Footbal l Our Panther gridders, under the direction of Coach LeRoy Opdycke, got off to a slow start in the defense of their I943 state crown, but found themselves mid- way through the season and finished with a rush to annex second place in the Northern league standings. The Fort Collins Lambkins had only one mishap on their schedule, that being a 6-6 tie with Greeley, and they went on to take the championship. Greeley, Englewood, Longmont, and Loveland finished behind the local lads in that order. John Gilliam, guard, Ray Jump, center, and Bill Simons, halfback, were se- lected on the all-conference team. Gilliam and Jump are seniors while Simons has one year of competition remaining. Boulder played eight games during the season, winning five, losing two and tying one. Boulder seniors who played their last game against the Trojans on Armistice Day were: Ends, Tom Nix and Bob Culver, Tackles, Dick Rogers and Dick Behr- mann, Guards, John Downing, John Gilliam, Gene Becker and Danny Stark, Cen- ters, Ray Jump and Tommy Thompson, and Backs, Eddie Myers, Ben Chaney, Larry Geolfos, Ted Zeigler and Ralph Schrader. LeRoy Opdycke was head coach and had charge of the fast-moving Panther backfield. He was very ably assisted by Ed Swinscoe who handled the tough Pan- therline. Basketball Summary After capturing the runner-up spot in the 1944 state class A basketball tournament, the Boulder Panther cagers came back this year to annex their first co-championship in the history of the Northern league. The Purple and Gold clad boys lost their only conference battle to Fort Collins' Lambkins, eventual state champions. Playing their second year under the directions of Coach LeRoy Opdycke, the Boulderites put a very green team on the hardwood at the beginning of the sea- son. Kendall Hills, junior center, was the only regular returning from the '44 squad. However, after losing three practice games and winning three, the Pan- thers suddenly came to and defeated the highly touted Lambkins, 31-28, on the BHS floor. The next week, Boulder suffered a let-down and had a tough battle before whipping Loveland, 39-29. Our basketeers rolled through the rest of the first round, defeating Englewood, 40-23, Greeley, 37-31, and Longmont, 35-26. Fort Collins, the Panthers next opponent, showed their prowess by trampling Boulder, 56-29, in the Lambkin crackerbox . Loveland again fell before the Purple and Gold, losing out, 42-36. The Panthers downed Englewood, 58-31, Greeley, 51-30, and finished a successful league season by overwhelming their arch-rivals, Lonq- mont, 42-32, in the Trojan gymnasium. --ubfiifl ULDQX 4 L l In , C E QUT-D3 6001.030 ' H B SQUAD-BASKETBALL Back row left to right-Coach LeRoy Opdycke Nicholson Nix Daven ort' Second row , 1 1 I D 1 -Buchanan, Lewis, Albrighton, Borman, First row-DeRusl'1a, Boch, Carr, Love and Bruner. Journeying to the state meet, Boulder faced the powerful Denver Manual quintet, and in a see-saw battle, lost to the Thunderbolts by a score of 47-45. The locals then roared back to smash Sterling, 45-l9, and on the following day defeated Colorado Springs, 40-39, to annex the class A consolation champion- Ship. Playing on the Panther A squad during the past season were seven seniors, four juniors, and one sophomore. The seven seniors were Tom Nix, Bill Gragg, Harold Beattie, Ernie Fuller, Bill Todd, Ben Chaney and Ray Jump. Kendall Hills, Warren Boyd, Bill Leslie and John Smith were the juniors and Roger Stokes was the lone sophomore. However, Sophomore Bill Carr alternated with Smith. Beattie was named on the second all-state team. Following is a summary of the Panther basketball season: NORTHERN CONFERENCE GAMES PRACTICE GAMES Boulder 3l ........... Representative of Boulder high school's attempt to aid in the war effort and to prepare for the post-war period is the organization known as the Civil Air Patrol Cadets which was organized in Boulder last fall as a part of the Civil Air Patrol. Membership was open to high school students and approximately 75 BHS students joined. The Cadets meet regularly each Monday for a two-hour session. Half of it is spent in drilling and half in study. This summer they are to go out to the municipal airport to be given orientation flights and study motors and other topics connected with flying. Ten members of the local group are also to be sent to Lowry Field in Denver for two weeks basic aeronautical training sometime during the summer vacation. Numerous cadets took a test which qualified them for a third-class radio operator's license. First Lt. Francis Reich, local secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, heads the CAP here with Warrant Officer Byron Alexander, BHS teacher, leader of the Cadets. Staff Sergeant Marjorie Baron, also a BHS instructor, serves as his assist- ant. Other CAPC officers include First Sergeant Kendall Hills, Communications Sergeant Bill Londen, Training Sergeant Charles Reich, Supply Sergeant Harriet Reed, Adjutant Sergeant Gerald King, and Intelligence Sergeant Laurence Paddock.
