LIBER ACTORUM CLASS OF 1989 THE 1989 YEARBOOK EDITORS Megan McCarthy Matthew Klein Laura Meegan Head Photographers Advisor Monia Giuliano Armando Loconte Helen Woo 1 Table of Contents A dL DEDICATION Michael Contompasis ’57, Head Master of Boston Latin School, has been named the winner of the 1988 Graduate of the Year Award. 1988 marks the year in which the award has been renamed. Previously, outstanding achievement by a graduate was honored under the title “Man of the Year,” but the Association trustees took note of the distinguished accomplishments of the women graduates of the School (three of whom have already been elected to the Board of Trustees), and decided to retitle the award. The first recipient of the renamed honor is the person who has done so much to steer the School’s course through all the changes of the last several years. The latest in the long list of memorable Head Masters of the Boston Latin School is a previous recipient of the Lee J. Dunn Award for service to Boston Latin School and its Association, and he thus becomes only the fifth dual winner in the history of the two honors. A graduate of Boston University with a Master’s degree in Education from Boston State College, he did further graduate work in the field recently during his sabbatical year at Harvard. Under his leadership, Boston Latin School has continued to set the standard for secondary school education in the United States. The School has continued to succeed at such a high level that it is often easy to forget that the accomplishments of the last fifteen years have come against a backdrop of enormous social changes and tremendous financial difficulties. The selection committee also noted the sensitivity and kindness which Mr. Contompasis has shown to minority students. The Class of 1989 endorses the Graduate of the Year award to Mr. Contompasis; whether we liked it or not, he pushed us all to succeed. HEADMASTER’S MESSAGE The accomplishments of your class are an indication of the tremendous importance that you as students place upon acquiring the educational experience needed for fu- ture success. Our goal at Boston Latin School continues to be the preparation of young men and women to become educated and worthy members of our society. You have the opportunity and the means to make a constructive contribution to the im- provement of mankind. It will not be easy to accomplish your goals without a continuing devotion to duty and a continuing dedi- cation to hard work. You have been given the means to succeed. What you do with your lives will be an indication of how well you’ve learned the lessons taught at Boston Latin School. Much has been asked of you during your stay with us. Often you may have questioned the value of your expe- rience here. However, in future years, you will look back on these years as a strong and lasting foundation. A new generation of leaders must be founded amongst your ranks, leaders who care not only for themselves, but also for the public good. I encourage you to meet and to solve the challenges of the future. Your success is a source of pride to your parents, teachers and especially to me, your headmaster. May you experience happiness and joy in the years that follow. Good luck class of 1989. May God bless you! 6 Secretary Mrs. McCarthy Secretaries Mrs. St. Cyr, Ms. Skehan, Ms. DiCaesare CLASSICS I confiscated an “adult” magazine from one of my seniors, but An adult magazine? Yes quite true. They are actually de- rived from the early Greek tradition of celebrating the human form. Let’s get to the bottom of this now. We have to find out who took it. Oh yes they were! 14 If they listened to me, they know some good pickup lines. From me they learned the value of hard work. And from me the importance of hair style. 15 MATHEMATICS Our seniors are finally graduating. I remember my high school years with fondness. Me too. I was quite the athlete. Gee. that must have been a long time ago. With these eyes 1 was known as a Well I must admit, I didn’t do too badly myself, ladies’ man even then. Now wait a minute, that must have been a real long time ago. 16 Don’t talk so fast, Wellings, you’re no spring chicken yourself. I was a teen model for GQ. Numbers were always my best friends. Just admit it, you two were nerds! Yeah, a lot more. Those really There was more to high school than were the days, math. 17 MODERN LANGUAGES Does anyone want to sign up for my next trip? Spain is always a fine choice this time of year. Oh, trips are such fun. Where should we go? Yeah, Spain! Muchas Senoritas! No one is going on any trip if I can do anything about it. What an adventure this is going to be! Wait a minute, didn’t you find it in your suitcase when you got home? I’m not going to Spain. Last time I was there my purse was stolen. 19 — ummni SCIENCE Hey guys, what do you think about having a talent show? This crew? Talent? Are you kidding? Aw, come on, — I can wiggle my ears.
