A 26-acre athletic plant at Weston, one of the most modern in the east, was donated to Boston University by William E. Nickerson, a trustee of the University and a retired Boston business man. He saw the need of a home field for B. U. athletics. He conferred with President Daniel L. Marsh and between them they worked upon a system of athletics for all. believing that the development of the body was as essential to the students as the development of the mind. Mr. Nickerson started the ball rolling by giving a substantial check at a banquet given to the football men following the season of 1927. Two others with his signature affixed to them followed in rapid succession which covered the purchase price of the field. Work began early in the summer of 1928 and when September rolled around a baseball diamond, a football gridiron, a quarter mile cinder track, with a 220-yard straightaway and six tennis courts graced the formerly barren field. Early plans were to build a modern stadium at an expenditure of three quarters of a million dollars. But because of the layout of the gridiron this was found impossible. However, wooden stands were built to accommodate a crowd of 10,000 spectators. I The record of the football team is the best testimonial of the improved condi- tions. No longer were the candidates forced to practice on city dumps, back alleys and loaned baseball parks. In the four games played at Weston the team was unde- feated. Inspired by an editorial appearing the in Boston University News, Mr. Nicker- son offered to build the University a duplex clubhouse, on the field, in which B. U. squads would live and where visiting teams would eat and sleep immediately pre- ceding and following contests. President lNIarsh accepted Mr. N ickerson's offer and construction on the unique clubhouse was started at once. It will be completed this spring. The clubhouse gives Boston University a distinct place among institutions fostering intercollegiate athletics. It marks a new era in such competition. For President Marsh stated, Boys who have broken bread together one night are less ready to break heads the next day. Such spirit typifies the Universityls attitude toward intercollegiate athletics. Boston University seeks to develop friendliness rather than merely to win games. l l s 5 : n' . . V X' ag i- Q . 219 1 gf . . . Z l as as my Z- wc A 1 . YVY
