This situation is likely to continue for a long time. High speed passenger and freight transportation depends on this to, therefore, we need and will need a growing number of skilled airplane mechanics. Boston Trade High School offers a four year course designed to set boys well on their way in acquiring that skill. Among the subiects covered are the theory of aerodynamics, fabric work, sheet metal work, welding, wood- working, and other things connected with the trade. The boys study different kinds of airplane engines and learn to dismantle ond re-assemble aircraft engines, a necessary thing if they are going to know how to maintain air- craft power units in efficient operation. As a consequence of this training our boys are ready at gradution either to enter advanced technical schools to further their knowledge or to go directly into industry as apprentice air- plane mechanics. Here at Boston Trade High School we attempt to train such mechonics, either for general or specific automotive work. For that reason our shop is divided into three: the body, the mechanical, and the electrical shop. All boys must pass through all three, the younger boys dealing with simpler operations and as their skill indicates, progressing to more complicated jobs. Through this three way division our boys learn to handle any ordinary automotive iob which would come into a general repair shop, and they, if especially in- clined, and usually are, well trained to serve the public in common auto- mobile troubles, and their nation and themselves if the occasion should demand. So it is with us of the cabinet shop, but it is even more. It is our chosen life work with which we are well pleased. Our shop is divided into two parts: the bench room ond the mill, ln the former we learn the safe and efficient use of the hand tools, and the proper care of them. We also learn the design, making, and assembly of furniture, and the various ioints needed in that assembly. We acquire skill in ornamental carving too. In the mill we leorn the parts, operation, and skillful and safe use of power machinery. Thus we learn both custom and mass production of furniture, so that we may work successfully in a shop of our own or in some larger enterprise. Later we learn boarding, shingling, porch and roof construction, window and door framing, cornice work and some interior finish. We also learn the reading of blueprints and building plans. Our shop also maintains student crews for minor maintenance within the building. As a result of this training, when we graduate we should be skilled crafts- men capable ot handling ony of the usual carpentry work either with or without the aid of machinery. To do our work well, we have to know the proper use of such things as the T square, protractors, triangles, and French curves. In addition we must learn about gears, threads, and the assembly details demanded by the other trades. In other words, our trade is somewhat connected with all trades, and we must and do acquire some familiarity with them. For that reason, we also learn the making and reading of blueprints. Ours is the trade that binds all trades together. We of the drafting depart- ment know that our services will be in demand in many fields, and for this we are happy. The courses in the Electrical Department of our school give the fund- amentals and operations of the types of motors, light wiring, bell wiring, and different types of meters. In our early years we learn light wiring and bell wiring. ln our later years, under the supervision of our troined instructors, we learn the different types of motors and their construction. We learn how to use many kinds of meters and equipment in A.C. work and in elementary electronics, a branch of higher electricity, and gain pratical experience in electrical maintenance ond repair, As graduating students we have a strong respect and liking for our trade, and a firm confidence in our ability to pursue it competently. lt is no wonder then that the Electrical Department is one of the largest and most popular in the school, Juniors Testing Motor Generator Circuits 'Seniors Work on a Problem For The 3 Wire Circuit Lathe Unit in Operation Instruction in Difficult Face Plate Set Up .jfaclzizze Slzop The pressure is now upon us nationolly to maintain our lead in tech- nological fields. Interior maintenance is not neglected. At the same time, we are taught the principles of color mixing, color harmony, and the application of them, not only to furniture but to interior and exterior finishing. We also have a shop in which paper hanging is taught. These instructors teach us the scientific and mathematical principles underlying our work in the shops, at all times, as far os is possible, matching their instruction with the shop projects being carried on at the time. Another thing these instructors do is to inform us about the latest de- velopments in shop practice and shop equipment, developments which are too recent to be available in the shops themselves. ln this way, we future mechanics are given not only the fundamental theories of common shop practices but an insight into what we may expect to meet in advanced indus- try. Most important of these ore reliability, promptness, and the ability to get along with other workers in the shop. These and good moral character are considered even more valuable than complete mastery of the trade, and those boys who develop best in these are first thought of by the Placement Department, under the direction of Mr. Francis J. She interprets the results of physical examinations, and the results of vision and hearing tests to the pupil. Pupils ore also referred to the nurse by the teachers, and she tries through consultation to determine whether a physical condition is the cause of inattention or disin- terest. She tries to make the pupil understand the need for rest and relax- ation, healthful diet, knowledge of the basic food needs, vorious habits of personal hygiene, the importance of cleanliness, good posture, and the care of the teeth and eyes. It is felt that at this age a pupil can understand a health oppraisal, and an interest can be engendered to have him have his physical defects corrected and to induce him to make an effort to improve his general health habits. .f IMI TY X Consultation on Personal Health High, Wide, and Handsome All Together gylzysicaf and gfeaffb Cgducafion The obiect of our Health and Physical Education program is to inform the pupils, ond indirectly their parents, of the need of health education and physical training. The pupils learn about the many illnesses which occur in daily lite, the application of first aid in case of emergency in or away from home, and the structure of the human body and the many weaknesses to which it is subiect. Our health program emphasizes physical training, because the phys- ically fit are often protected against illness. That is why our nation so strong- ly supports physical and health education. ln addition to the general train- ing ot all students, special instruction is given to our athletes to help them maintain good condition in their activities. Physically fit boys are our most important product here. We hope you can see the importance ofthe program to your school and to its students. Keep Rolling Health Education .jlififary Science Very important to our students both physically and in the matter of discipline is their study of Military Science both by lecture and drill under the efficient leadership of LCDR Vincent C. The school regiment is divided into four battalions of several companies oflicered by-students so that other students may learn to take and give commands and, if suitable, become ofticers themselves. The student cadets maintain discipline in the corridors and take part in two military events: The Annual Prize Drill and The Annual Schoolboy Parade. For that reason, in every shop in the school the principles of general safety and the particular requirements for safety in that particular trade are constontly stressed . The same is true in class. We even have special assemblies on the subiect. ln the early part of the school year, vve had an excellent talk on fire by Lieutenant John Frongillo of the Boston Fire Department, a talk in which he not only pictured .he ho' rors resulting from the wrong use of fire, but also the great dependance we have on fire, if properly handled, for human com- fort. l-its talk was skillfully arranged and expertly given for boys in a trade high school. Later in the year we had another demonstration, this one on the use and misuse of flammable liquids by a representative ot the Ethyl Corporation, This demonstration was impressive and useful to the boys ot all trades, but particulory to those who deal with automotive engines or with paints. In addition to these approaches through the shops and through assemblies, we have a special group of students who have discussed the standards of safe trade practice over the radio. This group was under the general management ot Mr, O'Connor and Mr. Wolk. A further emphasis on safety is rrade through our regularly practiced fire drills in cooperation with the Boston Fire Department. Any boy passing through o tour year course of training at the Boston Trade High School must have a keen awareness of the need for sate shop practice and tire prevention, and the Hxed habit of being careful at all times.
