ACTING ASSISTANT HEADMASTER Carmine A. Vara SECRETARIES: Standing: Mrs. McCarthy, Mrs. Mahoney Seated: Mrs. Lacroix ASSISTANT HEADMASTER Stacy T. Johnson 5 To The Graduating Class Of 1978: The accomplishments of your class are an indication of the tremendous importance that you, as students, place upon acquiring the educational experience needed for future success. You have maintained a dedica- tion and interest in the realization of your goals at a time when it is common to downgrade our insistence upon academic excellence. Our goal at Boston Latin School continues to be the preparation of young men and women to become educated and worthy members of our society. You have the opportunity and the means to make a constructive contribution to the improvement of mankind. It will not be easy to accomplish your goals without a continuing dedication to hard work and a continuing devotion to duty. Every freedom, every right, and every privilege have their prices and their corresponding duties without which they cannot be enjoyed. You have been given the means to succeed. What you do with your lives will be an indication of how well you have learned the lessons taught at Boston Latin School. Much has been asked of you during your stay with us. Often you may have questioned the value of your experience here. The fact that you have completed your education indicates the importance you place upon completing our rigorous course of study. As graduates you have earned the recognition and respect of those that have preceded you. Recognize that with maturity comes the responsibility to ensure that your Alma Mater continues as a viable institution of learning. You must support us in every way so we may continue to provide your successors with the same opportunities that you have received. Anything less than maximum effort on your part will diminish the her- itage and tradition that you now enjoy as graduates. Your graduation this year adds a further bit of history to the Latin School. It marks the first time that young women have successfully completed the six-year course of study. Your success as a class is a source of pride to your teachers, your parents and especially to your Headmaster. We will always remember you and hope that you will continue to share with us your future thoughts and successes. May you experience happiness and joy in the years that follow. May God Bless you all. Fl t Campus PRESIDENT William Davis We have all reached the goal we were striving for wheil we came to Boston Latin School — graduation. Surviving the program at BLS was not an easy goal to achieve. Our masters, through the demands for hard work and strict discipline, have pushed us to the point of resentment, and sometimes even hatred toward BLS. But if one looks back on his BLS e.xperiences he will probably discover that they were not only most beneficial, but also most enjoyable. We can best use our Latin School training in this day and age where even the smallest of countries threaten world peace and a small minority of radicals tries to control the lives of millions of decent people in our very own country. We must keep peace, we must decide what is best for ourselves, and we must become the leaders of tommorrow in order to solve our own, the country’s, and perhaps the world’s problems. How far we go depends upon how firmly we have grasped the ideals at BLS and how well we shall put them to use in the further- ing of our education. I am sure that the Class of 1978 will not let down the school or themselves. Lor the Class of 1978, I sincerely thank the faculty, the administration, and the remaining students at BLS for making our experiences here ones we will always treasure and will most certainly never forget. Linally, 1 would like to give special thanks to our Headmaster, Mr. Michael Contompasis, for his outstanding leadership in guid- ing BLS through what could prove to be its most trying period. 30 Sincerely, WILLIAM J. Ellen Mike Congratulations to the first graduating class in Boston Latin’s 343-year history to include girls who have completed the six-year program! We are fortunate to have been in a class that was not only co-ed, but which also was representative of the divers racial, ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds that make Boston such a vibrant city. And we are also lucky to have received a traditional academic high school education with groundings in classical literature and languages as well as in contemporary math and science. When we entered Latin School, this type education was not in wide favor; but many school systems are rediscovering the worth of a classical college preparatory education and are cutting back on the potpourri of frivolous courses that were until recently included in their curricula. 1 was told it was customary for the valedictorian to speak on any current prob- lem he wished. Having been in Mr. Beninati ' s history class, though, I realize that 1 could not speak on a controversial topic without allowing time for rebuttals reflecting the various viewpoints represented in our class — and that could take all night! However; I think there is a point on which we can all agree: there is malaise which pervades our society and which affects all of us — a lack of integrity. There is cheating by some of those receiv- ing w ' elfare payments as well as by some doctors being reimbursed under the Medicaid and Medicare pro- grams. Retail prices are being forced up because of shoplifting and the cost of security as well as by stealing by employees. Vandals destroy property worth millions of dollars, while businessmen embezzle funds using sophisticated computers and make illegal payments to obtain contracts. More than a million people have defaulted on government loans to students, with much of the money having been paid to schools which use misleading advertising to attract students. Homes are being broken into at an alarming rate, yet there is a seemingly insatiable market for the stolen goods. An arson-for-profit ring in Massachusetts was abetted by those in- vestigating the crime. We have taxpayers evading taxes and a scandal in our state’s Department of Taxation. In addition, we had the Korean payoffs to congressmen on a nation- al level and the MBM affair in our own backyard. Evidently what Juvenal said in the second century is still true, “Honesty is praied and starves.” What can we do about it. We should insist that our elected officials adhere to a code of ethics and should de- mand their expulsion from office if they don’t. We should urge that professionals, most of whom have long established codes of ethics, more actively police their own ranks. Per- haps we should begin considering what the role of the school should be in reinforcing the home and the church in the development of character. Apparently Harvard feels there is a part to be played by the colleges because its proposed core curriculum includes a course on moral and ethical problems. I am not so naive as to believe that we can change human nature. However, unless we start to respect one another and have respect for one another’s rights and property, we will be unable to solve our common problems. Most of all, though, we must have respect for ourselves and be convinced of the worth of maintaining our personal integrity. In closing, I would like to thank our parents for their patience, and en- couragement during the past six years; our faculty for their dedicated teaching and the personal interest they have shown in us; and the administration for having pre- served the integrity of Boston Latin School and for having assured that each of us was well prepared for college. The experi- enced Latin defense became a great asset to the team under the fine coaching of Steve Cohen and Paul Mani. The Latin offense, coached by Paul Costello and Bob Ford proved itself later on in the season. Latin ripped through six opponents with convincing performances, while the Crunch Bunch defense gave up only one touchdown until meeting B.C. High.
