Shortly the Class of 1962 will pass through the portals of Boston Technical High for the last time as students. It has been a profitable four years at Tech, and each and every one of us will carry away a great feeling of what it was like to be part of the student body at this great school. The Technician Staff hopes that you enjoy your year- book, for it has been a long year of hard but at the same time profitable work. We were very lucky to have as our advisor this year Mr. Patrick J. Foley, who has done an excellent job in helping us piece the information to- gether until we obtained the finished product. The time has now come when we must separate and go our various ways, but whenever we may meet again, may we always be mindful of the wonderful memories of Boston Tech. ROBERT F. TAYLOR Editor-in-Chief Dy oeeated. to the raining of young men... BOSTON TECHNICAL HIGH Boston Technical High School is a school dedicated to the training of young men for a career in engineering and the sciences. It was founded in September, 1893, and at that time was called Mechanic Arts High School. The headmaster from the opening of the school until June of 1923 was Charles W. Parmenter. The school was dedicated “to further systematic instruction in drawing and the mechanic arts, in addition to giving a thorough high school course in which mathematical and scientific branches predomi- nate....” This was a new idea in education and Mechanic Arts High was one of the first schools in the United States based upon it. The original building was located in a “triangle” formed by Boylston Street and Massachusetts and Huntington Avenues in Boston's Back Bay. The first year one hundred sixty pupils attended the school.and thereafter it grew rapidly. Extensions were made in the old building in 1899 and 1909. The retiring headmaster, Mr. Parmenter, was succeeded in September of 1923 by Mr. Adelbert Morrison, under whose administration the school grew in enroll- ment and fame. The retirement of Mr. Morrison in 1943, gave Mechanic Arts High School, then 50 years old, a new headmaster, Mr. D. Leo Daley, who later became Assistant Superintendent of Schools. In 1944 the school’s name was changed to Boston Technical High School, since this seemed a more modern term and one better suited to the school. . Walter T. Durnan succeeded Mr. Daly in 1947 and brilliantly led “Tech” until 1958. In the early 1950’s “Tech’s” enrolment had reached 1600 and the school opened an annex to handle the growing student body. The annex was located on School Street in Egleston Square. Interest in Boston Technical High School increased during the 1950’s because of the post-war emphasis on technical education. 1959-60 was a big year for Tech. The location of the school was to be changed from the Back Bay to Roxbury. The old building was then 65 years old and a more modern building was available. Roxbury Memorial High at Warren and Townsend Streets was closed, and after renovation and reconstruction it became Boston Technical High. 1959-60 was also a sad year for Tech. Many memories were left behind in the change of buildings, but perhaps the greatest loss was that of military drill. Since its opening in 1893 Mechanic Arts High School and later Tech had been given a unique flavor by military drill and the annual school boy parade, but this ended abruptly in the change of buildings. However, this tradition can still be seen in part in the drill team we maintain and the military salute still used at assemblies. Boston Technical High School has some 60 years of tradition and reputation behind it and the change in buildings has brought an improvement in teaching facilities and tools that will give it continued longevity. The present Boston Technical High has some of the most modern equipment available to schools. Our shops are some of the finest equipped in the eastern part of Massachusetts. We have fine laboratories for our science departments, and two gymnasiums to carry on the physical education program. With this fine equip- ment and many classrooms for each of our academic departments the school continues to carry on its fine reputation for excellence in education. Throughout the past 60 odd years Tech’s graduates have entered practically every major university in the United States. For the past few years Tech has sent students to M.L.T., Princeton, Yale, California Institute of Tech., Boston College, Worcester Polytechnical, and in most cases the Tech student has proven himself capable of academic excellence. They have entered almost every profession and are employed in nearly every state in the union and many of the countries of the world. The training they received at Boston Technical High has helped in laying the foundations of their success. Karl P. Heinz 5 Thomas Greene senna Acivaensan fession. ar onder tee verell 4. Conway lito cate his pro Ab De Or W. possess all through our iri A distinguished scientist, addressing a graduating class at M.I.T., defined education as “Emancipation from the thralldom of incompetence.” Here is deep food for thought on a great and vital theme. True enough, education, if genuine, must discipline, must free us from the slavery of ignorance and inefficiency. Therefore, as far as it goes, the above definition is good and worthy, if not great and inspiring. It says nothing about rising on the stepping stones of our dead selves to higher, loftier, nobler, more sublime things. However, before we can ascend the steep mountain peaks of wisdom to which philosophy and religion beckon us, we learn to conquer ourselves, to put under heel laziness, apathy, and ignorance. We must become efficient in some worthwhile trade or profession. Excelsior! Best ahead fo John Osgood Pla Experiences ee oo W. are happy... to editata this lechnicitn fo Me. Edward A. Foley Mr. Edward F. Foley was born in Taunton, Massachusetts on January 26, 1916. He attended local schools before graduating from Boston English High School in 1936. Shortly thereafter he matriculated at McGill University. After World War II he en- rolled at Boston University. Here he received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, the latter in 1948. Mr. Foley taught chem- istry and physics in Dedham, Bridgewater, and Boston Trade School before joining the faculty at Boston Technical High School in 1952. In the summer of 1953, Mr. Foley was awarded a Westinghouse Science Fellowship at M.I.T. Until 1962, when he became Chairman of the Science Department at Boston Trade School, Mr. Foley was an outstanding teacher of chemistry. This reputation was enhanced when he was chosen to study advanced science at Harvard University during the 1958-1959 academic year. ‘ For ten years Mr. Foley was a significant part of the Technical community. With a Maccabean dedication to duty he did much to stimulate scholarship, promote worthy leadership, and to in- spire our youth to achieve the highest ideals of character and service. He was unquestionably a major part of Tech’s modus operandi. On the one hand we regret his departure, but on the other we are proud in the knowledge that his service and capa- bilities have been rec ognized. To you, Mr. Edward F. Foley, we wish an abundance of good health and fortune. We shall always remember you as a true friend and an excellent teacher. Yt is an onn nae I am deeply grateful for having been chosen as the Dedicatee by the Class of 1962. It is an honor which I will long cherish and never forget. Looking back over the past ten years at Boston Technical High School, I can honestly say that they were the most productive, joyous years of my teaching career. In that time I came to know numerous students who demonstrated an unswerving devotion to the principles of science. This dedication to inductive reasoning became the means whereby many of these young students distinguished themselves in the major colleges and universities throughout the country. And I am equally confident that the Class of 1962 will not only continue the fine tradition established by Tech Alumni, but more important, attain new pinnacles of scientific achievement in the immediate future. Again, let me reiterate my heartfelt thanks for the signal honor be- stowed upon me by the Class of 1962. My earnest good wishes go out to each and every one of you and in the words of H. G. Wells “. . . it is only when knowledge is sought for her own sake that she gives rich and unexepected gifts in an abundance to her servants.” 4 Conway VW lfucivereh be Perey ler Le Outstanding Cilaratienal SE SU bere! fant dither: Me. The ART CLUB, under the brilliant guidance of Mr. Ralph Rosenthal, produces illustrations and truly witty cartoons for “The Artisan,” scenes of high artistic merit for assemblies, posters for many purposes, and numerous masterpieces entered in various art contests throughout the city and the nation. Made up of stu- dents who demonstrate a flair with water colors, oils, free-hand drawing, sketching, and the like, the ART CLUB is often the springboard which enables some students to continue their creative work in art schools after graduation. One of its most important functions is the excellent work accomplished for the Yearbook. Humorous sketches capture the flavor of the lighter mood at Technical High. MR. COVENEY CHECKS ENGLISH NOTEBOOKS iy ee 3 A ama aah The ARTISAN is now in its fifty-sixth year of publi- cation. It is published three times a year and contains a wide variety of literary accomplishment. Poetry, short stories, essays, cartoons, sports stories, and gen- eral information are to be found within this prize- winning magazine. With eye-catching covers designed by members of the Art Staff under Mr. Rosenthal, the ARTISAN is a member of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Mr. Thomas Wall, whose expert supervision as literary advisor brought recognition from many sources, was promoted to Chairman of the English Department at Boston Trade School. This year’s staff has demonstrated much energy and ability, a factor making the ARTISAN one of the finest school magazines in the country. Mr. Kahn, Musical Director, has trained his young musicians to perform like professionals. At Assemblies the blare of trumpets, the roll of drums, together with brass and woodwinds are combined in a musical pageant to the delight of students and faculty alike. In addition, there are several virtuosi who provide the spark and vitality of this highly entertaining group. It is, unquestionably, one of the finest of all High School Bands in the city. MR. COLLINS POINTS OUT USES OF THE SLIDE RULE Cod The CAMERA CLUB is one of the most useful and productive groups in the school. Members of this very active club are to be seen at all major school functions where the flash of bulbs signify the permanent record- ing of key events in the life of the school. Under the professional leadership of Mr. Mulloy and Mr. Burns, the eager shutter bugs are introduced to the most modern techniques of taking pictures and of develop- ing prints. Also, club members sometimes bring their _own pictures and photographs in order to discuss their respective merits. The CAMERA CLUB, in addition, maintains a valuable file of pictures taken over the years. Gita Club Third Row: Taylor, Springer, Kesner, Polo, Robinson, Wadja. TR alll 1 ; i) ee ee One of the most unusual, yet highly skilled groups at Technical High is the CERAMICS AND POTTERY CLUB. Under the artistic supervision of Mr. Ralph Rosenthal, this activity has become one of the most popular in the school. In this club members gain éx- perience and are introduced to new art forms in the creation of mosaics and ceramic sculpture. Moreover, members are instructed in the secrets of moulding clay and the making of glaze. The skills acquired in this club often become the means whereby students go on to become successful skilled artisans in fields that are becoming increasingly popular. The CHESS CLUB, led by Mr. Gordon, carries the honor of the school into the field of the “Game of Kings.” Having many talented members, the team has become one of the best in the city. They have defeated many nearby schoolboy clubs, a factor attesting to their remarkable skill. It is one of the oldest clubs in the school and requires a great deal of concentration and an analytical mind. Some of the more prominent members during the past year were Warren Green, Richard Quinn, and Guitaris Karosas. Next year the team hopes to capitalize upon several budding cham- pions and, as a result, will continue to maintain its superior standing in schoolboy competition. USING A TURRET LATHE REQUIRES CONCENTRATION i One of the most firmly established tradit ions at the school is Class Day, an event designed to promote friendlier feeling among seniors and time for all to reminisce on the tears and smiles of the years at Tech- nical High. Guided by the light touch of Mr. Murray, seniors congregate in the Hall in the morning where jolly banter takes place. This is followed by a delicious dinner and convivial outing in a suburban area de- signed to reflect the gayety of the entire class. This genial event marks the last collective affair for the seniors. All in all, Class Day marks the most informal and delightful of all the days of the school year. 2 P.M. — THE END OF THE SCHOOL DAY! GES; Day (aw ite Second Row: Goverman, Samson, Drootin. One of the smoothest functioning activities in the school is the highly efficient CORRIDOR PATROL under the very competent direction of Mr. Brokvist. Special praise must be given to this group of boys since they give up their free time during lunch pericds in order to supervise the corridors throughout our very extensive building. With a seriousness of purpose they make sure that no unauthorized people are al- lowed to wander about the building. Should any visi- tors arrive, they are referred to the office with des- patch. The honest and sincere dedication of these boys is typical of the wonderful spirit shown at Technical High. GOOD FOOD AND LIVELY CONVERSATION AT NOON TIME! % In 1948 the DRAFTING STANDARDS CLUB was formed in order to acquaint students with drafting techniques that go beyond the range of the high school curriculum. In addition, the club gathers together the numerous techniques of drafting which become a valuable supplement to the drafting courses. Under the skillful direction of Mr. Carpenito many of our alumni go on to become draftsmen, technicians, and engineers. Students learn the complex nature of form, proportion, and structural relationships while diligent- ly exploring new ways in which drafting may be re- lated to the modern world. Needless to say, DRAFT- ING STANDARDS is one of the most popular activi- ties in the school. ‘ . Drafting Sede Third Row: Dingwell, Peluso, Bertolino. The dazzling, intricate maneuvers of the TRICK DRILL TEAM can be seen at major assemblies and in practice sessions before and after school. Under the very competent direction of Mr. John O’Bryant, a former military drill instructor, the Team also serves as Honor Guard to visiting celebrities, and as colorful ushers at Home and School Association meetings. At various times demonstrations are held at the Armory and at the Boston Garden. Enlistment is voluntary and students spend many of their free hours perfecting the precision-like techniques that have made them so famous. Drilled intensively, they would bring pride and joy to all military officers. With an ever-increasing number of motor vehicles on our highways, it is evident that the PRE-DRIVING CLUB is of the utmost importance. Under the leader- ship of Mr. Gable, Mr. Mistler, and Mr. Broderick, many members of the student body learn about the technical nature of the automobile as well as such essentials of good driving as courtesy, rules of the road, and the importance of proper attitude while driving. This background information, though theo- retical, proves invaluable for students who hope to acquire a driver's license. Above all each member learns that safety pays and that a trained driver is a good driver. MOLALLA PTET Third Row: Kodinski, Jones, Biagi, Fagan, Ufland, Rovner, Tarushka, Bain. During the academic year four FORUMS are held under the expert guidance of Mr. Edward Golden of the English Department. Some of the more significant topics discussed in the Assembly Hall were “Radio- active Fallout in the Western Hemisphere,” “Federal Aid to Education,” and “The United States and the European Common Market.” These FORUMS provide valuable oratorical experience for the students and, in addition, provide the student body with extensive information on key issues of national importance. Moreover, this training in Public Speaking takes on even deeper meaning in these days when radio and TV plays a larger part in our daily lives than ever before. DRAFTING IS A HIGHLY SKILLED OCCUPATION ? bes = g € The GLEE CLUB with its golden-throated warblers of song, fills the Assembly Hall with interest and de- light whenever the student body and the faculty is fortunate enough to hear them. At Christmas time, during the Easter season, and on other special occa- sions, the voices of the GLEE CLUB reverberate throughout the school. Directed by the dynamic Mr. Shapiro, this group never fails to bring great joy to its audiences. In addition to ensemble singing, the boys are encouraged to develop solo techniques. Especially pleasing to audiences during the past year were vocal selections which were marked by a wide degree of variety. And the versatility of the “junior chrooners” was equal to the task! On the Friday after Thanksgiving Day the Main Ballroom of New England Mutual Hall was the scene of our annual Buff and Blue Harvest Dance. The gala event was fun-packed and enormously successful. We were fortunate in having the ever popular Bernie King Orchestra. Refreshments were served throughout the course of the evening and the ballroom was tastefully bedecked in autumnal decor. Credit for the success of the affair goes to the committee and to Mr. Holland who was instrumental in making the evening a delight. Faculty members were especially pleased by the re- laxed informality and graciousness of the boys who, with their lovely dates, were pictures of happiness. MR. VAN HAM DOUBLE CHECKS EVERY DETAIL The efficient, well organized LIBRARY under the direction of Mrs. Cogghill, and a conscientious crew of young scholars make the LIBRARY a place of quiet seriousness. Here the quest for knowledge is well facilitated by the excellent quality of books and pe- riodicals available to all who wish to take advantage of them. One is free to browse through the orderly- kept books during leisure time. Some of the more interesting works available are a complete set of American Heritage, a cumulative collection of our Technical High Yearbooks, and several new scientific volumes that are rapidly coming into heavy demand. Hundreds of other works are very popular, as the LIBRARY continues to be the very heart of the school. : 4 ea re etal Library Staff Second Row: Turner, Rose, Accardi. The enormity of the problem of maintaining an orderly, efficient lunchroom is reduced to a minimum by the precision-like techniques of Mr. Packard and his energetic assistants. The PATROL boys voluntarily give up free time in order to dedicate themselves to the demanding task of seeing that peace and harmony prevail throughout the lunchroom. These boys operate the cash registers, assist in serving food, and help the cafeteria staff whenever and wherever possible. Though the LUNCH PATROL is relatively new, its services have become indispensable, and gratitude is expressed by all who are able to enjoy a pleasant lunch due to the remarkable efficiency of these highly com- petent students. Much credit also goes to Mr. Foulkes and Mr. Grant in their supervisory positions. mA RR 0 oa, One of the newer additions to the list of activities at Technical High, and one of the most intellectual, is the MATHEMATICS CLUB. Headed by Mr. Roger Connor, also an instructor at Northeastern Univer- sity, the group concerns itself with the subtleties of higher mathematics. Its primary purpose is to stimu- late and advance an appreciation and understanding of mathematics. Both practical and theoretical aspects of the subject are explored. Analyses of new problems appearing in learned journals, thinking in terms of symbols, and trips to M.I.T., Northeastern University; and the IBM Building in Copley Square are some of the activities pursued by members. The Club is an invaluable asset for College Board preparation and for students who plan to become mathematicians and statisticians. Munnick, the MODEL SAILBOATS AND AIR- PLANES CLUB manifests a truly creative air. Here members are guided in the intricate ways of planning, cutting, shaping, finishing and assembling the parts of model boats and planes. Above all the models are not mere showpieces! They actually operate in a truly functional manner according to the specifications of the builder. Each model shows how carefully and delicately the hand of the artisan has guided his or- iginal idea of a model into a workable, eye-pleasing product. Each year boys of this fine club achieve fame in local-contests, as well as in national competition. MR. LAQUIDARA TEACHES THE FINER POINTS OF PRINTING The MUSIC APPRECIATION CLUB endeavors to bring listening enjoyment and understanding to the students who have selected this club for an activity. They do not restrict their sources to any one form of music but try to engulf the complete concept of this form of expression. One of the most entertaining fea- tures of the club is the discussion which occurs after a selection has been heard. Most of the members relate verbally the mood that the composer tried to create and the effect that this mood has made upon them. In the future, music of the Near and Far East as well as Africa will be listened to and discussed. It is the hope of the group that many more students will at- tempt to understand the only universal means of communication. This group represents the intellectual elite of the school. These students are chosen on the basis of scholastic excellence, character and school spirit. Each year a small number are selected and inducted into the local chapter of this nationwide group. Under the able guidance of Mr. Carey, they become a source of pride for the school, the community, and their families. Very often they receive the highest scholar- ships to the finest colleges and universities in the country. MODELS HELP STUDENTS TO VISUALIZE The ORCHESTRA of Technical High, consisting of the most talented musicians in the school, is, beyond doubt, one of the most entertaining in the city. Under the expert baton of Mr. Kahn, members are taught the refinements of counterpoint, introduced to polyphonic themes, and disciplined in the ways of contrapuntal harmony. Their repertoire is extensive, ranging from the most delightful popular tunes to the more serious, complex works of the masters. Along with the OR- CHESTRA itself, a “combo” of some five members was formed, much to the joy of those who heard this talented group at assemblies during the past year. Some members are professionals in their own right, playing in local groups whenever time permits. Each year the ORCHESTRA has given several players to the Boston School Symphony Orchestra. The first duly elected officers included Fran- cis Kiley, President, John Milone, Vice-President, Charles Gonsalves, Secretary, and Francis Groezinger, Treasurer. The primary objective of the club is to stimulate student interest in electronics, and to pro- vide opportunity to obtain the coveted radio amateur license. Within the first few months of operation, sev- eral students took the required examinations and gained their station licenses. At present the club oper- ates on both 6 and 2 meters (amateur bands) under the station call of K, I P F portable one, Bostan, Mass.; both radiophone, and radio telegraph are used. Equip- ment is gradually being acquired, and with the ap- proval of the recently formulated by-laws, it is ex- pected that the F.C.C. will grant Technical High a permanent license. MR. MUNNICK EXPLAINS THE USE OF A COMPLEX TOOL | : LI 4 4 : q es One of the fastest growing, most intriguing groups in the school is the SCIENCE CLUB. Directed by Mr. Lamkin, members are encouraged to search for sci- entific ideas which are applicable to everyday life. The results are exhibits, the best of which are en- tered in the School Science Fair held each spring at Boston Latin School. Others are also selected for entrance in the State Science Fair held at M.I.T. Each year several top awards go to members of the Club after results of the fairs are announced. Much time is spent after school by the students in the preparation of these excellent exhibits. Respon- sible for the orderly filing of students between classes, these boys carry out a difficult and oftentimes de- m: anding task exceedingly well. They are directed by the firm leadership of Mr. Thomas Moran who has reduced the complexities of security to a minimum. Members voluntarily give up their study periods and are established at str ategic places throughout the vast corridors to see that order is friatataineel at all times. Students are chosen on the basis of scholastic superi- ority and high character. Recently they have taken on the task of helping office personnel supervise and administer our new public address system. fe A difficult and seemingly never-ending chore is the work of the energetic SENIOR CLASS AGENTS. Supervised by Miss Cummings, they are responsible for coHecting and recording all payments made to- wards the Yearbook. Diligently and steadfastly they never relented in seeking out all delinquent accounts in order that the Yearbook would become a financial success. They gave of themselves in tireless fashion, and when huge obstacles confronted them they were equal to the task. Much praise, therefore, goes to these students who achieved an enviable record by having every member of the senior class subscribe to our Yearbook. OUR CLASS OFFICERS ARE EXAMPLES OF EXCELLENT LEADERSHIP QUALITIES Except for graduation the Senior Prom is the most outstanding event of the academic year. It is an occa- sion which no senior easily forgets. Snappily attired in their formal white evening jackets, the seniors are second in appeal only to their lovely dates arrayed in gorgeous pastel gowns. But without the unstinting labor of the SENIOR PROM COMMITTEE the grand evening would be less than a success. For it is these students who must hire an orchestra, print a dance schedule, sell tickets, and arrange for souvenirs. Mr. Murray, special adviser to the Senior Class, over- sees all details and helps immeasurably in bringing about a smoothly functioning group. Among the more mechanically adept graduates of Technical High are the SHOP ASSISTANTS. These students provide invaluable service in the numerous shops of the school. They are chosen on the basis of character, ability, and cooperation. From time to time they act as instructors in their respective de- partments while the subject teacher is occupied with pressing administrative demands. They are looked up to by the students and praised by all members of the faculty. These assistants often matriculate at technical schools throughout the country after spend- ing a most profitable year in the shops. THE PRESSES ARE CONSTANTLY ROLLING IN THE PRINTING DEPARTMENT Probably the oldest activity at Technical High is the STUDENT COUNCIL which was organized in 1911. Students meet from time to time during the year in order to discuss problems which arise, and under the leadership of Mr. Carey these problems are dis- cussed so that solutions may be found. Each home room sends one member to the Council. In addition, class presidents, executive editors of the Artisan and the Technician, a representative of the musical or- ganizations, and chairmen of the numerous student organizations are members. In order to guarantee a truly democratic organization, Mr. Carey makes sure that parliamentary procedure is followed. Loyalty and Service to the school is the slogan of the Council. Almont Field replaced Cleveland Circle as the new home stadium, and most of the starting team of the 1960 season had graduated. For the CAPTAIN most part the team consisted of relatively inexperienced sophomores and WILLIAM ALLEN juniors. Through sheer determination and hard work the squad made an excellent showing against the expected powerful opposition of the Boston City League. Bill McGillvray, Captain of the Technicians, and Bill Allen, Captain- Elect for the coming season, were voted to the All-Boston Conference Team by the in-town coaches. Other players who sparkled throughout the season were Arthur Cassela and Errol Saunders, the slick-fielding double play combination; Al Pucino, hard hitting third baseman; Jack Dever, slugging outfielder; and speedy centerfielder Joe Cunio. Backing up Bill McGillvray, the workhorse of the pitching staff, were John Dean, Frank Smith, and Clayton Martin. Talented Bill McGillvray signed a professional baseball contract with the 1960 world champion Pittsburgh Pirates shortly after graduation. Bill was assigned to Kingsport, Tennessee in the Appalachian League where he turned in an impressive pitching and batting record. If Coach Keane can come up with some top flight pitching, a swift out- fielder, and some powerful hitting to add to the present squad, the Tech- nicians could have a very pleasant, successful spring. 50 MARA a mae At wane ‘ame Third Row: Magewood, Smith, Voloshen, Walsh, Jones, Bagdonas, Lake, Gramer, Revillioty. The weather was beau- tifully New England all the way, and the men of Tech performed ELECTRO-PLATING IS A according to their usual high standards. English High, sorry to state, won FASCINATING PHASE OF the title, but it was hard pressed by Tech’s Tigers. In fact, an abbreviated SCIENCE. season may be the reason that the Tigers fell a bit short in points. As the season went along, the Tech crew showed great improvement. The boys felt sure that, given another week of racing as originally planned, they would have overtaken the Blue and Blue from English. Prospects for crew in the spring were very good. A large number of returnees gave the coach something to work with. Led by coxswain Robert O'Brien, III-Z, the men of Tech made an excellent showing. 51 Third Row: Cicola, Laskey, Ouelette, Willis, Darby, Ptrang, Doherty, Rodriges, Presente, Pucino, Fitzge rald, Farmer, Johnson, Kerins. This year will go down in the records of Tech foot- ball as one of our most successful seasons. Coach Tom Moran promised us before the season started that 1961 would be a good year, but results exceeded his expectations. A crop of good veterans reported in September, and some good prospects from the junior varsity gave hope for the future. We got under way on September 22. JAMBOREE The Blue and White began the campaign on a happy note by trimming Brighton High School at White Stadium. Ours was only one of four games on that day but it was the best. Brighton was the bigger team, but Tech’s Tigers had more finesse and speed. Tommie Montgomery, IV-W; Willie Cater, IV-C; and George Harden, III-U, scored the touchdowns. Joe Presente, III-S, was denied a score following a 60 yard romp when one of his teammates was caught clipping. There was room for improvement in Tech’s defense. Practice should cure whatever ills we have in this department. Final score: Tech 20-Brighton 0. TECH—ENGLISH HIGH A young, spirited E.H.S. team got off to an early start and caught our squad by surprise. By the time the Tech Tigers woke up to what was going on the score was too great to be overcome. Fumbles occurred like leaves falling from trees. We lost the ball no less than seven times, and the Blue and Blue, ever alert, recovered each time. Our failure to rush the E.H.S. passer proved disastrous, as our defensive secondary was made to look like Swiss cheese. The fourth period came three periods too late. Bill Allen, IV-U, spotted John Osgood, IV-Y, in the open and shot a quick pass into his arms for a touchdown. It was a case of too little too late. Final score: E.H.S. 36-Tech 6. TECGH=B;. CGC. HIGH The Tigers bounced back from the English defeat by scoring almost at will against an inexperienced flock of Eaglets at White Stadium. Again our defense left much to be desired, but the fast running of Tech’s backs and the fine passing of Bill Allen were too much for B.C. High. Tommie Montgomery scored three touchdowns on two 30-yard runs and 73-yard run. Joe Cunio, IV-U, raced 60 yards with a Bill Allen pass for the other tally. Joe Presente accounted for the extra points. Final score: Tech 28-B.C.H. 22. FOOTBALL—OFFENSE DH GH=GATIN The Terrors from Latin School fell before a well- oiled team of Tech Tigers as Tommie Montgomery scored twice and Bruce Van Allen, II-Y, registered once. Willie Cater, Bill Allen, and Tommie Montgom- ery raced for the extra points. Tech, now 2 and 1 in the City League, showed a much improved defense in this game. Latin threatened twice but each time the onslaught was turned back. Final score: Tech 24-Latin 0. TECH—DORCHESTER Our third win in four starts came against Dorchester High. Swift backs and stalwart defenders gave the Tigers a well-earned victory. Willie Cater, Tommie Montgomery, and Dennis Finn, II-S, tallied in sepa- rate periods, while Montgomery rushed for extra points. With each game Tech’s defense improved and this time it was strong enough to secure a shutout. Final score: Tech 20-Dorchester 0. TECH—EAST BOSTON The Noddle Islanders were swamped at White Stadium on October 27 as the Tiger offense ran rough- shod over an outmanned E. B. team. This was our third shutout of the season. A large crowd was on hand to watch Tommie Montgomery score five times against a confused opponent. The tide was too much for the islanders and, in spite of Coach Moran’s efforts to con- tain the score, no less than seven touchdowns were scored. Final score: Tech 42-East Boston 0. TECH—RINDGE TECH The Technical Tigers left town for a visit to Cam- bridge on November 4. Rindge Tech supplied the opposition and came very close to tying knots in our tail. With only seconds remaining, fleet Tommie Mont- gomery rescued the Blue and White from defeat by snatching an Allen pass and racing 35 yards for the winning margin. It was a thriller all the way. Willie Cater slanted off tackle for a 20 yard romp early in the fourth period to keep the Tigers in the battle, but it was Montgomery's sprint with 35 seconds left on the clock that won the game. An earlier safety gave Tech the margin of victory. Final score: Tech 16-Rindge 14. TECH—JAMAICA PLAIN A sixth win in seven starts came at the expense of Jamaica Plain. Every attempt to keep the score down failed as the Tigers ran over an outclassed opponent. Tommie Montgomery was high scorer again as he ran for one touchdown and converted five times. Final score: Tech 54-Jamaica Plain 0. FOOTBALL—DEFENSE Second Row: Pucino, Cater, VanAllen, Allen, Montgomery, Second Row: Harden, Hennessey, DeVoe, Allen, Montgomery, Presente. McDonough. Gymnasium The “new” Boston Technical is singularly fortunate in being blessed with two gymnasiums. One gym is used for large group instruction while the other is used for track workouts, individual calisthenics, among other things. Both gyms are usually marked by energetic individual and collective activities during the course of the school day and, more often than not, during after school hours. Mr. Grant and Mr. Donato, a former major league baseball player, conduct efficient, well- organized programs in order to suit the needs and tastes of all students at Technical. Every student in the school is obliged to participate in the gymnasium program, unless excused by higher authority for valid medical reasons. Each boy has his own gym uniform consisting of sneakers, blue shorts, and white jersey. Every group must perform a given set of calisthenics under the direction of Coaches Grant and Donato before participating in volleyball, basketball or track. In this way all unnecessary sprains and muscle spasms are avoided during intra-mural competition. The carefully planned gymnasium activities are in line with the President’s Program of National Physical Fitness. Bashethall The highlight of the past season for the hard-driving Techni- cians was the double win over Boston Latin. From the beginning the season looked promising for the Blue and Gold, especially after the first practice session. Among the returning seniors were Captain John Osgood, a three year starter; Errol Saunders, Gene Hennessey, and Roy Dennehey; Juniors Chuck Shelton, Dan Beals, Ken Cunningham and Barry Fisch. Under the expert tutelage of Coach Grant the squad lived up to all expectations as a winning season was added to the roster of ever-increasing ath- letic victories. The most memorable game of the year was Tech’s second en- counter with Boston Latin. When the final tally was registered, Tech was in the vanguard with a 63-42 victory. Losing at half- time, 30-28, a spirited Tech team, led by Captain John Osgood, proved far too superior for the “Purple Terrors” in the second half. “Big John’s” 27 points submerged Latin as he displayed amazing accuracy in his shooting. And so one of the best games as well as one of the best seasons was chalked up by the Technicians. 58 CAPTAINS—BILL ALLEN AND JOHN OSGOOD. Hunior Varsity [xe tbl The JV Team is made up of talented Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors who usually become the key members of the varsity squad. This year the JV’s got off to a slow start but finished in strong fashion, winning six of their last seven starts. After the starting five was settled the team got down to brass tacks. Out- standing were Guards Kevin Callahan and Tom Kerins, Center Dave Jassie, and Forwards Charlie Winston and James Amirsakis. The team was inspired by a spirited and talented Freshman who came through more than once in tight situations, Bill Rahilly. Evidence of this testimony is the fact that Technical’s harriers went undefeated in Boston Competition for the second straight year, again winning the coveted Regimental Championship. Led by their determined captain, Paul Showstead, and sparked by the magnificent running of Mike Dunn, the team picked up much strength in the final stretches of the season. Balance was provided by the combined efforts of such determined seniors as William Olsen, Gatturna, Brooks, and a staunch old reliable, Jim Stembridge. Other veterans who showed remarkable im- provement were Meagher, Devine, Robertson, Burnham, Mur- phey, and Britton. Voted as the outstanding freshman during the past year was George Runfner. In addition the team was unanimous in select- ing Mike Dunn as its captain for 1962. Coach Carey hopes that 1962 will be as successful as the past year and looks forward to many more new prospects. 61 (Eee Country TRACK CO-CAPTAINS PAUL SHOW- STEAD AND LEROY ROGERS. a 3 a ONAL A AONE DRISCOLL AND WALSH GIVE IT ROSS AND WALSH FEND OFF A THE OLD TECH EFFORT. Coach Victor Campbell and his squad were picked around town as the team to skate away with the trophy. There was good reason for this feeling, but the squad wanted no part of it. Hochey As a group it wanted to feel that every game was a champion- ship contest, and with that attitude the trophy was tucked away at the close of the season. Perhaps no coach in the Boston Public School system spends more time coaching a squad than Mr. Campbell. Over the years he has always given freely of his spare time to help boys who show some measure of promise, this over and above the time allotted officially to the sport concerned. He has been richly rewarded by the devotion and respect his players have for him. This year he enjoyed a double reward. We wish him and _ his players good luck in the future. A strong group of veterans led by Co-Captains Tom Berkeley, IV-U, and Tom Ross, IV-V, made up the core around which a potent sextet was assembled. Tom Ross was perhaps one of the best defensemen in the metropolitan area, and he was assisted by Pat Driscoll, HI-T, a converted right winger. Pat played so well as a sophomore that he made the first line. This year with Tom Ross, he was half of the best defense in schoolboy hockey. Skating on the first line and leading a group of sharpshooters was Tom Berkeley, the league's leading scorer in 1960-61. Tom was bigger, stronger, and wiser and was a great success. Gerry Geary, III-B, scorer of the winning goal against Latin last year, and Bob England, III-E, helped carry the heavy duty again. They were strong skaters good enough to crash into the lineup as sophomores. Joe McKinnon, II-D, one of the last season’s promising fresh- men was on hand to give help when needed. He saw plenty of action. Doing duty in the twine was Ed Walsh, IV-D. Ed was fully recovered from a football injury and was eager to go. With an all-star cast in front of him his job was not too rough. Up from Mr. Campbell’s farm system came the following good prospects Bob Berkeley (Tom’s brother), II-X; Ed Flaherty, II-B; Peter Fleming, II-X; John Malloy, IV-C; and Mike Shanley, II-E. These boys played much hockey together on the junior varsity and fitted into the scheme very well.
