Dy oeeated. to the raining of young men... BOSTON TECHNICAL HIGH Boston Technical High School is a school dedicated to the training of young men for a career in engineering and the sciences. It was founded in September, 1893, and at that time was called Mechanic Arts High School. The headmaster from the opening of the school until June of 1923 was Charles W. Parmenter. The school was dedicated “to further systematic instruction in drawing and the mechanic arts, in addition to giving a thorough high school course in which mathematical and scientific branches predomi- nate....” This was a new idea in education and Mechanic Arts High was one of the first schools in the United States based upon it. The original building was located in a “triangle” formed by Boylston Street and Massachusetts and Huntington Avenues in Boston's Back Bay. The first year one hundred sixty pupils attended the school.and thereafter it grew rapidly. Extensions were made in the old building in 1899 and 1909. The retiring headmaster, Mr. Parmenter, was succeeded in September of 1923 by Mr. Adelbert Morrison, under whose administration the school grew in enroll- ment and fame. The retirement of Mr. Morrison in 1943, gave Mechanic Arts High School, then 50 years old, a new headmaster, Mr. D. Leo Daley, who later became Assistant Superintendent of Schools. In 1944 the school’s name was changed to Boston Technical High School, since this seemed a more modern term and one better suited to the school. . Walter T. Durnan succeeded Mr. Daly in 1947 and brilliantly led “Tech” until 1958. In the early 1950’s “Tech’s” enrolment had reached 1600 and the school opened an annex to handle the growing student body. The annex was located on School Street in Egleston Square. Interest in Boston Technical High School increased during the 1950’s because of the post-war emphasis on technical education. 1959-60 was a big year for Tech. The location of the school was to be changed from the Back Bay to Roxbury. The old building was then 65 years old and a more modern building was available. Roxbury Memorial High at Warren and Townsend Streets was closed, and after renovation and reconstruction it became Boston Technical High. 1959-60 was also a sad year for Tech. Many memories were left behind in the change of buildings, but perhaps the greatest loss was that of military drill. Since its opening in 1893 Mechanic Arts High School and later Tech had been given a unique flavor by military drill and the annual school boy parade, but this ended abruptly in the change of buildings. However, this tradition can still be seen in part in the drill team we maintain and the military salute still used at assemblies. Boston Technical High School has some 60 years of tradition and reputation behind it and the change in buildings has brought an improvement in teaching facilities and tools that will give it continued longevity. The present Boston Technical High has some of the most modern equipment available to schools. Our shops are some of the finest equipped in the eastern part of Massachusetts. We have fine laboratories for our science departments, and two gymnasiums to carry on the physical education program. With this fine equip- ment and many classrooms for each of our academic departments the school continues to carry on its fine reputation for excellence in education. Throughout the past 60 odd years Tech’s graduates have entered practically every major university in the United States. For the past few years Tech has sent students to M.L.T., Princeton, Yale, California Institute of Tech., Boston College, Worcester Polytechnical, and in most cases the Tech student has proven himself capable of academic excellence. They have entered almost every profession and are employed in nearly every state in the union and many of the countries of the world. The training they received at Boston Technical High has helped in laying the foundations of their success. Karl P. Heinz 5 Thomas Greene

Shortly the Class of 1962 will pass through the portals of Boston Technical High for the last time as students. It has been a profitable four years at Tech, and each and every one of us will carry away a great feeling of what it was like to be part of the student body at this great school. The Technician Staff hopes that you enjoy your year- book, for it has been a long year of hard but at the same time profitable work. We were very lucky to have as our advisor this year Mr. Patrick J. Foley, who has done an excellent job in helping us piece the information to- gether until we obtained the finished product. The time has now come when we must separate and go our various ways, but whenever we may meet again, may we always be mindful of the wonderful memories of Boston Tech. ROBERT F. TAYLOR Editor-in-Chief
