V - K ri Seniors 1 Blcliee The seniors can pride themselves on having a very suc- cessful year under the leadership of their class officers, Presi- dent liarbara Mc-Kee and 'Treasurer Joe Enright. Due to the efforts ot' the class. a new senior boys' pep club, Boosters, was organized. The combined strength ot' this club and the sen- ior girls' group, the Pubs, produced a successful Boosters' Vodvil. The majority of our clubs advanced this year mainly under senior leadership. On St. Nick's Day, according to tra- dition, the class presented a play, The Caf and Hu' Cfuzury. To some extent the seniors dominated the sports field this year. Many senior boys received major football letters and the first string basketball team was composed entirely ot' sen- iors. The class was fortunate this year in having such capable sponsors and willing advisors as Marion Park and Donald Linn. 'rchestva This year. for the seventh consecutive year, the Boulder High School orchestra won a first division rating in the State Contest conducted in Denver. The orchestra, which several times has been voted one of the finest in the state and which won a first division rating in the National Contest at Colorado Springs in 1939, now is composed of 56 members and has been growing steadily since 1924, when it was organized. A large part of the orchestra's success can be attributed to the fine leadership of Hugh McMillen, who took over the orchestra in 1935. In one year from that date the orchestra developed from a division three rating to division one, and also it increased considerably in membership. Our orchestra during the course of 18 years has passed through the hands of six directors, each of whom contributed greatly to the orcrestra's success. The orchestra members are: Harold Goddard, Ila Jean Davis, Ila Mae Dean, Herman Dilmore, Betty Erickson, Alan Olsen, Janet Ridsdale, Betty Jean Tune, Dorothy Jean Wilson, Fern Coss, David Frazier, Bert Christian, Annabel Ball, Daisy Skelley, Nita Townsend, Consoella Ward, Dorothy Hutton, Carlton Randleman, Iris Muncy, Betty Viele, Dick Biggs. Starting with, on the whole, an inexperienced team, Coaches Gelwick and Lefferdink did a marvelous job of whipping into shape a team that amazed even the experts by defeating every team in the conference that they played except the Lambkins from Fort Collins. The 1941 football season was one of the most successful in two decades and will be remem- bered for years to come to students and faculty alike. Showing excellent form for so early in the season, the purple and gold Panthers rode roughshod over the North Denver Vikings, and held them scoreless for three quarters and 123 minutes, the Vikings scoring their only touchdown in the last two minutes of play. In what later turned out to be the most important game of the season, the Panthers and the Lambkins battled through four quarters of superior football to a 6-6 tie. lf' either team had been able to make the point after touchdown, that team would have won the conference championship. The Panthers took an easy victory from the Greeley Wildcats, never letting the Wildcats get within 20 yards of the goal line. ln one of the slowest games of the season, the Panthers took an easy game from the Loveland Indians. Final score: Boulder 13, Loveland 0. ln the first out-ol'-town game, the Panthers started on the first down and made a touchdown. From then on the game was a rout. Englewood finally made its only in-the-last-minute score against the third team from Boulder. 1'!.' This game was a surprise after the success Boulder had in the pre-season games. The Panthers defeated the Loveland Indians on their own court 235 to 19. After the defeat of the previous week, our boys worked hard the entire game. Claude Hagerman was high scorer for the evening by collecting five free throws. Boulder marked up another victory after defeating Englewood 42 to 12. The honor of high scorer of the game was held by Hardy Brafford. Showing mid-season form the Panther Quintet easily defeated the Wildcats 41 to 21. Boulder was intent on revenge for the two defeats handed them last year. Again Hardy Brafford, the classy forward of the Purple and Gold Quintet, was high scorer. The Purple and Gold was paced to victory by the cool playing of Tom Collins, All-Conference guard. The Lambkins were led by Wilbur Gar- field. Claude Hagerman was high scorer. Longmont again defeated Boulder in the nrst game of the second round by their marvelous team work. The Panthers' high scorer again was Claude Hagerman. Loveland received its second defeat from Boulder by a score of 29 to 18. Tom Collins was outstanding by making seven charity tosses. Boulder 49, Englewood 17. Need we say more? The Greeley team rallied throughout the second quarter to bring the score from 3 to 133 at the end of the first quarter to 19-19 at the half. Boulder recovered in the third quarter to make the score 31 to 24. Boul- der scored six free throws in the last quarter to win 37-32. Center, Jack Worthington, was high point man. ln the last game of the season Boulder's overconfident Panthers lost to the Lambkins 25 to 28. This put Boulder in second place in the League Sending us to the state tournament. In the first game of the state basketball tourney, the Panthers came from behind in the last five seconds of play to defeat College high 29-28. The South Denver Rebels upset the favored Panthers in a semi-final game by rallying late in the game to overcome a Boulder lead. S. track mentors, a track squad was turned out that showed exceptional power and flash in some spots. All through an eight meet schedule the team was kept at top efficiency by hard after-school practice. Track gained a little in popularity with the students this year, although student attendance at track meets was not up to what could have been wished for. In the first cinder meet, the Boulder High Panthers were forced to bow in the traditional feud between the Longmont Trojans and the Purple and Gold bearers of B. H. S. Although the Panthers showed power in the sprints, Longmont captured the weights. In the second meet of the year with Lafayette, the Panthers over- whelmed the squad from there. Not losing a first in the whole meet, the Panthers ran up a tremendous score, allowing the Lafayette boys only a few seconds, thirds and fourths. At the four-way invitational track meet at Fort Collins, Boulder High's thinclads took a second place, the Lambkins taking the first posi- tion. It is interesting to note that the Panthers did beat the Longmont Trojans in their second clash. Boulder had three first places all taken by Fred Wilshusen. In the Colorado Relays the Panthers took the fourth place. The first four positions were won by Fort Collins, East High, South High, and Boul- der, in that order. Other positions were taken by Longmont, Centennial, and West Denver. Other meets attended by the Panthers were: Triangular meet, Boul- der, Longmont, Loveland, Longmont dual at Boulder, League meet at Lovelandg and the state meet at Boulder. The track squad consisted of: Phil Brafford, Darrol Childerson, Fred Wilshusen, Noland Gregory, Jay Platt, Roland Gregory, Wayne Brown, Bob Kamp, Keith Johnson, Harland Sampson, Walter Tickle, Rodney James, John Parker, Herman Dilmore, Bill Aseniero, Harvey Platts, Arthur Archuletta, Eugene Wells, Bill Ostrander, Jim Reed, Gene Leist, Gordon McLean, Don Weathers, Leslie Ketcheson, George Lewis, Larry Rosetta, Lincoln Crall, Lloyd Ceiber, Buddy Warner, Frank Archuletta, Roscoe Wisner, Pete Thompson, Micky Trent, Jim Carr, Bill Bergman,, Alan Olsen, Howard Brodt, Jim Zeigler, Bud Renlund. Golf cmd Tennis l'nder the coaching of Joe Enright, the lloulder lligh linksmen this year really went to town. VVith some ol' the squad that won last year's championship, the Panthers this year had one of' the best golf' teams in many years. ln the first match ol' the season with the Longmont Trojans, the Pan- thers won hands down from the Trojans and pointed f'or the next match with Colorado Springs. In the second match, the Panthers took the men from the Springs to a cleaning to the tune of' ll-1. Although this was only the second match of' the season, the Panther golf' men showed mid-season f'orm. Other matches were played with other teams in the Northern f'onf'erence. The members of' the traveling squad were usually Henry Hutchinson, Dale Hart, Don Leonard, Rob Haring. and Clifford George. l'nder the direction of the new tennis coach, John H. Walter, the tennis team this year started out with a bang. More students came out for tennis this year than could be accommodated on the courts. The tennis activities were started early in the fall of' the year by a ladder being drawn up, anyone who wished a place on the ladder was given one according to his record in the past. Matches were scheduled with Longmont and Greeley, but an early winter prevented these matches In the past years, it has been a custom to place all interested in tennis in a club, but this year this was changed inasmuch as all interested were placed on a squad under the direction of' the coach, John Walter ln the first match of' the year, the Panthers swept to an easy victory over the net men from Longmont. .sf C'lll'ZEHI,lCADEHS The Cheerleaders this year did the best job of' bolstering school spirit that has been done f'or many years. In rallys in the gym, interesting speakers were always presented. Nearly all the out- of'-town games were attended by the four cheerleaders, and usually the Iloul- der cheering section made more noise than any of' their opponents. New uni- forms were purchased for them, and they were showed off to the best advan- tage. Morale was kept high all through the various seasons of' football, basket- ball and track. All cheerleaders were seniors, they were: Wally Reed, Ellis Palmer, Betty Fitzgerald and Peggy Fitzgerald. l MANAGERS W T ' Student managers for the three ma- N, WT .ior sports of Boulder High were: Foot- ball-Wilfred James, Sr.: Gareth Tan- ner, Jr.: Bum Basher, Soph.g Basket- ball- Willie Fowler, Sr.: John Pad- dock, Jr., Ronny Carlson, Soph.3 Track -Wally Reed, Sr., Dave Corbin, Jr.: Sid Andrews, Soph.
