Position Arc Welding New Shape Cutting Machine Qyefdirzq Sfwp With the development ot modern armaments and the increased de- mand for heavy goods, the need for competent welders has never been greater. Begihning with the use of the forge, the properties of metols, the handling ot heat, and the knowledge of hand tools, we of the welding department advanced to the use of machines: grinders, butters, shears. In the latter par't ot this process, much ornamental and useful metal work is performed by the older boys. During our training we leorned gas welding on light gauge metals, including copper, aluminum, brass, and stainless steel. We then advanced to welding on heavier materials such as cast iron, to gas cutting both by hand and by mochine Aaall with proper observance of the rules of safety In addition we learned brazing, silver soldering, the use of ordinary gas welding, and the higher speed heliarc welding for aluminum and stainless steel. Our shop has been completely renovoted in the last year. A complete paint iob has brightened the whole area, We have a new ventilation and air conditioning system, two new wash bowls, twelve new arc welding booths, two new heliarc units and the booths tor them, a new cutting machine, grinder, grill, and stock room, With the excellent course ot in- struction and with all this new equipment, most ot us should become ond, we believe have become good workers in the welding field, Oxy-Acetfiene We'ding Uni' Cutting Steel Slate

Bench Work Slzeef meh! Slwp When we first enter the sheet metal department, we ore introduced to the tools and the machines we will use in our worlg. Some of the tools we become familiar with are- the riveting hammer, the rivet set, and the airplane snip. Of machines we learn the use of these: the burring, the thick edge, the crimping, and the sheet iron folder. ln sheet metal work we must acquire proficiency in measuring, cutting, braking, forming, riveting, double seaming, ond soldering. Layout work is an important part of our work. The parallel line, radial line, and triangulation are emphasized. All types of fittings are developed by these methods, and by'the time we become seniors we are able to Icy out by one or more of these methods fitting for air conditioning systems, ventilation plans, warm air units, and ship yard work, The theory behind our work is taught to us in related science and related mathematics. In these we learn the scientific and mathematical basis of our work, ond memorize the formulae necessary to it. Soldering

i iv.. Blue Print Reading REMEJ Work In all of the fourteen shops of the Boston Trade High School we have trade educated men to teach us boys the subject motter which is closely related to our trades, but which cannot be taken up in the shop itself. These instructors teach us the scientific and mathematical principles underlying our work in the shops, at all times, as far os is possible, matching their instruction with the shop projects being carried on at the time. Another thing these instructors do is to inform us about the latest de- velopments in shop practice and shop equipment, developments which are too recent to be available in the shops themselves. ln this way, we future mechanics are given not only the fundamental theories of common shop practices but an insight into what we may expect to meet in advanced indus- try.
