BOSTON LATIN 7 SCHOOL 1 CLASS OF 1980 DEDICATED IN LOVING MEMORY OF DENISE A. DALY AND DONALD PERELLA As we, the Class of 1980, forfeit the carefree days of our youth for the responsibil- ities of maturity, let us not forget two who were taken from us too soon. To Denise A. Daly (1962-1978) and Donald Perella (1962-1979), we dedicate this book. For some of us it is true that the days of our youth are the best days of our lives; for some, the future holds the promises of dreams fulfilled; for Denise and Donald time was precious and they gave the world all that they had in their young lives. As we ponder the memories of Denise and Donny, we can’t help remembering all of the happy things. There have been many written remembrances of these two, but in all of these afterthoughts, it is most important for all of us who knew them to hold a special place in our hearts to remember them . . . smiling. We fellow classmates of Denise Daly and Donald Perella must keep foremost in our thoughts that their happiness was stronger than any sorrow we may recall. IMMORTALITY Do not stand by my grave and weep . . . I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am a diamond glint on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awake in the morning hush I am the swift upflinging rush Of quiet birds in circling flight. I am the soft star shine at night. Do not stand by my grave and cry . . . I am not there. I did not die. Denise A. Daly ( 1962 - 1978 ) Death, be not proud, though some have called thee Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so: For those whom thou think’st thou dost overthrow Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me. One short sleep past, we wake eternally, And death shall be no more. Death, thou shalt die! John Donne Donald Perella ( 1962 - 1979 ) 3 HEADMASTER Mr. Michael Contompasis, Headmaster 4 HEADMASTER’S ADDRESS TO THE CLASS OF 1980: It is late Friday afternoon and as I sit agonizing over the preparation of this address, I am troubled by the thoughts which pass intermittently through my mind. For, commencement is a time to reflect on the past and to dream of things to come. It is an occasion in which all who know you can share in your sense of pride and accomplishment. It is a time to give special thanks to your parents who have for the past few years suffered through your disappointments and rejoiced at your achievements. Their feelings on this special day range from the joy of knowing that today you pass suc- cessfully from one stage of your life to another, to the sorrow of realizing that having entered adulthood, your dependence on them will diminish further. Don ' t ever forget them for they have given you the best that they could offer. They have guided and counseled you through the most dif- ficult period of your development. I know of no greater fallacy, nor one more widely believed, than the statement that youth is the happiest time of life. As we advance in years, we grow happier if we live intelligently. The universe is spectacular, and it is a free show. Difficulties and responsibilities strengthen and enrich the mind. To live abundantly is like climbing a mountain or a tower. To say that youth is happier than maturity is like saying the view from the bottom of the tower is better than the view from the top. As we ascend, the range of our view widens. The horizon is pushed further away. Finally, as we reach the summit, it is as if we have the world at our feet. Our school has taught you that learning requires hard work and dedica- tion. Our curriculum has given you the proficiency needed to function well as citizens and as civilized individuals. The ability to write and speak clearly, an understanding of our civilization, its roots, and your place in it will help you achieve an understanding of the way in which our, or any civilized society works, along with the ability to direct it rather than to be manipulated by it. But, I am troubled by the notion that w ' e have not done enough for you. Our country is plagued with serious problems which threaten her very existence. We enter a new decade seemingly unable as a people to resolve the economic, social, en- vironmental and political concerns that impact on our daily lives. We seem, as a nation, unwilling to accept the responsibility needed to resolve our problems. A willingness to accept the status quo, and to remain indifferent to the mediocrity and incompetence which prevail in our society will lead, I feel, to our downfall as a nation. For, it is true that every freedom, every right, and every privilege have their price and their corresponding duty without which they cannot be enjoyed. Each of us must take a direct and personal part in solving the great problems which plague this country. Our national public system of education, which for centuries has served for many as a stepping stone to a better way of life, now is threatened by a lack of direction and inconsistent policy decisions. This, in turn, has led to an erosion of trust and confidence by the public in the ability ' of our schools to educate our young people properly. Teachers are besieged by tasks which effectively reduce the number of hours spent in classroom instruction. They are bureaucratically hammered at by public health officials, by social workers and insurance companies, by mandated federal and state programs (often im- properly funded), by juvenile police, civil liberties lawyers, justice Department lawyers, and even divorce lawyers. Add to this the notion that by the age of 18, it is estimated that students have spent more hours watching television than doing schoolwork, as well as the notion that competition is immoral, grades undemocratic and promotion based on merit anti accomplishment is discriminatory, and one begins to recognize the scope of our problem. Is it any wonder that the result of all of this has been a decline in test scores, a rise in functional il- literacy and a low emphasis on achievement. I think that the lyrics of a current hit song by the rock group. Pink Floyd, mirror the image problem that pervades throughout our country ' s public school system, and I quote WE DON ' T NEED NO EDUCATION. There are some who mistakenly believe that because a democracy must repudiate the notion of a ruling social or political elite, it must, therefore, be hostile to the idea and existence of an intellectual or cultural elite defined by excellence or performance. There is a danger that the cult of conformity will make the pursuit of excellence seem educationally subversive. I recognize that in a just, fair and equitable arrangement, everyone should have a right to try out for the team; but not everyone has a right to be on the team regardless of his capacities. It seems, however, that we as a nation continue to suffer from the notion which emerged from the social climate of the 1960 ' s — that the pursuit of competency is elitist and undemocratic. To assume that equality and high achievement in public schools are incompatible is contrary to our nation ' s democratic ideals and beliefs. There are lots of things wrong with American education and in the outspoken way of our democracy, it draws perhaps more than its fair share of criticism. We run the messiest, least organized, most unruly, most disrespectful and varied educational system in the world. Probably all of the qualities I mention come from the simple fact that we are free, no matter what our funding source. As long as quality control lies principally in our own hands, as long as we are at least in this one key respect masters in our own houses, as long as we are able to keep alive, and to teach our kids, the American hunch that government doesn ' t do everything better than its citizens — only so long we may well remain free. For all our faults, we’re still the best to be had. The Latin School has flourished for over 345 years. It has maintained an undiminished attachment to wisdom while providing countless generations of students with an opportunity to develop their talents to the fullest. Its course of study has changed over the years, but never has the school deviated from its commitment to excellence. Has it been exacting? Fortunately, yes. Count its toughness as an act of mercy. The good things are not easily come by. You, as alumni, have inherited the responsibility to continue the legacy passed on to you today. You have an obligation to see to it that future generations are given the same opportunity to grow and to develop intellectually that you have received. The solutions to the problems that beset mankind are not unreachable. A dedication on your part to hard work, to serving others less for- tunate, and finally to the recognition of the need to respect human life and the dignity of others can rekindle the values and ideas which led to the founding of our great nation. I encourage you to try it. In closing, may I offer my congratulations to the Class of 1980. I am extremely proud of all of you. Please don’t forget us, for we think of you now as family. May you achieve happiness, success and joy in all your endeavors. God bless you all. Thank you. It is already tomorrow. Time, which never stops on its journey, will pass before your eyes, and in a few moments you will be members of the community looking back on the years you spent at Boston Latin School. When you do, the photos, facts, and memories in this book will be your stepping stone to a happy reminiscence. May your memories of Boston Latin School be plea- sant ones and may your futures be filled with happiness and success. With every wish for a bright tomorrow. Mr. Stacy Johnson Assistant Headmaster ASSISTANT HEADMASTER 1 remember you as entering Sixies — eager, smiling, but displaying some apprehension of a new beginning .... Do you remember your initial reaction to the lunchroom? to detention? to weekly tests? to the mystique of the names and portraits on the Assembly Hall walls? ... I remember you through these experiences . . . and others. I remember you in ties and jackets and skirts and dresses . . . and also in jeans and plaid skirts and hospital pants . . . I remember you as athletes wearing the jubilant look of vic- tory — and sometimes the doleful look of defeat . . . The happy times — approbation, high S.A.T. ' s, college accep- tance, a special valentine, a snowstorm, that means no school today . . . anil the sad times — the transfer of a close friend, not making the team, a teacher who doesn’t unders- tand you, braces. I see you now as mature individuals, each a unique and very special person. Your education and individuality will be your impetus to go forward. Be forever proud of your years at Boston Latin School, for you have achieved. How much can a man give to others? Boston Latin School has been blessed with two men who have dedi- cated their lives to increasing our knowledge. For longer than most of us can remember, Mr. Powers has been teaching seniors the Heritage of the United States. Mr. Miller used his expertise wherever necessary, whether as a teacher or administrator, to help students realize their goals. On the occasion of their retirement, we, the senior class of 1980, would like to honor these men, who have helped us so much and in so many ways. We can never adequately repay their efforts and concern. Mr. Miller, Mr. Powers, good luck and may your lives be full of joy. OUR THANKS 7 8 SENIORS 9 CLASS PRESIDENT STEPHEN MICHAEL COLLINS 10 Every year, throughout the country, at thousands of high schools and colleges, innumerable speakers give innumerable speeches, preaching to the students of some graduating class either to look forward toward their future with great anticipation, or to look backward at their years in the institution with nos- talgic sentiment. Students constantly hear such phrases as: “As I look upon this sea of bright, eager young faces, I am reminded of my wonderful years here at . . Though the intent of each speaker is, indeed, quite gracious and probably very sincere, they are ask- ing us to think, primarily of ourselves. I am asked to think of my past, or to plan my future. Very well. These things I do, I am sure we all do. We have made friendships of immense value here, and we hope for successful, happy futures. It’s common, natural, and advisable. But to none of these things do I wish to speak. I ask you not to look forward . . . not to look backward . . . but to look sideways ... at the person next to you. We have just passed through ten years which Tom Wolfe chose to call the “ME” decade. If we can, in however small a way, let us endeavor to give the eighties another name; and let us start here, let us start now. Let us start now . . . There is the story of the man who asked his gardener on a Wednesday to plant a certain kind of tree in his backyard on the following Friday. The gardener objected because of the length of time it took for the tree to mature. “In that case,” the man replied, “you’d better plant it this afternoon.” So this afternoon I am planting a small tree which takes years to mature. Give something to whomever you can. Take some time in the life we’ve been given to live . . . and live a bit of it for someone else. It might just be for the person next to you ... or someone you might meet in the future ... or even someone you might never meet at all. It might mean nothing, but then again it just might mean everything. It is only necessary that you do give. How you do it is not important. Where you do it is not important. And, believe me, when you do it is not important. In ancient Greece a certain criminal was brought before the king and sentenced to death for his crime. Before he was taken away he told the king, “If you give me one year, I will teach your favorite horse to sing hymns.” The king was interested and agreed to the proposal. The man’s fellow criminals laughed at him as he entered the king’s stables and started to sing hymns to the horse. He turned to them and said: “I have a year. Who knows what may happen? The king might die, I might die, the world may come to an end . . . and who knows? Perhaps the horse might learn to sing hymns.” I don’t have an answer but we do have a lifetime, and it will take a lifetime. We probably can’t give the world a better future . . , but we just might make our fellow man’s life a little easier ... we just might be responsible for one person having one happy moment ... or, who knows? Perhaps the horse might learn to sing hymns . . . 11 Brian W. O ' Sullivan, Treasurer Klizabeth M. Guerin, Vice President Joseph J Shamon, Secretary 12 Class Advisor Mr. Guy A. L, After a brief introduction from Headmaster Contompasis sl and class president Steve Collins, Senator Kennedy C| , approached the podium to be welcomed by enthusiastic applause. Senator Kennedy first warmed up to the audi- )( ence by praising the undefeated girls ' swimming team and f the football team before going on to more serious subjects. 5 . He stated that the youth of today should participate in poli- eJ , tics as responsible citizens. In addition, the Senator dis- cussed education problems, the employment outlook, the economic crisis, and the tensions that exist in the Boston community. When he finished his speech, Senator Kennedy asked the students their priorities on such issues as infla- tion, Senator Kennedy An for Honor Latin unemployment, energy, the environment, foreign policy and social issues. His final question concerned drug abuse. The Senator then answered questions from the audience on such topics as the American economy, racial tensions in the city, college costs, E.R.A., and Soviet troops in Cuba. Although the students did not receive any direct answers to their questions, most were captivated by the Senator’s charisma and his inspiring words — “Are you going to care? Are you going to be involved? Are you going to share the essence and passion of our times? (And finally), are you going to give back to America for all that has been given to you? March Close-Up 1980 On March 2, 1980. ten Latin School students (nine seniors and one junior) escorted by Mr. John Cunningham boarded a bus at South Station for a ten hour trip to Washington D.C. These students, soon dubbed the “DC-10, were par- ticipating in the Close-Up Program which annually attracts thousands of youngsters to the capital for a week of intense, in-person study of their federal government. Throughout most of this week they closely observed the three major divisions of government: the executive, legislative, and judicial branches: they learned of the important role of the media in government: and they discovered the inner- workings of the two-party system. They also attended a number of seminars on many topics ranging from the function of muclear power to the uses of the C.I.A. in international relations. At all sessions the students were encouraged to ques- tion and even criticize the various speakers. Each participant toured the city of Washington from Capitol Hill to Arlington National Cemetery. To avoid over-concentration upon governmental matters, one evening was spent at a dinner theater viewing Godspell and another evening was set aside by the “DC-10” to establish a new Close-Up record for the con- sumption of pizza. At week’s end they received enthusiastically the opportunity to visit either Georgetown or the Smithsonian Institute. When the “DC- 10 returned to Boston and reviewed their visit they all agreed they not only had had a marvelous time with many fond memories and had met many fine young people from all over the United States but also that they had learned a great deal about political processes at the national level. 40 .... 7 TWH 41 Bob ROBERT EDMUND HARRIS Finally Finished!!! Coach Costello 80 • • • A Winning The Wolfpack football season could be described in a word — frustrating. The opening game set the tone for the whole season. Falling behind early against a surprisingly strong Taunton squad, the team looked very lackluster. However, in the second half the team and the offense ral- lied behind the passing of Senior Kevin Harlen; they scored a touchdown and were driving for what would have been the game winning score when time ran out in the game. The final score was Taunton 14, Latin 8. With injured center Bob Burke returning to the lineup and Captain Brian O’Sullivan leading both the offense and defense, the Wolfpack started playing with the fire that the school had been accustomed to seeing. Despite this Latin managed to win only four of seven games before the sea- son’s finale. Impressive wins over Chelsea, Weymouth South, rival Tech and Xaverian couldn’t take the disap- pointment out of a tough loss to Chicopee and a frustrating tie with Bridgewater Raynham and a loss in an emotional game against old nemesis B.C. High. In that loss Senior Jack McGonagle, a Globe All Scholastic, played his finest game of the season. Of course the season did end on an up note with a 22-0 Season (5-3-1) i BOSTON I UNIVERSITY H NICKERSON . HU field DOWN ! ™ TERRIERS 1 VISITORS PI 1 C. BALL f. The team won 15 of the 17 first place medals in the city of Boston meet. Stephen Kelley, James Earls, Carlton Burke, and William Shaugh- nessey were triple winners. Timothy Horan, Matthew Walsh, and Kenneth Fleming single event victors. Stephen was an award winner in both the state and New England interscholastic meets. The trophy winners were Ste- phen, the most valuable, James Earls, unsung hero, Matthew Walsh, out- standing scholarship, and Carlton Burke, most improved. 84 r ■ UNDEFEATED GIRLS 85 Volleyball (17-1) State Champs The Wolfpack volleyball team was characterized this year by overwhelming success and great controversy. As allowed by a new state law, Latin included both men and women on its team. Criticized by purists who maintained that volleyball should be played by women against women, the team often met with harsh insults and catcalls. Never- theless, the team remained unfazed and playing brilliantly all season long, it rose above petty protests to capture the state title. Soccer (7-7-6) Captained by Senior defender Tony Amara and coached by J. Evans, the Latin soccer team finished the year with a 7-7-6 record including wins over rivals Eng- lish and Tech. 87 Hockey TEAM SHOT: FRONT: Mike Koffman, Mike Capeo, [oe McDougall, Wally McDonough, Dan Dwan, Don Trainor, Gary Brainard. BACK: Coach Dave Coleman, |ohn Ladd, )oe Donavan, Robert Greaney, Mark Linehan, Steven Fahey, David Gaudin, )ames DeCosta, Ricky Zieglia, Dan Flaherty, Steve Reardon, Jack McGonagle. Hockey The hockey team finished the season with an 11-9 record, unable to duplicate last year ' s city championship. This doesn’t mean that the season wasn’t a successful one. The Wolfpack faced many tough teams and lost many close games, including one point losses to Concord, Carlisle, Bed- ford, and South Boston. Some of the Wolfpack’s victories came against Charlestown, Tech, and East Boston. One of the highlights of the season came during a winning streak in which Wolfpack goalie Walter McDonough did not allow a single goal. 88 Track Indoor Track — Boy s Coached by Fred Irons and captained by Tony Coffee, this year’s indoor track team finished with a record of 5 wins and 4 losses. This ye ar’s team was strong in the dis- tance races, boasting three of the city ' s top five two-milers, and one of the city’s top three in both the mile and the 1000 yards. However, lack of outstanding talent and depth in the shorter races and field events hurt the team, as Latin fin- ished a disappointing fourth in the city championship meet. Indoor Track — Girls The girls track team showed great competitive fire during the season as it finished with a 6-1 record. However, for the second year in a row, it lost the city championship to Tech by less than eight points. 90 Outdoor Track With seniors Jim Mahoney, Bert Rey- nolds, and Ed Goff enjoying great seasons in their final year at Latin, the boys track team swept successfully through another winning season. However, once again Latin finished second to rival Tech in the city championships. The girls team also had a fine season as they finished third in the city championships, sparked by fresh- man Janice Reid who won both the city and state championship in the 440 yd. run. 91 Cross Country jdtdos. 1 iWv 1772 ■B I “T - ■ “V i T, SJ F f ; IPBv w t I r r W P V M A W ' 1 TEAM PICTURE: FRONT ROW: Dench, Boone, Verrochi, P. The Wolfpack Cross Country team met all challenges during an unde- feated season which culminated in Latin ' s first city championship in three years. This year’s team, on which no single runner stood out above all the others, was marked by great depth and determination. How- ever, during the year, standout per- formances were turned in by Seniors Ed Goff, Tony Coffey, and Bert Rey- nolds, and by Junior Rard Horgan. The Varsity team had to share the spotlight this year with the outstand- ing Freshman team led by Paul Stan- islawzk and Ken Fleming. Their per- formances in the Catholic Memorial Invitational Meet helped Latin win the Freshman team title. This marked the first time a Latin Freshman team had won a statewide meet. Coach Irons 92 Undefeated City Champs Girls City Champs 93 WINS BASEBALL LOSSES The BLS baseball team once again had a fine year on the field winning twenty-two games against only tw ' O defeats. Latin displayed strong defensive talent with an especially fine pitching staff headed by senior Bill O ' Leary who, while batting well over .400, posted nine victories op- posite two narrow losses. Other seniors like Kevin Harlen, Steve Reardon. Mike Koffman, and Bob Barringer also made major contributions to the success of this remarkable team. With their hard work and the clutch support of the rest of the team the team made the State Playoffs where they faced three outstanding teams. In the first game they easily conquered a championship Lawrence team by an 8 to 3 score. However, in the second contest, they found Holliston to be a more challenging opponent as they slugged out an 8 to 7 victory. In the semi-final led by Bill O ' Leary for ten arduous innings against a formidable Somerset squad, they succumbed in a heart-breaker 3 to 2. The 1980 Boston Latin School baseball team, although largely unheralded and under-supported because of its schedule at the end of the school-year calendar, was a team for which the entire Latin School community could feel intense pride. 94 VARSITY CREW: FRONT ROW: E.
