Pritts: Cars i sil D CHISEMAS With the advent of 1955 came new experiences for many boys of Technical High. The preparation and writing of sundry articles and items for the “Technician” gave many Seniors their first impression of journalism. Our zealous staff has worked diligently together for many months so that you, the students, may always remember the important and pleasing events which occurred during your four years at Technical High. We have all come a long way since first entering Tec h. We now begin to realize that the road ahead will be long and tedious. Like new-born babes coming into the world, we are yet unaware of our environment but eager to find out what life is like. We are fortunate to live in a land as prosperous as this, for each of us may now choose the par- ticular field of endeavor he wishes. The opportunities are abundant to any enthusiastic individuals such as Technical High produces. Many years from now as you reminisce through the “Technician,” fond memories will pervade your thoughts. We, the staff, sincerely hope that you will cherish this keep- sake more and more as time passes on. Previous graduates, in whose footsteps we are about to tread, have set a criterion which I know we will follow: “To take our places among the better citizens of our coun- try, state, and community.” Martin S. High Purpose To each one of you, at the completion of your course at Technical High School, it is my pleasure to extend the very best wishes of the Faculty. We believe that the years with us have been well spent and that you are prepared satisfactorily for the work you will be called upon to ac- complish. We are confident that, upholding the high ideals and the traditions of this school, you will continue to cherish the virtues of industry, integrity, and high purpose. Insofar as you develop these qualities, in that degree will your lives be productive, happy, and effective. Your Sihedboreth Walter SJ Srnee One DY Able: MR. HERBERT P. CARTER Our Guidance Counselor x) the Viele S the (Gir Ofe SDR ee I want to extend my sincere thanks to you for your kindness in dedicating the Year Book to me this year. It is one of the nicest things that has happened to me in thirty years of teach- ing. I only hope that the services of the Guidance Department have been of sufficient value to you to merit this token of your good will. I wish you the best of everything in the years that lie ahead of you. As to the future of your generation I am optimistic. Despite threats of war abroad and certain conditions here at home that we can hardly be proud of, it is on the whole a good world that you are about to enter and most of the people in it are good people. Opportunities for those who want to go to college or to other institutions of higher learning were never better. For those of you who are going immediately into industry, employ- ment prospects are only fair at present, but they should improve by the time you graduate. I am convinced that fine things are in store for the American people and that we are going to achieve in this country a higher standard of living and a greater measure of happiness than any we have known before. I further believe that we shall attain this goal in the lifetime of most of the members of your class. It’s great to be young in times like these, with your life ahead of you and with so much to look forward to. My fondest hope for each one of you is that you will always retain the buoy- ancy, optimism, and enthusiasm of your youth, and that life will be a glorious adventure for you to the last day that you live. I congratulate you upon the successful completion of your high school course and I cordially invite you to drop in at the Guidance Office anytime you feel that we can be of service to you. HERBERT P. We did nothing, it seems, but fill out information cards and receipts, and of course there was very little homework. Until we learned our way around the school, we were forever coming into classes late with the silly excuse, “I got lost!” This was. partly due to the upper-classmen who beguiled us continually, sending us up to the swimming pool on the seventh floor, to the telegraph department (the carrier pigeons in the old tower), and to the dark and dreary forge shop. There are many Technical High pupils who in future life will fondly remember the Art Club. The member of this club may never become art- ists, but what is more important, they will have a recreational pastime and an appreciation of the finer things of life. They also gain a knowledge of harmonizing colors which may not only help them in art but in everyday uses such as the interior decorating of a home or office, or the improvement of their personal appearance. Thus in this club they have not only gained an appreciation of art but also a practical and useful knowledge that will make their adult lives more worth living. CLS Prophecy Well, here I sit on Cloud Bank 11. Sure is comfortable here, with nothing to do but watch angels dance around. How did I get here? The “Artisan,” now in its forty-eighth year of publication at Techni- cal High School, is written and edited by the students themselves. Issued three times a year, the “Artisan” contains an account of all school activities such as sports, assemblies, and special events. The maga- zine also has many original stories, poems, articles, and features. The editors-in-chief, Emil Boire and Sanford Hamilton, together with their staff, have kept to the high standards which have made the “Arti- san” a leader among school publications. A special tribute should be given the boys in the art department for their fine work on covers, cartoons, and illustrations. The faculty advisers, Mr. Samuel Resnick, Mr. Ralph Rosenthal, and Mr. William Powers, have given wise and valuable counsel to the “Artisan” staff. with Ted (King Kong) Burbank. I was supposed to have met him at his farm to sample some of his famous Matseroni cheese, but I stopped in at Al DiPierro’s barber shop for a quick shave and a haircut. As luck would have it, Ronnie Gilroy was having his D. A. cut-off, so I had to wait while Al went out to borrow a power lawnmower. Well! that’s neither here nor there. Now, where was I? Oh, yes!. First Row: Ierardi, Khachadoorian, Welch, Wood, Johnson, Cohen, Norton, Burns, Parris, Phinney. Naturally every high school is proud of its band, but no school can be more pleased with the showing that its musical unit makes each year than can we. Although our band does not always place first in the School- boy Parade, it can always be relied upon to be a strong contender for top honors. This year, in addition to our usual shows, the band performed on the Boston Common and at Filene’s. Our instructor, Mr. Houlihan, is by all standards very capable in his position of training such a group and bringing out its true talent. The band meets on every Friday during the school year and practices dili- gently in order to attain its high degree of proficiency. ern aoe Bugle Gan Top Row: Dawson, Keeler, Burke, Whitehouse, Weeks, Petrillo, Smith, Duddy, Riley. Under the direction of Mr. Latham, the Drum and Bugle Corps by its precise playing and marching has swept into the select circle of the city’s best. Each year on Prize Drill Day the Corps is given the chance to per- form before the boys of Technical High. Once given the chance, it always puts on a spectacular show of precision drill. On Parade Day it competes against the corps of the other city schools, and this year it has high hopes of showing its superiority. We are very proud of the Drum and Bugle Corps and know it will continue its good work during the years to come. Front Row: Silowan, Raso, Velardo (Chairman), Venezia, Scavitto, Bro- die, Stankus, Riley, Swartz. Although organized under the auspices of the Student Council, the Bowling League is an entirely separate and self-supporting group, to which any student may belong. All details of scheduling games, computing scores, and determining averages are handled by the members themselves through their very able chairman, Frank Velardo, and his assistant, Rob- ert Venezia. It is hoped that this wholesome after-school activity will continue to grow from its present status to become an important extra-curricular ac- tivity at Technical High School. Betsy and I were really flogging along where it happened. Now don’t get me wrong. Betsy’s as sure-footed as a cat, but the road on the mountain where I was driving was too narrow and winding for the speed at which we were moving. It really happened though, because the sight of Walter Fatr- ley running up the mountainside and singing “‘Swanee” and “Chebung” at the top of his voice was too much for me. I lost control of the car and i Cle OF Top Row: Bordieri, Fairley, Boire, Finnegan, Ryan, Anderson, Macaulay, Keane, Zager, Muise, Royston, Strazdas, Brady, Vaughan, Loonie, Reid, Petersen, Gundal, Joyce, Hiltz, Fogarty, Mosely, Rettman, Grin- bergs, Henchey, Myren. Front Row: Reade, Hoyle, Oliveri, Ladrigan, Nigloschy, Hamilton, Dou- cette, General Breen, Tamkin, Svenson, Celona, Nee, Buldini, Kent, Ahearn. With the help and leadership of General Breen, the Cadet Officers worked diligently to fashion our drill teams to be the best in the city. Moreover, each captain and his lieutenants tried in every way possible to achieve the secret desire of every officer, to have his company in first place in Prize Drill. The officers have always made very good showings at both Prize Drill and the Schoolboy Parade and have won more than their share of the Schoolboy Parade prizes. However, none of these fine former officers could surpass our accomplishments, for according to the words of General Breen, our young soldiers-to-be are especially proficient this year. Chess Club Ba ck Row: Riley, Hasenfus, Couming, Vaughn, Martin, Finnegan, O’Toole, Diatchenko, Vadeisa, Fallon, Schmidt, L., Mr. Racine. Front Row: Antonellis, Devine, Thomas, Schiffman, Reade (President), McDonald, Silverman, Schmidt, V.; Donahue. The prospects for a successful season in the Interscholastic Chess League were dimmed in September, 1953, when an outstanding player, Theodore Levine, transferred to Roxbury Memorial High School. Hopes were raised, however, when a new group of chess players, under the super- vision of Mr. Arthur Racine, trained with extra care and the club attained the same degree of proficiency as before. Every Wednesday and Friday a group of about fifteen young men meet in Room 23 to study photography under the supervision of Mr. Harry Webster. The boys bring in not only cameras which they use and photographs for discussion but also photographic problems which Mr. Webster helps them solve. The students have learned many secrets of taking pictures, develop- ing negatives and prints, and also have learned much about Stereoscopic Photography. Through Mr. Webster’s efforts, this year several boys participated in the National High School Photography Contest, and we are anxiously awaiting the notification that we have won some of the coveted awards. “Oh,” I answered, “that’s nice of you.” For a minute I thought someone had spiked my sarsaparilla. “What can I do for you? This year one of the largest Class Day Committees in the history of the school was formed. The committee, under the excellent guidance of Mr. Holland who has conducted all Class Days in the past, worked hard to make this day the most memorable of all. We will never forget the ride to Lynn Beach in the crowded cars, nor the wisecracks and “goofing off’ of members of each carload. Since this was to be the last time that most of the class would ever be together, we all enjoyed ourselves to the full and then some. The activities of the day included baseball, races, swimming, boating, and eating. What memories for us to carry away forever! “Just like the Meadow Glen,’ I said. “Boy, if Gundal and Hamilton could see this set!’ “Gee, they’re all successful,” I said as I watched Dave Duff tell jokes. P | Athletics _AL Technical High Since 546 B.C., athletics have been in progress on this earth, and like- wise, for sixty-two years athletics have been progressing at Technical High. For sixty-two years we have been noted for our outstanding achievements on the athletic fields of Boston. Our school spirit has always been the highest. At some period in our famed history Technical has reigned in every sport. Great athletes of remarkable ability have trudged through the en- chanted halls of our 1893 structure. Tom Lacey, of track fame, smashed many state records for Technical. Ralph DeLeo astonished the sports world when he shot eleven consecutive goals during one game in 1953 at the Arena. Bernie Teliszewski, of gridiron fame, won many games for Technical with his terrific power and drive. Beside the great athletes of Technical stand a greater group of men, the coaches. Coach Holland, with his fighting spirit, steered many a team to a city championship. Coach McGrath, with his calm but intensified pep talks, spirited many football and baseball teams to victory. We were peren- nial track champs under Mr. Holland; now comes another outstanding track coach in the person of Mr. Joseph Carey. Overpowering the favored Eng- lish High, our fleet-footed Technicians have brought the famous track trophy back to its place in our trophy case after a fourteen-year absence. Basketball has been lucky with the patient coaching personality of Mr. William Powers. We know that the versatile posterity of Technical will never let its superb record of spirit and glory disintegrate, for its athletes and coaches will never let us down. Curley again led the offense with three hits and three runs batted in, but even he was not enough to beat a fine Commerce team, which drove home 11 runs to Tech’s 6. Pitcher DiStefano chipped in two hits to help himself win a 7-3 vic- tory over Charlestown. Captain Worswick and Curley also got two hits as Technical again stepped into the victory column. Against the Red and Black Dorchester, pitchers DiStefano and Burke struck out eleven men between them, but Dorchester had a good day otherwise, and took the game, 9-1. First baseman Bergin and shortstop Moccia banged out two hits apiece, which enabled pitcher Burke and Technical to take the game from Memorial, 4-0. On May 11, Boston College High took away an easy victory, as Techni- cal bowed to a 10-1 defeat. On May 20, Tech pulled a stunning upset by defeating heavily-favored East Boston, 2-0. DiStefano struck out twelve Eastie batters, and Curley and Bergin got two hits each to pace the Technical attack. For the second game in a row, Tech pulled a surprising upset to beat English, 8-7, in a 10-inning thriller at Billings Field. Bergin and catcher Barry each got three hits as Technical put a big dent in English High ’s championship hopes. On May 27, Technical closed out the season to Latin, losing by a score of 9-2. The 1955 Basketball season will not go down in Tech- nical’s athletic history with any glorious upsets or igno- minious defeats listed on its scrolls. It was a below average season in which the team won a third of its games. This was due in part to an inexperienced bench composed mostly of sophomores and a lone freshman. Three seniors, Captain Ed. Culhane, Ed. Gates and Fred Goldstein, ably abetted by fellow senior Bill Tregoning, carried the major playing load. Only Ed Gates had previously been a starting player. Except for a Dorchester and Latin game our boys were always in contention right down to the wire. On the days we lost, that ‘ol debil’” ball just didn’t take the right bounces. Coach Powers tried all his moves to get a pair of hot-handed corner men who might have put us in Tech Tourney Competition but they were not to be found. In city competition Ed Gates was the third highest scorer, with 211 points. As we go to press, Ed stands a good chance of being picked on the All-Star Team. Fred Goldstein, our Cousy-like backcourt man, was high on the city’s scoring list with 116 points. Ed Culhane was our “brain” who set up the plays and always was assigned to cover the opponents’ best player. He had the thankless job that fails to catch the glamorous headlines. Ed was always a players’ player. Next year’s prospects look bright, with some experienced players returning. We wish them the best and hope that the ball will adjust to the right bounces. The B.A.A. games followed, with Moses Scott taking a second in the hurdles, and Harvey tying for first in the high jump. Before the State meet, Tech crushed two more schools, Dorchester and English. In the State Meet on January 29, Scott took second in the hurdles. Svenson placed in the shotput, and Campanella in the dash. The following week Tech beat English and Latin by thirty points. February 18 saw Moses Scott and Buzz Harvey representing Tech in Madison Square Garden at the Nationals. Scott won two heats in the hurdles and Harvey tied for sixth in the high jump. In the Malden Invitation meet, Scott won the hurdles in record time, while Harvey cleared five feet eleven-and-one-half inches for a tie for first. On March 5, the Technicians completed a perfect cycle of victories by winning their second Regimental meet. Boys excelling in this Boston schoolboy classic were Jerry Galizio, Gene Thomas, Bob Harrington, Moses Scott, Jim Walsh, Dave Hasenfus, Larry Reed, Bart Campanella, and Rod Lytell. Tech’s de- fense was magnificent, and the blue-clad Technicians displayed a steady offense. In Tech’s first regular season game, Captain Gil Smith led his team to a decisive victory over Boston College High. Two first period touchdowns put Tech in front, where they stayed for the remainder of the game, win- ning 20-7. Tech suffered its first setback of the campaign to English High. In this game, Technical’s potent offense never got rolling, while the English team scored once on a pass play and later on a safety to win, 8-0. Against Latin, Tech’s offense did not get rolling until the second half, and then it was too late. Latin scored twice in the first half, and that was enough to gain them the victory. There is not much to be said about the Memorial upset. It was simply a case of Tech’s not being able to do anything right, while Memorial could do nothing wrong. Ji m Harris led Tech to a smashing victory over a gallant Hyde Park team. Harris scored three touchdowns in the second half to pass Hyde park: John Barry at end and Paul Wentzell at guard led Tech’s defense as they stopped cold Dorchester’s single wing. Bono, Mazzarella, Mills, Reid, and Gaudet made valuable contributions to the Tech defense. However, Tech’s offense could not push the ball across the Dorchester goal line either, and the game ended in a 0-0 tie. In the traditional Trade game, Ron Moccia, an elusive halfback, ran wild over Trade, but his performance was not enough to score against a valiant defense. Many times fullback Don Conlin and halfbacks Moccia and Harris carried the ball the length of the field, only to be stopped at the goal. This game also ended in a 0-0 tie. Coach John Morris is to be congratulated for this year’s excellent squad. The teamwork of this year’s group will be a standard for all future Technical teams. It was a team of which we may be proud. Carrol Mr. Golden Golf The golf team was a better-than average one this past fall as it finished in third place in the city race. Many had hoped for a better season, but they readily accepted this one as satisfactory. Coach Golden had a strong team composed of Captain Charlie Hannon, Guy Guarino, Bill Kennedy, John Lally, Paul DeBassio, Tom Mahoney, John Turke, and James Poodiak. However, Latin and Commerce also had very fine teams; the City League’s final statistics showed Latin, the perennial power, in first place, followed closely by Commerce and Tech. One interesting point is that Tech gave Latin the hardest and closest match in the latter’s undefeated season, the score being in doubt until the final hole. Next year’s Captain Hannon is anxiously awaiting next season for the outlook is a very bright one. Castelnovo : Portnoy Mr. Golden Capt. Maloof Leimonas Carrol SI ennus The Technical Tennis team finished the season with a very creditable showing of 6 wins and 2 defeats. South Boston, Brighton, Commerce, Hyde Park, English and Trade fell before our racquet squad, but Memorial and Latin vanquished us in bitter contests. Led by popular Ronald Antonucci our team also featured seniors James Auns, Tauty Slezas, and James Bag- nall. Ed Ryan who suffered a shoulder injury was unable to play, and his loss was a great blow to our hopes of a championship. Next year we will have to build a new team around our Captain Hal Maloof. Here’s good luck to our versatile captain and to Coach Golden. fi De RETIN SR ey een mer: a: A AME tice ET? ONES. HA, vs OC. ey Boston Technical, once famous for its city championship hockey teams, struck fear into the league-leading Latin and English teams this year by tying both clubs. Handing English a 2-2 tie was good enough, but we did even better, for we held vaunted Latin scoreless in the battle of the season. With the air tense, as it always is in rival games, Technical proudly took the ice against its arch rival, Trade. Always a fighting team, Trade played well, but not well enough to beat us, for we played our hardest and best, handing the Parker Street boys two defeats during the season and defeating Memorial as well. This year was a building year for our hockey team. The squad was young and inexperienced, yet we showed dormant strength. Our boys played extremely well the entire season. Four of the older members were chosen to participate on the All-star team. These outstanding boys were Capt. Charlie Hannon, John MacAulay, Bill McCabe, and Bob Ward. What the future holds in store for Tech’s hockey team no one knows, but we have great possibilities. We are positive that in the future we shall see Tech once again as City Champs.
