Fred Fish Ellis, Tufts college super-athlete. nosed out B. U. hy a 32-31 score in the annual game with Tufts, when he scored a free try in the last few seconds of play. St. Stephens Follege also took a game in the same manner. The find of the season was Five-Foot-Two Santo hlarino, who up to January was a hardened hench-warmer. Santo got his chance when lioh Berry Went out with an ankle injury. Starting his first game against the strong Dartmouth five, the diminutive Santo proved a sensation. In the next two games he was high point scorer, his 10 points against Vlark proving the B. U. margin of victory. lly Hcller's case was a replica of Klarino's. He was pressed into service at the New llampshire game and forthwith proceeded to shine. Flash hlarnci, another freslnnan, came out for the team near the close of the season and provided YVin Karlson with a capable relief forward. Pete Soutiere captained the cluh and had one of his hest seasons. No team that faced li. lf boasted a hetter defensive guard than the Terrier leader. Pete gave the big Green followers something to think about when he gave Swarthout, leading college scorer a lesson in haskethall. Swarthont scored hut one lmasket while playing against Pete. The Scarlet and 1Vhite quintet opened its season with the rangy 111. I. T. five. The height of the lflngineers was too much for the Terriers to off-set, and Tech won, 555 to 23. lioh Berry, freshman star accounted for 14- of the B. lf. points, and played a smart. floor game to hoot. The next contest was at Brown, and resulted in a surprise win for li. 11. Brown was over confident, and after piling up an early lead rushed in its second team. li. P. got going, and hy the time the Brown first team returned to the fray had the game on ice. The final score was li. ll. 33, Brown 31. Wfesleyan jumped on the Terrier in the next contest, winning 416 to QU. Yvorcester Tech was made to order a few days later in a game which was featured by the close guarding of hoth teams. U. U. won 26 to 21. Boh Berry. Vapt. Soutiere and Nims were the ll. P. stars. The next five games resulted in night- mares for 1Vin Karlson as in each contest his team went down to defeat. Harvard ran up the biggest score of the season against B. ll., tallying 62 points to Boston's 26. The game in itself was a farcical affair, replete with penalties and rank playing. Each team made 13 fouls, which shows how strict the officiating C'o.xcn K.fX1tl.SIlN WHS- QU2

It won only four of the 13 scheduled contests. However, the disastrous season was no fault of the coach. It seemed as though B. If and Misfortune were running a race. with Misfortune in the lead most of the time. She surely proved anything but a lady to B. lf. The story of the basketball team is one of injuries. scholastic difficulties and mid-year graduations. it the start of the year lfarlson saw that he was about to have a tough time. He did not have a tall candidate for the team and thus B. ll. went , through the season without a tall centre. Al Spitzer, although not a giant in stature. was given the berth. He apparently Q was succeeding when he discovered that he could take his degree in January and Q forthwith left the squad. Kenneth Young was given the job next but was felled by l A the mid-year examination jinks. Brainard Nims was converted from a star forward 5 to centre and carried on as best he could. However, centre was not the only berth which felt the clammy hand of Misfortune. Both forward positions and one guard 2 berth also felt the darnpness of her clutch. ln fact, the only player to start the season i as a regular and finish the year at his own berth was Vapt. Pete Soutiere. Bob Berry and Nims were picked by Karlson as the first-string forwards. Three games. and Berry went to the hospital with water on the knee. Nims was hastily converted to , centre following Spitzer's graduation and Young's Q ineligibility. Crawford was Soutiere's running mate at guard, until the examination period, and. he too, l look the route which many others have taken before T him. . This all was causing grey hairs to grow on Ii2lI'lSOIliS head where none grew before. lint it did not change the i color of the hair of the substitutes. They were in their glory. Santo Marino and Hyman Heller became the regu- lar forwards and Howard Keyo. replaced Vrawford at guard, in January. NliANAGER YOUNG if '37-'f efs. 5' Q01 , wx, Q' ' -hi!!
