DURANTE In Mcmonani RarcK has a community been as saddened by the death of one of its own as that of Bostin Latin School was this year by the loss of William V. Durante, Head of the Mathematics Department. He was loved and respected by that community, and he loved it in return both as student and teacher in a long association spanning nearly forty years. Those who taught with him, those who were taught by him, everyone who knew him, recognized him to be one of the greatest of teaehers and one of the finest of human beings. He is truly irreplaceable. We have already begun to experience how difficult it shall be to eontinue without him. We shall miss him, but we are heartened by the marvelous legacy of memories he left, memories in which we all share, for he was friend to us all. .And so it is with deep feelings of pleasure and sorrow mixed that we dedicate this yearbook to the memory of William V. Durante, teacher and friend. IN DEDICATION TO DIANE RICCI The cover of the 1988 Yearbook was de- signed by Diane Ricci of the Boston Latin School Art Department. With great appre- ciation and gratitude the Yearbook Staff thanks her and acknowledges Ms. Ricci’s in- terpretation of the symbols that appear on the cover design: 1) The circle symbolizes the continuity of the Latin Tradition. 2) The square represents the book of knowl- edge. 3) The triangle symbolizes both the end of an era at Latin and the beginning of a new era of pursuits and goals. Diane Ricci In 1 965 Diane Ricci made history at Boston Latin School when she became the first woman to be assigned as a teacher to America’s oldest public school, an honor she always cherished. In 1967, along with two other women, Diane Ricci became the first woman to be permanent ly appointed to Boston Latin School. Though Boston Latin offered its students a rich liberal arts education, it was deficient in the most obvious of the arts: painting and drawing. Mrs. Ricci inaugurated our first art program which has flourished since its inception. In 1971, to meet the needs of our many gifted students, Mrs. Ricci invited the Advanced Placement to Boston Latin School, offering to our most talented art students the opportunity to excel in a competitive and challenging course. At the same time, Mrs. Ricci, an active and life member of the Museum of Fine Arts, created a close and enriching relationship between Boston Latin School and the Museum Art School: thus, our students have had access to the finest art instruction available in the Boston area. Always sensitive to students’ aesthetic requirements, Mrs. Ricci recognized the practical needs of the students of the eighties: in 1979, she introduced a new course. Architectural Design, implemented for those students interested in technological fields such as engineering, interior design, and architecture. For her inestimable contribution to our school and her twenty-three years of dedication to our students, we thank Mrs. Ricci wholeheartedly. HEADMASTER’S MESSAGE The accomplishments of your class are an indication of the tremendous importance that you as students place upon acquiring the educational experience needed for future success. Our goal at Boston Latin School con- tinues to be the preparation of young men and women to become educated and worthy members of our society. You have the opportunity and the means to make a constructive contribution to the improvement of man- kind. It will not be easy to accomplish your goals without a continuing devotion to duty and a continuing ded- ication to hard work. You have been given the means to succeed. What you do with your lives will be an in- dication of how well you’ve learned the lessons taught at Boston Latin School. Much has been asked of you during your stay with us. Often you may have questioned the value of your experience here. However, in future years, you will look back on these years as a strong and lasting foundation. A new generation of leaders must be founded amongst your ranks, leaders who care not only for themselves, but also for the public good. I encourage you to meet and to solve the challenges of the future. Your success is a source of pride to your parents, teachers and especially to me, your headmaster.
