th Wikaorian SOE ena “Of the day and the hour no man knoweth, no, not the angels of heaven, but the Father alone.” These fateful words taken from the Gospel of St. Matthew were brought home to us by the sudden death during the school year of Mr. William H. Powers. He had taught in Boston Technical High for the past seventeen years and was part of the spirit and tradition of the school. Known to many generations of students and alumni his untimely death is regretted by all. Mr. Powers was an able and versatile member of the Drafting Department. He came to us in September 1943 and immediately became a valuable asset. In addition to his teaching duties Mr. Powers for fifteen years coached the Varsity basketball team, and also the Junior Varsity baseball team. He even found time to be Business Manager of the ARTISAN. He had become coach of the Varsity Baseball team just last year. An outstanding golfer, always interested in sports, he took a great interest in Boys’ Clubs, CYO activities, and summer camps. He gained his high school education at our school, then called Mechanic Arts High, receiving his diploma in 1918. He graduated from the Lowell Institute (M.I.T.) in 1922 and from The Training School for Mechanic Arts in 1923. Before coming to Boston Technical he had taught at the Quincy School, the Hugh O'Brien School, and the Lewis Junior High. He continued his studies at Boston Callege and received in 1937 a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. He later was granted in 1941 a Master of Education Degree from Boston Teachers College. Mr. Powers was interested in civic affairs. He was active in Settlement House work in the South End. He started the CYO in the Cathedral Parish and aided in the development of similar youth organizations. He was a leader in the Com- munity Fund of Watertown. For many years a familiar figure in the classrooms and the corridors of our school, Mr. Powers will be missed but not forgotten by the boys of Boston Technical High.

W. possess all through our pri One of the most valuable truths revealed by careful experi- ments conducted by modern scientists in the field of psycho- logical research is that the ability to learn quickly and to retain what is learnt is by no means confined solely to the period of youth. We possess all through our lives the capacity for master- ing new knowledge and new skills provided that we are willing to discipline ourselves, conquer whims, and put forth in a de- termined manner real effort. Plan carefully, therefore, and seek the very best advice from expert counselors about a future career. Choose, then, a life work that will interest you so much that you will not mind the endless hours of study and work required to attain proficiency. “Heights by great men reached and kept Were not attained by sudden flight But they while their companions slept Were toiling upward in the night.” Your Headmaster Everett J.
