These new outfits were hastily thrust in barrack bags, impatience and speed showing in every movement. After two hours all was over and another rifle team was equipped to represent the Ist Corps Area at the National Rifle lwatches, Vamp Perry. Ohio. August 26, 1098 finds us on the shore of Lake Erie. lVIore hustle, bustle, and registrations. The national matches had begun. To a newcomer's eyes it appeared like a circus. Cowboys, Texas rangers, policemen, Cubans, soldiers, sailors, marines, C.lN1.'l'.C.'s, R.0.T.C.'s, and a sprinkling of Chicago gunmen were making the quiet shores of Lake Erie echo and re-echo with revivals of friendship, advice, quarrels, and all other actions found in a crowd of over fifteen hundred people. In all this turmoil of preparation, three open-eyed. open-eared, and no doubt open-mouthed men from Boston University were doing their share of work. M. G. Salmond, P. D. Sherman, and A. BI. Anderson were waiting for buckets of mirage, coils of firing line, and action. Action was not slow in coming. The first week was spent in instruction of handling the rifle and pistol. This course of instruction was given every morning from eight to eleven-thirty o'clock. Then came the action: lst, noon meal, 2nd, bolt action: 3rd, quick actions for rapid fire positions, and 4th, bllllk action. After the first three days zeroing the riflei' was added to the actions. Evenings were spent in cleaning pieces, listening to dope,' from old timers, writing home, and becoming acquainted in the nearby town of Port Clinton. The last two days of the second week and all of the third were spent in shoulder to shoulder matches. They were fired by teams and individuals. Prize money was offered to both for high scores. The object of sending R. O. T. C. and C.M.T.C. teams to Camp Perry is not for prize money, but instruction in rifle and pistol marksmanship. To train these young men in the efficient use of both weapons, in order that they may become instructors in an emergency, is the main objective. This did not prevent many from winning prize money and medals for efficiency. There are three distinct matches in which each one of the B. U. representatives showed to good advantage. Paul Sherman was high man for the Ist Corps Area in the Wimbledon Cup Match, which consisted of twenty shots at 1000 yards: Malcolm Salmond was high in the Marine Cups Match, while Alvan Anderson carried off Clorps Area honors in the Navy Match. In addition to this Anderson won a medal for expert marksmanship at the 200-yard range in standing position. 320 ,,, L ,V y I New , V-,W V. mf- ,i ,I f V ...w4w4f',,m,,,, c.. 2 f 1: in 5-. ' xi.
