'T CK CAPTAIN BICKNELL The 10Q8 outdoor track season was similar to those of previous years in that the team showed great strength on the track, hut fell down in the field events. B. U. engaged in dual meets with Northeastern, VVilliams, and Wlorcester Tech, dropping the decisions to the first two and defeating Worcester Tech hy the narrow margin of two points. In addition to these dual meets coach Freddie Burns took the relay team to the Pennsylvania Relay carnival at Philadelphia, where the Terriers finished second in the class C' mile relay. Captain Greg Hemmer proved an ideal leader and did more than his share in garnering points. He competed in hoth the 880 and one-mile runs and the javelin. B. U. showed its greatest strength in the sprints, in which events Coach Burns has developed one or more star performers every season for the past four years. fh- l l Ernie llorrill and Norm Bicknell proved themselves the class ot' the sprinters among the smaller colleges of New England. lforrill won every 100-yard dual ' race, while Bicknell lost his only dual Q20 at Wiilliams. A dual meet with Northeastern at Huntington Field, Brookline, opened the season April QI. N ortheastern's strength in the field events was sufficient to over- come the lead which B. U. had piled up in the running events. The Huskies suc- ceeded in capturing the meet by an 81-54 count, after conceding the Terriers first place in every running event lout the two-mile. Clean sweeps in the javelin and discus throws gave Northeastern a big lead which was increased by the cap- ture of every first place in the remaining field events. Ernie hforrill was the only double winner of the day. The Terrier flash took both the 100 and Q20-yard dashes hy wide margins. Norm Bicknell followed iNIorrill across thc line in thc century and won the 440 in the fast time of 51 3-5 seconds. Incidentally, this was Bic-knell's first race 1 over the quarter-mile distance and he did a fine piece of i work in finishing five yards ahead of Stanley Earle, l Husky star, who later placed third i11 the New England Intercollegiate quarter.
