✓ REFLECTIONS How many times do you glance in a looking glass during the day? Very often would be the answer for most people. A mirror has come to be very essential to each of us. A mirror shows us our reflection which serves us in a number of different ways. But how many of us take the time to really look deep into our reflection? If a person tries it some time he might find that it reveals a great deal more than he expected. It could reveal to him his past, present, and future. Some people see a road of success and glamour in their reflection. Some see the business world ahead of them, while other people's reflections remain a blur to them. The 1961 Echoes staff has chosen reflections for our theme throughout this yearbook. We hope you will regard each page as a reflection of some event in the past year worth remembering to you. MR. JOHNSON SPEAKS Janus was an ancient Roman deity who had two faces and could look both ways at the same time. You may have wished that you, too, had the ability to see clearly both the future as well as the past as you face many of the problems of the days ahead. So many times we are advised to look ahead. Perhaps we should not spend too much time in regret for what we have done or have not done but should be determined to do better in the future. Suppose you had to build a house in which you would live the rest of your life. You would build it well; you would select the best materials you could obtain and apply the most highly skilled work- manship so that your home would not only meet your basic needs for many years to come but would warrant your pride. In a very real sense, you are at work building the house in which you'll spend all the years ahead of you. By carefully selecting the subjects which comprise your high school course, and other activi- ties in which you may engage, you are choosing some of the materials out of which the foundation structure of your future will be built. The thoroughness and care with which you apply yourself to your high school studies determine to a considerable extent the quality of work- manship you are putting into this impor- tant piece of work. It takes determination and stick-to- it-iveness to get the maximum benefit from your high school education. But, if you complete the Job and do good work, you will have equipped yourself with two of life's most important assets. You could not devote your time to a more important Job—a Job which, if done well, will bring you rich and rewarding returns in social, moral, and cultural values. FOR THAT GLOW OF UNDERSTANDING, FRIENDSHIP TRUTH MRS LADSON- ECHOES OF 1961 With every coming year a new dedicatee must be chosen. The right choice must be someone with thst certain some- thing. The teacher you choose must be someone with whom you can talk with, as well as talk to, and who is a good listener a3 well as a good lecturer. Years from now when we glance through the pages of our chil- dren’s yearbooks, we will ap- preciate and understand how meaningful and important were those guiding hands of the teachers who listened and un- derstood, and helped us to be- come the good citizens that we are today. They will stay in our minds forever. In the stories we tell our children from our past they will play an important part. We, the staff of 1961, feel we have chosen such a person—to Mrs. Lilly Ladson—the yearbook of 1961 I The happy year, 1947, was the year Mrs. Ladson came to our school here in Boswell. Ever since, she has devoted her time to helping others. Both teachers and students have profited from her guidance and leadership. A smile being her trademark, she has bolstered many a down-in-the-mouth spirit on a rainy day. She has proven herself to be a truly dedica- ted teacher and a friend. For this we say Thank you, Mrs. Ladson. We will always remem- ber you. IS YOURS whets' CUTUS- OdlAS xJ dldzAlAMS dA+ S- jttfjLs UftLi S. ROBERT HANNA JIM RIDENOUR ESTHER TINSLEY Social Studies B. Looking forward to our graduation in June, we’re beginning to reminisce about all the wonderful times we have had these past two years. Our most memorable experience was our prom which we chose to be Welcome t o Paradise Isle.” Everyone in the class worked enthusiasti- cally selling candy and pop during aH the basketball games to help pay for it. We also held several dances. Sherry Griffiswas crowned queen. Early in our senior year we chose David Williams, Ronny Dailey, Beverly Lee, Maureen Stone, and Sherry Griffis as our class officers. Mary Ann Leuck and Bob Cannon represented our class on the Student Council. BeverlyJ.ee was our lovely candidate for Basketball Queen. She won the contest and was crowned 1960-1961 Basketball Queen after the Boswell-Fowler basketball game. After taking a vote, the class decided to go to enchanting New Orleans on our senior trip. In order to pay for it we have had numer- ous record hops, a slave auction, sold Christmas cards for which we would like to thank everyone v ho bought cards from us, sold school pins, presented our senior play, sponsored a movie, had entertainer, John Coleman, sponsor a dance, and many other money making projects. It is recommended that they be from the upper third of the class scholastically. Of the many responsibilities placed upon the council, this year's body has fulfilled them well. Thus far, it has been a great aid to the School Daze Staff by soliciting subscriptions, and helping with the distribution of the paper. Another of its concerns has been the planning of a gift basket and letters to be sent to Russell Sumpter while in the hospital. Just recently, it has proposed that we combine the Christmas parties of the junior and senior high schools into one oarty in the gymnasium. This seems to meet the approve.l of all the cla.sses. We are indeed grateful for the diligent work that the members of our council have put forth, and a special thanks is in order for Mr. Hanna who has contributed greatly to its success. On behalf of the members of the council as well as the student body, thanks, Mr. Hanna, for your time and effort spent.
