T HE BOSTON epic began in 1630 when an English settlement was established on a hilly Massachusetts peninsula which the local Indians called Shawmut. Its growth before the Revolutionary War as a center of li- nance, trade, and culture was rapid. The city is characterized by the architectural style of its mansions, homes, and brownstones, due largely to the influence of Charles Buliinch-master architect of the State House, West End, and Beacon Hill. During the sec- ond half of the last century, Copp's Hill, Fort Hill, and sections of Beacon Hill were cut away to till in the cattail swamp called the Back Bay, because of increasing pressure for new urban land. Historic Copley Square buildings, including Trinity Church and the Boston Public Library, were built on this man-made land. Today the cowpaths and tea wharves of the early Shaw- mut colony are pages of romantic history, as plans for the Prudential Center, Government Center, expressways, and other urban redevelopment become realities of a Bos- ton in transition. The Military Ball One of the larger social events at the University, the Military Ball was held in the Imperial Ball- room of the Hotel Statler, with music provided by Bob Bachelder and his band.
