JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY 1917 - 1963 And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man. Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us here the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. Witha good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God’s work must truly be our own. —from the Inaugural Address, January 20, 1961

Mr. Conway congratulates James Amirsakis, class president. Charles Darwin, eminent English biologist, popularly known as the father of the theory of evolution, coined a sci- entific phrase, “‘survival of the fittest” that was meant origi- nally to explain how and why some animal species lived on and others disappeared in the age-old struggle for life. Journalists lifted the phrase out of context and made it a measuring stick to explain why in the fierce competitive war- fare of human struggle some individuals “‘succeeded”’ and others “‘failed’’. Note the quotation marks. “Success” in their vocabulary means money and high position. By this vicious principle heroes, saints, and martyrs are failures. However, every erroneous belief contains some element of truth, otherwise even the gullible would never had swallowed it. The element of truth is that in the rough and tumble of life’s battle trained intelligence and power frequently bring good paying jobs and keen enjoyment in one’s work. For most of us trained intelligence and its by-product, power, re- sult from self-discipline, patience, temperance, and deter- mination not to quit until we have conquered. All of these valuable qualities are strictly human and moral and come to us largely by our free choice, hardened in time into price- lessly valuable habits. So the “‘fittest”? to survive are the one’s with the best mor- al habits. See to it that you develop these habits. Everett ]. Conway Headmaster Book covers for sale.
