We like to think our educational program has been a firm spoke in pub- lio life. Mrs. Horna Lynch Iu appreciation of bar devote does to dutyâwhether it be letters for Mr. Wolf, errands for students or teaohersâor that seoond-nile favor for everyone that so «any of us forgetâthe Echoes Staff proudly dedicates the 1965 edition to our NORMA OF OUR A For a number of years, Boswell studente have not had an opportunity to develop their artistic abilities. Art was not included in their curriculum until the 1964-65 school year. Dave Brost, Jeff Mitchell, and Mike Flynn seem to be enjoying their study of dimension. PREVIEW Substitute teachers, sometimes difficult to find, pose no problem for Mrs. Kopka. Max Gretenoord is handling English 12 and Mrs. Kopka is proving that she is an interested student. During the past year, interest in sub- jects related to science has grown and the department at Boswell High School has expanded in olassslze and in equip- ment. Mr. Calhoun found new equipment a valuable asset to his department but felt a definite need for more. VARIOUS Chemistry students, Max Gretenoord,Den- nis Nunnally, Ernie Brown, and Dave Doeden are observing the behavior of solid copper immersed in a water solu- tion of the compound silver nitrate. DEPARTMENTS 5 9 BUILDING IMPROVE Dave Dimmich, Student Council President, invites you to enter the new room built in the back part of the old study hall. This room is now used for mathematics classes taught by Mr. Hambay. Repointing of the briok building in the school year 1960-1961 was the first step in an extensive remodeling program to improve existing facilities at Boswell. Reconstruction of the lower hall Joined east and west building wingsâpermitting free access to all parts of the basement level. During the summer of 1963, a new grade room was completed to accommodate in- creasing enrollment. The summer of 1964 included the painting of seven class- rooms, sanding and refinishing of the floors of the Home Economics rooms, re- finishing of all classroom floors, and repainting stairs, restrooms, and hall- way floors. Basement repairs included new restroom drainage system and repair of boiler stoker. The first step of a two-year complete rewiring system was finished with the installation of reset panels on each floor. 6 MENTS AID ART INSTRUCTIONS Mrs. Slater and her children pose with the type of furniture found in grade rooms one through three. Construction of a new classroom in the west part of the study hall, and moving of the library to the study area in the east end of the study hall, provided a new math area. The room previously used for math on the second floor became the art center. With the return of art to our curriculum, much hidden talent was uncovered. lew furniture for the first, seoond, and third grade rooms completed the improve- ments. Gary Stone, Kris Kramer, and Philip Goodwine prepare puppets which were displayed at the annual Open House. A portion of the study hall showing library and study areas. 7 NEW LOCATION DEMANDS MORE ASSISTANTS The new study-hall location necessitated a library assistant for every period of the school day. Use of library cards, checking the amount of time spent in the library and the type of reading being done has been an improvement over the former signed class pass. Boswell's library assistants are members of JELA and with their librarian, Mrs. Olive Kopka, attended the annual student assistants' convention at Purdue in November. Over one thousand student librarians were in atten- dance. The library files are really beginning to pay off as term paper sources âmany teachers bring their classes to the new library. Mrs. Olive Kopka consults card file in search of a book needed by a student for class report. LIBRARY ASSISTANTS: Judy Wakeman, Chris Morgan, Brenda Rhodes, Teri Krill, Senora Shackelford, Joyce Fix. Seated: Jenny Cooper and Kay Finley 8 JUNIOR DANCE Wicki Cox and Vida Robertsonâconcentration or relaxation? ELECTS SWEETHEART Allen Shepperd, FFA president, presents a sweetheart jacket to Rosie Clement, as Mr. Wayne Buck, club advisor, looks on approvingly. Every year the local chapter selects fro rural background, a sweetheart who has qualities of leader- ship, scholarship and personality. FRIENDS,ROMANS, COUNTRYMEN- LENDMEYOUR EARS Boswell juniors, seniors, and faculty who lent an ear to an invitation to a Roman Holiday, banqueted Roman style in a beauti- fully transformed Roman Amphitheater, May 11, 1964. White pillars adorned with golden clusters of grapes and laurel greenery made a fitting background for freshman and sophomore girls bearing Roman delicacies. They were clad in white Roman togas and wore golden head bands. A three-tier Roman fountain, spot- lighted in the center of the dining-dancing area lent authenticity to Linda Anstett's vocal selection Three Coins in a Fountain. Dancing followed the banquet with elected Queen Sandy Dalton and eaoort Max Gretencord, 1963 Queen Diana Leak and escort Dale Ander- son leading the Grand March. FROM QUEER ATTENDANTS Linda Clifton Marie Gerriok Prom Queens, past and present, lead B.H.S. students in the Grand March. BOSWELL REPRESENTATIVES IN GOVERNMENT Dave Dimmich and Dave Brost, Hoosier Boys' State delegate and alternate res- pectively, pause to comment on a bulle- tin board in Mr. Winkelpleck'a room that pertains to government and elections. Gaining knowledge in these areas is the primary purpose for Boys' State. Boswell was represented at Girls' State by Kay Finley. The convention was held on the Indiana University campus which afforded delegates a glimpse of college life along with politics. School winners of the Voice of Democracy speech contest sponsored by the V.F.V., are Vivian Buchanan, seoond; Dave Din- nich, first; Jill Fletcher, third) Dave was also a fifth place winner among the contestants from other schools in the corporation. 14 BAND BUSY WITH CONCERTS Gary Stone, Cindy Mlnniek, Joetta Dalton, George Doeden, Teri Krill, Diane Lawson, Connie Little, ROW Is Brenda Rhodes, Chria Morgan, Philip Goodvine, David Richardson, John Mitchell, Brenda Clifton, Kathy Washburn, ROW 2: Linda Clifton, Jane Nern, Janet Gerriok, Mark Diauoich, Barbara Brost, Mary Brest, Cheryl Clifton, Dennis Doeden, Vivian Buchanan, Kristen Kraner, Mary Ann Reynolds, |16 AND GAMF PERFORMANCES Boswell band activity began with partici- pation in the Band Day program at Purdue University. The sophomores are probationary members until they reach Junior status, and any upper classmen may be put on probation if their grades fall below the required grade-standard for membership. The membership for Honor Society is based on the four qualifica- tions: scholarship, leadership in school and community, service to his fellows, and character. New officers and a new advisor, Mr. Wayne Buck, started the Boswell FFA chapter on the go. The chapter motored to Brookston for the Farm Progress Show in September and to Chicago for the International Live- stock Show held in November. During the second semester the group studied judging with participation in county, district, and state judging contests as their goal The primary aim of the Future Farmers of America is the development of agricultural leadership, cooperation, and citizenship. The organization is designed to supplement training opportunities for boy3 who are progressing toward the goal of establishment in a farming business. Through FFA activi- ties, the cooperative spirit is fostered and individual talent is discovered and developed. Here is a school of experience in the art of working together for a common good. Future Farmers not only work wbII together, but they know how to provide organized recreation for themselves and others in the community. Here again this organization of, by, and for farm boys provides ample opportunity for games, sports, and other recreational activities appealing to the farm boy. As an integral part of the program of vocational education In agri- culture in the public schools, the FFA has become well known in recent years. The work on this newspaper is carried on in the advanced typing class and the knowledge these students are gain- ing is invaluable to them as future office workers. Some of these learning outcomes are those that are realized merely by participation in the project itself; other outcomes must be developed and helped along by the teacher or sponsor. Through this type of work students are encouraged to work together cooperatively, are given a brief introduction to journalism, secure practical typewriting and duplicating experience and usually develop an appreci- ation of the amount of work involved in what, at first, seems to be a simple enter- prize. In addition to learning outcomes, the staff members hope that School Daze ade- quately interprets their school to the community Row 1 Chris Tarter, Darlene Nevteon, Betty Hislope. Black, high, silk hats and white shirts or blouses comprised their ballgame regalia. Their well-executed cheers lent excitement to each game, raised school morale, and enabled the cheerleaders to perform more capably. Pep sessions were held throughout the season primarily for club members; new yells, songs, and routines were taught the members by cheerleaders during these sessions. The club adviser, Mrs. June Kramer, super- vised the group at pep sessions, during home games, and the cheerleaders during evening practices. Echoes is included in this number. Work on the Echoes was begun during the spring semester of 1964) the cover was selected, the theme was chosen by the existing staff, and materials needed in the production of the book were ordered. Photographs were taken by Baumer1s Studios early in November) many polaroid pictures were taken by staff members and Galen Krill kept us well supplied with activity pictures of ballgames, queen crownings, school dances, and the dedication picture. The staff is proud of this year's book. It represents many hours of hard work but the educational value of this type of work oannot be ignored. The Editor and those who worked with her endeavored to produce a book that would be prised by students and their parents by making the 1965 annual a real memory book that includes pictures of all students and teachers and by recording a complete history of the school year 1964-65 in pictures and print.
