The Cougar football team made it to KingCo playoffs before being stopped. Their over-all record was 6-4, their KingCo 6-2. They lost their first play-off game to a strong Newport squad. The Cougs started their workout at Fort Lewis. We knew we had a contender. . .the famous Ranger Mile, commented Coach Dee Hawkes. They started the season slowly, losing their first halves, but all season the second halves belonged to the Cougars, explained the coach. The Cougs had super senior leadership of 2-year lettermen: Mark Beeston, Ben Betts, Kevin Bueing, Kirk Correll, Mark Crabb, Bob Kaskes, Barry King, Kole Kinkade, Steve Manson, Dave Moore, Mike Nelson, Joe Shaffett, Bret White and Dan Wright. The team, with a starting line up of: Shaffet LE, Doug Webster LT, Bueing LG, Kaskes OC, Gary Sturm RG, Manson RT, Correll LH, Crabb RH, Mike Donnelly FB, Moore QB, Kinkade RE, Bob King End, White End, Rick Schwindt DT, Dan Worthington DT, Wright Nose, King LB, Dave Irvine LB, Brian Sedy CB, Mike Bertram CB, Jim Ross DS, Clark Carlile Rover, hung in there, even when victory seemed so far off. The team will miss the seniors, but their work on defense will be felt for years to come, the coach predicted. Coach Hawkes said, The i980 team can stand proudly for providing all of the fans one mighty exciting season. Ten Bothell players were named to the KingCo All-Conference team. Named to the first team were Kevin Bueing, offense, and Dan Wright, defense. Second team members were Joe Shaffett and Barry King. Coaches Ron Wayman, Russ Quackenbush, and Gene Girdley pushed for- ward, but injuries interfered. A tough BHS vs IHS game went into overtime, but was sadly lost 19 to 21. The Jay-Vees Enthusiasm and determina- tion kept the JV football team going. Fun wasn't their only gain, but lots of experience also. The team's win-loss records flexed more up than down this year.
