lif : LIBER ACTORUM 1977 Boston Latin School Boston, Massachusetts Editor-in-chief CHRISTOPHER KENNEALLY Editor PAUL PHILLIPS Faculty Advisors I MR. FRANK HANNIGAN MR. WILLIAM POWERS I Photographers MICHAEL DOMENICUCCI STANLEY DUDUCH ANTONIO OTERO OUR INTENTIONS . . . We’re all For many of us, the years at Latin School have been trying and difficult. For oth- ers, BLS ' s traditions of academic excellence have again done their handiwork, pro- viding the city of Boston, and indeed, the world, with citizens worthy of the high- est acclaim. But for all of us, the part of our lives which was spent at 78 Avenue Louis Pasteur shall always be looked upon with pride, and a justifiable sense of accomplishment. For we were, we are, the Class of 1977. It is the intention of this book, then, to capture a minute part of that time, so that all may see just how it really was. 2 In Remembrance of . . . In his many years as a teacher at the Latin School, Mr, Jameson did much more than teach us Latin and Greek. Thanks to his fine acting skills, we were able to see the anger of Achilles and the slyness of Sinon come to life in the classroom. None of his students could ever think of Latin as a dead language.. His style of teaching was unique. After gaining recognition for his work on stage and in radio, Mr. Jameson came to teach at the Latin School. It was at this time that he performed his most miraculous feat. Every year, he transformed young Latin School boys into Shakespearean actors. He also continued performing in radio commercials, where his many characters were loved by us all. While at the Latin School, he earned the respect of every- one fortunate enough to know him. Last year he decided to retire from teaching. Latin and Greek will never be the same without him. This however, is not a time for sadness. We will always cherish our memories of Mr. Jameson, and are happy for the people who will now have a chance to know him. We wish Mr. Jameson success, health, and happiness in all future endeavors. . . . Constantine George Pappas Jameson 3 Dedicated to . . He was only with us for twenty-one years, but in that short time, he made his presence felt. Andrew P. Puopolo, who died tragically, left a mark for all to see. school basketball game - just warming up. Coach,” he would say. Because of his outstanding scholastic and athletic achievements at BLS, he was admitted to Harvard, where he continued his academic and athletic excellence. Medical school was to be his next step. Andy deeply and openly loved his parents, sister and brother. His family came first - they were very close. He loved people. At Latin School he would take time out from a busy schedule to tutor younger students. He was so vibrant and active, so energetic and full of life. His life was remarkable, constantly studying, playing sports, being with his family - never a wasted moment. Andy was a coach ' s dream. He was eager, totally dedicated and always in tremendous physical condition. He was a complete individual as he was highly developed in body, mind, and spirit. Andy ' s excellence at Boston Latin School will serve as a guide to other students. His achievements will act as a goal for future students to try to attain. A scholarship has been formed in Andy ' s name and will be awarded annually to that Boston Latin Stu- dent who best exemplifies Andy ' s performance. Andrew Puopolo was a winner in life and he left life a winner. He accomplished: he achieved; he succeeded. There is no question this procedure would have continued if he lived longer. He would have been such a credit to society. Andy has toiled long and arduously in the vineyard. Now heaven shall be his reward. Andy was a perfect example of the Latin School concept of work plus desire equals success. He came to Latin School from the North End and through hard work and dedication, he graduated 7th in a class of 239. He was Vice-President of his class and was a three year athlete, playing football, basketball, and baseball. Andy was chosen for the Scholar- Athlete Award his Senior year. He was extraordinary. He intercepted four passes in one game playing with a broken wrist as Latin defeated New Bedford. He was selected Eastern Massachusetts Player of the Week for that performance. He would run nine miles prior to playing a high by Coach Costello 4 Andrew P. Puopolo 1955-1976 5 Headmasters’ This year has been an unusual one for the Boston Latin School. The retirement of Dr. O’Leary at the end of last year left an ominous gap in the administration of the school. In September, Mr. David Miller, a teacher at BLS for thirty-five years was appointed Acting Headmaster until a screening board could select a man or woman for the permanent position. In mid-January we learned of their decision and on February 28, 1977, it was made official; Mr. Michael G. Contompasis ' 57 was to be our new headmaster. Both of these two distinguished sons of Latin have consented to address the senior class in this issue of the Liber Actorum. “Vos Exituros Salutamus” Mr. David Miller As you complete one chapter of your life story and prepare to start another, you find yourself in a world of turmoil, unrest, and uncertainty - especially true in your own city with its desegregation problems, its financial difficulties, and its political system being questioned by concerned citizens. 0 Tempora, O Mores, your school has been under constant pressure and has not been immune to these problems. Yet the school has continued to provide you a meaningful education and has pre- pared you to meet whatever challenges are in store for you in the future. On the other side of the ledger, the school is grateful to you, the Class of 1977, for not throwing in the towel, for your desire to learn, and for your accomplishments. Special congratulations are due to you for your fortitude and tenacity in acquiring an education under stresses and strains not felt by previous graduates. Our goal has been to send forth young men and women of fine character who will play an important part in the affairs of the community. The city, state, and country will be only as good as you, its citizens, make it. Your school will only be as good as its students and you graduates make it. Your school will need all the support it can muster to keep it a viable institution. In my three score and plus years, nothing has given me greater satisfaction than serving as your Acting Headmaster. Thank you! And now, Vos exituros salutamus. 6 Mr. Michael G. Contompasis ' 57 Messages TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1977; I congratulate you, the Class of 1977, for the truly out- standing achievement and honor that you have brought to yourself and your Alma Mater. Your dedication and devotion to duty have been exemplary. The years that you have spent here may often have seemed long, arduous, and frustrating. Many of you have not yet fully realized the value of the Latin School experience. The exposure to a stiff curriculum, the hours spent in preparation for your daily work, the strict adherence to rules and regulations have provided you with the necessary background to further your personal and academic careers. You have been given the means to succeed. A great deal now depends upon how well you apply the lessons learned at the Boston Latin School. Be ever mindful of your responsibilities to your parents, your school and your commu- nity. Be especially loyal to Alma Mater. Aid her in every way so that she may continue to provide your successors with the opportunities that you have received. Make it a point to provide the support needed to help future Latin School stu- dents. I congratulate you again for your interest, your cooperation and your successes. I wish you well and Godspeed. The years that we have spent at the Latin School have been marked by more changes than those of any other period of our school ' s history, the most significant being the appointment of a new headmaster for the first time by a parent-teacher-student screening committee. Now our most important responsibility as graduates lies in working to insure that the students who follow us will receive the same high quality of education that we were given. 1 have confidence in our ability to do so. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate you, the members of the class of 1977, and to wish you every success in the years ahead. I also want to express for you our gratitude to all those who have made our graduation possible . BRADY CATHY FRANK CHARLIE PAUL MARGUERITE DAN 39 The Spectre of Boston Latin School by Paul Phillips Among the often-repeated phrases of Boston Latin School teachers is the prophecy that the distinc- tion of our having graduated from Boston Latin School will follow us throughout our lives. While other students soon drop the names of their high schools from their lists of achievements, Latin School alumni retain the name of their Alma Mater with pride. Their pride is based on the continuing academic excellence which Boston Latin graduates attain. The reasons for this success have often been discussed by both administrators and faculty members. Dr. Wilfred O ' Leary lauded the liberal arts philosophy, which, he said, fosters intellectual stim- ulation and develops a well-rounded student. Mr. David Miller extolled the stability of the Boston Latin School; these sentiments were echoed by Mr. Aaron Gordon, who praised the consistency of both the faculty and the curriculum. Butrall these factors, while having, no doubt, a profound effect on the educational process at Boston Latin, hardly explain the long-enduring academic achievements of Latin School students. The Class of 1977, for instance, includes the Number One mathematical student in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, one of only dfie hundred nationally-selected competitors for the Mathematics Asso- ciation of America team, and nine National Merit Scholarship finalists. Noting all these accomplishments, one realizes that the true reason for the ongoing success of the Boston Latin School is the quality of the students who attend the school. Afi ir four to six years of continuous weeding out, the vestige of students who remain into the Senior Year is, indeed, the cream of the crop. But these students possessed the seed of success long before they came to Boston Latin. Latin School merely caused that seed to germinate. In the same way. Dr. O’Leary ' s belief that BLS creates the well-rounded student is only partly true. Intellectual conditioning merely brings to the surface the versatility inherent in the students which Latin School by nature attracts. This versatility is more than just academic ability, however. Among Latin School students there is a unity which binds them together in a common purpose. Mr. Aaron Gordon called it a feeling of family. There is an empathy, so that success achieved by one is shared by all. When six members of our class were accepted to Harvard University under the Early Action Plan, for nstance, the subsequent reaction was like electricity spreading throughout the entire class. And when fellow class-member Perry Mehrling became the Number-One-ranked mathematics student in Massachusetts, it was a victory for us all . In the same way, the misfortunes of one student or teacher become the misfortunes of all students and teachers. During the Autumn of 1971, for example, when violence rocked the Latin School English High area, the members of the BLS football team, among them Andrew Puopolo, were only too eager to come to the aid of the harassed underclassmen. In 1973, when beloved Latin School assistant-headmaster William Devore died, a spontaneous movement to collect contributions for the establishment of a Devore Memorial Scholarship was an immediate success. And when Andy Puopolo ' 73 was fatally stabbed in 1976, a joint scholarship effort by Boston Latin and Harvard University was enormously successful. This spirit of camaraderie among BLS alumni, fostered in youth at Boston Latin School, continues into later years. It is the motivating force behind the golden names along the walls of the audito- rium, na mes i nHTcaiTng large donations to the school by Latin School alumni. This camaraderie is also the reason that the 25th- and 50th-year alumni return to judge the annual BLS Prize Declama- Competition . It is the reason that gentlemen like Drs. O’Leary and Desmond, and Messrs. Miller, Contompasis, and Gordon continue to uphold the high academic standards of their Alma Mater. And finally, this’ camaraderie is the basis for the immense pride and loyalty which all aluffifff ' fSSl’TWtlTC ' Boston ' Latin Sbhool . litiT . .41 ANNE MARIE DEVER Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow. That ' s a good question . . BLS Presents On April 27, 1977, Boston Latin School had as its special guest Capt. Jacques Yves Cousteau, famed under- water explorer, television personality, author, and co-inventor of scuba equipment. In two lectures before awed audiences, Cousteau stressed that experiments in deep-sea diving are useful to mankind. In addition, he spoke of the thrill of diving, which he said resembles very much what the astronauts experience in outer space. It is quite exhilarating. The Captain also spoke of his last dive inside the wreck of the Britannic, the sister ship of the Titanic, which lies 186 feet beneath the ocean. The ship, two-thirds as long as the Empire State Building is high, is the subject of a Cousteau Special airing in Decem- ber, 1977. Cousteau found it very impressive walking down staircases, entering the captain ' s room and seeing furniture covered with yellow sponges. On the subject of living underwater, Cousteau stated that short-term settle- ments for scientific exploration are possible, but magazine articles describing underwater cities for the future are nonsense . ' ’ The noted undersea expert also answered questions from the audience. One student, asking about the spread of pesticides in our ocean, was told that there is no place in the seas safe from these poisons. Perhaps the most intriguing response came from the question, Will man ever be able to communicate with dolphins? The Captain replied, We do know their language; if it is a language, is a modulated language, unlike ours which is articulated. They communi- cate by whistling, just as shepherds on the Canary Islands do. There are about 1900 distinct whistles which could be words. Cousteau ' s message, that man could not survive with a dead sea, is one we should all heed before it is too late. We must save oui seas . . . Man cannot live with a dead sea. Two losses followed, with Latin falling to Archbishop Wil- liams 13-6, and perennial state power Newton North 20-6. Latin bounced back to thrash Weymouth North 28-0, with Tim Mulvey rushing over 200 yards for his finest game of the season. Then, in the final game before English, Latin strug- gled to an 8-8 tie with old rival B.C. High. Turkey Day arrived with Latin rolling to a first-quarter lead of 5-0. In the fourth quarter, English, playing a surprisingly strong defensive game, pushed across for a touchdown and a 6-5 lead. But the Wolfpack came back and drove down the field. Steve Wool scooped up a Latin fumble in the end zone to pro- vide the winning score of 11-6 in the season finale. 84 Basketball 1st ROW: Kordis, Colter, Psyhogeos, Duffy, Wool (Capt.), Connolly, Murphy, Callahan. 2nd ROW: Coach Costello, Vazza, Moran, Dickerson, James, Hagan, Little, Tate, Keeley, Bumim. 86 The 1976-77 Wolfpack Basketball Team showed a marked improvement over the previous year, upping its record to 7-12. The season was high- lighted by upset victories over Dor- chester and Technical and a thrilling buzzer-beating shot by Alan James against Madison which gave Latin a one-point triumph. Then, in the final game , the Pack avenged their opening loss to Weymouth South by trouncing them 90-80. Once again. Senior Ed Duffy was tough on both defense and offense, averaging well over ten points per game. Freshman Alan James enjoyed a torrid scoring season, being elected to the All-City second team. The future for Boston Latin Basket- ball looks bright, with the recapturing of the city championship and another crack at the State Title well in sight. 87 A Rebuilding Year This past season, the Wolfpack Hockey team got off to a very slow start, but gained momentum during the season and came on to finish with a strong 7-9-1 record. The experience the whole team gained this year should show next winter as only two players will be lost through graduation, Steve Simpson and Kevin Riley. Leading the thrust for the ' 78 City Championship will be Jim Connolly, Martin Daly, Paul McCarthy, Mike Ohmstede, John Powers, Ed Sheehy, Steve Slade, Tom Sullivan, and co- captain John Whelan. The team would also like to thank Coach Coleman for sticking with them through the season. 89 Baseball 1st ROW: Koffman, Doyle (capt.)i Buckley, Slade, Mulvey, Lejx)re, Michalowski, Wilson (co-capt.). 2nd ROW: Mr. Coleman, O ' Gardy, J. An extra-inning 4-3 victory over Everett, highlighted by a Jeff Peters eighth-inning blast, opened the season. Revere was Latin ' s next victim as Mark Michalowski pitched a strong game, winning 2-1. The Wolfpack rolled up many more victories over out-classed city league opponents, aided by good defense, timely batting, and strong pitching. Meanwhile, the team drop- ped one to a powerful B.C. High squad in an exciting game which saw Latin stay close but finally succumb 7-2. The purple then avenged an early defeat at the hands of Tech by whip- ping the Tigers 5-1. A few victories later, Latin clinched the title with a 10-0 shellacking of English. In the State Tournament, L atin did not fare well, losing 8-1 in the opening game. 91 Girls’ Volleyball 1st ROW; Quintero, Baer, McGrath (co-capt.), Giunte, Dorgan, Murphy, McNamara (co-capt.), Mor- itza. 2nd ROW: Smith, Quintero, Wieliczkiewicz , Ule, Fraser, Wong, Stanton, Coach Needle. This year ' s Volleyball Team once again has proved the theory that hard work pays off. Under the coaching of Miss Barbara Needle, the team fin- ished off the season with an incredible record of 11-3. A hard-won victory came against English, 2 games to 1. The team fared equally well in the Massachusetts State Tournament, gaining entry into the semi-final round where they were narrowly defeated. Standouts for this year’s team were Laura McGrath and Dolly O ' Neil as spikers and Pauline McNamara as a setter. Also starting were Zoe Murphy, Patti Stanton, Daina Ule and Denise Dorgan. Other hard-working members were Mai Wong, Sue Baer and Ann Marie Josema. This year ' s Girls ' Basketball Team, because of the dedication of its new coach Mrs. Catherine Mullen, and the much-improved performances of play- ers O ' Neil and McGrath (forwards), Stanton (center), and Bonica and McNamara (guards), has completed its first successful season since its origin three years ago, with a 7-7 record. For their fine efforts, Pauline McNamara earned a place on this year ' s All City Team and Patty Stanton was given the honor of M.V.P. Much credit must also be given to the younger members of the team, who, judging from their performances this past season, will lead the team to greater victories in the years to come . Girls’ Basketball TOP ROW: Gearin, O ' Neill, McNeil, Stanton, Young, Coach Mullen, Coach Price. BOTTOM ROW: Getchell, Bonica, McGrath, McNamara, Nelson. 93 Softball The Varsity Softball Team has once again completed a winning season with an 11-3 record and State Tournament standing. This year ' s starting line-up consisted of: Pitcher Ellen Bloom, Catcher Jeanne Bonica, IB Denise Dorgan, 2B Nancy Andrea, 3B Patty Stanton, SS Dolly O ' Neill, LF Laura McGrath, CF Dina Bloom and RF Pau- line McNamara. Help from the bench came from players K. Casey, M. Quigley, I. Getchell, C. Deary, ' M. Wong, and C. Ferzoco. Dolly O ' Neill won the M.V.P. award, and Jeanne Bonica won the Unsung Hero Trophy. Under the leadership of Coach Aeillo, the team showed skill, spirit and, above all, sportsmanship. In the City tournament, Latin placed a surprising third, which shows the team’s hard work and determination. Next year looks promising for the team, with an undefeated season pos- sible. Co-Captains for next year will be Steve Walters and Peter Benucci. The duo of Reid and Geyer, who both placed in the State Meet, and the same core of runners from Cross Coun- try , were the basis for the sterling per- formances of the Indoor Team. Because of the leadership of tri-Cap- tains John Frackleton, Bruce MacF- arlane and Charles Lepore, the team unexpectedly won the City Champion- ship. Lepore was outstanding in the sprints combined with the surprising help of newcomers Joe Gardiner and Bill Buckley in the 600. Tony Walker and Bruce MacFarlane, despite illness, gave an all-out performance to put Latin over the top and win another championship. 98 Swimming Team If 1st ROW: O ' Neill, J. Under the leadership of co-captains Jean Bonica and Betty Guerin, the team defeated all its competitors. They also defeated Saint Clare ' s in a close practice meet. At the City Championship Meet the team won many firsts, seconds, and thirds and successfully defended their city title. The team practiced at Eng- lish High during the winter months at English High.
