Coveney The senior class at Boston Technical High School takes great pleasure in dedicating the 1964 Technician to Mr. Charles H. Coveney of the English Department. An outstanding teacher with more than a spark of Irish wit, Mr. Coveney graduated from the College of the Holy Cross. Shortly there- after he attended St. John’s Seminary where he was a student for two years. Mr. Coveney began his teaching career at the Thomas Hart School where he taught for a short time. He then taught at English High School from 1923-1928. In the la tter year he joined the faculty of Roxbury Memorial High School. In 1931 he received his Fd. M. degree from Boston Teachers’ College. He has also done graduate work at Boston College and Boston University. While as an English teacher at Roxbury Memorial he was swimming coach, hockey coach, senior class adviser, yearbook adviser and director of the school newspaper. In 1960 he joined the English Department at Boston Technical High School. Mr. Coveney is a member of the Catholic Alumni Sodality, the Holy Cross Club of Boston, the American Hockey Coaches Association, and the Massachusetts State Coaches Association. For several years he has been af- f iliated with the Boston Red Sox, the Metropolitan Track League, and many other sporting groups. | To you, Mr. Coveney, we wish you much future happiness, and take great pride in the fact that we had the magnificent fortune to have known you as a genial teacher and close friend. ; Douglas Wynne Mr. O’Brien counsels a freshman. The Yearbook Editorial Staff Richard Kearney This yearbook is the signpost of the last mile of close association. For four years of trials and tribulations, victories and defeats, we the Class of 1964 have been closely-knit into a working com- munity of students. Next year will find us going by different paths that will cross only at reunions. We of the yearbook staff, although regretting the cause, have endeavored to create a lasting re- minder of the friendship, solemnity, and joy of our years spent at Tech. We must acknowledge the advice and assistance of Mr. Patrick J. Foley, our yearbook director. Along with our wish for your enjoyment of this book goes our sincerest desire for your success and happiness. The Editors Mr. O’Bryant gives advice to upperclassmen. Mr. Conway congratulates James Amirsakis, class president. Charles Darwin, eminent English biologist, popularly known as the father of the theory of evolution, coined a sci- entific phrase, “‘survival of the fittest” that was meant origi- nally to explain how and why some animal species lived on and others disappeared in the age-old struggle for life. Journalists lifted the phrase out of context and made it a measuring stick to explain why in the fierce competitive war- fare of human struggle some individuals “‘succeeded”’ and others “‘failed’’. Note the quotation marks. “Success” in their vocabulary means money and high position. By this vicious principle heroes, saints, and martyrs are failures. However, every erroneous belief contains some element of truth, otherwise even the gullible would never had swallowed it. The element of truth is that in the rough and tumble of life’s battle trained intelligence and power frequently bring good paying jobs and keen enjoyment in one’s work. For most of us trained intelligence and its by-product, power, re- sult from self-discipline, patience, temperance, and deter- mination not to quit until we have conquered. All of these valuable qualities are strictly human and moral and come to us largely by our free choice, hardened in time into price- lessly valuable habits. So the “‘fittest”? to survive are the one’s with the best mor- al habits. See to it that you develop these habits. Everett ]. Conway Headmaster Book covers for sale. JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY 1917 - 1963 And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man. Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us here the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. Witha good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God’s work must truly be our own. —from the Inaugural Address, January 20, 1961 Everett J. The Artisan is now in its fifty-eighth year of publication. The combined talents of its staff, both literary and artistic, have won it several awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, of which it is a member of long standing. Being a general magazine, the Artisan contains not only the fiction, poetry, and editorials of Tech’s budding young writers, but also the accounts of our illustrious athletic squads, outstanding clubs, and just plain news from the stu- dent body itself. Under the direction of Mr. James Burns, the literary advisor, and Mr. Ralph Rosenthal, the art ad- visor, this fine publication has earned itself a prominent place among high school publications across thenation. The Artisan regularly exchanges issues with over three dozen of the nation’s finest high schools and prep schools. This year the staff was one of the largest and best qualified in the his- tory of the magazine. In the years to come, the Artisan will grow in importance as the sounding board for the intelligent opinions of the students of Boston Technical, and as Tech’s calling card at prominent schools throughout America. ‘“Tiddleywinks in school already ?” wt os: 4 — a ® mee Gl VLTY- Third Row: MacLeod, Donovan, Currier, Swartz, Colton, Santoro, Tansey, Ducharme, Block, Reis. One of the most colorful clubs, under the expert guidance of Mr. Ralph Rosenthal, is the ART CLUB. For in this club the many creative posters used in the school, the droll cartoons for the Artisan, and all the realistic settings in our assemblies are produced. Comprising of those who have a bent with paint and brush, the ART CLUB often encourages some of these boys to continue this gifted work in art schools after graduation. Further works of the Art Club can be noticed throughout this yearbook where the members have greatly contributed to its perfection. ‘Now where the heck’s the letter Q?” BAND Third Row: Burns, Koss, Garrity, Fisher, Bolduc, Jardinico, Walsh, Smiley, Satkevich, Halfkenny, Sprince. One of the most talented groups at Technical High is the highly enthusiastic, colorful BAND. Mr. Kahn, musical director, has trained his young musicians to perform like professionals. At Assemblies the blare of trumpets, the roll of drums, together with brass and woodwinds are combined in a musical picture to the delight of both students and fac- ulty. In addition, there are several virtuosi who provide the spark and vitality of this highly entertaining group. It is, undoubtedly, one of the finest of school bands to be assem- bled in Boston. “Sure it’s written in English”’ CAMERA CLUB Third Row: Murphy, Norris, Cooper, Cohen. Second Row: Chan, Pappas, Cohen, Graezinger, Sullivan, Eurbush, Berkovitz. First Row: Mr. Mulloy, Cassidy, Hungerford, Kelly. Being one of the most interesting and fruitful groups in the school, the CAMERA CLUB is also one of the most im- portant. For not only do the members of this club learn of ° all the problems of the camera world but they also solve them by the taking and processing of pictures throughout the school year. Under the direction of Mr. Mulloy and Mr. Burns the eager shutter bugs aid inthetaking of pictures for the Artisan and Yearbook through which they proved that ‘“‘one picture is worth a thousand words.” At the end of each year a vast number of commendable pictures are added to the evergrowing file of the CAMERA CLUB. ““The Catacombs” CERAMICS AND POMBICE uleaG es Third Row: Arena, Reis, Silva, Wright, Steele, Martin, Santoro, Hickox, Cassidy, Chiles, Enrici, Raso. First Row: Mr. Rosenthal, Garneau, Clasby, Regan, Tocci, Kahn, Marich, Dwyer, Mel- ville, DeNatale. How many high schools can boast of a club which acts as a springboard for sculptors and potters? This select group of highly skilled artisans is one of the most popular and active organizations in this school. Led by our highly ' talented art instructor, Mr. Ralph Rosenthal, this group of young men is living and breathing proof that appreciation of art and artifacts is not dead in the minds of this genera- tion. These young men learn the basic techniques of ceram- ics, mosaics, the molding of clay, and the making of glaze, not by reading from a text, but by actual doing. The im- portance of an organization dedicated to the sculptural arts is necessary to a well-rounded education and cannot be taken lightly. ce . and memorize the Gettysburg Address” Third Row: Alexander, Bracken, Cunningham, Tarlowski, Yench, Polit, Cowean, Bark- er, Vice Pres. The CHESS CLUB, under the direction of Mr. Gordon, carries the honor and prestige of the school into the field of the “Game of Kings.” Having many proficient members, the club has become one of the best in the city. They have defeated a number of other high school chess clubs, a factor attesting to their growing skill. It isone of the most respect- ed activities in the school and requires much concentration in addition to a keen mind. Next year the team hopes to realize the potential of several juniors and sophomores and, as a result, continue to maintain its high standing in school- boy competition in the Greater Boston Area. Mr. Gordon is faculty adviser. “T picked this near the Blarney Stone in old County Cork” CORRIDOR PATROL Third Row: Marshall, Joy, Rudman, Alcarez, Adams, Sahl, Giorgio, Cervone. Security of personal property, and silence in the corridors are basic to the efficiency of a large educational complex. The Corridor Patrol fulfills the need for a force of dedicated young men to handle the mana gement of our vast corridors. Under the leadership of Mr. Cronin, these students guard the various floors of our school against the intrusion of unauth- orized travelers and are instrumental in the passage of stu- dents from one lunch to another. In such a large physical plant as ours, some sort of traffic managers and security guards are essential, and our fine Corridor Patrol fills the bill admirably. ‘There he goes; get him!” DRAFTING STANDARDS RETURN TO LIBRARY BOSTON TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL WARREN TOWNSEND STREETS DORCHESTER 21. Approximately fifteen years ago the DRAFTING STAND- ARDS CLUB was organized in order to familiarize students with drafting techniques that exceed the scope of the high school course of study. Also, the club gathers together the numerous skills of drafting which become valuable to the drafting courses. Under the dynamic leadership of Mr. Carpenito many of our alumni go on to become draftsmen, technicians, and engineers. Students learn the complex na- ture of form, proportion, and structural relationships while seriously exploring new ways in which drafting may be re- lated to the business world. Obviously this activity is one of the most outstanding in the school. ““Mr. Memorial used this”’ DRIVER EDUCATION asi a a 8 : Third Row: Daraboschi, Lee, Foley, Cronin, Sekula, Cannata. Second Row: Luongo, Bognanno, Zukowski, Kulesza, Campbell, Macaskill, Sullivan. First Row: Mr. Gable, O’Flaherty, Stanton, Kenney, Anderson, Azar, Dangelo, Derany. With an ever-increasing number of automobiles, trucks, and busses on our highways, it is obviousthat the DRIVER EDUCATION Class is of the utmost importance to young people. Under the highly skilled direction of Mr. Gable, numerous members of the student body learn about the tech- nical nature of the automobile. Moreover, the essentials of good driving such as courtesy, and theimportance of proper attitudes are stressed. This background information, though highly theoretical, proves invaluable for students who are desirous of obtaining a driver’s license. Aboveall else, each member learns that safety pays, and that a trained driver is a good driver. ‘‘Just mix these two and Wow!” woe S Third Row: Kotzen, Alcarez, Twoomey, Stamaris, Aiello, Ark, McHugh. Our school’s chapter of the Junior Engineering Technical Society is one of the largest and bestin the state. Under the expert and dedicated guidance of Mr. Broderick, the jets, as they are popularly known, are ever striving to gather more knowledge in the fields of engineering and mechanics. The J. E. T. S. is aninternational organization with headquarters in New York, and although each chapter is autonomous, its basic goals must parallel those of the entire organization, as set forth in this form: 1) To stimulate interest in and offer opportunities to pre- pare for a career in engineering and related fields. 2) To give a preview of the engineering profession and an acquaintance with men active in the field. 3) To aid the student in discovering and appraising his own abilities, aptitudes, and interests in the fields of preparation for engineering, such as mathematics, science, and shop. First Row: Mr. O’Bryant, Macomber, Chin, Halfkenny, Ahearn, Neviachs, Kleinglass, Anderson. Directed by Mr. John O’Bryant, a one-time U. S. Army drill instructor, the main purpose of the JUNIOR DRILL TEAM is to prepare its members in a militaristic type of discipline for service in the Senior Drill Team. A great deal of credit is deserved by the members who sacrifice before and after school time so that they may serve as future Hon- or Guards at our assemblies. The extensive problem of running an orderly and efficient lunchroom is taken in hand by the skilled know-how of Mr. Packard and his proficient staff. Voluntarily these boys give up their free time in order toconductthe noon flow of lunch- room traffic in a better fashion. Other students run the cash registers, assist in the serving of mouth-watering food, and help in the cafeteria when needed. Though still relatively new the Lunch Patrol has become indispensable and appre- ciation is expressed by all who can enjoy a pleasant lunch due to the proficiency of these boys. Table praise is also extended to Mr. Grant and Mr. Gable for their work in di- recting the general demeanor in the entire cafeteria. The pride and joy of any institute of education is its groups of scholars particularly qualified in one field or an- other. Such a group is our excellent Math Club. Being led by the Acting Chairman of the Math Department, Mr. Mur- ray, this year’s club has achieved many goals unattainable in previous years. It is a crossgrain of the largest and best class in this school’s distinguished history. The club’s mem- bers are unequalled in the quality of their scholarship or their dedication to purpose. Many ofthemembers are quali- fied for advanced placement in the college oftheir choice and all are well versed in the symbolism and complexities of basic college math. The students of future years will put an ever- mounting accent on the activities and achievements of the members of this organization, and it should become one of the largest in the school. “Only two cotton-picking paws ?” MUSIC APPRECIATION GEEB Second Row: Donovan, Swanborn, Davis. First Row: Mr. Boatner, Fisher, Walden. The MUSIC APPRECIATION CLUB endeavors to bring listening enjoyment and understanding to the students who have selected this club for an activity. They do not restrict their sources to any one form of music but try to engulf the complete concept of this form of expression. One of the most entertaining features of the clubis the discussion which occurs after a selection has been heard. Mostof the members relate verbally the mood that the composer tried to create and the effect that this mood has made upon them. In the future, music of the Near and Far East as well as Africa will be listened to and discussed. It is the hope of the group that many more students will attempt to understand the only uni- versal means of communication. Mr. Boatneristhe director. “Zap! First Row: Mr. Foley, Trumfio, Draper, Pappas, Cohen, Frasca, Stein, Hill. The National Honor Society is the cream ofour outstand- ing student body. Through the years, Technical has never failed to qualify members for admittance since the club’s in- ception. Mr. Gordon is the faculty advisor, acting as liaison between the young men and the various colleges, universities, and institutes that are seeking such fine scholars. The achievements of these students are a source of pride for their parents, communities, and, above all, Boston Technical High School. These are the leaders of the Twenty-First Century, and we all have confidence in the future of this America of ours when we see such able and diligent men dedicating themselves to the high ideals of democracy through the pub- lic schools. ‘Frankenstein Memorial Hospital” Third Row: Prusak, Kilduff, Bradley, Hoffman, Goldman, Keller, McKenna, Sweeney. The RADIO CLUB was established in 1961 and is now directed by Mr. John Diggins. Since its inception the club has been most popular and itnow consists of about 30 mem- bers. The primary objective of the club is stimulate student interest in electronics, and to provide opportunity to obtain the prized radio amateur license. Within the first few months of operation several students took the required examinations and earned their station licenses. Now the club operates on both 6 and 2 meters (amateur bands) under the station call of K I P F portable one, Boston, Mass.; both radiophone and radio telegraph are used. Equipmentis gradually being acquired, and with the approval of the recently formulated by-laws, it is expected that the F.C.C. will grant Technical High a permanent license. ” “According to Dr. Freud . . . First Row: Mr. Holland, Seastrom, Wilman, Hutchinson, Ulevicius, Robinson, Greeberg, Skaparaas, Flaherty. With the exception of graduation the senior prom is the highlight of the year for all seniors. And it is a truly gay, enjoyable festivity for each senior and his vivacious date. Formally attired in white evening jackets, the boys are sec- ond in appeal only to their lovely dates. But without the energetic work of the SENIOR PROM COMMITTEE the evening of all evenings would be less than a success. For these students must hire an orchestra, print adance schedule, sell tickets, and many other tasks of a similar nature. Mr. Holland provides highly competent assistance to the PROM COMMITTEE. The 1964 Prom was unquestionably a mar- velous affair and will be long remembered by all who parti- cipated. ‘Don’t understand ? One of the most rewarding and intellectual clubs is the SCIENCE CLUB. Under the expert guidance of Mr. Lamp- kin the boys are familiarized with allthe branches of science. If they desire to further their knowledge in specific fields, they can do so either through club experiments or through the reading of the wide selection of books contained in the club’s library. There is a great deal of work involved in the SCIENCE CLUB, for throughout the year the members work on individual projects which are entered in the Science Fair. The better projects then go to the Latin School City Fair and the winners then go on to the M.I.T. State Fair. Each year Tech boys have taken many of the most coveted awards, and this year was no exception. Tech students again were in the forefront of award winners ! “No! The most indispensable group at Technical High is with- out doubt the SECURITY PATROL. Members of this activ- ity are responsible for the orderly filing of students between classes and they perform their demanding duty exceptionally well. They are directed by our outstanding coach, Mr. Thomas Moran, who has reduced the complexities of secur- ity to a minimum. Students belonging to this activity volun- tarily give up their study periods and are positioned at key places throughout the vast corridors of the building. They maintain law and order at all times. Members are chosen on the basis of academic ability and high character. In more recent times they have taken on the chore of aiding office personnel who are in charge of the public address system. ““At last! They dedicate themselves to this oppressive job, and as a result they insure the financial success of the Year- book. These boys are the most mechanically able of Tech’s graduates and each year a small number are chosen on the basis of their record at Tech. On occasion they act astemporary instructors in their respective departments while the subject teacher is occupied with other matters. These students are a constant source of pride to the school, the student body, and faculty. Upon completion of their work they often attend the finest technical schools in the country. ‘‘Erasers aren’t for eating, son’ STUDENT COUNCIL First Row: Streetman, Williams, Mr. Leary, Wilman. The STUDENT COUNCIL was organized in 1911 and is the oldest activity at Technical High. Throughout the course of the year student members convene and discuss various school problems. With the help of Mr. Leary solu- tions are found to these problems. Each home room sends one of its members to the council and in this way a truly representative spirit is reached. Moreover, class presidents, executive editors of the ARTISAN and the TECHNICIAN, and chairmen of the several school organizations are mem- bers. Parliamentary procedure is followed at all times in order to facilitate matters and to imbue each member with an understanding of democratic processes. Loyalty and service to the school are the guiding principles of the council. This activity has proved invaluable on numerous occasions and will continue to form an integral part of the activities program at Technical. “The sausage factory”’ John DeNatale : | James Amirsakis Sports Editor Executive Editor Robert Hodges Mr. Patrick J. Congratulations are in order for the superb work done by the Editorial and Production Staffs of the Year- book in the past year. Due to their unstinting efforts to YEARBOOK produce a top-flight Yearbook the members of the staff have prepared for the Senior Class a perfect record of its years at Technical. It all began in October with the STAFF picking of a staff, and from then on the various jobs involved with getting out a Yearbook were begun and finally finished on the deadline in March. Before school and after school the members of the TECHNICIAN staff were working relentlessly on the many problems which confronted them. It was a team effort and, as captain of the team, Mr. P. J. BASEBALL Captains Bob Regan and Don Bunker A very young but capable team represented Boston Tech- nical in 1964. Led by Captain Al Pucino, All-City League fielder, the Technicians upended all the City League’s big powers. Our boys managed to upset Boston Latin and Bos- ton English. They were also the only team in the league to top Boston College High three times. Several seniors closed out their careers: Captain Pucino, a good long ball hitter; Errol Saunders, an outstanding second-baseman; Tom Ross, a timely clutch hitter; and John Dean, a dependable pitcher. A bright spot in the season was the outstanding play of newcomers. Bob Regan, Chick Streetman, and Don Bunker all show signs of being great ones before their high school days are over. We wish good luck to Mr. Keane, and to Co-Captains Art Casella and Al Pucino, two of the finest athletes ever to wear the uniform of Boston Technical. With a new season and a great amount of talent, 1965 looks very promising. 46 Bases treet: a = Don Bunker Bill Stanton aes aR 4 a a= . Our seasoned veterans of past successes were stunned when a strong English team upset the “champs” in the season’s first race. With renewed vigor and an arduous practice schedule emphasizing grueling long distance rowing our team came back strong. In the next race the competition was overwhelmed as our lads swept theday, winning all five rows from varsity, through JV, to freshman. Our vaunted first varsity crew was clocked in record smashing time to win by a large margin. As the season progressed the strong rivalry was continued and amid close competition it was Captain Bob Foley’s un- sung heroes of Tech’s second varsity boat that saved the championship as they went undefeated to provide the margin Sabourin, Foley and Keating for a well earned team victory. , OO he: +. FOOTBALL When the team met for its first practice in September they were a fairly inexperienced group. But our fine coaches worked to put together a functioning unit which would meet Brighton in the Jamboree. After defeating Brighton, Jamaica Plain and Latin, Tech ran into a tough, determined Boston College High team which handed them its lone defeat of the season. Tech bounced right back and defeated Stoughton, Hyde Park, Dorchester, English, and Trade to become City League Co- Champions. Fine running by John Kane, Tom Marshall, John Kenney, excellent ball handling by (co-Capt.) Bob Regan, and rug- ged line play by Chickie Streetman, Jim McIntyre, Cleo Wooten, Dick Kearney, Charlie Ouellette, John Barbatao, and (co-Capt.) Jim (Greek) Amirsakis accounted for our success. Defensive players included Bob Femino, Harold Hutchinson, Timmy Kerins, Ron Luongo, Dan Marich, Karl Farmer, Paul Fitzpatrick, Dave Cunio, Bill Hayes, and Paul Rowean. Coming back next year are backs such as: Leon Bernid- skis, Dave Brown, Jimmy Johnson, Larry Bennett, and Bob Gillis. Up front will be Steve Cedarchuch, Leo MacGregor, Jim McIntyre, Ralph Williams, Vyto Simanavicious, Paul Juskiewicz, Kevin Clifford, Jim O’Connor and Jimmy Ac- commando. Captain Barnes and manager Sprince 1k] The Basketball team, behind their very capable captain, : . @ : Harry Barnes, and the fine coaching of Mr. Edward Grant, had a very successful season, winning the city’s champion- ship with a record of 13-1. This marked the first time in the school’s existence that the varsity hoopsters finished atop the city league standings. The big game of the season was the rubber game against B.C. High, each team having lost one game. This game was a crucial one for both clubs becauseit was to decide the city championship. The Blue and White simply outclassed their opponent in this game beating them by a final score of 59-45. Kevin Callahan and Harry Barnes were the high scorers for Tech scoring 26 and 17 points respectively. Strong defensive play was the secret to the team’s success, allowing an average of only 48 points agame. The seniors who contributed to the team’s success were: Harry Barnes, Chick Streetman, Chuck Winston, Dave Jasie, Donnie Hay, Bob Johnson, John Sawyer, and Joe Hourihan. Kevin Callahan was elected captain of next year’s squad. He will head a cast of six returning lettermen. 54 JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL Second Row: Mahone, Campbell, Corbin, Hurley, Carter, Coach Grant, Inglese, San- chez, White, Holland, Crichlo. Basketball team is a testing ground for future varsity players. Here experience is gained which will make a polished player. The emphasis is on training, but this year’s J.V. definitely won its share of games, showing a con- siderable amount of hustle and determination. Cross Country Champions The first day of practice at White Stadium was indeed a dismal one for our Tech Harriers. Fromlast year’s top ten, eight had been graduated, and Craig Robertson, our captain, had joined the Marines. This left our new captain Andy Hak, the only remaining member ofthat select group, to lead the much underrated squad of harriers. To help in the rebuilding, Captain Hak had veteran Sen- iors Bill Cunningham, Alan Nord, and Bob Torosian. Re- turning as juniors were John Sheridan and Clarence Baker; also Bob Brooks, a standout sophomore. The squad was fortunate to have Alex Zedros, a great runner. Other outstanding newcomers were Senior Dave Alexan- der, whose first year with the squad was a good one, along with juniors Alex Barnoth, John Stanton, and Lawson Riley. Our captain, Andy Hak, was the only returnee of last year’s elite group. But to help him in the coming cam- paigns, captain Hak had Alex Zedros, Bob Brooks, Bill Cummingham, John Sheridan, Dave Alexander, Alan Nord and Bob Torosian. Led by captain Hak, Tech won three and lost two and managed to retain our City and Reggie Titles. We also beat our old rivals from English High. As the season progressed our young unproven team be- came stronger and we managed to score a few upsets. We were rated underdogs in both the City and Reggie Meets. The squad proved its merits in the Reggies, even though our highly favored captain collapsed from cramps and heat exhaustion. This year’s team has proven its merit under the skilled guidance of Coach Grant and theleadership of Captain Hak. This year’s team will surely be contenders for the State Title in the very near future. Mawes 1T Fourth Row: O’Leary, Hayes, C. Captain Hak meets next year’s captain, John Sheridan Our Tech harriers once again had a successful year. Our team showed their true colors by easily winning the City Meet. Andy Hak was first with the fast time of 13:31 with Zedros, Sheridan, Cunningham, and Bob Brooks running their best. Our harriers put in the effort and won the very closely contested meet by 3 points. Zedros was second in 13:54 with Brooks third, Cunningham eighth, Sheridan eleventh, Riley seventeenth. Scoring was Tech 41, Latin 44, English 45, East Boston 13, Trade 145, Dorchester 147. The Tech runners proved themselves a fine team even though they were very young. We placed ninth in the State Meet and surprised those who doubted our ability. Fine per- formances were given by all the seven chosen to run; Bob Brooks, Andy Hak, Dave Alexander, John Sheridan, Clar- ence Baker, L. Riley, and Alex Zedros. Coach Grant urges that more boys should come out for track, for there are many opportunities for those that strive to excel. This year’steam, like that of last year’s, has four graduating seniors, co-captains Bob Regan and Peter Fleming, Mike “Slap-Shot” Shanley and Ed Flaherty. Tech was well supplied with valuable utility men, such as: Juniors; “Spanky” Wright, Mark Matanes, Kevin Clifford, and John Aldred, Sophomores: J ohn Brad- ley, Bill Hogan, and Paul Fitzgerald, and some up-and- coming Freshmen: Vinnie Shanley, John Foley, Bill Hanson, Ed Stella, and John O’Conner. Tech was proud to place three players on the All Boston City Team and the Boston AllConference Team: Bob Regan, Peter Fleming, and Steve Cedarchuck. Mike Shanley was also voted to the City All Star Team for his fine defensive plays. Although Tech did not qualify for the State Tourna- ment, the ‘“64”’’ team will be remembered as one of the best all around teams in the state. Thegames were always close; in spite of outstanding skating and team work, the puck was fickle and did not always bounce in Tech’s favor. The Freshmen not only played the teams within the City League, but also went out oftownand played other freshmen teams. These teams were: Brookline High, Rindge Tech, Cambridge Latin, Arlington, and two of the strongest teams in the state; Belmont Hill and the Weymouth Bantams. Their record at the end of the season was 7-1-1 but this did not count the many times they beat the seniors and the as- sistants of Tech. It was founded in September, 1893, and at that time was called MECHANIC ARTS HIGH SCHOOL. Charles W. Parmenter, from the opening of the school until June of 1823, was the headmaster. The school was dedicated “to further systematic instruction in drawing and mechanic arts, in addition to giving a thorough high school course in which mathematical and scientific branches predominate. ...” This was a new concept in education and Mechanic Arts High was one of the first schools in the United States founded t:pon this principle. The original building was located in a “triangle,” formed by Boylston Street and Massachusetts and Huntington Avenues in Boston's Back Bay. The first year one hundred sixty pupils attended the school and thereafter it grew rapidly. Extensions were made in the old building in 1890 and 1909. In 1944 the name of the school was changed to BOSTON TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL, since this seemed a more appropriate title and one better suited for the school. A post-war emphasis on technical edu- cation increased interest in Boston Technical High School. The school’s enrollment reached 1600 in the early 1950's. An annex was opened on School Street at Egleston Square to handle the growing student body. 1959-60 was a big year for Tech. The location of the school was changed from the Back Bay to Rox- bury. Roxbury Memorial High School at Warren and Townsend Streets was closed and after renovation and reconstruction became Boston Technical High School. 1959-60 was also a sad year for Tech. Many memo- ries were left behind in our previous domicile. Perhaps the greatest was the loss of military drill. Since its opening in 1893, Mechanic Arts High School and later Tech had been given a unique flavor by military drill 111 and the annual School Boy Parade, but this ended abruptly in the changing of buildings. However, this tradition can still be seen in part in the drill team we maintain and the military salute still used at as- semblies. Boston Technical High School has almost 70 years of tradition and reputation behind it and the changes in the buildings has brought an improvement in teach- ing facilities and tools that will give it continued longevity. The present Boston Technical High has some of the most modern equipment available to schools. Our shops are some of the finest equipped in the eastern part of Massachusetts. We have fine laboratories for our science departments and two gymnasiums to carry out the physical education program. With this fine equipment, many classrooms for each of our academic departments. and gifted teachers, the school continues to carry on its fine reputation for excellence in educa- tion. During 1962 Tech was evaluated by two prominent study groups which found our school to be one of the finest in the nation. Specifically, the two groups were the Sargent Committee from Harvard University and a regional accreditory body composed of teachers from Massachusetts. All phases of the curriculum were evaluated and the conclusions of the committees were most favorable indeed! Throughout the past years Tech’s graduates have entered practically every major university in the United States. Recently Tech has sent students to M.I.T., Princeton, Yale, California Institute of Tech- nology, Boston College, and Worcester Polytechnical. And in most cases Tech students showed that they were capable of academic excellence. They have en- tered almost every profession and are employed in nearly every state in the union and many of the coun- tries of the world. The training they received at Boston Technical High was, unquestionably, of inestimable value in their academic and professional success. =] NOW ia Ole Deis : nf [OQ SAYA FEU) Clogs 0 G2 ae = VAR NH Vhnons Hs TO THE GRADUATING = =e... ee) Seo 1 ey HED GEASS OF Ge | ( ih a oe eAJHENT TOLD YOU | e TO ORIBBLE DOWN F : WELL.....
