But the place is so packed you can ' t even make out individual faces. This annoys you because you figure they ' ve spotted you by now and are watching your every move. And you don ' t even know where they ' re sitting. You stand for the Invocation. You ' re stand- ing on your robe and it rips a little along the seam and you thank goodness because it was too small for you anyway and you were con- vinced they gave you the wrong size in the first place. When you sit down you hear somebody in- troduce somebody else and he tries to talk to the audience in front of him and the notables behind him at the same time, and no one can hear him. But that ' s all right because you ' re not really listening too hard, because your tassle is down in front of your iace and

tickling your nose. And when you start to push it to the side you don ' t remember if it goes on I the right side or the left, so you say the heck. with it and finally let it hang down the back. You hear sniffling behind you and turn around to see a girl, listening to every word from the speaker, and she ' s crying and is completely affected by the whole thing. Then, Dr. Yeo says: Mr. President, I have the honor to present to you the candidates rec- ommended by the various faculties and the University Council. And Dr. Case says: Upon the recommendation of the appropriate faculty, and the University Council, and by the authority of the Trustees of Boston University, acting under the statutes of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, I confer upon you the degree indicated in your diploma, and admit you to all the honors, privileges, and responsibilities there- to appertaining. This really gets you and everybody ' s quiet and your palms are sweaty and you ' re a little scared ' cause you first realize you ' re no longer a kid in college but a great big alumnus with a lot of responsibility and maturity and you ' ve got to earn a living and no wonder you ' re scared. Then when the whole thing ' s over and you struggle through the crowd to get to your folks, you see this fellow going off with his Mom and Dad. You overhear him saying, If I started now, I ' m sure I would have made the Dean ' s List and I would have . . . As they disappeared among the crowd you figured that he had just about summed it up. Life at the LIniversity was one big course. But it was a great lesson. It was a four-year lesson and you suddenly realized you had learned enough to know you didn ' t know it all. But Mom ' s hug and Dad ' s pat on the back proved to you it was v ' orth it. . . . 25
