a i eel ee = os ie = = a= = = = been = eo a a el r ¥ wth ae THIS YEARBOOK IS GRATEFULLY DEDICATED TO FATHER KENNETH GERMAINE WHO FOR SIX YEARS, AS DIRECTOR OF DON BOSCO TECH, HAS WORKED TIRELESSLY TO MAKE OUR SCHOOL A RESPECTED CENTER OF EDUCATION AND LEARNING IN THE CITY OF BOSTON “A kindly Parson took the journey too. He was a scholar, learned, wise, and true And rich in holiness though poor in gold. A gentle priest. He seldom spoke; but what he said was clear, And full of sense, so that you wished to hear; Of high ideals and virtue was his speech; And gladly would he learn, and gladly teach. Geoffrey Chaucer The Canterbury Tales = a Se ge = DP x = ae me = wo we on pl Ss 4 = si MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR 2 oa % Dear Graduates: Education, as we all realize, is not a matter of being in certain buildings for a period of four years. Education is much more than books and tools and home assignments. It is a slow process of finding one's self with the help of others, of developing convictions based on what you have seen and heard from those with whom you came in contact. If you have acquired full knowledge of all your subject matter and are now preparing to begin once again the search for more knowledge in college, then thank God that he has given you these wonderful talents to learn, and learn well. For those of you who will go into industry and apply this knowledge you have acquired in your technology, give thanks to God for the mechanical and artistic talents he has given you. We have tried, in the spirit of St. John Bosco, to commmicate a system of values which we believe to be Christian and basic to every young man that comes to Don Bosco. How you use these principles in your own life is now up to you. You can rest assured that no matter what happens now, we will continue to remember you in our Masses and prayers. Your four years of high school are over but prayers for you and your families are not. That daily remembrance of our prayers may bring you great consolation today and throughout the rest of your life. We ask you to remember us and our Salesian works in your prayers. Sincerely, Father Ken Germaine Director ADMINISTRATION AND FACU A Re Ri See ae gh PW Sik: all es a rail ‘i me i aw, te a 10 FR. JON PARKS — PRINCIPAL OUR NEW PRINCIPAL Father Jon Parks comes to Don Bosco Tech with a small case of calendar years and a large trunk of school experience. Though a young man, Father Jon has lived in four regions of the country, taught in three, administered in two, and now has finally arrived at the one-and-only New England. A native of New Orleans, his first encounter with the Salesians was as a student at Archbishop Shaw High School. After graduating from Shaw, he went to Don Bosco College and became a Salesian in 1968. In 1972 he graduated from College with his degree in philosophy. He returned to his alma mater in the South, and for two years he taught history and math. Intent upon the priesthood, Father Jon moved to the Salesian theologate in Columbus. Ohio, completed his studies, and in 1974 was ordained a priest. After ordination he was assigned as Vice Principal at Salesian Preparatory School in Cedar Lake, Indiana. Soon after he was called to Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, New Jersey, where he served as Administrative Vice- Principal. In May 1980 the sojourn ended and Father Jon arrived as Principal of our own Don Bosco Tech. Fr. Jon brings to his students and faculty all the graces and benefits of his priesthood and religious life. He plans to improve and develop those academic programs that truly meet the needs of our students. He invites all to share with him his hobbies of cooking and science fiction reading. Finally, Fr. Jon is impressed by the spirit and loyalty of Don Bosco students and would like to see them both continue and grow. THE BEAR FACTS, Nov., 1980 Dear Graduates! Congratulations on a task well done! four years of high school have come and gone and you have experienced many changes — academic growth, spiritual renewal, social adjustments, physical and emo- tional maturity, to name a few. You have been assisted by many dedicated people and, although you may not have agreed with their policies or decisions, you have successfully completed their program of studies which bring you to your goal here at the Tech — graduation! Family members and friends have encouraged you and rejoice in this wonderful accomplishment. They have also supported you in your future plans, I’m sure, for college or technical education, or even jumping right into the job market. Don Bosco and Mary Help of Christians have always been presented to you as intercessors before the Lord. Continue to ask their help and assistance as you grow into full adulthood. Don Bosco Tech will always be your home. As alumni you will be invited back to participate in our programs, to give imput into the courses of study, and most of all to share your experiences with those who are still in high school. Be assured of our constant prayers for you. Never settle for second best when first can be achieved, Continue to set your goals high, asking for God’s guidance. May the Lord be with you always! E “THE BEAR FACTS’ WAS THERE ... The Bosco football squad opened its season in super suburban Norwood where schoolboy football is slightly less serious than war and slightly more dan- gerous. They survived that opener with their lives and with their reputation as a tough, respectable football team. Bob Ferrara demonstrated his skills with an eighty yard return and six points. Joe White made good of his one chance at the extra point bar, and Cap- tain Bill McNeil consistently rallied Bos- co's goal line defense when Norwood threatened. Final score: Norwood 16-7. Bosco then opened its Catholic Confer- ence campaign against archrival and much-vaunted B.C. High. Bosco gave away size, gave away experience, gave away speed, but refused to give away the game. The game opened with the tradition- al thrusts and parries as each team searched for the other's weaknesses. In the second period quarterback Paul Nee engineered a seventy yard scor- ing drive in which Mike Joyce had two catches and the final touchdown. Joe booted the kickoff into the heavens, making it impossible for B.C. to score in the first half. In the third period B.C. scored first, but Bob Ferrara responded with six points on the ground, and Mike Radley widened the Bosco lead with a two point reception. The desperate Eagles of B.C. would score again this period, but a tight Bosco defense preserved the Bosco advantage 15-14. The final period was frantic. Bosco got two points on a bizarre sofety. The talented B.C. tallied another touch- down that put them in the driver's seat. Paul Nee and Mike Joyce responded with another drive up the field, but their attempts to put it across the goal line were frustrated by a dubious call from the referee. When the time ran out, B.C. had its victory 20-17. Paul Gould 67 Dally Paul Cogavin, Kevin Madden, J Joe McCarthy John Munte, Coach Phil Coleman. CHEERLEADERS. Front. In what was supposed to be a no-show season for Don Bosco, the Bears came out of the gate in winning stride. Surprising the league, Don Bosco earned a respectable 8-3 record af mid season. Against C.M., against Sa- vio, and against Cathe- _ dral, the Bears trailed for three periods before up- holstering the guns for a comeback surge in the fi- nal moments. Highlights of the season at this point included an Ed Talbot steal that earned a victo- ty against powerhouse Christ the King of New York City. In the pressure moments, Senior Tom Healy from the foul line was surer than cold cold weather in January. And super quick Shawn Hood proved to all opponents that the hand can't stop what the eye can't even see. So good had the Bears been in the closing moments that the come- back was becoming not only trademark but even gameplan. Tim Moran 73 74 J.V. This year’s “‘plus factor’ for the freshmen basketball team was +72. There were nine teams that the freshmen played twice. So, there was an average improvement of 8 points a game against second-time opponents. There was then, a steady improvement in freshmen play during the season; but, like the host of the feast at Cana, the first-year men saved their very best until last. For they concluded a successful season by winning their eighth game of the year, a thrilling 72-69 overtime triumph over this year’s sophomores who played on last year's freshmen team. ON THIN ICE by Paul Gould This year’s varsity hockey squad is a team with two faces: the face if wears against non-league competition (5 wins and no losses) and the face it wears against league opposition (3 wins and 6 losses). While all may be lost within the Catholic Conference, the Bears may still lose one game before they lose their berth in State competition. It is thin ice, but it is ice. On the plus side, the team has been decisively beaten only twice, both times by powerhouse Matignon. Catho- lic Memorial, Archbishop Williams, and St John’s were all a mere goal better than Don Bosco. The team is led by Seniors Dave Kel- ley, Bill Acerra, Joe Higgins, Jim Concan- non, John Shumski, Bill Santry, Bill Da- matin, and Ken Layton. Bill and Ken share equal time in the net while Dave Kelley is one of the premier centers in the state. The team’s other established leaders include Juniors Neil Shea, the squad's leading scorer; Mike Curran, a hard-nose right winger: and Mark Dono- van, a tough defense-man who is also a genuine scoring threat. Jack Martin, something of a surprise, is the squad's second highest scorer and a great asset to the team. FULL THROTTLE Last year it was a team of new faces, even a new coach, Mr. Tom Peck. This year’s squad, despite the loss of backstroke and springboard star Steve Daly, has put it all together. After coming off a strong but losing season last year and losing its first five meets this campaign, the swim team rang in 1981 by defeating its next five opponents. The credit for this comeback is shared equally by Coach Peck, co- captains Ed Senier and John Keener, and the entire squad's total effort. Even Fr. Pat has gotten into the act as a bi- ased scorekeeper. As with last year, which produced swimmers like Paul Hines, Mark Mad- den, school record holder in the Individ- ual Medley, and John O'Donnell, school record holder in the Butterfly, the big story this year, is the quality of the fresh- men. Newcommers Dennis Coffee, Pat- rick Mangan, and John Hutchinson, brother of graduate Joe Hutchinson, have made their mark on a team that has suddenly come fo life. Brian Farrell, much sharpened in his skills off the board, and Joe Barrett handle the div- ing competition handily, while people like Paul McCormack and Steve Sheehy deserve credit for putting out a tremen- dous effort. At 8:30 each morning, the bus departed from Boston, and the class began a packed but enjoyable schedule. Approximately 45 minutes later, the class arrived at the re- treat house and were warmly greeted by Fr. Joe Maffei and Bro. Bernie Dube, the directors of the retreat. After a fitting meal of donuts and milk, the day's theme was introduced: for Seniors, Christian Decisions; for Juniors, Crossroads; for Sophomores, Community: and for Freshmen, Entering Don Bosco. A fifteen minute followed. By 11:00 the students were ready for what they themselves in the follow-up question- naire judged the most fruitful activity of the day — the individual Confessions. After a quick lunch most of the classes rushed out into the brilliant foliage and ample fields of the North Shore area. Day after day, the unsuspecting homeroom teacher fell victim to a football game. Finally, the day con- cluded with a practical talk and the cele- bration of the Mass. THE STUDENT COUNCIL DANCE by Paul Jones The Student Council of Don Bosco Tech hosted and organized its first dance on the evening of Friday, October 24. When the dance started, the dance floor was as vacant as the Sahara at high noon, but by 9:00 it was like the outside of Fenway Park when the Sox are in the World Series. the unpredictable disc jockey, Dru Erico, turned the night around. If my guess is correct, the young people who came to the dance weren't coming for disco music. It didn't take Dru much time to draw that conclusion: what started as an ordinary disco dance turned into an exciting night of modern rock. In the middle of the dance, Dru took a break to award the many prizes for hard work on the candy drive. In terms of money, the Student Coun- cil gained approximately $1,400 for its treasury. That money will be used in the various Student Council projects.
