W. possess all through our iri A distinguished scientist, addressing a graduating class at M.I.T., defined education as “Emancipation from the thralldom of incompetence.” Here is deep food for thought on a great and vital theme. True enough, education, if genuine, must discipline, must free us from the slavery of ignorance and inefficiency. Therefore, as far as it goes, the above definition is good and worthy, if not great and inspiring. It says nothing about rising on the stepping stones of our dead selves to higher, loftier, nobler, more sublime things. However, before we can ascend the steep mountain peaks of wisdom to which philosophy and religion beckon us, we learn to conquer ourselves, to put under heel laziness, apathy, and ignorance. We must become efficient in some worthwhile trade or profession. Excelsior! Best ahead fo John Osgood Pla Experiences ee oo

W. are happy... to editata this lechnicitn fo Me. Edward A. Foley Mr. Edward F. Foley was born in Taunton, Massachusetts on January 26, 1916. He attended local schools before graduating from Boston English High School in 1936. Shortly thereafter he matriculated at McGill University. After World War II he en- rolled at Boston University. Here he received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, the latter in 1948. Mr. Foley taught chem- istry and physics in Dedham, Bridgewater, and Boston Trade School before joining the faculty at Boston Technical High School in 1952. In the summer of 1953, Mr. Foley was awarded a Westinghouse Science Fellowship at M.I.T. Until 1962, when he became Chairman of the Science Department at Boston Trade School, Mr. Foley was an outstanding teacher of chemistry. This reputation was enhanced when he was chosen to study advanced science at Harvard University during the 1958-1959 academic year. ‘ For ten years Mr. Foley was a significant part of the Technical community. With a Maccabean dedication to duty he did much to stimulate scholarship, promote worthy leadership, and to in- spire our youth to achieve the highest ideals of character and service. He was unquestionably a major part of Tech’s modus operandi. On the one hand we regret his departure, but on the other we are proud in the knowledge that his service and capa- bilities have been rec ognized. To you, Mr. Edward F. Foley, we wish an abundance of good health and fortune. We shall always remember you as a true friend and an excellent teacher.
