Graduation Day, 1960 S TUDENTS returned to the University last Sep- tember to participate in the usual registration process, enhanced this time by the new plastic ID card. Registration Week passed quickly, accom- panied by a hurricane and the first Terrier football loss of the season to Penn State. As freshmen and new students were shown the variety of student activities and organizations at the first SFA spon- sored Student Activities Night, the Alumni Associa- tion moved into its new home at 145 Bay State Road, and Staton R. Curtis moved into his new duties as Dean of Men. In October, the BU NEWS published an expose of illegal parking around Boston. The campaign, commended by the London Telegraph in addition to the Boston newspapers, was climaxed with a photo of a car belonging to the Commonwealth's Registrar of Motor Vehicles, shown triple-parked before the Sheraton-Plaza Hotel. The NEWS also conducted a University-wide poll of the national presidential election which saw Kennedy gain 52.7W of the students' votes. Election fever in- creased when Senators Javits and Saltonstall ap- peared on campus under the auspices of the Young Republicans Club. The last weekend in October saw the dedication of the 33,000,000 Medical Research Center, the SFAA production of Oedipus Rex and Oedipus at Colonus, and the Bell Lectures, given by Time chairman Roy E. Larsen. Other Homecoming Week events included the annual iloat parade, rally, and Homecoming Ball. Arm Morris, SFAA, was crowned Homecoming Queen. At the Military Ball at the Statler, Sue Lagree, SAR, gained the coveted rank of Coed Colonel, while the Universityis GE College Bowl team tri- umphed over Vassar College before succumbing to Ohio State on the popular television program. Fa- ther Norman I. O,Connor, Catholic chaplain on campus, was honored by over 500 friends and dig- nitaries at a testimonial dinner. Prompted by agitation from the BU NEWS, the Student-Faculty Assembly met to consider and de- feat a proposal to establish minimum dress stand- ards. Professor Paul Tillich of Harvard came to the University to speak on existentialism. At Inter- national Students' Day, foreign students presented various aspects of their individual national heritages, and after a widely-acclaimed performance of Doctor' Faustus at the BU Theatre, students left a snow- bound Boston for the Christmas holidays. Editorials concerning discriminatory practices in University-approved housing appeared in the Janu- ary editions of the NEWS, and students rallied to the defense of SPRC graduate A. H. Deferesu, im- prisoned by the Ethiopian government for his partici- pation in the revolt against Emperor Haille Selassie. Later, students and friends of Maribel Owen and Bradley Lord, members of the U.S. Skating Team killed in a plane crash in Belgium, gathered in Marsh Chapel to mourn their tragic deaths. In a series of dramatic sports events in New York City, John Thomas bowed to Russian high jumper Valery Brumel, while in Boston students applauded the folk singing of the Brothers Four, brought to Sargent Gym by the Arnold Air Society. The traditional Greek World Ball cliniaxed another successful Greek Week program, and Found- ers, Day commemorated the University's 92nd birth- day and President Caseis tenth year as its leader. Scarlet Key's Stunt Night again featured competition in skits presented by six schools before a capacity Hayden Hall audience. The remainder of the year passed swiftly, to be climaxed by Graduation Day exercises in June. Another year and another graduating class had left their mark on Boston University.
