And The Freedom Trail, highlighting places of local and national significance, reflects the cultural, historical, and religious traditions which have earned Boston the glorious title ‘“‘Athens of America.” A tour of the Freedom Trail conjures up proud thoughts of those patriots and martyrs, scholars and businessmen, and clergymen and statesmen who have contributed so selflessly and magnificently to our city, our state and our country. Because it is necessary to understand our heritage for an appreciation of our legacy, our state and our city have provided for the education of their young. In so doing, the young people are steeped in cultural and scientific studies and these ideals and principles upon which our democracy is based. In these regards, Boston Technical High School has admirably fulfilled its function. But the role of the school has been greatly enlarged due to the demands and complexity of our society. No longer is it adequate to prepare the young men and women of our country for the “present”, or for the small community. In our ever changing and shrinking world, the graduate of today must be prepared for a new and different tomorrow. In this respect also, Boston Technical has not failed. Therefore, as we salute the Freedom Trail, as we reflect on what it means and what it symbolizes, we rejoice at the stable foundation we’ve been provided for our stepping stone into the future. At the same time we thank you, Boston Technical High School, for being the bridge between the past and thee future— the future we’re going to forge. SAMUEL AVIN Boston University B.S., A.M. Boston Technical High School 1927- The Class of 1966 is delighted to dedicate this Techni- cian to Mr. Avin who, during his many years of continu- ous service at Tech, has had the pleasure of sending many graduates into the world better off because of their con- tact with him. There are few people in any walk of life that make such a profound contribution to society as does Mr. Avin in his quiet, unassuming manner. Along with his earned degrees, Mr. Avin has done ex- tensive advanced study at Harvard, M.I.T., and the Univer- sity of Massachusetts. His formal education has been en- riched through travels throughout Russia, Europe, the British Isles and the United States and Canada. During the World War II, Mr. Avin worked at the Charlestown Navy Yard, and was the Red Cross Disaster Chairman for Roxbury. May many more classes have the pleasure of knowing you, Mr. Avin. MR. EDWARD GOLDEN Harvard A.B. Boston College A.M. Boston Teachers College Ed.M. Roxbury Memorial for Boys 1929-1942 Boston Technical High School 1942- It is with great pleasure that the Class of ’66 dedicates this Technician to Mr. Edward Golden who has devoted himself to the teaching of Boston’s high school boys for the past 37 years. Mr. Golden has proved an inspiration to students and faculty alike as his graduation from Har- vard College was truly a “‘commencement”’, a beginning of further intellectual growth. But he is not an “ivory tower scholar” as his practical wisdom and fine rapport with Tech boys readily attests. Mr. Golden has happily combined the coaching of golf and tennis with his academic activities, and for 20 years has been an official timer at Boston schoolboy track meets. Not content with staying on the sidelines, he is a fine golfer and still plays the game regularly. Among his other athletic interests are college hockey and football which he follows closely. Convinced of the value of education as the best founda- tion for a successful life, Mr. Golden has applied this belief to his personal and professional life. We, the Class of ’66, are among the benefactors of your educational commitment and devotion to this ideal. Thanks for every- a Mr. Golden, and may you enjoy many more years at ech. MR. LOUIS A. VAN HAM Mechanics Arts High School Boston University B.Ed. Boston Teachers College M.Ed. Worchester Boys Trade School 1921-1924 Boston Technical High School 1925-1966 Past Pres.—Mass. Industrial Educational Society Past V.P.—N.E. Industrial Arts Association Past V.P.—Mass. Industrial Drawing Teachers ‘Association Following his graduation from Mechanics Arts High School in 1913, Mr. Van Ham spent eight fruitful years in industry acquiring a thorough knowledge of his trade before joining the faculty of Worcester Boys Trade School. After three years there, he returned to his alma mater and has been preparing young Bostonians for in- dustry and the professions for the past 41 years. That Mr. Van Ham learned his trade and profession well is unquestioned; that he wasn’t satisfied with less than excellence is evident from the manner in which his colleagues elected him to high offices in professional societies. Few faculties can boast of men of such caliber, inthe Van Ham’s retirement will leave a great void to e filled. May we wish you, Mr. Van Ham, a long and happy re- tirement and the realization of many dreams and ambi- tions which your busy schedule never quite allowed time for. May we also thank you for putting these things off long enough for us, the class of ’66, to participate in your wisdom and friendship. IN MEMORIAM MR. HERBERT BROKVIST 1908-1965 Boston Technical High School 1948-1965 The entire school was deeply saddened last fall by the untimely passing of Mr. Herbert Brokvist, a teacher in the drafting and machine departments for many years. After sixteen years in the Francis Parkman District, Mr. Brokvist came to Boston Technical High School in 1948 and remained with us through 1965. Here he serv- ed with unusual distinction as a friend to the faculty and as a guide to his boys. During his career, Mr. Brokvist found the time to be a scoutmaster, special patrolman, ration supervisor, and a member of the Board of Trustees for the Congregational Church. We at Technical High School mourn the loss of Mr. Brok- vist and extend to his wife Mabel and three daughters our profoundest and heartfelt sympathy. ADMINISTRATION Head Master’s Message Has the day of the self-made man passed? Has our civilization become so complex, so technological, and business oriented that only highly-trained per- sonnel, graduates of colleges and technical institutes, can hope to find good paying jobs? The answer is yes — that is, for all except the unusual fellows, fellows who refuse to quit, the fel- lows with burning ambition, with grit, and with stamina. The fellows who, in the race for life’s prizes, hear the pistol bark out the warning signal of one more lap to run, and who then show the stuff they are made of by bursting out of the pack to a blazing, victorious finish. Our nation still yearns for more of this type, for more Lincolns, Washingtons, Kennedys. Others have done it. Why not I? EVERETT CONWAY Headmaster A.B., M.A. MARGRET SULLIVAN R.N. The season, however, was not disastrous as there were many sparkling performances by such standouts as Kevin Kelly, Kurt Farmer, Steve Monis, and Ed McDonough who were named to the All-City Team. Coach Moran will surely miss them along with seniors Marc Swartz, Bill Hogan, Gerry Fisher, Ed Molloy, Bob Gillis, Glen Wolff, Bill Doherty, and Brian Dowling who provided Tech rooters with many exciting moments. BASKETBALL Operating with a well-balanced, sharpshooting team with great depth, Coach Ed Grant’s charges complied a 17-3 record as they copped the City League champion- ship for the second straight year and easily qualified for the Tech Tourney. Despite the loss of Marshal Lewis for much of the season, The Tigers, spearheaded by the scoring of sophomore Bobby Raynor and the rebounding of Mike Curley and Billy Wise, rose to the occasion when the chips were down. Along with these standouts, the Starting Five: Smalley, Lewis, Curley, Wise, Raynor. 54 steady play of Dwain Smally, Ted Shearrion, Joe Wise, Don Leonard and Bob McNamara provided Tech with the sustained effort required for such a tough schedule. Although Tech’s basketball future is still bright, Coach Grant will lose the services of his captain, Mars- hal Lewis, an inspiring leader who provided the team with a great lift on his late season return to action. Also leaving due to graduation will be Dwain Smalley, Ted Shearrion, Eric Sanchez, Bob McNamara, Don Leonard, and the Yee twins, Gary and Glenn. Coach Vic Campbell’s hockey squad compiled an 11- 2-1 record in tough City League competition. Combining speed, ruggedness, and experience, the Tigers register- ed seven shutouts with P. J. Flaherty in the goal as they qualified for the Tech hockey tournament. Along with the loss of co-captains Bill Hogan and Jed Duggan and seniors Paul Naper, Gerry Burke, Jim Connors, and John Maylor, Tech for the first time in many years will be without the services of Coach Camp- bell, who retires from coaching this year. The record of Mr. Campbell is the envy of every city coach, and represents a great contribution to hockey in the City of Boston. TRACK The laurels achieved by Coach Don Burgess’ indoor track squad was a major factor in a glow- ing winter sports season at Technical. The boys won the Reggies, the B.A.A. Meet, and prevailed as City champions in league competition. These honors were accompanied by a strong second in the State Meet and a great winning ef- fort by Carl Thompson in The Nationals in New York. Among the seniors who made such a great con- tribution to these successes were Tri-captains Bobby Brooks, Kevin Farner, and Alex Zedros along with Seniors Glenn Wolff, Mike Roach, Steve Kiley, and John Cobb. These boys will be sorely missed, but the return of such stalwarts as Carl Thompson, Paul Donovan, Kevin Joyce, Fred Dow, Charles Weeks provide promise for the future. 62 Brooks, Farmer, Mr. Burgess, Zedros. The cross country team, under the direc- tion of Coach Ed Grant, continued to domin- ate the City League. In annexing their sixth straight championship, Coach Grant’s har- riers were again undefeated in league competi- tion. With a well-balanced squad headed by Captain Alex Zedros and Captain-elect Paul Donovan, the Tigers were not seriously chal- lenged until the State Meet when they had to be content with second place. The team will miss the fine efforts of Alex Zedros, Bobby Brooks, John Cobb, and Bill Schillit, but the future remains as bright as the past for these young men who brave many a stark fall day to bring Technical High Schoo! these honors.
