Text from Pages 1 - 56 of the 1958 volume:

300 BOSWELL ITES ALL WITH THE SAME GOAL TO WORK - TO STRIVE - TO SUCCEED This school year has been eventful and colorful at home and abroad. We waited anxiously for the arrival of Queen Elizabeth and her handsome husband, Prince Phillip. The conflict in Tunisa and South America alerted the entire world, and the Civil Rights issue was bubbling in Little Rock, Arkansas. The largest epidemic of influenza in many years spread around the world this fall given the name Asian flu. The first dose of vaccine was made possible only 82 days after the virus became available—a remarkable achievement. A satellite broke the gravity bearer and sailed into space. The excitement at school was terrific, but U.S. tried after the first failure and succeeded in sending Explorer I 600 miles higher than Russia's Sputnik. The Milwaukee braves won the World Series, rock h roll and the stroll stormed the music world and tne 1920 look appeared in fashions. Our teen-age world revolved about our home, church, and school. But like the rest of the country we were interested in hi-fi, T.V. spectaculars, best-sellers, flu shots, and the new sports car. We enjoyed class-room discussions and extra curriccular activities and followed the Hoosier craze for basketball. Yes, we three-hundred Boswellites had a lot 6f fun this year, but beneath the gay exterior of fads and trends, we realized that we all had one common goal for the betterment of ourselves and our changing world—to work, to strive, to succeed. Here to remind us of the class hours, and school activi- ties that made this year eventful for us, is the 1958, ECHOES. We, the annual staff members of 1958, hereby dedicate this edition of Echoes to the retired teachers, Margaret Silvers, Kathryn Rector, Clarence Smith, Mabel Hall, Nell Rigdon, and Mr. Edgar Burnett, a former principal and teacher of the Boswell High School for 38 years. Their unceasing patience and sincere helpfulness has contributed greatly to- ward the happiness and success of our grade and high school careers. Principal's Message One of the factors which has made the United States a great nation is its system of free public education. Our American democracy is practically the only great state in which there exists an educational ladder reaching from the kindergarten to the university, in which all parts, elementary secondary and higher are so organized that an individual may freely pass from one to the other. As far as education can accomplish it, our democracy aims to give every individual the opportunity to make the most of his native abilities. We, as students and as teachers are indeed fortunate in hav- ing the opportunity to participate in this great endeavor which has helped to make our nation outstanding. Faculty H. Through- out the basketball season it played at all home games It was received very well as it marched and presented a half-time show for the Boswe11-Fowler game. The band presented some very fine music in the annual Christmas Concert on December 16, 1957. Some from the band entered the Solo and Ensemble Contest at Fowler on February o p 195o• On March 13 the band participated in the County Band Festival at Gilboa. As the climax to a very profitable year, the band, with the high school chorus presented a Spring Concert on April 15. At the left is Kay Dahlquist, lead- Janet Kay Dalhquist in® drum majorette of the band. FIRST ROWr Linda Rhodes, Cindy Minnick, Pam Cox. Chorus THANKS TO OUR PAGE SPONSOR — GREEN'S 51 TO $1.00 STORE Girls' Physical Education An attractive group of lassies, the girls' Physical Ed. class, under the direction of Mrs. Esther Tingley, plays ball with the hearts of true athletes. Softball, kick ball and volley ball have been their main competitive sport for the year. Most class periods begin with a warm-up of exercises which seems to bring a few sore muscles to all the girls. Folk, modern, and square dancing have helped the girls in poise and gracefulness. Two years of physical education is a requirement for graduation—some girls enroll for a longer time because they are healthy and active girls who enjoy sports. Striving to make a good yearbook through good design and perfect typing, we found it quite difficult at times. We have worked hard but we have en- joyed it and now we are a bit reminiscent as we put the final edition on the shelf and start to think of next year's theme.
