'I as T' Grchestra Members of S P S and c1t1zens of Boulder never cease to marvel at the prod1g1ous progress wh1ch has been made by our Orchestra and Band under the guldance and capable d1rect1on of Mr Normann An orchestra of some forty pleces has lmproved 1mmensely durlng the year The orchestra made a number of mformal appearances 1n Chapel durmg the year that helped the students to become better acquamted wlth some of the finer pleces of muslc The Orchestra made 1ts real debut at the opera The Plrates of Pen zance The opera was pronounced a wonderful success due a great deal to the efforts of Mr Normann and the members of the orchestra The next event was the concert gxven at Macky on May 6 by the orchestra band and combined glee clubs whxch everybody enjoyed The last but by far not the least was the state contest 1n whlch the orchestra won more honors for Prep school H331 l 9 3 0 - X V .K-. DAROLOC 1 9 3 0 Football Champ1ons 1n every sense of the word ns the t1tle the Purple and Gold grldsters earned durmg the season of 1929 by out fightmg and over powermg every obstacle that presented ltself throughout thxs most trxumphant season of 1929 Coach John Wxtte myer and Assxstant Coach james Plnckney proved themselves complete masters of the s1tuat1on by whxppmg a squad of men many of them w1th no experlence at all mto the most formxdable and best balanced eleven the Denver Boulder League has seen ln several seasons and brxngmg home the gxgantlc sxlver reproductxon of the Yale Bowl emblematlc of the Denver Boulder League football champlonshxp The Purple and Gold aggregatlon opened the season by droppmg 1ts first practnce t1lt to the Loveland Indians by a 6 to 0 count after a rather ragged exhxbltnon In the thlrd tllt the Prep eleven proved themselves extremely dangerous by defeatmg the state champlons of 1928 the Pueblo Central Wlldcats 1n Pueblo 15 to 12 In the first home game West Denver Cowboys who were at that txme rated as the best ln the League suffered a 18 to 6 drubbmg at the hand of the Prepxtes It was Preps contest all the way the Purple and Gold out playlng the 1928 champxons m every department of the game Although playmg m a blmdmg snowstorm Prep was able to defeat Longmont 1n the tradxtlonal Armlstlce Day game by rollmg up a 31 to 0 score The Boulder eleven next journeyed to Denver and handed North a neat lacmg wlth apparently lnttle or no trouble smce the game ended wlth the score 18 to 0 The South game played at the Prep field was undoubtedly the most sensatlonal of the season the Purple and Gold scormg the touchdown that knotted the count 6 to 6 m the final mmute of play Thxs was undoubtedly the most thrlllmg CXhlbltlOl'l durmg the entlre League season The Champlonshlp clash m whlch the East Hxgh Angels fur mshed the competltlon was another thrxller endmg wxth the score 20 to 12 for the Purple and Gold and gxvmg the Conference Champs an unblemlshed record for the League season of 1929 IKO The Manual team was defeated in the first conference clash after a hard battle. 4 I DAROLOC 1 9 ACTION BY THE FOOTBALL SQUAD l31 I DAROLOC 9 I J DAROLOC ISI G 1930 DAROLOC A - 1 9 3 0 Basketball After gettlng off to a bad start the Purple and Gold basketeers staged the most spectacular come back ln the hlstory of the mst1tut1on wlndmg up mld way ln the percentage column Durmg a hard practlce schedule the Prep quintet looked almost unbeatable wmnmg all of thelr tllts by decxslve margms scormg regularly and play and South captured the conference opener by the count of 25 to 16 The Purple and Gold came to thelr own after bowmg to West East and North respectlvely Manual was the first vxctlm of the Preps taklng a nlce drubblng to the tune of Z5 to 16 Thls game wxll be remembered as Nelson s last hlgh school exhtbltlon and the lanky plvot man turned ln a wonderful game Slnce Coach Wxttemeyer was then confronted wxth the problem of Hllmg the shoes of the veteran center he plcked Stoffle a Trlp can dldate who had everythlng but experlence Stoffle later m the season gave way t Collms another Trlp In the next league contest South was glven a GCCISIVC beatlng whlch avenged the defeat suffered at the hands of the Rebels ln the league opener Prep then lost a hard battle to East the league champlons A week later the Purple and Gold met the West Hx Cowboys and defeated them Captam Hogue held Clay Davis the league s leadxng scorer scoreless Collms who tasted league play for the hrst tlme m thus fracas gathered ten pomts and establlshed an lmmedxate reputatlon North and Manual durmg the next two weeks were defeated ln Denver endmg the 1929 30 schedule After dropping the Fnrst four games Prep came back strong and defeated every team ln the league except the champlons and even defeated the runners up twlce The Purple and Gold by wmnmg 5 and loslng 5 txed for thlrd place Those who recexved letters were Capta1n Hogue Grosvenor Baker Owens Nelson Stoffle Hays Captam elect Collms and Manager Gulney IW!
