BOSSI, The Editor The Editors of the TECHNICIAN are proud to announce the completion of the yearbook for the Class of 1956. To us this yearbook is more than a chronologi- cal outline of events. The TECHNI- CIAN represents to us the essence of Technical High School itself. Let us reminisce, then, as we turn the pages of this unique narration, for herein lies a record of the best years of our life. Now that we have completed the dis- tinctive courses prescribed at Technical, a decision confronts us. Shall we con- tinue our education in higher institu- tions of learning, or is the education that we have received at Technical adequate ? This decision cannot be neglected. In- dustry clamors for men of technical edu- cation. Shall we heed its plea now, or shall we seek further preparation before offering our talents to a waiting world? The Class of 1956 is destined to pre- serve the noble heritage bequeathed by its forebears! May God grant us strength to surmount the _ obstacles which lie ahead in a world made difficult by conflicting philosophies and aggres- sive governments. @ Blin: Whre eo 68 e THOMASSAUDI Ug eee) jee oe er ee Oecrerary JOSHEPHIEFE RELI OMe... eee ee Vice President HOM AS SHE GANGS eee ee eer ae Lrose rey KENNETH MacAULAY = oe oe Ee eresscent Whaler as) aD yrher Was OF tHeadeciter Whee WH 13 11. Jha Bt) Fe The year 1956 is an important one for Technical High School. The school has always been recognized as an outstanding school. Its history is an honorable one and it has sent forth thousands of young men to take lead- ing positions in the fields of engineering and technology. But it has done this under great physical handicaps. Our building is inadequate, our labora- tories are limited, some of our equipment is antiquated. We have succeeded despite difficulties. Now we hope that a new day is dawning. The first rays have appeared. Definite steps are being taken to provide Technical High School with a new building, a modern, up-to-date, well-equipped school plant. When that is completed there will be no limits to the accomplish- ments of Technical High School. To all of you boys I wish all good things. As you leave our school you carry with you my heartfelt wishes for happiness and success. I hope that you will return often as active alumni members and continue the proud tradition of service characteristic of graduates of Technical High School Your DL ferd mitten Walter J Sener YY {3 botk fitting Pps proper that wetdedizate the 1956 Sich ae fuaeelo V1. David “e I oenrrerrced) Mr. Rosengard, a graduate of English High School and Harvard University, has taught mathematics at Technical High School for nineteen years. In those nineteen years he has done more than just teach mathematics. He has en- deavored to instill in his pupils a thorough understanding of the subject rather than merely a mechanical knowledge. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity of studying under him know this to be true. As Senior Class Adviser Mr. Rosengard has counselled thousands of boys, giving unsparingly of his talents. A man of magnetic personality, zealous in all his undertakings, amiable, yet firm, Mr. Rosengard was one of the finest math- ematics teachers in all New England. At the beginning of the school year Mr. Rosengard was promoted to the position of Head of the Mathematics De- partment at Roxbury Memorial High School. We, the Class of 1956, wish Mr. Rosengard many successful years in his new position. 8 erro Good Wishes eo 8 To the Class of 1956: The decision of the Editors of the 1956 Yearbook to dedicate that vol- ume to me has provided a most pleasant note on which to take my leave of Boston Technical High School. If it is proper to interpret that dedication as a mark of esteem, then I must admit to a sense of deep gratification. As a teacher, however, I find even more satisfying the implication that my two decades at Technical High have not been without their usefulness. The passing years have confirmed me in my conviction that Boston Technical High School need bow to none in the opportunities it offers to willing students. It is my earnest hope that the Class of 1956 will justify that confidence through its performance in tomorrow’s world. To all its members I extend warmest good wishes for a full, a rich, and a rewarding future. Vi : Whabter o Duran an Outstanding LL ere re a Distinguished Clacater GUNNAR MUNNICK EDWARD J. Technical High School mourns the untimely passing of Mr. Herbert Carter, beloved Guidance Counselor, who passed away sud- denly on Friday, February 3. Mr. Carter, apparently in good health, left school in late afternoon but tn the early evening suffered a heart seizure that took his life. Mr. Carter will ever be remembered by the boys of his era as an efficient, kind, and helpful man who has left a standard of goodness that they may ever seek to emulate. The Class of 1955 ts to be con- gratulated for recognizing this man as tt did by its dedication of the 1955 TECHNICIAN to him as the man who was most worthy to receive this distinct tribute. May he rest in peace. 15 . Pr) seed LOVES Se D Ref ow S = ph SAR Say oF bs Registration Freshmen in ’58, bewildered and confused. What no gym?; we weren't amused. The tower’s great outline darkened the sky, and sometimes we'd watch the pigeons fly by. But enough of this play; we had yet to learn of the work and the studies that would come in turn. Then came the Orientation Assembly and a welcome from our Dean. He urged us to start out academically clean. Athletic interest increased with each game, as our hockey and track teams ignited the flame. Our hockey team was on the up-grade. Champs again after crushing Trade. Rallies were held after lunch in the hall, and our teachers could hear us having a ball. But throughout the year when we felt like relaxing, who was there with work that was taxing ? In the woodworking shops we arrived in herds. Remember that voice? “All right, you birds!” And in the lunchroom, to add to our strife, was the lurking T-Service. They hindered our life. The months flew by and when the end was near, we rejoiced at the thought of being sophomores next year. And as we departed for a long summer’s rest, we knew in our hearts that old Tech was the best. Sophomores in ’54, all set for a thrill. What did we get? Oh, no, not drill! “Roll down those sleeves! Button that shirt!” When the General was finished, our pride was hurt. And when we goofed off in the lines, remember that definition, “500 times.” But hidden from the surface was a dark, deep gorge, and Mr. Mower was there to issue a forge. The art of patternmaking came with ease, and most of us found the course a breeze. At Commerce an annex arose this year and we learned to study in a new atmosphere. Some teachers we had in this new-found haven were Messrs. Carey, Packard, McMahon and Avin. ' To Mr. Harrison go untold thanks, for putting up with our numerous pranks. And three cheers for the good Doctor! Of all the teachers we met, here is one we'll never forget. The Reggies were ours, both Outdoor and In. We Class C boys made it possible to win. Mr. Resnick’s “Artisans” continued to delight us. Especially the covers by Maris Platais. As each new report card was received with fear, we anticipated the end of our sophomore year. We commenced our vacation with that Technical spark, after finally reaching the half-way mark. 18 we (Beene enT Juniors in’55, physicists were we. “Physics is easy?” We didn’t agree. Machine shops were filled when we picked up our tools. Grinding and milling, we worked like mules. Athletic teams always glorified Tech’s name, and many other schools envied our fame. School clubs and activities this year were thriving. A popular one was Mr. DeGiacomo’s Pre-Driving. We were happy, when the seniors gave us the chance, to show off our girls at the fall Harvest Dance. Mr. Carter’s Career Day was held once again, and we all enjoyed listen- ing to well-informed men. Every day our courses seemed to get tougher, but the next year, we knew, they'd be even rougher. “Sentors,” we thought, “that’s we next year. Soon we'll be the ones the freshmen will fear.” But when we left in June, our teachers were kind; for all that they said was, “Keep your formulas in mind!” Seniors in’56, we’re at the end of the line. We’ll be alumni soon, leaving Technical behind. We are glad we came to fill your halls, even though dismayed by many pitfalls. Chemistry and trig hit us fast and hard. Some stuck their chins out and dropped their guard. “Better study for the College Boards!” our teachers would say. “Make hay while the sun shines, or else you will pay.” As seniors we felt important and proud, and our boisterous cavorting was varied and loud. The third floor classrooms housed most of our mass; each teacher was blessed with a memorable class. But how did men like Messrs. Morrill and McGrath continue to teach under the string of our wrath? To Karl Bossi it was just another folly when for President we elected Kenneth MacAulay. And to Messrs. Rosengard and DeGiacomo we bid a sad goodby, and praise all they did for Technical High. As the months passed by and the year ebbed away, requests for money seemed to come every day. But the goal of our years was at hand, and early in June it was time to disband. Four years have passed, and now that we are through, Farewell,—old Tech,—we fondly salute you. 19 William T. The members spend the meetings perfecting their skill in free-hand drawing and water coloring. From the submitted drawings are picked the covers of the “Artisan” and the designs for the Athletic Association buttons. Many boys who were once members of the Art Club have made places in the world of art... This magazine reports on school assemblies, sports, and other school activities, and gives all students a chance to do creative writing of short stories and poems. Under the supervision of Mr. Samuel Resnick in the literary department, and Mr. Ralph Rosen- thal in the art department, the magazine is well planned and well laid out. Mr. William Powers, as business agent, helps the ‘‘Artisan” to be financial- ly sound. 65 Band Mr. Houlihan, our director, has trained the school band to play like a professional musical unit. Each year, the band has been one of the finest in the city, keeping as it does, precision cadence and playing difficult marches expertly. Besides playing at assemblies, the band has had outside engagements, such as those at Filene’s and on the Boston Common. Like many musical groups, it has a band within a band, which is a small brass unit. This unit played Christmas Carols in front of the Bos- ton Post building in downtown Boston, in Decem- ber, at the invitation of Mayor John B. Hynes. Jack Burns is our drum major, and his work in the band both during prize drill and the schoolboy parade was outstanding. 66 Third Row: Gibson, Biondo, McDonald, Lewis, Abbott, Crook, McNeill, Norton, Dauphinee. Bowling With Mr. Bowes as its capable adviser, the school’s bowling league competes weekly at the Huntington 55 Alleys. There are eight teams com- posed of four boys each, under the chairmanship of Anthony DeCristoforo. The schedule consists of a double round-robin, each team playing its ad- versaries twice. This popular group is sponsored by the Stu- dent Council, and awards are given at the close of the season to the player with the highest three- string total, and to the championship team. 67 (eee Chub Under the direction of Mr. Harry Webster, the camera club meets twice weekly for instructive discussions about the latest developments in the photographic field. Frequently boys bring in their own pictures and photographic equipment which Mr. Webster discusses fully, bringing out their good points or citing the disadvantages of the dif- ferent types. Mr. Webster also augments his discussions with some very old jokes that only he can appre- ciate. 68 Second Row: Raposa, MacKenzie, Kuperman, Wiley, Slezas, LeTourneau, Miller, Tur- ley, Bartels. Chess Club Among the various activities at Tech is a rather strong Chess Club which meets in the li- brary Wednesdays and Fridays. Mr. Seiniger took over the position as director of the Chess Club after His Dukeship, Lord Arthur Racine, retired from active teaching. Our school is depending on these Knight- Pawn specialists to sweep over all the other school chess clubs in the city and to give our school the name of “Chess Champion.” 69 rr 4 | Ui Cuil Ap P eral Third Row: Jager, Heffel, Orfant, Matacunas, Murphy, Newell, Sawyer. GE Day (GPT We graduates of Technical High look back with great pleasure to the memories of our Senior Class Day when we enjoyed an interesting Assem- bly Hall program and a fine outing at Lynn Beach. In the hall, the morning program of Class Will, Class History, and Class Prophecy gave many a chuckle. The happy afternoon spent at Lynn Beach with sports such as baseball and swimming, and with a delightful lunch prepared by our class “cooks,” provided one of the most enjoyable days of our lives. At our school we have es- tablished a club that augments the work down in the drafting classes even though drafting is a re- quired subject for all four years. This Drafting Standards Club goes far beyond the requirements for our classes and has been a very popular organi- zation for many years. C. scored, but this time Tech could not break through the opponent’s strong defense. The game ended with the score B. C. High 13, Tech 7. Tech’s opponent on Columbus Day was English High. In the first half English scored two touchdowns. In the second half Tech controlled the ball but was unable to score until the fading minutes of the fourth quarter when Frank Woodward threw a 31-yard pass to Joe Lentine. The final score was English 12, Tech 6. Tech really showed what it was capable of doing when it faced Jamaica Plain High. In the first period John Barry recovered a fum- ble and threw to Don Conlin, who went to the Jamaica Plain 17-yard line. Ken Holland took the ball here and scored the first touch- down of the game. In the second quarter Con- lin scored two touchdowns for Tech. Jerry Galizio pushed the Tech score up six points with a 32-yard run, making the final score Tech 25, Jamaica Plain 0. Tech took the field against a powerful Latin team and was literally snowed under. AI- though our boys fought bravely, they could not stop the Purple and White who ran up a 39 to 0 score. Karly in the first period of the Roxbury Memorial game Tech fumbled on its own eight-yard line, and Memorial recovered, scor- ing a few plays later. Tech pushed Memorial all over the field but did not have the little ex- tra power to score when needed. The game ended with Memorial winning, 7 to 0. Tech showed real courage at White Sta- dium when it upset favored Trade. With the score 7 to 6 in favor of Trade, Tech brought the fall to the Trade 8-yard line with only seconds to play. Although filled with typical Technical High spirit, this year’s squad wasn’t the winningest in the league. The Senior Class was represented by Captain Don Luster, Bill Concan- non, and Charlie LaRosa, all of whom tried their best in each and every game. Dorchester High put together a powerful team this year, and came out sitting on top of the league. All of its starters are capable of hitting double figures, and this proved to be too much as they defeated our Technicians, 62-45, and 65-44. Buff Donovan was our high scorer in both games. Roxbury Memorial, second best in the league, defeated the squad by scores of 88-53 and 78-53. Don Luster, Buff Donovan, and Phil Gallagher shared the high scoring. B. C. Boston Latin wasn’t any too sure of its victories, until the last-quarter jitters gave them the games by scores of 58-38 and 60-51. Don Luster and Buff Donovan shared the spotlight for the high scoring. Boston Trade, in the first game, was defeated by our Technicians, 63-59. In the second game, Trade was still up in the clouds as a result of being the only team to defeat Dorchester, and from that height, the baskets came easily. Despite the efforts of our high jumping center, Al Hines, Trade won, 55-48. Tech followed this victory by defeating Memorial, 15-6, and then won its third straight game by defeating Trade, 4-0, a game in which Robert Burke struck out seven men. Despite hits by Bergin, Fucillo, and DeStefano, we lost to Latin, 9-2, in fourteen innings. Tech then bowed to English, 4-1. In this game Tech was able to squeeze out only two hits, one by Bradley and the other by Barry. In the next game, Tech just couldn’t seem to get rolling and was de- feated by Memorial, 1-0. The following day, Tech, after a hard fight, finally gave in to B. C. High, 6-5. Ronnie Moccia, Tech’s fireball shortstop, came through with three hits. One of our bad days came on May 20, when we were drubbed by Eng- lish, 18-0. During the second game with B. C. High, althought the entire team was hitting, B. C. High again came out on top, 6-3. In our second game with Trade, we were edged out, 9-8, despite Barry’s four hits in five times at bat. Tech became victorious in its next-to-the-last game of the season by overpowering Latin, 8-4, but lost the final game to Dorchester High, 6-2, giving us only a fair record, despite our very good early season play. 100 a wen ag | ( ae r BASEBALL — JUNIOR VARSITY Second Row: Mercurio, McDermott, Woodward. Un- defeated by any other club, the team literally ran into a stone wall upon playing Boston English and lost twice, 2-0, and 2-1, for its only setbacks of the season. Easily defeating its first three opponents, Memorial, Latin, and Dorchester, the Buff and Blue was beaten by English, to lose hold of first place in the league. Captain Allen Jarasitis then led his team back into conten- tion by setting down Boston Trade 3-0, and Boston Latin, 5-0. The Latin game marked the fifth shut-out in six games for goalie John Keane, a remarkable feat. In the next game English clinched the championship by upend- ing Technical, 2-1. The season opened auspiciously at Com- mander Ralph Colson’s Fargo Meet in late December, when our boys did themselves proud in carrying the colors of our school. A week later at the Y. M. C. A. Meet, Tech’s speedsters supplied keen competition in all events. On January 9, Tech met its top rival, Eng- lish, in a triangular meet, forcing English to the very last event and losing by the slight margin of three points. At the B. A. A. Meet in Boston Garden on January 14, Tech proved itself to be a strong candidate for the State Meet Crown which was to follow three weeks later. Some out- standing performances were exhibited by Vin Bono in the shot-put, Bob Harrington in the 300-yard run, and last but not least, our relay team. A week before the State Meet, Tech showed its superior strength by swamping B. C. High, Dorchester, and Roxbury Memorial. In the State Meet Vin Bono won the shot-put, Larry Reed took a second in the 50-yard dash, while Bill Tompkins surprised everyone by running a terrific mile to take a fast second. Our boys compiled a total of sixteen points which gave Tech a third place in the Meet. In the Relay Carnival, Tech racked up six points which were enough to give them the Reggie lead. The two-lap relay which was composed of Freeman, Walsh, Galizio, and Harrington, just missed breaking the record: Although in their next meet the track team captured nine out of eleven first places in Class A, Latin managed to beat them by four points because of our weakness in Class B. Tech entered the Reggies as defending champions of two successive years, and lost the crown to English only because of the lack of new boys. The boys who excelled in the Reggies were Larry Reed and Gordon O’Reil- ly in the 50-yard hurdles, Jim Walsh in the 1000, Phil Johnson in the half mile, Austin Layne in the 300-yard run, Darryl Freeman in the broad jump, and Vin Bono in the shot- put. Next year, again under the able coaching of Mr. Carey and guided by Captain-elect Vin Bono, Technical should regain the Reggie Crown if the younger boys who failed to com- pete this year will be imbued with enough of the traditional Technical High School spirit to practice earnestly and faithfully. 7 : ioe st hie : we - { r sagt:,Sprechen Ste deutscl Herr Seinige English Stopped by the forward line oc ¥ j +S ae | Ss nent ne omer 8 gg ee GOOD LUCK TO 1956 FROM MR.
