Though the school ' s location and facade may have changed from time to time, Boston Latin ' s long tradition of high academic quality has remained the same. The famous educators, members of the clergy, statesmen and achievers in all fields whom Boston Latin School may claim as alumni owe their accomplishments and fame, in part, to this school. Therefore, as we, the members of the 350th class, prepare to move on and follow in the footsteps of such worthy men and women, we pay humble tribute to our Alma Mater, Boston Latin School. Contampasis TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1985: I congratulate you, the class of 1985, for the truly outstanding achievement and honor that you have brought to yourself and your Alma Mater. Your dedication and devotion to duty have been exemplary. The years that you have spent here may often have seemed long, arduous, and frustrating. Many of you have not yet realized the value of the Latin School experience. The exposure to a stiff curriculum, the hours spent in preparation of your daily work, the strict adherence to rules and regulations have provided you with the necessary background to further your personal and academic careers. You have been given the means to succeed. A great deal now depends upon how well you apply the lessons learned at Boston Latin School. Be ever mindful of your responsibilities to your parents, your school and your community. Be especially loyal to your Alma Mater. Aid her in every way so that she may con- tinue to provide your successors with the opportunities that you have received. Symptoms: In early stages of the disease, the afflicted individual will show slight signs of restlessness and lapses of attention during class, with periods of sleeping bouts and daydreaming, not to mention s taring out windows. As the malady progresses, the individual begins to lose motor control over the upper limbs, due to gradual neurological deterioration of the cerebral cortex. This results in the inability to write out homework or even concentrate. The individual soon loses interest in school. In severe cases, the patient is either too weak to get out of bed or will get to school but sleep through all his classes, however, he becomes extremely hyperactive as the calendar approaches May 22nd. Manifestations of this condition begin during January, though there are reported cases starting as early as September. Etiology: Thee are no proven theories as to the causes of this widespread condition. It has been theorized, however, that this disease may originate from a unique virus that flourishes in the confines of school paper. This virus is currently being examined by top medical researchers and doctors. Several discoveries have already been made: the virus releases an unidentified chemical that acts as some type of pheromone — a biological chemical attractant — that attracts certain human body chemicals located just under the skin surface. This attraction evidently stimulates skin pores to open and allows the virus to pass into the victim’s nervous system. It has also been found that this condition is extremely contagious, but appears to affect only seniors in high school. Treatment: Fortunately, senioritis is not incurable. Over the years, two treatments have been found to be 98% effective. 1) Complete rest and relaxation. It is believed that stress stimulates the virus into reproduction. By lowering the incidence of stress, the individual’s natural defense system will develop more effective antibodies against the virus. 2) Abstinence from homework. Since the virus originates in school paper, it would be logical to remove the irritant from the presence of the individual. The less that he is exposed to the virus, the more likely it is that he will get well. Both treatments will result in 100% recovery in about three months (depending upon how long it is until May 22nd from the first day of treatment. Early detection will bring the best results; if this condition is left untreated, the individual will end his school year in an attitude of boredom, and then elation as he says farewell to the school and to his teachers for the last time. 36 A “get-lost” attitude.
