We, the Class of 1965, have the dis- tinction of being the first graduating men and women to experience the change and expansion of our college. What better theme could we depict other than this one of change which has left its mark on our four years. To begin at the beginning, we must open our story in the Spring. t: r: In the springtime a student ' s thoughts often turn lightly to extra-curricular elbow rubbing on the nearby Fens, or in that pre- expansion standby, the courtyard. There al- ways seemed to be an extra minute to spend in the court before class began, just as there used to be room there for past gradua- ting classes. The bookstore still operates, but our smoker has joined the halls of academe. This is the Caf that was. Whether for eating or studying, its atmosphere was unique. No one ever worried over where smoking was or was not permitted. 10 This is the Caf that is. Whether for table- hopping or impromptu announcements, its function is undeniable. Finding a place to sit fast becomes a developmental task in so- cial maturation. 14 There were times when we studied. If the lower h- brary was lacking in space, the upper library never was. There it was that we went to confirm our title of student. 15 While some things change, others never do. Our knowledge and ambition are inte- gral parts of our future . . . ' ■fTT ' -r ' ■iraa And so it was to others that we went to shape our ambitions and perfect our knowledge. When shall we ever see their like again? 20 21 22 New stairs for old. Truly, The old order changeth giving place to the new. The changes are now here and the ivy has not caught up with the build- ing program. However, transportation remains constantly inconstant, and an intramural football game still draws support- ers to the Fenway. 24 25 My warmest congratulations go to you, the Class of 1965, upon the completion of your four years at Boston State College. You have been distinguished not only for your scholarship, but also for your exceptional spirit and enthusiasm. The College is at present passing through the most exciting period in its history. The enrollment has doubled within the past few years. The science building has been completed, and plans for a large gymnasium are now moving forward. On the drawing boards are designs for a fourteen-story classroom building. The faculty, one of the finest in the area, has grown rapidly. For these reasons, among others, you can be proud that you attended Boston State. Let your pride show itself in tangible ways. Bring credit to your alma mater by cultivating excellence in all your endeavors. Support the expansion of the college in every way that you can. Take a vigorous part in the activities of your Alumni Association. May God grant you every measure of success and happiness in your profession and in your lives. DR. WILLIAM F. LOONEY President 26 27 1 1 Intellectual achievement has been fos- tered by dedicated professors and instruc- tors. Two years of a liberal arts background broadened our scope, and the following years prepared us in our chosen fields. 28 Curricular changes, a growing faculty, newly-offered degree programs: all signs of an exciting expansion period. 30 ADMINISTRATION ROBERT J. Notably, our class witnessed the birth of Lecture Society and the literary mag- azine, Spectrum — both important additions to college life. 53 STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION Every Friday afternoon at 3:30 P.M. a group of students gather in Collins Hall to participate in the weekly Student Government meeting. The SGA officers, class representatives, and other interested students, guided by Robert ' s Rules of Order, discuss and vote upon issues of importance to all college members. The function of the SGA in the college is most important, for all subsidiary organizations must have both their constitutions and budgets accepted by the Council. In addition to its governing function, SGA conducts various social events during the year for the enjoyment of all students. The year of 1964-1965 has been successful for SGA under the able leadership of President Jack Crowley and his fellow officers, Paula Antanelis, Bill Martin, Judy Brown, Kathy Byrne, Ron Areglado, and Barbara Gaffney. These officers along with committee chairmen have planned affairs such as the All-College Banquet, the Freshman Parents ' Tea, the Holiday Ball, the All-College Musical, the One-Act Play Contest, and the Green and Gold Dance. In our college years each of us has in some way benefited from the activities of the Student Government Association. 54 Holiday Ball 55 All-College Banquet nK iJ V tOn (BlUht Ur e h Lil Abner 61 ■■Htii BUi lit _s v FRANCE SPANISH CLUB FRENCH CLUB Bonjour! Members of the French Club greet each other in this way at their monthly meetings. They come together to discuss their mutual interest in French customs and traditions. In order to in- crease their knowledge about the French people they initiated a program this year in which they exchanged letters and tape recordings with students from a Teach- ers ' College in Strasbourg, France. In December the annual dinner was held at a French restaurant in Boston. Despite minor difficulties in reading the menu, all were delighted with their for- eign repast. Conversing with the waiters was an excellent test of the members ' proficiency in French. The trip to Canada during April vaca- tion gave the members first-hand knowl- edge of French life, a valuable experi- ence for those who made the trip. Those who attended meetings of the French Club during 1964-1965 were pleased with the wide range of activities offered. The Spanish Club opened its 1964- 1965 season by attending a performance of the Ballets de Madrid. Members who attended saw a variety of Basque dances, a ballet in one act, and an arrangement of Flamenco dancing. The purpose of the club is to foster the speaking of Spanish in the college, outside of the classroom, and to acquaint the members with Spanish-American cus- toms, and the differences between our culture and that of South America. The officers for this year were Neil LaVita, President; Joanna Raftes, Vice President; and Nancy Thompson, Secre- tary-Treasurer. The faculty adviser was Miss Walsh who studied in Spain, and who provided the club with interesting comments on Spanish life. The Spanish Club had a most success- ful year and welcomed the support of its members from the Class of 1965. SCIENCE CLUB The Science Club offers an interesting program for both the scientifically and non-scientifically inclined. It is the aim of the club to acquaint its members with information concerning the new develop- ments of science and technology, and to promote an interest in the field. This year the club enjoyed field trips to the Science Museum, the weather sta- tion at Logan Airport, and Woods Hole. Also, lectures by members of the Science Department stimulated worthwhile dis- MATH CLUB Interested members among the student body helped to reactivate the Math Club this year. The organization fulfilled the dual purposes of introducing the mem- bers to the more intellectual aspects of mathematics, and of providing a social outlet for those interested in the lighter side of the science. An especially valuable experience was a visit to the computer center at MIT. Those students who participated this year were glad that sufficient interest was aroused so that Boston State ' s mathema- ticians could join together in their own society. MUSIC CLUB Membership in Music Club is open to all students who are interested in music. The choral society provides music at col- lege and civic functions. Each year the club presents an oratorio and a second major production, An Evening with the Music Club, which includes vocal and instrumental solos as well as choral num- bers. The club members attend concerts and other musical presentations. This year those members expressing an interest in operatic performances attended produc- tions of the Metropolitan Opera Com- pany. 64 PSYCHOLOGY CLUB The Psychology Club exists for those who wish to further their interest in psy- chology. Early this year Mr. Shapiro demonstrated Pavlov ' s classical condi- tioning on a machine developed by a member of the Physical Science Depart- ment. Some members prepared psycho- logical questionnaires to be given to all the students of the college. Other mem- bers were scheduled to take personality inventories and aptitude tests during the month of October. Trips were made to the Fernald school in Waltham, Boston State Hospital, and guidance centers around Boston. In the latter part of the year the Club engaged guest speakers from the Psychology Department, as well as from outside the college. Mr. Shapiro, the club adviser, and the club members had an active and profita- ble year. 65 DRAMA CLUB Once each year Broadway comes to Boston State for a short time. During this period the members of the Drama Club put on their annual major production. In the years 1961-1965 the student body has enjoyed such productions as, Blithe Spirit, All My Sons, The Importance of Being Earnest, and The Curious Savage. When the members are not involved in the major production they take part in various other activities. They often present one act plays for the student body during club hour. At other times different aspects of technique and interpretation are discussed at the meet- ings. The Class of ' 65 has been well represented in the Drama Club during their college years. In production, administration, and acting their effort and time has been very generously given. They have left their mark as an example to follow. Possibly future thespians may come from the Class of ' 65. 66 | 39 B ' ' 1 a l fe 67 LECTURE SOCIETY Organized in the spring of 1962 the Lecture Society was founded in order to bring to the college, speakers from every field of en- deavor. In the fall of 1962 it presented Gordon D. Hall, a stalwart crusader against bigotry. Mr. Hall discussed Hate Literature, its ori- gin and effect. Later in that college year, Hans Conried delivered a variety of dramatic readings. In a similar vein was Basil Rathbone who presented a program which emphasized excerpts from Shake- speare. In the academic year 1963-1964 Louis E. Lomax spoke on the problems of integration and the forces behind the Negro revolt. Sergio Rojas, Castro ' s former ambassador to the United Kingdom also appeared during that year. This year the Lecture Society pre- sented the Honorable Tran Van Dinh, Dr. Peter Viereck, and re- nowned anthropologist. Dr. Ashley Montagu. Van Dinh, former Act- ing Ambassador from Viet Nam to the United States, spoke of the war in his native land. Dr. Viereck discussed Conservatism and Pseudo-Conservatism in American History and Culture. Finally, Dr. Ashley Montagu presented his controversial lecture on The Natural Superiority of Women. The Lecture Society has been a definite asset to college life in that it has fostered intellectual growth outside of the classroom. Vance Packard 68 Tran Van Dinh Basil Rathbone Louis E. Lomax 69 LITERARY CLUB Under the direction of President Joyce McCarthy and Secretary Christine Cuneo, this year ' s Literary Club has pre- sented an informative program for all in- terested students. Members discussed such books as Kahlil Gibran ' s The Prophet, Mary Mc- Carthy ' s The Group, and Eugene O ' Neill ' s A Touch of the Poet. As a fol- low-up to the last discussion club mem- bers attended a theater party at the Charles Playhouse at which O ' Neill ' s play was presented. Lectures by Mr. Gormley and Dr. Marnell rounded out a well-prepared program. 70 SPECTR UM Now in its third year, the college liter- ary magazine has proven to be an excel- lent outlet for all of our budding authors, poets, and artists. The publication features original sto- ries, poems, and humor, as well as stu- dent photography and art work. Respon- sible for coordinating the various phases of the magazine was Patricia Daly, Edi- tor for the 1964-1965 Spectrum. The literary magazine has played an important role in our undergraduate years, and it is hoped that in the future Spectrum will reach even greater hori- zons. 71 CHALKDUST The purpose of Chalkdust is to communicate college news and to convey every aspect of college life through pictures and print. It gives the students accurate coverage of all college events — SGA de- velopments, scholastic advances, and social affairs. To the staff falls not only the burden of gathering the news but also that of producing an informative and enjoyable newspaper. The staff this year was headed by Editor John Harvey, who was assisted by News Editor June Zalewski, Sports Editor Lawrence Menovich, Business Manager Bob Hilliard, Features Editor Dan Kelliher, Chief Photographer Marty Kullen, and Rewrite Editor Karen McLaughlin. These people have often worked long and late hours, often to find their work unappreciated by many members of the student body. However, it has been through the efforts of these staff members that the student body has been able to keep abreast of school activi- ties. 72 73 74 75 LAMPAS Lampas ' 65 is the result of many hours of work done by a dedicated and ambitious staff. Groundwork for the yearbook began in the spring of Junior year when pictures of Junior Week were taken by photographers from Vantine ' s. Dur- ing the summer the photography staff headed by Carol John contacted all mem- bers of the class about their senior pictures. Carol, Acrivi Galatis, Marilyn Hagerty, Jane King, and Maureen Sullivan spent a hectic summer tracking down those seniors who had not yet had their pictures taken. In September the literary staff took over, working on senior write-ups, club reports, and the class essay and poem. Co-editors Val Cadegan and Marsha Friel were most efficient in collecting and arranging all written material for the book. During the college year Arthur Stewart, aided by Bob Berlo, could often be seen snapping pictures of seniors in interesting poses ' Working with these pictures, the senior photographs, and the literary material, Pat Devine, Mary Lou Petrelli, and Marie Saunders created interesting and balanced layouts. In preparing the candid section at the beginning of the book, Frank Foley lent a helping hand by writing the copy for this section. The final consignment of the yearbook to be sent to Keller Publishers was the athletic section compiled by Wally Flynn. Bill Callahan, Business Manager, handled all financial transactions for the book. The efforts of all staff members were coordinated by Editor-in-Chief Lucille Marchant, and faculty adviser Dr. William Kenney. Many innovations have been incorporated in the 1965 Lampas in order to provide the Class with a treasured reminder of their college years. 76 77 f VOLUNTEER SERVICE BUREAU There is a destiny that makes us brothers: None goes his way alone: All that we send into the lives of others Comes back into our own. Edwin Markham 80 81 Service for Others is the underlying principle of the volunteers of State Col- leg e at Boston. Since its establishment in I960, the VSB has sent out 1,262 student volunteers. These students have given more than 60,000 hours of volun- teer work to 114 different agencies. The agencies include the following: YMCA, YWCA, YMHA, Settlements Houses, Girls ' and Boys ' Clubs, municipal recreation departments, health and welfare agencies, schools for the blind, associations for the emotionally and mentally disturbed, reception-detention centers, hospitals, and religious organizations. The VSB has now been in operation for nine semesters. In its seventh semester the VSB experienced 1000 percent growth. This phenomenal increase in participa- tion is due to the sincere interest, dedication, and capable leadership of the faculty adviser. Miss DeAngelis, and the Executive Board. This year the VSB initiated a workshop for volunteers which provided instruction in arts and crafts, informal dramatics and story telling, sports and games, rhythm and dance. The satisfaction one gets from being a volunteer can never be expressed ver- bally; it can only be experienced. One donates time but this time becomes a valuable experience. With its principle of Service for Others and with the spirit of the volunteer, the Volunteer Service Bureau will continue to serve the college, community, and state. 82 hM 1 1 m ' M ' ' - VI r !• 3L • B Ik WOMEN ' S RECREATION ASSOCIATION An explanation of what WRA means to the women students at Boston State can only be superficial at best. It is heard in the cheerleader ' s yell, seen in the flushed but excited faces of the women ' s basketball team, and felt by the spirited individuals who participate in WRA. The WRA program is constructed so that it may reach every student. The effectiveness of this program may be seen through the eyes of the individual who likes to spend her afternoons practicing golf or tennis swings, finding the bull ' s eye in archery, shouting touche as she drives her foil home to score in fencing, or acquiring the poise and skill of Danish gymnastics. Activity of mind and body found in basketball, coed volleyball, and softball allows the student opportunity to participate with full vigor in an exciting schedule of competition. Meeting people from other colleges is an experience which invites laughter, enthusiasm, and the warmth of friendship. Special events: Splash parties, when all you see are bobbing white-capped heads afloat upon a setting of green chlorophyll. Playdays and sport nights, where friend- ships found in laughter ' s brightness linger long after. Cookouts that bring the quiet of the fall woods and end with voices blending in the darkness of an early night- fall. The Banquet, a final time when friends unite and recognition is given to deserving individuals, to those who have played the game well. WRA ' s goal is to serve Boston State as an influential instrument which aids in the development and guidance of the young women of the college. And every year a new team works hard to score, to achieve that goal by means of an adequate program designed to reach every student in some way. But the WRA offers more than enjoyment, fun, and the warmth of friendship; for it is more than a game, a thought or a feeling. It is all of these, but so much more. 84 8S HILLEL Boston S t a t e ' s Hillel foundation seeks to in- crease the spiritual growth of Jewish students by offer- ing a program of religious, cultural, and social activi- ties. Our Hillel is a counci- lorship of the Boston Uni- versity Hillel foundation so that members here are able to attend all functions of the Boston University Hil- lel House. Operating with its own officers, Boston State ' s Hil- lel provides a rewarding experience for all Jewish students. 86 NEWMAN CLUB The Newman Club of 19 6 4-1965 successfully completed the four phases of Newman activity — reli- gious, educational, spirit- ual, and social action. Some of these successful activities have been First Friday Masses, a Catechist training program, and a Christmas party for under- privileged children. The members of this club derive personal satis- faction in furthering their faith and developing a stronger relationship with God. GREEK ORTHODOX CLUB The Orthodox Student Organization at Boston State has a two-fold purpose — one, purely spiritual, the other social. Although the club is made up of different nationalities and ethnic groups, orthodoxy itself is uni- versal in its outlooks and objectives. This club tries to make known to every member the teachings and principles of the Orthodox Church. The members study Church history, the Sacraments, reli- gious practices, and discuss current ecumenical move- ments. Since the club at Boston State is affiliated with the New England Federation of College Orthodox Stu- dents (NEFCOS), the members here often meet with students from other colleges. Social activities also serve to strengthen religious bonds and are well attended by the Orthodox students of Boston State College. PROTESTANT STUDENT ASSOCIATION The purpose of the Protestant Student Association is the development of student fellowship, and the discus- sion of problems of common interest, whether per- sonal, local, or national in scope. Differences in religious beliefs, which are many among Protestants, are discussed and clarified so that each member will be able to understand the feelings and ideals held by others. Although it is mainly an association for Protestant students on campus, anyone is welcome to come to the meetings and to join in the discussions. Activities for the year include the annual Halloween party, the Thanksgiving social, the Christmas party for needy children, and a theater party. In addition to the discussions during Religious Hour and the various social functions, speakers are invited to discuss topics concerned with religion and college life. 89 Athletics have grown rapidly during our under- graduate years. Through new teams, coaches, and traditions Boston State has gained much public recog- nition. 91 p. .„. JL-. ! Cross country, track, hockey, wrestling, and boxing have been impor- tant additions to our ath- letic program. These sports, along with baseball and basketball, have prompted an exciting es- prit de corps. 93 BASKETBALL Jungle Jim Loscutoff found the going a little rough his first year. His hoop squad led by Captain Leo Hig- gins finished the season with a record of 8 wins and 12 losses. Beaver Buckley and Al Golobski were the only players who scored consistently in double figures. Paul Jackson played very well, along with Bob Chew, who joined the team second semester. A highlight of the season was Buckley ' s game against Bridgewater on January 9th. Going into the game, he had scored a total of 976 points. He scored 24 points against Bridgewater to become the first 1000 point scorer in the history of State basketball. The suc- cesses the Warrior icemen achieved brought public at- tention to State ' s athletic program. Sparked by the high- scoring first line of Bob Quinn, Wayne Petrovek, and Frank Kelley, the team finished the season with a 14-3 record. The Quinn-Petrovek duo, and the combined efforts of Frank Kelley and Paul Donnelly provided the Warriors with the nation ' s highest scoring line. Bob Quinn, probably the finest hockey player in the area, scored 32 goals and assisted on 35 others for a total of 67 points. The success of the team also resulted from strong defensive play. Time after time, Captain Suther- land broke up opposition rushes, while still managing to place third in team scoring. In the nets freshman Paul Schneekloth excelled, allowing only 35 goals in the games in which he appeared, and making 276 saves. The finale of a successful season was the victory over Salem State on February 28th when BSC captured the Codfish Bowl Trophy. BSC OPP. 17 NEW HAVEN 1 13 HOLY CROSS 1 9 NICHOLS 2 7 UNIV. Since we only lost Duke Maloney from last year ' s team, we couldn ' t help but be stronger. We ' re stronger where it counts, up the middle. Vince Camillio in centerfield, Tom Robillard behind the plate, and a host of fine pitchers, combined with the holdovers led by Co-captains Paul RappoH and Jim Melzar should result in a most successful 1965 season. 1964 SEASON BSC OPP. 4 BRIDGEWATER 3 6 FITCHBURG 3 WESTFIELD 11 4 SALEM 11 2 SALEM 13 7 LOWELL 4 7 STONEHILL 12 6 SOUTHERN CONN. 11 3 WORCESTER 6 WORCESTER 7 3 PLYMOUTH 12 1 STONEHILL 13 13 BRIDGEWATER 2 6 LOWELL 3 1 CENTRAL CONN. 4 5 CENTRAL CONN. 7 •■' ■' fr ' s ' r . In football, Wolf Larsen ' s quarterbacking was the prime factor in his team ' s winning of the championship. Larsen ' s Lardheads defeated a fine Nemo team under Ron Areglado ' s le ader- ship. In the basketball tourney the Has Beens coached by Leo Hlggins dominated the play. Pacing the Has Beens was Lou Bianchi, Jack Ryan, and Don Cotter. Although they dominated play, they had to fight against formidable opposition. The Little Knicks led by Duba DeBellis and Art Anderson, the Diddy Boppers whose loss ended an era in intramural play, and the Shedits with Butch Chardavoyne and Bill Flynn extended the Has Beens to the limit. Basketball saw the return of Dave Jackson to the court, but missed the Dappa Rappa ' s bombs from mid-court. 110 Ill FROM THE CLASS OF ' 65 ESSAY Today, as in all centuries, there is a constant searching for knowledge. No one will ever attain the ultimate in knowledge, but it is only human and proper that we continue the quest as those in the past have done. Throughout years of schooling, and especially through the past four years, each of us who has now earned the title of Senior has been contributing his efforts to this never-ending quest. And now we have reached the stage where we are to go out into the world in an attempt to disseminate what we have learned to those around us. We are a privileged group, for we are being given the opportunity to work with the children of this country. It is our duty to enable the youngsters of today to continue the search for knowledge tomorrow. But we must do more than merely aid them in the development of their ability; we must work to instill in our pupils a real thirst for learning. We must do more than merely impart information; we must give encouragement and spread an enthusiasm for the acquiring of new ideas. We must do more than teach from books; we must create an atmosphere conducive to success for each pupil at his particular level. Only if we do all of this can we be considered successful teachers. The task before us is a huge one. How are we, mere youths ourselves, to accomplish it? We can at least begin by applying the learning that we have strug- gled to gain throughout college. For of what value is knowledge unless it is put to use? And so we come to the completion of a cycle. We have struggled to gain knowledge in order to impart it to others, so that they, in turn, may continue the search for knowledge in the future. Let us use our knowledge well and let us not forget to continue the quest ourselves. Geraldine Grosberg 112 POEM As we look into the future that looms Like a huge apparition before us. Where all is hidden and unclear, From out of our inner selves Let us draw certainty and courage. Accustomed to our books and learning, To our quiet routine marked off by bells, Perhaps we have ceased to remember That these years are not the sum — That after this life, comes Life. Let us not go forth fearfully, slowly. Feeling our way with hesitant and timid steps. Let us go boldly out, confident that our efforts Will bring success in many forms: the smile of a child, The tender caress of one beloved, the home serene. Let us not be shaken by criers of doom. By rumors of war, by the dark reaches of the night. Let us remember the power of a teacher. The future is in the classrooms of a free country. It will be shaped by us and by our charges — the Young. Dorothy Canavan SONG Alma Mater, thou hast given Ideals in which we can believe. Those before us long have striven Through the ages to achieve Honor, duty, dedication — Ours in trust to carry on To a future generation In an era yet unborn. Help us to be true exponents Of these concepts held so dear. We shall stand as firm opponents Should an adverse way appear. Intercede and ask a blessing As you send us forth this day With our hearts thy truths confessing. Ever loyal, this we pray. May the paths from your dear portals Lead to goals of priceless worth, As we pass to fellow mortals Gifts that have no bounds on earth. Love, devotion, understanding, Knowledge to enrich mankind. Freedom, peace, and joy unending Alma mater, may we find. I feel that the excellent background and preparation given us by our instructors will help us to choose wisely, both now and in the future. We shall carry away from our college years many warm memories of friends and shared experiences. Our time at Boston State has been filled with hard work, but we have enjoyed these years — and enjoyment is certainly one of the goals of life. A sage once said, There are tw o things to aim at in life: first, to get what you want, and second, to enjoy what you get. Only the wisest among us achieve the second. As we look to the future, let us take the advice of the sage. Let us work hard to achieve our goals, and then let us develop the wisdom to know how to enjoy what we have gained. BRUCE C.
