Mr. Powers has prohahh’ collected ern)u h unused sick days to take a tw ' entv year vacation. I ' ntortunately. this year that is exactly what he did. Mr. Powers retired in earh ' December, leaving behind thirty years of teaching. lbs crs.itihi fills a page of the Who ' s Wht at Boston Latin School. For the past twenty-five years he has coached the city ' s most successful swimming team. He has tilled roles as ba.seball. track and sailing coach. Mr. Powers even pinch-hit tor Mr. Mosher during his extended absence this ear. Additionally, as business advisor he has handled the ever troublesome financial atfairs of the Liher Actorurn. The Class ot 1981 and the entire Latin School community wish Mr. Powers a happy and prosperous retirement. . . . William Powers sea Dedicated to Mr. Miller can look back upon a long and diverse career at Latin School. Almost forty years ago, he taught the incoming students a variety of subjects: science, history and even physical education. He then devoted himself to the classics, showing an enthusiasm and love for Latin too much lacking today. The seniors of the Class of 1981 will best remember Mr. Miller for his stint as Acting Headmaster during the school ' s most troubled period. We thank him for his devotion to Boston Latin School and to us. . . . David Miller 1 , 5 Headmaster ' s Message The accomplishments of your class are an indication of the tremendous importance that you, as students, place upon acquiring the educational experience needed lor future success. You have maintained a dedication and interest in the realization of your goals at a time when it is common to downgrade our insistence upon academic excellence. Our goal at Boston Latin School continues to be the preparation of young men and women to become educated and worthy members of our society. You have the opportunity and the means to make a constructive contribution to the improve- ment of mankind. It will not be easy to accomplish your goals without a continuing dedication to hard work and a con- tinuing devotion to duty. Every freedom, every right, and every privilege have their prices and their corresponding duties without which they cannot be enjoyed. You have been given the means to succeed. What you do with your lives will be an indication of how well you have learned the lessons taught at Boston Latin School. Much has been asked of you dur- ing your stay with us. Often you may have questioned the value of your experience here. The fact that you have com- pleted your education indicates the importance you place upon completing our rigorous course of study. As graduates you have earned the recognition and respect of those that have preceded you. Recognize that with maturity comes the responsibility to ensure that your Alma Mater continues as a viable institution of learning. You must support us in every way so that we may continue to provide your successors with the same opportunities that you have received. Anything less than maximum effort on your part will diminsh the heritage and tradition that you now enjoy as graduates. Your success as a class is a source of pride to your teachers, your parents and especially to your Headmaster. We will always remember you and hope that you will continue to share with us your future thoughts and successes. May you experience happiness and joy in the years that follow. May God bless you all. Those of us that entered this school as sixies” were told to look to the person to the right of us and to the left of us: at least one of those persons would not make it through the six years. Our initial feelings were of nervous disbelief and intimidation. This year was one of adaptation and new friendships. Over the next tour years, we developed a stronger feeling of fellowship] and school participation. Memorable events included the sophomore] class trip and the junior prom. When senior year finally arrived, we were at the top. The year began with the pressure of college applications and interviews. Thanksgiving and Christmas flew by and the pressures eased as we received our college acceptances. Suddenly our Latin School careers have ended. We all know where we will be going next year, and everything for us at B.L.S. is over. During our years in this school, we have been taught many varied subjects from Latin and math to physics, Greek and art. Much of this knowledge will be forgotten; however, retained will be our views of morality, honesty and justice. Although some of us may disagree with the philosophy and strict discipline of the Latin School. 1 do not think that one of us can truthfully say that he regretted attending Latin School, or that he did not receive a worthwhile education. 1 think it is extremely important to the vitality of Boston Latin School that we support our Alma Mater in the years to come. Some of us will be going off to college; others will be working at jobs. No matter what we do, let us remember this; the future is ours to do with it what we will. Perhaps some of the experiences that we have had during our years at Latin School will help us as we start new lives for ourselves. The Class of 1981 has created a number of precedents. First was the election of the first woman President of the Senior Class, Anne DiNatale, since Boston Latin was founded in 1635. Boston Latin didn ' t become coeducational until 1971, but in that span of ten years, the abilities of women in our society have been recognized. Anne ' s election was tangible evidence that women can be accepted leaders in a society previously dominated by men; in our case, most of us voted for Anne on the basis of her leadership potential and past accomplishments, not because she was a woman. In addition to that, the class valedictorian is Paula Touliopoulos. Jane Chung, the best mathematician in our school and one of the best in the nation, is president of the National Honor Society. For school spirit, we have our own Mary Callanan masquerading as wolt mascot. We seniors have had fun, too. Those who went on the class trip to Bermuda will remember not only the inflated prices of food and souvenirs, but also recall the exotic setting, the rented mopeds and cars, the houses with the maid, and the fun of just being away from school and parents. Sign-out day: May 19, 1981. No one needs an explanation for those words. The corridors on the first floor are filled with wandering seniors, all chatting about this day. On the other floors, there is silence, relieved only by the rustling of papers, the reading of the daily bulletin by teachers, and the ticking of the clock. It is C” schedule, a day for the seniors. Suddenly, the silence is broken as masses of seniors climb the stairs and stomp the hallways as we search for our subject teachers, intent on getting their signatures on 261 orange cards. Elation is almost tangible as we seniors triumphantly march back to our homerooms our cards boldly held before us, and wait for the final dismissal at 9:00 A.M. The bell rings, cheers are heard, farewells are made, and finally, we leave, forever. Some of us hurry out, eager to get away, on to better things; others slowly saunter out, savoring the knowledge that we are no longer students in high school. 84 MEDICAL REPOR r Subject; senioritis conta iosus. Symptoms: In early stages of the disease, the afflicted individual will show slight signs of restlessness and lapses of attention during class, with periods of sleeping bouts and daydreaming, not to mention staring out windows. As the malady progresses, the individual begins to lose motor control over the upper limbs, due to gradual neurological deterioration of the cerebral cortex. This results in the inability to write out homework or even concen- trate. The individual soon loses interest in school. In severe cases, the patient is either too weak to get out of bed or will get to school but sleep through all his classes; however, he becomes extremely hyperactive as the calendar approaches May 15. Manifestations of this condition begin during January, though there are reported cases starting as early as September. Etiology: There are no proven theories as to the causes of this widespread condition. It has been theorized, however, that this disease may originate from a unique virus that flourishes in the confines of school paper. This virus is currently being examined by top medical researchers and doctors. Several discoveries have already been made: the virus releases an unidentified chemical that acts as some type of pheromone — a biological chemical attractant — that attracts certain human body chemicals located just under the skin surface. This attraction evidently stimulates skin pores to open and allows the virus to pass into the victim ' s nervous system. It has also been found that this condition is extremely contagious, but appears to affect only seniors in high school. Treatment: Fortunately, senioritis is not incurable. Over the years, two treatments have been found to be 98% effective. 1) Complete rest and relaxation. It is believed that stress stimulates the virus into reproduction. By lowering the incidence of stress, the individual ' s natural defense system will develop more effective antibodies against the virus. 2) Abstinence from homework. Since the virus originates in school paper, it would be logical to remove the irritant from the presence of the in- dividual. The less that he is exposed to the virus, the more likely it is that he will get well. Both treatments will result in 100% recovery in about three months (dependeing upon how long it is until May 15) from the first day of treatment. Early detection will bring the best results; if this condition is left untreated, the individual will end his school year in an attitude of boredom, and then elation as he says farewell to the school and to his teachers for the last time. The team qualified for the State Tournament and won its first game against the city cham- pion, Madison Park, with a hard earned 1-0 overtime victory. The championship bid ended, however, with a loss to a strong Needham team. The team was led by Captains Roger Birle ’81 and Ricardo Sanchez ' 82. The captains were aided by veteran seniors Pierre Apollon, Chuck Vadala and Nick Favorito. These players form- ed the nucleus of the team and provided the in- spiration and leadership for this most successful season. 98 99 Football Despite a 3-5 record, the 1980 Wolfpack season can be billed as a successful one. Decimated by the loss of fine players who graduated last year, a small, inexperienced team worked and sweated its way to respectability. Latin opened with a 20-6 loss to Taunton, but then bounced back with three straight shutouts over Tech, Holyoke and Xaverian. The Wolfpack then dropped another two losses to Bridgewater-Raynham and Acton-Boxborough. The team finally got on the winning track when it handily defeated Chelsea 19-0. After two more disappointing losses to St.John ' s and B.C. High, the NX ' oltpack trounced English High on Thanksgiving Day 20-0. denying them a Super- bowl berth. The team, under the leadership of Captain Bob Burke, showed great poise and desire to win. Key players, such as Oscar Weekes, Bar- rando Butler and John Makie, helped make the newly-installed wishbone offense click. Although the record doesn ' t show it, the 1980 Wolfpack season was most successful and gratifying. 100 Cheerleaders I lie Cheerleaders had one of the most rewar- ding and enjoyable seasons everl At the Univer- sity ot Rhode Island, the girls spent four wonderful days at a cheerleading camp spon- sored by the National Cheerleaders ' Associa- tion. Magnani. 2nd ROW; Coach Irons, Ivaska, Castro, O Dea, C .Magnani, McGill, Clifton, Grady. Cross Country The girls’ Cross Country team had a very successful season. They won their second consecutive City Championship by an over- whelming score over their perennial rival Boston Tech. The girls’ team, which started with one girl five years ago, has grown to a strong, competitive group of girls. In the Ci- ty Championship, eight out of the top ten were Latin girls. Paula Alduino, Margaret Warram and Jackie McGill also made the Ci- ty All-Star team. The senior Co-captains Paula Alduino and Margaret Warram, who consistently came in first and second, will be missed. The boys ' team, under the auspices of Coach Irons, had an undefeated record of 7 wins and 0 losses, beating every team in the league by overwhelming scores. They con- tinued this unblemished record outside the city also, collecting wins against such teams as B.C. High and North Quincy. A team comprised of sophomores went on to win the State Sophomore Championship Meet, an honor never achieved before by any Boston team. The team won its second con- secutive City Championship, with seven of its members placing in the top ten. 104 105 i. Swimming The Boston Latin Varsity Swim Team topped oft its 1980-81 season with its eleventh consecutive City Championship. This accomplishment resulted from the fine swimming of Tri-Captains Billy O Callahan, Tim Horan and John Melvin, and the ex- cellent coaching of Mark Thomas. This year ' s 12-0 record in the City League may well be repeated next year since the team is losing only three seniors. 106 107 1st ROW McCarthy, Burke, DiNatale, Barry. 2nd ROW: Feeney, Hannon, Rubenis, Phelan, Quinn, McLaughlin. Swimming The girls ' Swim Team had an impressive season, finishing undefeated in the city league with a 10-0 record. In the City Cham- pionship, Latin placed first in nine of the eleven events and swept first, second and third place in six of these events. For the sixth consecutive year, Boston Latin had earned the title of City Champs. The individuals who qualified for the state sectionals did an outstanding job; Joanne Handy placed seventh in the 100 Breast; Ellen Stranberg placed seventh in the 50 Free and seventh in the 100 Free; and the 400 Free Relay (Callanan, Cosgrove, DiNatale, Stranberg) timed fifth place. The loss of seniors Joanne Handy, Mary Callanan, Anne DiNatale (the Tri-captains), Virginia Smith, Laura Blackmer, Laura Mag- gio and Leslee Shupe will surely be felt next year; however, the returning swimmers should form another powerhouse team. 108 109 Hockey The Hockey Team had a successful 1980-81 season, compiling a 13-0-1 league record and a 16-2-2 overall record. Latin finished first and won another city championship by defeating Boston Tech and Hyde Park in the playoff of the State Tournament in overtime to Taunton in a heartbreaker. 3-2. This year ' s team, which had only three seniors, played its best game in the tournament, showing great determination. Ottensively, the team was led by Rick Ziegler, Shawn Kennedy, Mike Capo and Assistant Cap- tain Mark Linehan. On defense, there were four outstanding players: Rich O ' Connor, Captain, Dan Treanor, Robert Greaney, and John Olevitz. The goalies were John Ladd and Dave McDonnell. Other team members were juniors Steve Fahey, Scott Hoffman, Steve Miragaas and John Canavan; sophomores Joe Morris, Dennis McKenna and Joe Donovan; freshmen Dave Gaudin and Billy McDonald; along with eighth grade goalie Brian Griffin. 110 ft Volleyball This year s volleyball season was the most successful ever. The team ended the season with an 16-0 record, after winning decisive victories over both English and l-mana. Latin entered the State Tournament as the favorite, finishing as runner-up in the northern division and fifth in the state overall. This year ' s team was young, with only two seniors, Co-Captains Annemarie Josoma and Kathie Yanelli, With the great offensive play of Mary MacKinnon, Dina Bloom and Annemarie Josoma, the defensive play of Judy Tom and Nancy Andrea, and the setting of Kathie Yanelli and superstar freshman Ginny Tom, B.L.S. made quite an impressive showing. I 112 BOSTON ' mu 113 i] I Basketball The Latin School Five had a tough season, losing several close games. The final record was 5-8-1. If not the most skillful, the B.L.S. Sailing Team is certainly the most spirited (and wet) team on the Charles River. i T Spring Track With an outstanding record, both the boys ' and girls ' teams dominated the field. Seniors Bob Garland. Rard Horgan, Ray Lee, Margaret Warram, Ann Sorrentino, Paula Alduino and Nancy Barsamian constantly gained points and led younger team members. With the loss of only one senior, Kathie Conley, the team looks forward to another victorious season next year. The team would like to extend its thanks to our novice coach, Mr. Leo Casey. 120 121 Baseball The Baseball Team posted a 16-6 regular season record. The team struggled through the first half of the season with a 7-4 record but came on strong to win 9 of 11 in the se- cond half. The team was led by Captain Joe Kelly (MVP) and Dan Duffy who had an outstanding season at the plate, batting .486. Dave Hanron was the backbone of the pit- ching staff as he posted an 11-3 mark for the season. Others who did a fine job on the mound were Dennis Tobin, Paul Rooney and Shawn Kennedy. After the regular had concluded. Latin entered the E. Mass, division II South Tour- nament. Latin ' s first opponent was Medfield and Latin came out of the slugfest with a 12-8 victory. In the semi-finals, Latin over- came Bishop Connolly with some timely hit- ting and the stalwart pitching of Dave Hanron. By beating Bishop Connolly, Latin advanced to the finals after having been knocked out in the semi-finals the three previous years. In the south sectional final, Latin faced ci- ty foe East Boston, who had yet to lose a game. Dave Hanron started his third game in five days and did a fine job before tiring in the fifth. Eastie, who trailed throughout the game, never gave up, and finally won it in extra innings. The players would like to thank Coach Coleman for doing another fine job with the team and for taking his team to the finals for the first time. ! 122 123 1 I V I f I ■ Ordinationes Scholasticae Computer Team 1st ROW Mr Pratt, Leong. His acts being seven ages. At first the infant. Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms. And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel And shining morning face, creeping like snail Unwillingly to school. And then the lover. Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad Made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a soldier. Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard. Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel. Seeking the bubble reputation Even in the cannon’s mouth. And then the justice. In fair round belly with good capon lined. Full of wise saws and modern instances; And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts Into the lean and slippered pantaloon. With spectacles on nose and pouch on side. His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice. Turning again toward childish treble, pipes And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all. That ends this strange eventful history, Is second childishness and mere oblivion. Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything. William Shakespeare
