CLASS HISTORY We, the Senior Class, look forward to what life holds for us in the future, which, 1 hope, will be very successful for us; but we love to look back and recall our pleasant experiences during our past high school days here at Botetourt. We came to Botetourt High School as proud freshmen in 1938, because, at last, we could say that we were students in high school, something for which we had worked several years. Though we had such a fine sponsor as Miss Stuart Jones to guide our class during the year, we had too little time to give plays, and entertainments because our studies kept us too busy burning the midnight oil. In 1939, we gladly returned to school as sophomores, cordially greeting our old friends and quickly making friends with the new students in the school. With Ada Oliver as our president, and Miss Linthicum as our sponsor, we had a very successful year. By 1940, we had reached the midway mark of our high school career, as we again entered Botetourt’s portals, this time as high school juniors. Mrs. Anderton was our sponsor while Ada Oliver again headed the class as president. Ethel Thomas served as vice-president, and Trevilian Kerns served as secretary and treasurer.

Now, with saddened hearts, we are watching the last days of our high school career slip slowly past. We now realize what happy days they have been, and there is scarcely one of us who would not want to relive them. This year we have had the pleasure of having Miss Thornhill as our sponsor. Ethel Thomas was our president, and Kenneth Smith was our vice-president. Ada Oliver has had the task of serving as our secretary, while Trevilian Kerns has acted as treasurer. Our officers, backed by the hue support of the other class members, have guided us through what is probably our most successful year. Particularly did we enjoy staging the play “Boarding School.” Now we are Seniors, ready for grad 1 ation. Our emotions are torn between ioy and sorrow; we are happy because this year we have seen the result of four years of hard work come to an end, and as we march up to receive our diplomas, our shoulders will be thrown back as we realize that we have made the grade and succeeded where many fail. Our hearts will be heavy with sorrow as we realize that we must leave the companionship of the many friends we have made here at Botetourt during these years. Wherever we may go, we will carry with us the high ideals which we have acquired at Botetourt, and wherever we go, we will always remember the many friends of our high school days here. Margery Abernathy, Class Historian.
