MW SS ae i 1 le a a 2 he tal he | 7 k = Techuucanm The 196] We have reached a milestone in our lives, and, for a great many of us, the parting of the way. But, bitter or sweet, the memories of four years at Boston Technical High will stay with us for a lifetime, and the knowledge we have gained will be a stepping stone to all future things. We, of The Technician, hope you enjoy your 1961 Yearbook for we have put in to it a year of hard work and devotion. We have been most fortunate that the very able Mr. Patrick F. O’Connor has so competently taken over where the belovetl Dr. Hasenfus left off. May God grant us peace on this earth and an under- standing of our fellow man from this day forth. MICHAEL S. WEINER Editor-in-Chief W. ete Pry fer! 4 milestone th Wikaorian SOE ena “Of the day and the hour no man knoweth, no, not the angels of heaven, but the Father alone.” These fateful words taken from the Gospel of St. Matthew were brought home to us by the sudden death during the school year of Mr. William H. Powers. He had taught in Boston Technical High for the past seventeen years and was part of the spirit and tradition of the school. Known to many generations of students and alumni his untimely death is regretted by all. Mr. Powers was an able and versatile member of the Drafting Department. He came to us in September 1943 and immediately became a valuable asset. In addition to his teaching duties Mr. Powers for fifteen years coached the Varsity basketball team, and also the Junior Varsity baseball team. He even found time to be Business Manager of the ARTISAN. He had become coach of the Varsity Baseball team just last year. An outstanding golfer, always interested in sports, he took a great interest in Boys’ Clubs, CYO activities, and summer camps. He gained his high school education at our school, then called Mechanic Arts High, receiving his diploma in 1918. He graduated from the Lowell Institute (M.I.T.) in 1922 and from The Training School for Mechanic Arts in 1923. Before coming to Boston Technical he had taught at the Quincy School, the Hugh O'Brien School, and the Lewis Junior High. He continued his studies at Boston Callege and received in 1937 a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. He later was granted in 1941 a Master of Education Degree from Boston Teachers College. Mr. Powers was interested in civic affairs. He was active in Settlement House work in the South End. He started the CYO in the Cathedral Parish and aided in the development of similar youth organizations. He was a leader in the Com- munity Fund of Watertown. For many years a familiar figure in the classrooms and the corridors of our school, Mr. Powers will be missed but not forgotten by the boys of Boston Technical High. yy held fo... his pro eS5510Nn... Conway W. possess all through our pri One of the most valuable truths revealed by careful experi- ments conducted by modern scientists in the field of psycho- logical research is that the ability to learn quickly and to retain what is learnt is by no means confined solely to the period of youth. We possess all through our lives the capacity for master- ing new knowledge and new skills provided that we are willing to discipline ourselves, conquer whims, and put forth in a de- termined manner real effort. Plan carefully, therefore, and seek the very best advice from expert counselors about a future career. Choose, then, a life work that will interest you so much that you will not mind the endless hours of study and work required to attain proficiency. “Heights by great men reached and kept Were not attained by sudden flight But they while their companions slept Were toiling upward in the night.” Your Headmaster Everett J. Hasenfus was born in Newton, Mass. on January 9, 1900. He attended the Newton Public Schools. He gained his high school education at Boston College High School. He graduated from Boston College in 1922 re- ceiving a Bachelor of Arts degree, and in 1923 acquired a Master of Education degree. He culminated years of study and research by earning the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1931. Long before gaining the title of Doctor, he had joined the faculty of Boston English High School as a teacher of English. After serving there for seventeen years, Dr. Hasenfus, in June of 1940, succeeded Charles Lane Hanson as Head of the English Department at our school. Until October of 1960, when he retired to assume a new position as Dean of Studies at Chamberlayne Junior College, he was most highly esteemed by faculty and students. Dr. Hasenfus has been most active in Community affairs. He has been the President of the Boston College High School Alumni Assn., President of the Boston College Club of West Roxbury, Historian of the West Roxbury Historical Association, and Adjutant of West Roxbury Post No. 167, American Legion. He was the Vice-President of the Stratford School and of the Chamberlayne Junior College. He has also been active in writing. He has been a special writer for the Denver Register, the Boston American, and the Boston Globe. He has published four books: Athletics at Boston College, We Summer in Maine, More Vacation Days in Maine, and Marie Visits the Zoo. Never idle, he is now working on another book on athletics. Dr. Hasenfus has a large family consisting of five sons, two daughters, and, now, nine grandchildren. We, the Seniors of Boston Technical High, are proud to bestow the highest honor in our power on this sincere and faithful teacher. We are happy to dedicate this Technician to the estimable gentleman whom we remember as a man of high ideals and gracious manners. 66 99 God ery: us, UCT OILS eee The Class of 1961 has conferred upon me a great honor when it has selected me as the Dedicatee of this year’s Technician. My special thanks, therefore, to the Class of 1961 and to the members of the “Technician” staff. I recall my twenty years at Technical High School as among the happiest and most productive of my life. The greatest joy that teachers can carry away with them after a lifetime of service is the loyalty of their fellow-workers and their pupils. Both faculty and students have been loyal to me. Thousands of men who have been in my classes from the day that I first entered the classrooms of English High in long-ago 1923 until I left the portals of Technical High in October, 1960, remain among my most cherished friends. It was not easy for me personally to make a decision that would take me from among you, but the sadness of farewell was in part mitigated by the spirit of good will and friendliness evinced by both faculty and students. May you always feel free to visit me at my new address and to bring to me your problems as you did so often at Technical High. I shall have time for you whenever you need me. I shall be as loyal to you as you have been to me. To you young men of 1961, almost all of whom I have kiwwn well, I offer my most heartfelt congratulations on this, your graduation year. May you be success- ful in your future, in college, in the armed services, in your future technical and professional lives. Determined effort will ensure success. Remain loyal alumni, and work that future generations will enjoy the same facilities at Technical High that you have enjoyed. Thank you for dedicating this “Technician” to me, and in the words of Tiny Tim, “God bless us, every one.” Sincerely yours, Dr. Nathaniel J. The Art Club is composed of boys who have artistic ability and who are interested in the finer things of life. Under the direction of Mr. Rosenthal these boys produce works of art. They think in terms of tech- nique, of the relationship of details to the whole design, and create colorful paintings and ornaments. In an atmosphere of accomplishment, in their gaily decorated workshop, they turn out illustrations for the school magazine, scenes for school assemblies, posters for school and city charitable appeals, water colors for contests, and decorations that make our school bright and pleasant. The gifted student is challenged to develop his talent. All members receive a thorough knowledge of the harmony of colors and are given an opportunity to reveal their skill, taste, and power in creating beautiful objects. Mr. Grueter has been teaching English forty-five years Our school magazine the ARTISAN is published three times a year. Now in its fifty-fifth year it is better than ever. It combines journalism and literature, for within its covers one finds essays and short stories, humorous cartoons and drawings, summaries of sports and games, and general information useful to our students. A consistent winner of a First Prize from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, the ARTISAN is now most capably guided by Mr. Thomas Wall. Mr. Rosenthal is the art adviser. Mr. Resnick, our former adviser, was promoted to Head of the Depart- ment of English at Boston Latin School. This year’s staff of school editors, ably led by Richard Rudman as chief editor, has shown a high degree of versatility and of creative achievement. Few school magazines attain such a happy balance of serious writing, hu- morous sketches, artistic illustrations, and useful knowledge as does the ARTISAN. bgp Third Row: Sykes, Biagi, Spence, Matthews, O’Hara, Wajda, Koslow. Working under difficulties because of the cessation of Military Drill, the members have shown great spirit and have kept alive the fine traditions of our school Band. Pep- py, lively, and colorful, they specialize in rhythmic melodies. Mr. Kahn, Music Director, has worked very hard to bring out the special musical talent of each boy. Mr. Carey is faculty adviser. Rehearsals have been well attended and the result has been apparent in a well trained unit. There is even a band within a band, a small combination that plays light popular music. To hear and see our band in action is a thrilling sight. The blare of trumpets, the ruffle of drums, and the resounding bugle calls answering the brass and the woodwinds would make anyone wake up and notice that our band is one of the best in Boston. Our regiment parades for the last time A very enthusiastic group of boys made up the Camera Club this year. The latest developments in the technique both of taking pictures and of develop- ing prints were closely studied and put into practice. The members could be seen at assemblies, sports C L f events, and all school gatherings, capturing on film amera u the highlights of any important event. The Camera Club gives encouragement and helpful publicity to many school endeavors. It also maintains a very useful and historical file of pictures taken over the years. Many events and personalities of Boston Technical High are recorded on film that otherwise might have been forgotten. Mr. Foley never lacks eager assistants The Ceramics and Pottery Club is almost unique to our school. Very few high schools have this unusual club. Here boys learn the secrets of molding clay and of making glaze. They create their own mosaics and their own ceramic sculpture. Practice is the best of all instruction. The members donate many hours both in and outside school to gain experience, train- ing, and finally craftsmanship in this artistic field. Mr. Rosenthal personally supervises all projects and en- courages everyone to develop pride in his work and to do the best job possible. Since the use of ceramics and pottery is both useful and ornamental, the wide possibilities for future use of the skill gained in this club is obvious. Many boys not only gain a good knowledge of fundamentals but become successful skilled craftsmen in a field that provides many oppor- tunities for future employment. Mr. Furber has organized a'very willing group of students who are especially interested in chemistry. Not content with the regular course of study, the members of the Chemistry Club pursue advanced topics usually studied in college. They meet twice a week to discuss the latest developments in this highly complex field. Sometimes the emphasis is upon the applications of scientific principles to modern life; sometimes the emphasis is upon the trends of pure research in the field of chemistry. At all events, each meeting is interesting and informative. Experiments may be performed and analyzed; articles in scientific periodicals read and debated; new discoveries ex- plained and shown how they affect man and civiliza- tion. With such a vital subject as chemistry the topics for each meeting are endless. Chemistry Club, Second Row: Hill, Christian, Hughes, Kline, Mr. Furber. One of the oldest clubs in the school, it provides an opportunity C I G [, f to learn the Game of Kings and an opportunity to e535 As practice against skilled players. The Chess Club has produced many fine players who have competed against the best of other high schools. Chess is a game of logic and concentration. Mr. Ricci supervises this group in their search for greater knowledge concerning aviation. G f Meteorology, navigation, engineering are discussed. tive Ai r P altro Practical topics, such as types of engines, their capa- bilities and their differences, or the different types and kinds of planes, are made the subject of group re- search. Front Row: Mr. Murray, Gray, Bramante, Ferguson, Hilchey, Carty, Williams. For many years the Class Day, under the direction of Mr. Murray, has been a memorable occasion. It provides a day for the Senior Class to meet as a group under friendly and informal circumstances. The morn- ing assembly in the Hall, for Seniors only, gives an outlet for mild joshing and jokes about faculty and students. The Class Will with its time honored jibes about faculty peculiarities, and the Class Prophecy with its horrible forebodings about the future of the Senior Class always provide a great deal of laughter and hilarity. Usually the afternoon is spent on a‘class outing in some quiet spot where seniors can relax after a good dinner and enjoy the company and friendship of fellow students. It is the last social affai r of the Senior Class before Graduation. Our class officers exemplify good citizenship at its best The Corridor Patrol is made up of a group of vol- unteers who perform an essential task in the smooth functioning of our school. These boys give up their free time during their lunch period to make sure that no unauthorized personnel, either strangers or stu- dents, are allowed to wander about our building. They see that there is no confusion or congestion during filing to and from the cafeteria. Visitors are greeted politely and escorted to the main office. The Corridor Patrol performs a real service in the efficient admin- istration of our new school with its lengthy, endless corridors and its five floors of classrooms, shops, and laboratories. Mr. Brokvist has efficiently organized this group so that no place of importance is left un- guarded. Under his direction there has developed a very fine spirit of cooperation between students and the officers of the patrol. ee i +i : } ) i Covel ty: otal Third Row: Kelly, Georgaqui, Santry, Condil, Wein- berg, Hall, Sanborn. It is composed of students who have distinguished themselves in writing original essays, short stories, or poems. The club members pursue two avenues in order to perfect their ability to write more effective English. They write regularly upon special topics usually emulating the style of a recognized author. They also read masterpieces of literature and study them intensively to find out the best methods to write convincingly. With the retirement of Dr. Hasenfus, Mr. O’Connor has taken over the guidance of this group. From this group usually come our contestants in city and state essay contests. The writers of this club do not aspire to write best sellers but to improve their powers of written expression so that they can continue in college or in later life a career in creative writing. Mr. Wall opens our minds to great poetry A newcomer to the school list of activities, the DISCUSSION GROUP has already made its place secure. Mr. Bowes, as faculty adviser to this serious group, has stimulated the members to think deeply about the problems confronting the United States as a democratic nation. The DISCUSSION GROUP aims Sp . as not at mere talk but at better understanding of our tSCUSSLON Gr ee neighbors, and of the world in which we live. It stresses necessity for accurate knowledge and disci- plined thinking. As citizens of tomorrow, the mem- bers of the club strive to become cooperative and re- sponsible citizens, to gain true appreciation of their American heritage, and to develop ability to think for themselves. Every student is the architect of his own fortune Established in 1948 the DRAFTING STANDARDS Club is designed for students desiring to learn more about drafting techniques than is possible within the limited classroom time. Under the leadership of Mr. Carpenito, many complex problems in drafting are explored and solved. Boys gain an exceptional skill in the ability to make clear, complete, and accurate drawings. They learn to think in three dimensions, and to understand form, proportion, and structural relationships. The extra training gained proves in- valuable for those students who intend to pursue drafting as a career, or who hope to make drafting a major study in a technical college. Perched on their high stools in their spacious workshop the members of the drafting standards are a very quiet hard- working group. They certainly have a true per- spective of things in general, and of life in particular. Third Row: T. Francis, Blaney, Turchinetz, Mendolia, Candora, Bussey, Couturier, Brown, Doyle, Cox, O’Brien. The DRIVER EDUCATION Club has expanded greatly this year so that three faculty advisers now cooperate in giving the information and instruction essential to this voluntary course. Mr. Mistler, Mr. Broderick, and Mr. Gable are the capable instructors. The class learns not only technical information but also desirable attitudes. The members concentrate on the rules of the road, courtesy, safe driving, and the importance of correct driving habits. They also learn the first principles of maintenance of an automobile. Membership in this club proves worthwhile when a student seeks his driving license. The theoretical training and the intensive background instruction re- ceived in the club has thoroughly prepared the stu- dent so that he passes his examination successfully. Under the guidance of Mr. Golden, four times a year, our spirited orators perform upon the stage of the Assembly Hall. The subjects included the Missile Gap Between the United States and Russia, Federal Aid to Education, the Space Age, and Socialized Medicine. The members of the Forum de- velop poise and self confidence through their ability to get up and speak in public. They help not only themselves but by their brilliant orations help the student body to understand the important issues of the day. Our young orators were always equal to the task and gained great applause for their intelligent and intellectual addresses. Mr. Gibbons makes clear the meaning of American democracy The Glee Club with its music and songs brings sun- shine and cheer to Boston Technical High. It enter- tains at special assemblies, particularly during the Christmas and Easter seasons. Mr. Shapiro is the Di- rector of Music, while Mr. O’Bryant is the Faculty Adviser. The meetin gs of the Glee Club are an agree- able mixture of work and play. Boys are encouraged to sing not only as a well-trained unit but to develop special talents for solo or small group work. A con- cert given by the Club is a revelation of the musical wealth in our school. The presentation of the better class of songs was the keynote of the Glee Club. Long practice and earnest cooperation combined to make the results outstanding. The various groups within the Club showed great ability and unusual harmony; the vocal trio, the quartette were always warmly received. Fully trained and expert, the Glee Club has taken its place as a valuable part of the school program. Glee Chul Second Row: Azar, Chin, Girard, P. The Harvest Dance was held in the New England Mutual Hall according to time honored custom on the Friday after Thanksgiving Day. It was once more very well attended. The gaily decorated ballroom fes- tooned with brightly colored leaves, ears of corn, and wreaths of ivy presented a very colorful appearance. The committee, under the direction of Mr. Murray, did an excellent job. The enchanting music combined with the even more enchanting feminine guests, made this informal annual dance a very glamorous evening. Faculty members present were highly complimentary of the beautiful setting and the smooth arrangements of the dance. It was a very enjoyable affair, friendly yet dignified. Mr. Keane makes French interesting for his scholars Our school library is a valuable aid in the eternal quest for knowledge. Open to all students for reading or research, the library welcomes everyone who wishes to learn. Mrs. Cogghill, the librarian, has ex- pertly gathered together books of all kinds: fiction, non-fiction, and reference books suitable for a techni- cal high school. She is available at all times for con- sultation on any problems of leisure reading, of sci- entific research, or of school assignments. Ably assist- ing her in the efficient operation of the library is a devoted band of helpers called the Library Staff. They help maintain the orderly arrangement of books so that volumes may be easily found. The Library Staff assists in the processing of new books, helps in the clerical work, and aids in the presentation of displays and exhibits that make the library interesting and attractive. Before the cafeteria opened A new era came to our school when the cafeteria was opened in January. Hot meals became a reality, and the old days of munching sandwiches in the class- rooms became a memory. The opening of the cafeteria with its modern kitchen equipment was welcomed eagerly by the student body. However, problem's arose in the orderly feeding of fifteen hundred hungry boys. The LUNCH PATROL provides the efficient helpers who operate the cash registers, assist in giving out food, and help the cafeteria staff in the function- ing of the cafeteria. They are a selected group of boys, above average in marks, who are responsible for the quick, excellent service that is a characteristic of our cafeteria. Mr. Packard is in general charge, ably as- sisted by Mr. Foulkes and Mr. Plumb. The lunch patrol though in existence only a short period has already become a very popular organization. The MATHEMATICS CLUB sponsored by Mr. Connor is designed for those students with a genuine interest in higher mathematics. The activities of the club include intensive study of advanced mathematics problems, with visits to outside centers of research such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the International Business Machines Building. Con- centration, persistence, and precision are virtues sought beyond mere results. The ability to think straight, to solve problems logically is constantly de- veloped. The calm analysis of data and the use of clear judgment in the solving of difficulties becomes second nature. This year the Mathematics Club, under the presidency of Leo Jarvis, has firmly established itself as an extra-curricular activity supplementing the regular instruction in the classroom, and also estab- lishing itself as an intellectual stimulus to higher achievement for those students who intend to special- ize in mathematics. Indeed, the spirit of the club could well be summed up as an infinite capacity for taking pains. The work of the club involves manual dexterity in the actual creation of working models, as well as the mental ability to plan on paper, according to scale, the desired model. There is great pride in craftsmanship in the members, and a very good spirit of honest rivalry. A very pleasant atmosphere pervades each meeting. The members learn to appreciate the talents of their fellow students and to realize that each one has his own special gifts. Woodworking teaches us manual dexterity Mr. Alf J. Munnick is the sponsor of the MODEL SAILBOATS AND AIRPLANES CLUB. The success- ful operation of this club owes:much to his genuine enthusiasm for the making of models. An expert craftsman he transmits his love of good workmanship to the eager members, who in turn create prize-win- ning examples. A visitor to the club can actually see useful, attractive, and functional models taking shape. To cut, shape, finish and assemble the intricate parts of sailboats and planes is painstaking work not to be finished quickly. Nothing is rushed for the finished product must be perfect. Then the models must work; they are not ornamental. They may be lovely in de- sign, and beautiful to look at, but the models must actually sail and fly. The boys gain an excellent knowledge of construction by making the parts and carefully assembling the entire model. Machine work requires wide technical knowledge Whdol Soden nad! Each one is an individual stylist ronestra but all in the tradition of music blend their talents to create beautiful melodies. The boys give generously of their time and their talents to render service to the school. This year’s group was unusually gifted. There was even an orchestra within the formal orchestra. This smaller group or combination, though small in numbers, made up for its lack of volume by its fine sweetness of tone and catchy rhythm. The young scientists work very hard, spending many long hours outside school perfecting their exhibits. The SECURITY PATROL is the only activity in the school that requires two pages in the Year Book. The large size of the group and the importance of its duties make it mandatory that sufficient space be given to this worthy organization. The great extent of our building with its long corridors and innumer- able classrooms would present many problems of traffic control without the efficient supervision of the members of the Security Patrol. Lately, with the in- stallation of a modern switchboard in the main office, the members of the security patrol have taken over the duties of running the entire communications system. In a sense, the security patrol members are the guardians of the school for they maintain peace and order within our building. Ly GES; Agents Second Row: Grimaldi, K. Led by Captain Svagdis, a top notch catcher, our team played well against all opponents. We almost upset Boston Latin 3-1, and gave Boston English a bad fright before losing 6-2. These were the two power- houses of the City League. We did very well against the other members of the League. Several seniors closed out their careers: Captain Svagdis, a good long ball hitter; MacAulay, an outstanding shortstop and home run hitter; Kirowski and Shullenburg, dependable pitchers and utility outfielders. They will be missed. A bright spot in the season was the stellar play of newcomers. Bill Allen, Errol Saunders, and Steve Kaiser showed exceptional promise. Donegan, Hill, and Pucino played very well at every opportunity. A good nucleus for another good team will report in April. We wish good luck to our new coach Mr. Keane, and to Captain Bill McGilivray, one of the finest athletes to wear the uniform of Boston Technical. Baseball has always been a fine competitive sport at our school. With a new season and the driving energy of Coach Keane, it looks very promising. CAPTAIN WILLIAM McGILIVRAY 52 aa pA mt oes! Many boys who are interested in boats avail themselves of the opportunity to row on the Charles River, in a regular, supervised program, during the spring of the year. Again, boys who would otherwise have little or no oppor- tunity to row elsewhere find great enjoyment on the water as they learn rules of water safety and the fundamentals of rowing. The boating program in the Boston Public Schools is now five years old. Each year the participating schools have larger numbers of boys engaged in rowing. No boy is released for failure to win a seat, as it is the intention of the program director to make the sport available to everyone. Springtime on the Charles River is a wonderful season of the year. Crew at Boston Technical gives everyone a real chance to take part in school athletics. Coach Wall, an enthusiastic teacher of rowing, warmly welcomes any boy interested in this sport — a sport becoming more popular each year. 53 Football CO-CAPTAINS BUSHLOW AND COUTTS Fourth Row: Finn, Keefe, Walsh, Roche, Mitchell, Cunio, Duggan, Peterson. Dott le A lack of depth coupled with some unfortunate in- juries hampered the Blue and White this year. In- juries kept John Burke, Stan La Ronde, and George Peterson out of play for the entire season. Tech had three great running backs, so naturally a running offense was used out of the T-formation. Co-Captain Dave Coutts starred at half-back. The versatile Bill Corsetti, a good punter, ran well from the other half-back spot. Junior full-back Tom Montgomery played brilliantly and developed into a consistent scorer. Co-Captain Paul Bushlow, formerly an end, was switched to tackle. Jack Kelly filled the other tackle position. Three seniors very capably took care of the ends. Phil Samawicz, Bernie Spence, and Mike Garrity proved to be outstanding. Paul Nee, who played both offensive and defensive, was a stalwart center. Junior quarterback Bill Allen did a fine job directing the team; junior guard Ralph Le Beau brought strength to the line; junior John Ulrich was great on leading the interference. Opening the season in the annual Jamboree Tech overpowered Jamaica Plain 28 to 14. Scoring was opened when Dave Coutts tallied for a touchdown. On the conversion two points were added. Increasing our lead Bill Corsetti went over for six points. At this point Jamaica Plain managed to run up a quick four- teen points. Victory was clinched as Tom Montgomery crossed into the Plainers’ end zone twice. In the first league game Tech faced strong B.C. High and was repelled 32 to 16. Our defense held for a while, but weakened as the game proceeded. How- ever while losing 32 to 0 going into the fourth period Tech scored 16 points on touchdowns by Bill Corsetti. In the second game Tech lost to South Boston 28 to 6. The Blue and White’s score came with only 25 seconds left when Earl Williams swept around left end. 55 Tech got its first full-length victory by shutting out Dorchester 20 to 0. Tom Montgomery scored in the first period by climaxing a 75-yard drive with a run around end for seven yards. The second score came after a Dorchester punt was blocked by Phil Sama- wicz. The score was made by Dave Coutts. The scor- ing was finished in the second period when Mont- gomery went over for his second touchdown. After its victory over Dorchester, Tech was up for the game with Latin. However, Latin’s defense tight- ened in the second half. Tech opened the scoring with a touchdown by Dave Coutts on its first set of plays. Latin came right back to score six points. Tech fought back and Bill Corsetti scored our second touchdown, but only to have Latin tie it up before the half 12-12. The second half told the story as Latin scored 16 points while Tech managed to gain only 8 points on a fifty yard pass and run play from Bill Allen to Tom Montgomery. In the last game Tech played traditional rival Trade and gained a well-deserved triumph. Scoring was started by Montgomery who ran a left-dive play for sixty yards. Coutts got the conversion for two points. In the third period Trade scored six points, but to offset this Tom Montgomery ran the ball for a seventy- yard touchdown. In the fourth period Tech capital- ized on a fine defensive play. Phil Samawicz blocked a Trade punt. With Jack Kelly falling on the ball Tech gained control deep in Trade territory. Bill Corsetti quickly scored the touchdown and the two points on the conversion to finish the scoring. Next year Coach Moran will have a promising group of good players to develop. Leading the way will be Co-Captains Bill Allen and Tom Montgomery. Others coming back will be Ulrich, Le Beau, Ken Peterson, Rodrigues, Filosa, Pucino, and Johnson. Mr. Grant and Mr. Vaccari, two very competent physical edu- cation teachers, conduct a very full program of calisthenics, physical exercises, and games. Indeed a ho tly contested intra-mural basketball league was begun this year under their guidance. Every boy in school, except those excused by the school doctor, takes part in gym activities. Each boy has his own gym uniform consisting of sneakers, blue shorts, and white jersey. It is an invigorating sight to see each gym filled with eager boys performing the setting up drills, or going through intricate maneuvers to improve their coordination and muscular reactions. The various games such as volleyball and basketball are scenes of wild excitement. Gym helps to break up the school routine and helps our over-enthusiastic boys to work off some of that pent-up energy that otherwise might lead to unnecessary noise and confusion in the school. Nor can it be said that it was the worst. Shortly before the season started, Mr. William Powers, who had coached b asketball at Technical for fifteen years, passed away. Mr. Edward Grant was appointed coach. He found very few players who had had previous varsity experience. Coach Grant, an advocate of the fast-break and the man-to-man defense, worked long and hard to form a well-knit unit which, with a few of the breaks that the opposition always seemed to get, would have done much better than it did. Much to the credit of Coach Grant, co-captains Ed Osgood and Phil Samawicz, and the members of the team, every game was played in earnest until the final buzzer, despite a winless record. Throughout the season, the team lacked neither enthusiasm nor the spirit which is so essential to any team. 60 eee? wit ed ' H : : . . ? } 4 ee —— Second Row: Mgr. JOHN BURKE The other three veterans were senior George Santry, with GEORGE PETERSON juniors Tom Berkeley and Tom Ross. George Santry played his second season as starting goalie for the Blue and White. This year George did very well in posting seven shutouts in fourteen games to lead the league, and possibly the State. One of these shutouts came in our second game with English which ended in a 0—0O tie. Here George was called upon to make a save on a penalty shot. The season had a good end as we beat our traditional rival Trade 5—0. Junior center Tom Berkeley had the rare honor of scoring all five goals. Here Santry got shutout number seven due to the noteworthy work of defensemen John Burke and Tom Ross. The season ended with Tech having a record of nine wins, four losses, and one tie. Also the Blue and White finished in a two-way tie for second place in the City League. After-season honors were bestowed upon four of our players as they were named to the City-All Stars. The four consisted of repeater John Burke, along with George Santry, Tom Ross and Tom Berkeley. Next year’s Co-Captains will be Tom Berkeley and Tom Ross. However, we did win the big meet — The Regimentals. The squad was starred throughout with brilliant individual performances. Leading these was the outstanding Captain — Bob Credle. Bob has many things to his credit this year. First, in the State Meet he won the 1000; in the Nationals. Bob finished third in the 1000; and finally for a finishing touch he set a new Class “A” record in the 600 with a time of 1:18.1. Coach Carey feels that the record will stand for a long time. In the hurdles there was the steady, reliable crew of Sam Walker, Joe Brown, and John Mulligan. Charles Alkins and Dave Coutts were consistent place winners in the 300. Kevin Kelly and Ted Martinez showed improvement over the season in running the quarter mile and 600. In the mile there was the excellent running of Clem Pasquale and Paul Twohig. Underclassmen gathering points were: Stembridge outstanding in the 600, Leroy Rogers great in the sprints, Jerry Williams the squad’s most improved runner in running the 1000, and Steve DesRoche who led a crop of newcomers in the shot-put. Others returning next year will be Dunn, Gaines, Kritzman, Tolini, Showstead, Hood, Cater, Raynor, Cunio, and Doherty. While losses from graduation will be heavy, we wish the best of luck to next year’s Captain-elect Leroy Rogers and to Coach Carey to carry on the traditions of Boston Technical. 66 CHNED AL Be jase ek | THE MUSIC WAS GOOD AND THE ARRANGEMENTS EXCELLENT WILLIAM GEORGAQUI AND ROBERT MURPHY TOOK CARE OF THE FINANCES. Camp- bell College: Naval Air Flight School Ambition: Pilot Hobbies: Sports, Airplane Data Gin History Many years of practice were needed before a truly perfect product was ready to be mar- keted to the colleges of America. Now this product is ready in the form of the Class of ’61. As soon as the calibre of this product has been made apparent, we of the Technical High Mar- keting Service feel that colleges will reverse their usual procedure of having our students pay them for the privilege of entering their ivy- covered class rooms. They will pay our students for the distinct honor of having them in attend- ance. What makes us so sure that our product is that superior to the run-of-the-mill student? It is a hard thing to put one’s finger on but it centers about our assembly line technique. Its first step lies in the screening process. Only the choicest, most studious candidates are allowed in our storage bins. Here they await as did the members of the Class of 61, the unfold- ing of the manufacturing process. In their instance, this process began in Sep- tember of 1957 in a small sub-assembly plant near Egleston Square. Here, the raw material was parceled out in precisely measured amounts of 30 to 35 units. A long and accurately con- trolled tempering process, lasting the full four years, was begun here with the introduction of weights suspended from the students’ arms. No effort was spared to keep the students contented. How can other schools compete with us as to student quality when they do not see to it that their students see at least one first-run movie a week? How can they even dare to approach us when they feed their students com- mon food in their cafeterias? The answer is, they can’t. While at the sub- assembly plant our class was given tender, loving care by tender, loving teachers. Their diet con- sisted mainly of steak, turkey, fried squab, caviar, and Hostess Cupcakes. Who could ask for more? Of course it was not all first-run movies and champagne lunches. Hard, intensive training played an important part. Such subjects as the multiplication tables from 1 to 9, the alphabet from A to Z and the clock from 9 to 2:33 were mastered thoroughly. The preliminary manufacturing process pro- ceeded with only minor snags. For instance, it was months before students in a certain French sub-assembly class stopped blushing. Certain instructors took their classes for in- vigorating runs through Franklin Park while they memorized lengthy passages from “Parlez Vous Francais” or “The Further Adventures of Dick and Jane.” At mid-year, the plant quality control mana- ger, Mr. Harrison, stamped his seal of approval on the case-hardened exteriors of the Class of ’61, and shipped them, by M.T.A., to the main as- 105 sembly line, located in the heart of the financial district. Here, eager seniors unpacked them, fumigated them, and drained them of their resources. Their physical fitness was improved by introduction of a strict diet. No longer could they have steak, turkey, and caviar. Their intake was reduced to one Hostess Cupcake and a “Hoodsie” per day. Posture was improved by use of straight backed wooden seats instead of the upholstered theatre chairs of the sub-assembly plant. Students were introduced to stairs for the first time in their lives. No effort was spared to achieve the final goal — a student impervious to humidity, vibra- tion, vacuum, high temperature, extreme cold, radiation, cosmic rays, and knowledge. One major step in this over-all hardening pro- cess was the exposure of every student to a highly successful device perfected at Technical High and used there for many years. This remark- able device is called the Holland Furnace. Rough corners were knocked off in a self as- sembly process called woodworking. The high success of this phase of construction was evi- denced by the bill submitted to the School Com- mittee by the maintenance department of the plant, presided over by Miss Sullivan, R.N. So passed the first year of manufacture. The rough-polished students who failed Quality Con- trol were sent back to the sub-assembly plant for additional boring. It was now that many of the 1961 production run first encountered geometry, drafting, physics, chemistry, and Mr. Carpenito. They were all invigorating experiences. In drafting, for instance, students progressed rapidly. From a humble be- ginning rememorizing the alphabet for their lettering sheets, they proceeded onward and up- ward to produce (many for the first time) a straight line. They dared go even further and finally, after much preparation, they were ready for their first-year-drafting Final Exam. This re- quired that each student design and blue-print a 10 room split-level ranch house on an 8 x 11 manila sheet of paper. Other subjects were not quite so easy. The Health course proved to be a real trial. Boys with flat feet, less than 20-20 vision, or athlete’s brain were licked before they started. One very interesting and very important pro- duction step was begun here in the sophomore year. It was presided over by an able production manager, General Breen. General Breen had absolute control over this phase of production and equipped only with hand-tools such as the military drill, he managed to achieve fairly good alignment. All rejects because of mis-alignment were marked with a red “E” on their production reports. Not all the rough-finish work was being done Gls History in the sub-assembly plant for the 1961 production run. Some special models were being turned out at the main plant, in a remote corner of the sub- sub basement. Here in the forge shop, the stu- dents plumbed the mysteries of working with hot metals. They forged ahead with their work as salient points were hammered home. They poured on the coal and accomplished a prodi- gious amount of work. We regret to say that most of it was the product of a lot of hot air. However, these boys were steeled for any eventu- ality, after minor difficulties w ere ironed out. After this second phase of production called the sophomore year, the cream of the crop were passed on to the third major phase of manufac- ture, known colloquially as the junior year. All second operation products were brought together at the main assembly plant to begin preparation for the final inspection before the College Board. For this purpose, many of the students were given over to the care of the production manager of the English Department, a certain Doctor Hasenfus. Under his supervision, students learned the art of condensing the world’s greatest literature. They started, for practice, on Webster's Diction- ary. They then tackled something more difficult — the Reader’s Digest. On they went, blithely making molehills out of mountains. All of this production run were, at this time, introduced to the machine shop. To some, it seemed as though the machine shop resented this introduction. Others found it a delightful experience and waded into the sea of belts, coun- tershafts and pulleys with a vengeance. Such intricate projects as making thumbtacks out of eight pound castings, fashioning knurled, metal toothpicks, and fitting round pegs into round holes were undertaken. Students enjoyed the many games possible in shop. Some of these were Spin The Back-Gears; Center, Center-Who’s Got the Center?; and Change-The-Belt. This class was the last in the history of Tech- nical High to use the antiquated shop and other facilities of the Main Assembly Plant. Word had come from the Front Office on Beacon Street for Technical High to fold its tents and silently steal away to Dorchester. It was thus that the Class of ’61 gained invaluable experience in the art of packing. They bravely set to work packing books, chemicals, glassware, woodworking tools, Artisans, machinery, office records, teachers, and lunch room leftovers for the impending journey. Department heads requested boys to take certain items home with them for the summer vacation to facilitate the moving operation. Boys of the Class of ’61 outdid themselves by taking tem- orary custody of such items as’ 36 coal burning orges; 39 200-pound anvils; the school library; the tower from the Old Building; assorted dis- placed seagulls, pigeons, and vultures from above 106 item; the physics lab’s small atom smasher for small atoms; miscellaneous small atoms; Mr. Bluhm and his office; and four teacher’s assist- ants. The senior year came to the Class of ’61 and final polishing operations were commenced. Amidst the flurry of relocation in the new quart- ers, all concerned endured stoically the period which they affectionately called the “starving time.” There was no lunch room, no gymnasium, no lights, no heat, no clocks, no desks, no movies, no activities, and, occasionally, no classes. As if in deliberate conspiracy against Technical, the M.T.A. regularly managed to have their track- less trolleys lose their way between Dudley Street Station and Warren Street. It was not at all uncommon to see students arriving for Mon- day’s classes sometime during third period on Tuesday. At last, however, the last book was unwrapped, the last arbor press uncrated, the last teacher unpacked, and the last workman disentangled from the cobwebs. The new plant was ready to finish production of that priceless commodity, the Class of 61 of Technical High School. Such production men as Mr. Mulloy, whose specialty was “canning chatter,” Mr. Durante whose speci- alty was “doing good math” and “graphing,” Mr. Foley, whose specialty was teaching the spelling of “perspicacity” and “perspicuity,” and Mr. Shee- han whose specialty was keeping the home lesson papers of that all-important Class of ’61 “out of Soviet hands” — served to carry out final preparations for the final Quality Control check administered by the College Board. The year passed smoothly, more or less, and, one by one, most members of the class began to hear from such famous institutions as M.I.T., Rensselaer, Simmons, and Shimer. They were pawed over and sought after by various admissions offices until they were black and blue. Other illustrious institutions such as Wentworth, Franklin Tech, Saunders, Industrial Tech, Massachusetts Radio, and the U.S. Army battled over the rest until the limited supply was exhausted. And it came to pass that the Class of ’61 was signed, certified, graduated, and finally crated for shipment to institutions of higher learning all over America. This was a class of many firsts and many lasts, being the last junior class in the old quarters and the first senior graduating class in the new. It was manufactured under some of the worst conditions and under some of the best; processed with speed but yet with care; and graduated with congratulations rather than reservations. Truly this is a class where the ideal objective goal has been attained. Their good looks are exceeded only by their modesty, perspicacity, and perspicuity and they know good math. Richard A.
