REFLECTIONS How many times do you glance in a looking glass during the day? Very often would be the answer for most people. A mirror has come to be very essential to each of us. A mirror shows us our reflection which serves us in a number of different ways. But how many of us take the time to really look deep into our reflection? If a person tries it some time he might find that it reveals a great deal more than he expected. It could reveal to him his past, present, and future. Some people see a road of success and glamour in their reflection. Some see the business world ahead of them, while other people's reflections remain a blur to them. The 1961 Echoes staff has chosen reflections for our theme throughout this yearbook. We hope you will regard each page as a reflection of some event in the past year worth remembering to you. MR. JOHNSON SPEAKS Janus was an ancient Roman deity who had two faces and could look both ways at the same time. You may have wished that you, too, had the ability to see clearly both the future as well as the past as you face many of the problems of the days ahead. So many times we are advised to look ahead. Perhaps we should not spend too much time in regret for what we have done or have not done but should be determined to do better in the future. Suppose you had to build a house in which you would live the rest of your life. You would build it well; you would select the best materials you could obtain and apply the most highly skilled work- manship so that your home would not only meet your basic needs for many years to come but would warrant your pride. In a very real sense, you are at work building the house in which you'll spend all the years ahead of you. By carefully selecting the subjects which comprise your high school course, and other activi- ties in which you may engage, you are choosing some of the materials out of which the foundation structure of your future will be built. The thoroughness and care with which you apply yourself to your high school studies determine to a considerable extent the quality of work- manship you are putting into this impor- tant piece of work. It takes determination and stick-to- it-iveness to get the maximum benefit from your high school education. But, if you complete the Job and do good work, you will have equipped yourself with two of life's most important assets. You could not devote your time to a more important Job—a Job which, if done well, will bring you rich and rewarding returns in social, moral, and cultural values.
