in Boulder High have been covered during the past year by the Owl sports department, headed by Charles Bruner. Pictured here are members of the staff, Pete Brown, Charles Bruner, Bill Borman and Loy Del Holman. Odaroloc funds were derived from student body subscriptions, picture subscriptions from clubs and organ- izations and from the sale of adver- tising to Boulder merchants. The Odaroloc staff sponsored many all-school dances including all dances after basketball games, in a further drive to raise funds. Further efforts to secure financial aid were made jointly by the Owl and Odaroloc staffs by producing the an- nual Cub-sponsored Vodvil. The two staffs and the Cubs worked to- '-3-rfisffe .. ee V l lv , SSN gether this year in presenting the show and the proceeds were used for the publication of the Odaroloc. THE National Thespian Dramatic Honor society has a chapter in Boulder high school known as Troupe 60. A regularly enrolled student of satisfac- tory scholarship who has played with merit in school plays or who has done work on the stage approved by the Troupe sponsor is eligible for member- ship. Superior work in drama classes or radio broadcasting may also help to accumulate points for eligibility. Boulder High's group in 1946-47 held meetings depending upon the enthusiasm of the members. Jim Reich presided over the group as presi- dent, Joe Bergheim served as vice-president and Jane Valentine was secre- tary-treasurer during the past year. Miss Ada Burton sponsored the Thes- plans. Three dramatic productions were presented at Boulder high school this year. Dear Ruth was given as the first production, No- vember 7, with Jane Valentine, Joe Bergheim and Joan Curtis playing leading roles. The annual St. Nick's day play this year was Our Town with Jim Reich, Joan Hibler and Charles Love heading the cast. The final production, Abe Lincoln in Illinois, starred Laurence DeMuth with supporting roles being taken by Charlotte Brown ond Mary Ann O'Neill. li0ULllI+1Il IIIGII SUIIINIL CIIEERLEAIIEIIS Lora Hall, Keith Carpenter, Wayne Luckel, Mory Frances Lauren W Mayan' X Q x r 4 . 7 . ALTHOUGH there was a delay in the starting of the I946 football sea- son due to an epidemic of poliomyelitis, football got under way and the Panthers still played their regular three pre-season games with South Den- ver, Colorado Springs and East Denver. T ln Northern conference play Boulder lost to the Wildcats of Greeley and defeated all of its remaining opponents to finish in a tie with the Fort Collins Lambkins. A playoff was necessary and Boulder won 27 to l4. The Purple and Gold gridsters met the Fort Morgan Maroons in district playoffs and trampled the Morgan eleven 26 to 6, thus earning their way to the state finals. Pueblo Centennial was the opponent of the Panthers in the state finals held at Pueblo on December l4, l9-46. Although the Panthers lost l3 to 7 they outplayed the Bulldogs of Centennial in every way and earned the praise of every Boulder and Pueblo fan. Four Panthers placed on the all-state teams picked by the various papers. Joe Nix, halfback, made first team all-state, while Jim Brunton, guard, Roger Stokes, end, and Bill Borman, tackle, were placed on the second team all-state. l X-5. X. BASKETBALL A SQUAD. BOULDER'S participation in the state football finals caused the Panther hoopsters to play their opening three pre-season games without regular starters. After losing these opening three the Panther cage squad went on to win the remaining practice games. In Northern conference play the Panthers' only defeat came at the hands of the Greeley Wildcats and so the season closed with one defeat and nine wins for the conference season. The Panthers entered state as first place by way of a tossed coin and downed College High of Greeley 47 to l9 in the first state game. The Manual Bricklayers were next defeated by the Panthers 37 to 2l. In the finals a hot South Denver quintet clipped the Panthers 45 to 36 to win the state basketball championship over Boulder. The Panther A squad will lose six seniors who are to graduate in June. The seniors include Roy Morris, Roger Stokes, Richard Nicholson, Bill Carr, John Lewis and Bill Riethmiller. Dale Seymour, Clinton Draper, Roy Shepherd, Jack Dillman, Ray Sword, Charles Gathers, Dean Williams, Bob Bruce Laverne Allen, Duane Autrey, Gary Joseph and Jerry Wolney. ll SllUilll .. cfs' PLAYING under the watchful eye of Coach LeRoy Opdycke the Boulder basketball B squad players turned in a successful season this year. They completed conference play with a record of eight wins and two losses over the second teams of other schools in the Northern conference. ln the games played this year the juniors and sophomores on the B squad displayed some promising talent and these prospective players will carry the hopes of Panther teams in future years. Sophomores on the team who will have two more years of eligibility are Dale Seymour, Roy Shepherd, Clint Draper, Ray Sword, Laverne Allen, Bob Bruce, Jack Dillman, Duane Autrey and Charles Gathers. Juniors on the team were Wayne Williams, Dick Stoneman, Howard Ray, Robert Platts, Jim Flatt and Dean Williams. Many of these boys played in the A squad games and will form the nucleus of next year's team. WRESTLING .. WRESTLING in its third year at Boulder High showed much improvement as the Panther matmen turned in their most successful season. Head Coach Keith Bowen, a new faculty member at BHS, and Assist- ant Coach Paul Rose, manual arts instructor, worked with the boys inter- ested and produced a well-rounded team of grapplers. l ln the Northern conference wrestling tournament the Panthers capped third place and claimed championships in three weights. Boulder matmen who placed are Tom Pyle, second, 95 lb. class, Ramon McGuire, second, lO3 lb., Alan Lacy, fourth, l2O lb., Chuck Keatley, first, 133 lb., Jesse Hooper, first, l38 lb., Joe Nix, first, 165 Ib., Kenneth Klein- holz, third, l75 Ib., and Tom Hetzer, third, heavyweight. Chuck Keatley also placed fourth in state competition. Returning Lettermen: Front row-Jim Buchanan, Wallace Tanner, Bob LeMarr, Roger Stokes, John Lewis, Howard Hun singer Second row-Joe Nix, Wayne Williams, Jesse Hooper and Forrest Smith. TRACK .. UOACH Ed Swinscoe, assisted by Coach Clyde Gelwick, had a turnout of about 70 boys when he issued his first call for track enthusiasts at Boulder High March 24. Eight returning lettermen bolstered the hopes of the squad as they pre- pared for the annual dual meet with Longmont on April ll. On April i8 the squad journied to Longmont to take part in a triangular meet with Long- mont and Loveland. All the teams in the state were preparing to strive for honors in the important meets. First it was the Colorado university relays in Boulder, April 26, the Northern Colorado track meet in Fort Collins, May 3, the Northern conference meet at Loveland, May lO, and the state high school meet in Boulder, May l7. Lettermen returning from last year's squad were Wayne Williams, Jesse Hooper, Roger Stokes, Wallace Tanner, Joe Nix, Howard Hunsinger, Bob LeMarr, Jim Buchanan and Forrest Smith. These men carried much of the load for the Panthers, but many of the sophomores and juniors on the squad showed promising talent and should round out future Boulder teams in every department.
