CONWAY Headmaster WILLIAM J. HARRISON Assistant Headmaster Mr. Joseph Moran Dedication Mr. Joseph Moran received his A.B. degree from Boston College with the class of 1920. Then, after studying at St. John’s Seminary in Brighton for one year, and working as a substitute teacher in the Boston Public Schools for another, he returned to Boston College to obtain a Masters degree in Education which he received in 1923. In September of 1923 Mr. Moran began his distinguished teaching career at the Emerson Junior High School in his native East Boston. He was ap- pointed to the English Department of Mechanic Arts High School in 1924. Since that time he has rendered outstanding service to the school as well as making a significant contribution to the teaching of English. Moreover, he was the founder and first director of the Mechanic Arts yearbook. He also served as literary adviser of the Artisan for twelve years. Over the years Mr. Moran has taken graduate courses at Boston College, Boston University, and Boston Teachers’ College. He is a member of the Boston College Alumni Association, the Catholic Alumni Sodality, and the National Council of Teachers of English. To you Mr. Moran we wish you continued good health and fortune. We sincerely hope that you will be with us for many more years in the capacity of outstanding English teacher, good friend, and close adviser. My Sincere Good Wishes .. . TOPTTE, CLASSSOF 1965.0 I am delighted that the editors of the yearbook have seen fit to dedicate the 1965 Technician to me. I do not know why I have been singled out for this dis- tinction, unless it is that the passing years have made me the longest serving member of the faculty of this school; but whatever the reason, I am greatly pleased that I have been honored in this way. From my pleasant association with many of you in the classroom and out, I am inclined to believe that this year’s graduating class is, on the whole, as fine a body of young men as can be found in any high school, and I am confi- dent that most, if not all of you, will put to good use the valuable education that you have received here and thus bring credit to yourselves and honor to your alma mater. To all of you I extend my sincere good wishes for your success and happiness in the years to come. Joseph Moran Mr. Everett J. Conway Mr. William J. Harrison Be Generous and Merciful . . . How can I get the deepest, fullest and richest measure of happiness out of my life is a question that sometime or other every thinking person poses to himself. Money, fame, glory, power, judged by the lessons ofhistory, w ould seem to be the most intensely desired prizes of vast num- bers of yearning mortals. Does the achieving of one, or all, of the dazzling prizes of life enable one to capture the elusive phantom — happiness? Is any degree of steady and long lasting contentment possible in a world where wars and rumors of wars hang over the heads of all like the fabled sword of Damocles ? What answers to the above challenging queries do prophets, saints, philosophers, scientists and men of wis- dom give us? A reasonable amount of steady happiness appears to be possible of attainment (at least most of the time) if you strive strongly for justice for all, (that means you fight constantly on the side of God) be generous and merciful, learn how to keep your body and mind healthy and strong by doing what medical scientists and religious teachers advise us to do, and then (this last is so hard but not impossible to implement) find some life work that brings joy and satisfies your deepest aspirations. Cuaeett BY Conway Headmaster L. to R., Lester Williams, Peter Lee, Richard DaForno, Laurence Clancy. For the past few years we have toiled to cross many bridges and actually have been a part of Boston Technical High. Technical now will always be a part of us. The climax of our short four year endeavor is upon us. As we pass through these hallowed corridors for the last time as students, we shall each go our separate ways. Whether it beinstitutes of higher learning or various vocations, we are indebted to Technical High for our unique preparation for such a highly complex world. Counselled and examined by the dedicated and able faculty we have gained much knowledge and developed character. We of the Technician staff, under the assistance and competent direction of Mr. Patrick J. Foley, hope that this yearbook will reflect many happy memories in future years. The combined talents of its staff, both literary and artistic, have won it several awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, of which it is a member of long standing. Being a general magazine, the Artisan contains not only the fiction, poetry, and editorials of Tech’s budding young writers, but also the accounts of our illustrious athletic squads, outstanding clubs, and just plain news from the stu- dent body itself. Under the direction of Mr. James Burns, the literary advisor, and Mr. Ralph Rosenthal, the art ad- “Come on, everyone, sing” visor, this fine publication has earned itself a prominent place among high school publications across the nation. The Artisan regularly exchanges issues with over three dozen of the nation’s finest high schools and prep schools. This year the staff was one of the largest and best qualified in the history of the magazine. In the years to come, the Artisan will grow in importance as the sounding board for the intel- ligent opinions of the students of Boston Technical, and as Tech’s calling card at prominent schools throughout America. First Row: Harrington, Cannata, Accomando, Kahalas, Sandofsky, Weinstein, Martin, Wong. Second Row: Mr. Rosenthal, Carroll, Murphy, McGowan, Gutterman, Currier, Daforno, Helms, Comeau, Kooyoomjian, Rich, Albanese, Mr. Burns. ART ACTIVITY One of the most active clubs, under the expert guidance of Mr. Ralph Rosenthal, is the ART CLUB. For in this club the many creative posters used in the school, the droll cartoons for the Artisan, and all the realistic settings in our assemblies are produced. Comprising of those who have a bent with paint and brush, the ART CLUB often encourages some of these boys to continue this gifted work in art schools after graduation. Further works of the ART CLUB can be noticed throughout this yearbook where the members have greatly contributed to its perfection. “Me, cheat ?”’ First Row: Spiegal, Abany, Kleinglass, Kizner, Kahalas, Accomando, Harty, Nelson. Mr. Kahn, musical director, has trained his young musicians to perform like profession- als. At Assemblies the blare of trumpets, the roll of drums, together with brass and woodwinds are combined in a mu- sical picture to the delight of both students and faculty. In addition, there are several virtuosi who provide the spark and vitality of this highly entertaining group. It is, un- doubtedly, one of the finest of school bands to be assembled in the Greater Boston Area. First Row: Cassidy, Porteleki, Grozenger, Cohen, Sirkin. Second Row: Mr. Mulloy, Berkovitz, Gibbons, Murphy, Olmstead, Ferrelli, Goldberg, Lee. “Have you ever thought of becoming a deep-sea diver?” CAMERA CLUB Being one of the most interesting and fruitful groups in the school, the CAMERA CLUB is also one of the most important. For not only do the members of this club learn of all the problems of the camera world but they also solve them by the taking and processing of pictures throughout the school year. Under the direction of Mr. Mulloy and Mr. Burns the eager shutter bugs aid in the taking of pic- tures for the Artisan and Yearbook through which they proved that “one picture is worth a thousand words.” At the end of each year a vastnumber of commendable pictures are added to the evergrowing file of the CAMERA CLUB. CHESS CLUB The CHESS CLUB, under the direction of Mr. Diggins, carries the honor and prestige of the school into the field of the “Game of Kings.” Having many proficient members, the club has become one of the best in the city. They have defeated a number of other high school chess clubs, a factor attesting to their growing skill. It isone of the most respect- ed activities in the school and requires much concentration in addition to a keen mind. Next year the team hopes to realize the potential of several juniors and sophomores and, as a result, continue to maintain its high standing in school- boy competition in the Greater Boston Area. “One or two shots of Irish Mist ?”’ First Row: Desimone, Garfinkel, Ragnelli, McCarthy, Antonino, Magnifico, Colbert, Hall. Third Row: Doucas, Cronin, Narus, Yaffa, Wong, Zwicker, Epstein, Minaro, Costello, Walsh. CORRIDOR PATROL Security of Personal property, and silence in the corridors are basic to the efficiency of a large educational complex. The Corridor Patrol fulfills the need for a force of dedicated young men to handle the management of our vast corridors. Under the leadership of Mr. Cronin, these students guard the various floors of our school against the intrusion of un- authorized travelers and are instrumental in the passage of students from one lunch to another. In such a large physi- cal plant as ours, some sort of trafficmanagers and security guards are essential, and our fine Corridor Patrol fills the bill admirably. ‘““We got the chem test; now how about the math ?”’ First Row: Cameron, Johnson, Kakalas, Sandofsky, Fisher, DeDominici, Barron, Burns. Second Row: Guterman, Lebrun, Currie, Ennis, Anthony, Alder, Berkowitz, Kelly, Swartz. First Row: Carlson, Westcott, Rockwood, Seluk, Mummulo. Second Row: Mr. Thibeault, Hansen, Skaparas, McCarthy, Sulaitis, Duczakowski, Rawlings, Ulchak. DRAFTING STANDARDS Approximately fifteen years ago the DRAFTING STANDARDS CLUB was organized in order to familiarize students with drafting techniques that exceed the scope of the high school course of study. Also, the club gathers together the numerous skills of drafting which become valuableto the drafting courses. Under the dynamic leadership of Mr. Carpenito many of our alumni go on to become draftsmen, technicians, and engineers. Students learn the complex na- ture of form, proportion, and structural relationships while seriously exploring new ways in which drafting may be re- lated to the business world. Obviously this activity is one of the most outstanding in the school. “Who said Israel was up here ?”’ First Row: Colbert, Drobnis, Mickevich, Sheehan (Capt.), McGarry, Seitsinger, Barker. Second Row: Mr. O’Bryant, Kavaljan, Kondratiuk, Mitchell, Rogers, Blackiemore, Comper- chio. Third Row: Barry, Chin, Kleinglass, Neviackas, Liebl, Orphanos. “Do you want some lead in your head ?” DRILL TEAM Directed by Mr. John O’Bryant, a one-time U.S. Army drill instructor, the main purpose of the DRILL TEAM is to prepare its members in a militaristic type of discipline for service to the school. A great deal of credit is deserved by the members who sacrifice before and after school time so that they may serve as future Honor Guards at our assem- blies. Another job which the members ofthe DRILL TEAM do and do well is acting as ushers at the Home and School Association meetings. DRIVER EDUCATION With an ever-increasing number of automobiles, trucks, and busses on our highways, it is obvious that the DRIVER EDUCATION Class is of the utmost importance to young people. Under the highly skilled direction of Mr. Gable, numerous members of the student body learn about the technical nature of the automobile. Moreover, the essen- tials of good driving such as courtesy, and the importance of proper attitudes are stressed. This background informa- tion, though highly theoretical, proves invaluable for stu- “HO, HO, HO. weeyou flunktls dents who are desirous of obtaining a driver’s license. Above all else, each member learns that safety pays, and that a trained driver is a good driver. First Row: Papapietro, Sheridan, Ketchen, Smith, Son, Lee, Chin, Fredricksen. Second Row: Mr. Gable, Baker, Borek, Alman, Jacobs, Kelly, Lebrun, Currie, Walsh, Bell. Third Row: Vivolo, Lundel, Mastarelli, Colton, Walden, Walsh, Alston. HARVEST DANCE The annual Boston Technical High School Harvest Dance was held on Wednesday evening, November 25, 1964. The gala event took place at New England Mutual Hall. Well over a hundred couples danced the night away to the music of the Jimmy McHale orchestra. Members of the football team were honored on the completion of another victorious season. Many thanks are due to Mr. Holland and the members of his hard-working committee. ‘“‘The Man from Uncle is a good choice”’ First Row: Mr. Rosenthal, Cappadonna, Swartz, Davis, Accomando, Johnson, Mr. Holland. LUNCHROOM MONITORS “Gravy Train!” The extensive problem of running an orderly and efficient lunchroom is taken in hand by the skilled know-how of Mr. Packard and his proficient staff. Voluntarily these boys give up their free time in order toconductthe noon flow of lunch- room traffic in a better fashion. Other students run the cash registers, assist in the serving of mouth-watering food, and help in the cafeteria when needed. Though still relatively new the Lunch Patrol has become indispensable and appre- ciation is expressed by all who can enjoy a pleasant lunch due to the proficiency of these boys. Table praise is also extended to Mr. Grant and Mr. Gable for their work in directing the general demeanor in the entire cafeteria. Such a group is our excellent Math Club. It is under the direction of Mr. Roger Connor. It is a cross- grain of the largest and best class in this school’s distin- guished history. The club’s members are unequalled in the quality of their scholarship or their dedication to purpose. Many of the members are qualified for advanced placement in the college of their choice and all are well versed in the symbolism and complexities of basic college math. The students of future years will put an ever-mounting accent on the activities and achievements of the members of this or- ganization, and it should become one of the largest in the school. And it is a truly gay, enjoyable festivity for each senior and his vivacious date. Formally attired in white evening jackets, the boys are sec- ond in appeal only to their lovely dates. But without the energetic work of the SENIOR PROM COMMITTEE the evening of all evenings would be less than a success. For these students must hire an orchestra, print a dance sched- ule, sell tickets, and many other tasks of a similar nature. Mr. Holland provides highly competent assistance to the PROM COMMITTEE. The 1965 Prom was unquestion- ably a marvelous affair and will be long remembered by all who participated. RADIO CLUB The RADIO CLUB was established in 1961 and is now directed by Mr. John Diggins. Since its inception the club has been most popular and it now consists of about 42 members. The primary objective of the club is to stimulate student interest in electronics, and to provide an opportunity to obtain the prized radio amateur license. Within the first few months of operation several students took the required examinations and earned their station licenses. Now the club operates on both 6 and 2 meters (amateur bands) under the station call of K I P F portable one, Boston, Mass.; both radiophone and radio telegraph are used. Equipment is gradually being acquired, and with the ap- proval of the recently formulated by-laws, it is expected that the F.C.C. will grant Technical High a permanent license. “Anyone like to bowl?” First Row: Johnson, Beinloss, Mehlor, McGowan, McCarthy, Smith, Raynor, Connolly. Under the expert guidance of Mr. Lampkin the boys are familiarized with all the branches of science. If they desire to further their knowledge in specific fields, they can do so either through club experiments or through the reading of the wide selection of books contained in the club’s library. There is a great deal of work in- “The termite factory” volved in the SCIENCE CLUB, for throughout the year the members work on individual projects which are entered in the Science Fair. The better projects then go to the Latin School City Fair and the winners then go on to the M.I.T. State Fair. Each year Tech boys have taken many of the most coveted awards, and this year was no exception. Tech students again were in the forefront of award winners! With Mr. Andrews as their head it is the responsibility of these boys to sell the Yearbook to their classmates. They dedicate themselves to this demanding job, and as a result they insure the financial success of the Year- book. Much credit is given to this group and Mr. Andrews for the successful job which they did in selling the Yearbook and collecting the payments for it. “Ichabod Crane...with glasses even” ‘i REN OOO Ohl tay orderings: First Row: Goldman, Cameron, Bell, McGowan, Dunlap, Kooyoomjian, Berkovitz, Raynor. Members of this ac- tivity are responsible for the orderly filing of students be- tween classes and they perform their demanding duty excep- tionally well. They are directed by our outstanding coach, Mr. Thomas Moran, who has reduced the complexities of security to a minimum. Students belonging to this activity voluntarily give up their study periods and are positioned at key places throughout the vast corridors of the building. They maintain law and order at all times. Members are chosen on the basis of academic ability and high character. In more recent times they have taken on the chore of aiding office personnel who are in charge of the public address system. SHOP ASSISTANTS Performing valuable service in the numerous shops of the school are the SHOP ASSISTANTS. These boys are the most mechanically able of Tech’s graduates and each year a small number are chosen on the basis of their record at Tech. On occasion they act astemporary instructors in their respective departments while the subject teacher is occupied with other matters. These students are a constant source of pride to the school, the student body, and faculty. Upon completion of their work they often attend the finest technical schools in the country. “He said to use glue but I’d rather Scotch Tape” First Row: Nee, Denney, Stultz, Casey, Keefe. Due to their unstinting efforts to produce a top- flight Yearbook the members of the staff have prepared for the Senior Class a perfect record of its year at Technical. It all began in October with the picking of a staff, and from then on the various jobs involved with getting out a Year- book were begun and finally finished on the deadline in March. Before school and after school the members of the TECHNICIAN staff were working relentlessly on the many problems which confronted them. It was a team effort and, as captain of the team, Mr. P. J. Foley gave us excellent assistance. First Row: Mr. Foley, Sheridan, Lee Cavanaugh, Clancy, Fredericks, Rahall, Mumolo. Mr. Gibbons Mr. Mahar Mr. Kelly In Memoriam Mr. John Cronin Mr. Cronin of our Machine Department, who passed away January 16th, will be long remembered by all students and faculty, who came to admire, love, and respect his devotion to our school. John F. Cronin was a graduate of the class of 38 and carried with him, throughout his career, that “Esprit de Corps” of giving all he could for “his boys” at Technical High School. Throughout his sickness he continued to plan and devote his time to the welfare of the school. He died young, but will live long in the memory of all who had the privilege of being associated with him. WHILE WE PLAY... The Tech Tigers .. . 48 FOOTBALL Under the guidance of Coaches Moran, O’Bryant, and Burgess the Tigers had a highly successful season. An in- experienced but eager team lost the first two games but gained valuable experience enabling them to go on and win their remaining six games. By doing so they finished in second place in the league. The defensive team gave a fine performance all year, al- lowing only 18 points in league play. They were sparked by the defensive line play of seniors Clifford, Williams, Rae, Manning, Dolan, Seminavicious, and P. Brown. Theupper- classmen in the defensive secondary were Giles, Abany, Johnson, Dixon, Carter, Bennet, and Mastorelli. The offense also made a good show of themselves, scor- ing 214 points for the season. The seniors in the forward wall consisted of Accomando, Connelly, McGregor, McIn- tyre, and O’Conner. The “Backfield Brutes” were seniors D. Brown, Bennett, and Bennett. This year’s tri-captains McGregor, McIntyre, and Cedor- chuck (who was injured and out for the year) pass the chain of command over to Gerry Fisher, next year’s captain- elect. The outlook for next year is good with standout under- classmen like Kevin Farmer, Ron Adams, Ed Molly, Bill Hogan, “Sally” Gillis, Steve Monis, Pete Marino, Gerry Fisher, “Marco”? Swartz, Frank Baily, and Anthony Perkins. We wish to all returning ballplayers, especially captain- elect Gerry Fisher, and coaches Moran, O’Bryant, and Burgess the best of luck for a successful season in the coming year. Perhaps not the most popular sport in the school, Mr. Kean’s “Tigers” averaged more spirit per man than any other team in the league. Tech is the only team that can boast of having beaten B.C. High and Trade for the past four years without a defeat. In 1966 seven starters will be missing from last year’s championship squad which posted an 11-3 record. This year’s team hopes to return to the top of the league. Lead- ing the way will be Captain Mark Matanes assisted by Hugh Ferguson, George MacDougall, Mike and John Mill- er, and Bill Hogan. Also fighting for berths on the starting team will be Rich Roache, Ray Walden, George Perkins, Steve Nevero, and Ray Forbes. With many positions available Mr. Kean is hoping for a large number of candidates this spring. He knows the boys will carry on in the traditional fighting spirit of a great team. Led by co-captains Zukauskas and Walsh, the varsity, J.V., and freshmen defeated all of their opponents by quite substantial margins in all of their engagements. The deci- sive victories by both the first and second boats in the first encounter of the season proved to be the custom with the Tigers throughout the entire period. Not to be forgotten are the boys of the third boat, who, compelled by the drive and untiring spirit of their stroke, Barry (Rumplestilskin) Swartz, were constantly putting pressure on the second boat for a starting position in the second races. They are Kurt Lewis, Robert Hansen, George Raynor, Richard Fred- ericks, William Sweeney, and Ted Shearrion. Other mem- bers of the Varsity Squad who look good are Marshall Lewis, Ed Malloy, Ralph Williams, Dwain Smalley, the twins Gary and Glenn Yee, Ted Rist, Don Leonard, Arnold Bailey, and Eric Sanchez. History of [Boston Technical High Sc heea BOSTON TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL is a school dedicated to the training of young men for a career in engineering and in the sciences. It was founded in September, 1893, and at that time was called MECHANIC ARTS HIGH SCHOOL. Charles W. Parmenter, from the opening of the school until June of 1823, was the headmaster. The school was dedicated “to further systematic instruction in drawing and mechanic arts, in addition to giving a thorough high school course in which mathematical and scientific branches predominate... .” This was a new concept in education and Mechanic Arts High was one of the first schools in the United States founded t:pon this principle. The original building was located in a “triangle,” formed by Boylston Street and Massachusetts and Huntington Avenues in Boston’s Back Bay. The first year one hundred sixty pupils attended the school and thereafter it grew rapidly. Extensions were made in the old building in 1890 and 1909. In 1944 the name of the school was changed to BOSTON TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL, since this seemed a more appropriate title and one better suited for the school. A post-war emphasis on technical edu- cation increased interest in Boston Technical High School. The school’s enrollment reached 1600 in the early 1950’s. An annex was opened on School Street at Egleston Square to handle the growing student body. 1959-60 was a big year for Tech. The location of the school was changed from the Back Bay to Rox- bury. Roxbury Memorial High School at Warren and Townsend Streets was closed and after renovation and reconstruction became Boston Technical High School. 1959-60 was also a sad year for Tech. Many memo- ries were left behind in our previous domicile. Perhaps the greatest was the loss of military drill. Since its opening in 1893, Mechanic Arts High School and later Tech had been given a unique flavor by military drill and the annual School Boy Parade, but this ended abruptly in the changing of buildings. However, this tradition can still be seen in part in the drill team we maintain and the military salute still used at as- semblies. Boston Technical High School has almost 70 years of tradition and reputation behind it and the changes in the buildings has brought an improvement in teach- ing facilities and tools that will give it continued longevity. The present Boston Technical High has some of the most modern equipment available to schools. Our shops are some of the finest equipped in the eastern part of Massachusetts. We have fine laboratories for our science departments and two gymnasiums to carry out the physical education program. With this fine equipment, many classrooms for each of our academic departments. and gifted teachers, the school continues to carry on its fine reputation for excellence in educa- tion. During 1962 Tech was evaluated by two prominent study groups which found our school to be one of the finest in the nation. Specifically, the two groups were the Sargent Committee from Harvard University and a regional accreditory body composed of teachers from Massachusetts. All phases of the curriculum were evaluated and the conclusions of the committees were most favorable indeed! Throughout the past years Tech’s graduates have entered practically every major university in the United States. Recently Tech has sent students to M.I.T., Princeton, Yale, California Institute of Tech- nology, Boston College, and Worcester Polytechnical. And in most cases Tech students showed that they were capable of academic excellence. They have en- tered almost every profession and are employed in nearly every state in the union and many of the coun- tries of the world. The training they received at Boston Technical High was, unquestionably, of inestimable value in their academic and professional success. 111 FAQs ees PHOTOGRAPHS are PERSONALIZED for PERFECTION in YEAR BOOKS 367 Boylston Street Boston, Mass.
