Ex Libris ETHEL THOMAS Editor ADA OLIVER Business Manager BOTETOURT HIGH SCHOOL Gloucester, Virginia When, in a pensive mood, you dwell again within these high school walls, and live again this school year, the vividness will fade as the bright light of day into the sunset afterglow of memory. As the twilight hides the harshness of the land¬ scape, so is the bitterness of disappointment for¬ gotten. You smile, and wish that you could put the memory in a frame and hang it on the wall, to look at. Through written words, through photograph, through toil if not talent, we have tried to do that for you. Here is your picture. Read into this picture of an unfolding year at BOTETOURT the personal story of your high school days—-smile—and we shall be satisfied. DICATION With the knowledge that within their counsel there is so much love, and peace, and a deeper, calmer faith for us to seek; and because it is they who have been always most interested in our well-faring, we dedicate this, the SECOND POST of 1942 to OUR PARENTS MR. JONES, JR LOUISE DEAL AUDREY BROWN CLASS HISTORY We, the Senior Class, look forward to what life holds for us in the future, which, 1 hope, will be very successful for us; but we love to look back and recall our pleasant experiences during our past high school days here at Botetourt. We came to Botetourt High School as proud freshmen in 1938, because, at last, we could say that we were students in high school, something for which we had worked several years. Though we had such a fine sponsor as Miss Stuart Jones to guide our class during the year, we had too little time to give plays, and entertainments because our studies kept us too busy burning the midnight oil. In 1939, we gladly returned to school as sophomores, cordially greeting our old friends and quickly making friends with the new students in the school. With Ada Oliver as our president, and Miss Linthicum as our sponsor, we had a very successful year. By 1940, we had reached the midway mark of our high school career, as we again entered Botetourt’s portals, this time as high school juniors. Mrs. Anderton was our sponsor while Ada Oliver again headed the class as president. Ethel Thomas served as vice-president, and Trevilian Kerns served as secretary and treasurer. Now, with saddened hearts, we are watching the last days of our high school career slip slowly past. We now realize what happy days they have been, and there is scarcely one of us who would not want to relive them. This year we have had the pleasure of having Miss Thornhill as our sponsor. Ethel Thomas was our president, and Kenneth Smith was our vice-president. Ada Oliver has had the task of serving as our secretary, while Trevilian Kerns has acted as treasurer. Our officers, backed by the hue support of the other class members, have guided us through what is probably our most successful year. Particularly did we enjoy staging the play “Boarding School.” Now we are Seniors, ready for grad 1 ation. Our emotions are torn between ioy and sorrow; we are happy because this year we have seen the result of four years of hard work come to an end, and as we march up to receive our diplomas, our shoulders will be thrown back as we realize that we have made the grade and succeeded where many fail. Our hearts will be heavy with sorrow as we realize that we must leave the companionship of the many friends we have made here at Botetourt during these years. Wherever we may go, we will carry with us the high ideals which we have acquired at Botetourt, and wherever we go, we will always remember the many friends of our high school days here. We’ll go out as young women and young men To pilot our ships o’er life’s sea; But we have a firm foundation to work on; Home-training, schooling, and honesty. As we go out to meet great problems, As in life’s journey we all have to do, We’ll challenge each one with a smile and say; Let them come, we’ll see them through. We’ll not disappoint those who have worked so hard To pilot us o’er life’s sea; We’ll show them that we have the will power To be what they want us to be. —Katherine Nuttall, Class Poet. In our country ' s present all-out Defense effort, timber is playing an increasingly important part. Right forest planning TODAY here in Virginia is vital to assure adequate timber supplies for the use of our people and industrial plants 30 years hence. Leave plenty of Seed Trees to assure land coming back to Pine. Selectively cut your timber that you may have merchantable timber to market at all times. Plant pine seedlings if land has been denuded through over cutting.
