HE origin of Boston University resulted from the action taken at a convention of New Eng- land friends of improved theological training, held in Boston in 1839. The school thus founded was lo- cated in Newbury, Vermont, and later at Concord, New Hampshire, until it was transferred to Boston in 1867 where it was called the Boston Theological Seminary. On May 26, 1869, the Commonwealth of Massa- chusetts declared Isaac Rich, Lee Claflin, and Jacob Sleeper, and their associates and successors, 'ca body corporate forever,', under the name of the Trustees of Boston University. The young university grew rapidly, and by 1874, six additional units of instruc- tion had been adopted: law, music, oratory, liberal arts, medicine, and the graduate school of all sciences. World War I emphasized a need for more diversi- fied professional education, and the University ac- cordingly established the schools of business adminis- tration, education, and social service. Gradually the necessity for consolidation of the schools and colleges onto one campus was felt, and plans for a main cam- pus area were made. The economic depression of the thirties and the exigencies of World War II delayed the process which today finds a 35-acre central cam- pus on the Charles River, housing most of the Uni- versity's classroom facilities, libraries, laboratories, residence halls, and administrative offices. The University is currently composed of 15 grad- uate and undergraduate schools and colleges, in ad- dition to evening and summer course programs. An enormous educational complex, the University en- rolls annually over 30,000 full and part time stu- dents, thus the largest educational institution in New England and among the largest in the world. Yet however great its size, service through education is still today, as it was with its three founders, the key- stone of Boston University. xx l Homecoming Float Parade and Queen Contest
