Herbert L. Peterson 1938-1981 You have given so much of youself. You have shared with so many your talents and have devoted your years to enriching the lives of others. You have graced the lives of so many of our students with the gift of music. We appreciate and love you for your sincere dedication which will always be remembered and sadly missed. And Paul A. Carell 1964-1982 A member of the Class of 1982, Paul A. Carell was a friend to all who knew him. He shared his smiles with us and made us laugh. He possessed a magnetic personality that has left a lasting impression on everyone. We, the class of 1982, will always remember him. We will miss the joys he brought and will always consider him as a fellow member of our class. 5 Michael G. Contompasis Headmaster Headmaster ' s Address Forty-seven years ago, at the 300th anniversary of our school ' s founding, the philosopher George Santayana wrote the following about his alma mater: In spite of all revolutions and all the pressure of business and all the powerful influences inclining America to live in contemptuous ignorance of the rest of the world, and especial- ly of the past, the Latin School, supported by the people of Boston, has kept the embers of traditional learning alive, at which the humblest rush-light might always be lighted; has kept the highway clear for every boy to the professions of theology, law, medicine, and teaching, and a window open to his mind from these times to all other times and from this place to all other places. Our nation desperately needs the vitality and enthusiasm of its young people. A new generation of leaders must be found from amongst your ranks; leaders who care more for the public good than for their own narrow self interests. For, as it has been so clearly stated by the columnist, Walter Lippmann, Leaders are the custo- dians of a nation ' s ideals, of the beliefs it cherishes, of its permanent hopes, of the faith which makes a nation out of a mere aggregation of individuals. I encourage you to meet and hopefully to solve the challenges of the next five decades. 6 -r . ' s head football coach, Paul Costello. After a dismal season and a break in the 15 year winning streak on Thanksgiving Day, the coach is optimistic for the future. Now, the oldest schoolboy rivalry, Latin vs. English High School, will return to being a challenge. Never- theless, there is a reason for optimism. Beginning next year, the team will be moving to a new divi- sion and into the Dual County League, and increased alumni funds should help the financial situa- tion. Thus, we the graduating class of 1982 wish the Wolfpack good luck. Sweeping through the Boston District I League with a perfect 14-0 record, they em- barked on the post-season sectionals at Brockton seeded 1. The finals were a display of high skill, competitive volleyball. Although Latin lost in a grueling best out of five game match, there was no doubt that the contest could have gone either way. Contributing tremendously to this fine display of volleyball were Seniors Nancy Andrea, Dina Bloom, Mary MacKinnon, and Judy Tom. All of them have been playing for our school since Class Five. The team wishes them the best of luck next year. They will surely be missed. Coach Steve Cohen would like to congratulate all the members of the team for a tremendously successful season. 97 GIRLS ' SWIM TEAM 1st Row: Gould, Garland, Blackmer, McCarthy, Collins, T. Girls’ Swim Team Previously undefeated for six years, the Girl ' s Swim team moved on to compete against many of the biggest and most competitive teams in Massachusetts. Talent and intensive stroke work pro- duced a group strong in all events. Captain Ellen Stranberg contributed great- ly to the strength of the team. The other seniors, Beth Nicholson, Joanne O ' Sullivan, and Maura Kennedy, showed fine performances. The strong competition throughout the season indicated that the Girls ' Swim Team had impressive talent as well as depth. 98 BOYS ' SWIM TEAM The boys ' swim team, under captains Zawawi, Grady, and Horn, did well considering the tough suburban competition. Senior Dave Bohan also contributed with some fine performances during the season. Since only four seniors are leaving, next year ' s team should be strong under the coaching of Ann-Maire Yelmokas and Bruce Conley. 1st Row: Bohan, Zawawi (cpt.), Grady (cpt.), Horn (cpt.). 2nd Row: Coach Ann Yelmokas, Saber, Shia, Koch, Cappola, Nolan, Fitzgerald, Zawawi, Charbonnier, Radosta i 99 GIRLS ' INDOOR TRACK The Girls ' Indoor Track Team had an outstanding season this year. In the 1 and 2 miles city cham- pionships were won by Paul Sanislawzyk and Ken Fleming. 1st Row: Creighton, Scapiccio, Deedle, Glennon, Murphy, Buddy, Mahoney, Keobane, DiChiara. 2nd Row: Robinson, Shulman, Jarrett, Fitzgerald, Benedetti, Jacobs, Lembo, Amsler, Finnegan, Headley. 3rd Row: Nevins, Ferzoco, Mitchell, Lewis, Fennell, Matulis, Teichner, Owens, Teeming, Lee, Davis, LaBelle, Coach Evans. 101 GIRLS ' BASKETBALL TEAM 102 This year ' s women ' s varsity basketball team showed that it will be a powerful force next year. A young team that has shown hustle as well as a winning attitude has nothing to be ashamed of. The team will be losing two seniors, Yvonne Nelson and Robin Gately. Coach Saunders looks for- ward to a successful season next year with the return of five juniors. The class of 1982 wishes the team the best of luck next year! Girls ' Basketball Team 1st Row: England, George, Crofty (Capt.), Nelson (capt.). Prior, Flynn. 2nd Row: Coach Saunders, Sanchez, Feeney, Gately, Austin, Patrick, Mulkhern, McLaughlin, Baveneau, Gould Due to tough competition and a young and inexperi- enced team, the Wolfpack had a miserable season with a record of 3-15. Despite our record, no one gave up. Everyone came to practice, and towards the end of the year we were seeing im- provements. There were only two seniors, Brian Allston and Todd Venter, and the leading scorers on the team, as well as in the city, were Dickens Mathieu, Jim Bennet, and Jeremy Stuger. Soccer Aggregation completed yet another season of fast, colorful violence, managing key victories over West Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, and East Boston, due in large part to the All-City goal keeping of Ricardo Sanchez. The seniors of ' 82 wish future squads all the success they may find and would like to thank Mr. Evans for the many enjoyable games, scrimmages, and practices. 104 HOCKEY TEAM UNIVERSITY 1st Row: Smith, Capo, Kelly, Griffin, McDonald, Giordano, Settana, Walsh 2nd Row: Canavan, Olevitz, McDonald, Fahey, O ' Connor, Donovan, Greaney, Gavdin, Ziegler, McKenna, Morris, Coach Dave Coleman. 105 What do you mean, Take the lens cap off? We light our lamps for atmosphere And hang our hopes on chandeliers We ' re going wrong, we ' re gaining weight We ' re sleeping long and far too late And so it ' s time to change our ways But I ' ve loved these days. Now as we indulge in things refined We hide our hearts from harder times A string of pearls A foreign car But we can only go so far On caviar and cabernet We drown our doubts in dry champagne And soothe our souls with fine cocaine. I don ' t know why I even care We get so high and get nowhere We ' ll have to change our jaded ways But I ' ve loved these days. So before we end and then begin We ' ll drink a toast to how it ' s been A few more hours to be complete A few more nights on satin sheets. A few more times that I can say I ' ve loved these days. — Billy Joel at mu
