Each of us has left a part of himself behind, too. It is the purpose of this book to remind us of our common bonds in time. After we have gone our separate ways, the times we had and the friends we knew will matter most. The Class of 1976, a unique entity which is part of a greater whole, will remain immortal in the pages of this work, and in the minds of its members. 2 h 3 The Six Million Dollar Man I wonder if I ' ll make the squad? The past twelve years have seen dramatic changes at Boston Latin School: expansion of the science department, abolition of the dress code, introduction of individual scheduling with the seven period day and utility periods, establishment of flexi- ble campus, and the enrollment of girls. In addition to these innovations, a Federal Court order has produced, in the last two years, a great deal of misunderstanding and controversy about the process of selecting students for admission to the school. Throughout all these experiences, the retiring headmaster of the Boston Latin School, Doctor Wilfred L. O ' Leary, has exerted a calming and stabilizing influence over the academic lives of his charges by his inspirational leadership and spirited defense of Alma Mater. In 1925 Doctor O ' Leary graduated from Boston Latin School. He returned in 1934 to teach history and by 1948 had attained the position of Head of Department in history at the Jeremiah E. Burke High School with four years out for wartime service. Following the outbreak of World War II he joined the United States Army Air Corps in 1942 rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel before receiving his discharge in 1946. He remained in the Air Force Reserve until his retirement as a full colonel in 1966. Although he became headmaster of Roslindale High School in 1957, he did not realize his lifelong ambition, appoint- ment as headmaster of Boston Latin School, until 1964. During his long career Doctor O ' Leary has been elected to office in many scholastic organizations including the New Eng- land Association of History Teachers, the Massachusetts Schoolmasters Club, and The Headmasters Association and has been honored by various organizations both civic and scholastic. Among his most recent honors have been Man of the Year award by the Boston Latin School Alumni Association, 1975; Citation for Achievement from the National Association of Sec- ondary School Principals, 1976; and election to the prestigious position of president of The Headmasters Association in Feb ruary of this year. With his untiring efforts to maintain the scholastic standards and traditional values of a Boston Latin School education in mind, the Class of 1976 respectfully dedicates this Bicentennial Edition of the Liber Actorum to its distinguished headmaster. Doctor Wilfred L. O ' Leary, 18 Dr, Wilfred O ' Leary 1 41 1 , ■ Assistant Headmaster Edwin F. Butters and Headmaster Wilfred L. O’Leary 19 . . . Mr, Aaron Gordon Boston Latin suffers yet another loss this year with the retirement of the greatly admired Mr. Aaron Gordon, whose teaching career spans almost 5 decades and several departments of study. He was a ’’Latin School boy” himself, graduated from Harvard, and even served as Yearbook Advisor for over 20 years. We will best remember his genuine concern for students and his personal historical anecdotes, but let’s not forget his jokes, constant snacking, and endless circle of personal acquaintances. Those many friendships have been a source of pride to him, and a source of knowledge for us. We, the senior class, take this opportunity to thank him for his dedication to us, to the school, and to education in general . We wish him further happiness and limitless vitality. Headmaster ' s Message Foriy-six years ago next September, I became a member of the Boston Public School System and, with the excep- tion of 4 I 2 years in the service in World War II , my entire career has been devoted to the education of the children of the City of Boston. Never was a man so lucky as I to have achieved his one ambition; namely, to be appointed Head Master of Boston Latin School. No honor accorded to me can ever compete with this. I have enjoyed my years here at Boston Latin School and feel that I have accomplished much in the advancement of the teaching-learning situation. Often has the precept of Horace come to my mind; Nil ardui mortalibus est . . . (Nothing is too difficult for human beings to do.) The old adage is also true - where there is a will, there is a way - and I have always believed in it. Along the trail, of course, there were a few disappointments but, in the larger picture, the accomplishments have stood out. This school has a fine tradition and turns out excellent scholars, citizens, and leaders, who have been well trained, and this training serves them in good stead in future life. Latin School is really a state of mind. Pride in doing one ' s work separates the Latin School student from the pack. Work plus desire are the two great virtues inculcated in our students which produce the greatest of all virtues, self- discipline. The road is long, arduous and, at times, wearisome, but the results are inspiring. Although we experi- enced turbulent times , the school was able to weather them because the administration showed the leadership which is required in times of crises. We did not shrink from our duty. It is most fitting that the Class of 1976 should be the finest all-round class since I have been here in the school as Head Master. To them, I wish Godspeed in their voyage of life, and I know that, with the priceless training they have received here, they will all do well in life. Finally, in the words of the Apostle Paul, I HAVE FOUGHT THE GOOD FIGHT. I HAVE FINISHED THE COURSE. I HAVE KEPT THE FAITH. Its first public performance was during the well- received Up With People concert in the auditorium. Its leader, Mr. Mark Berger (of French and Spanish fame) was catapulted to superstar- dom overnight. The group, officially billed as One Hand Clapping and affectionately known as Berger’s Bits, has Ms. Portman, Mr. Averill and Mr. Coffey as members. It has created quite a stir at this venerable institution of learning. The following photos illustrate what has occurred since then . . . It all sianed innocently at the concen . . . Before long, head fetishists had begun following Mr. Berger around, begging him to sing. He complies happily (above). Little did he know that superstardom would turn out to be a bummer! 48 ”Oh, Mark is such a Cutie-pie. What! I You mean that guy with the funny white shoes and the Telly Savalas” hairdoo!? To avoid his fans, Mr. B. is seen disguised as a lumberjack in a secluded reson on the Riviera . 49 Class Officers FRED E. BERKOWITZ Secretary PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE O youth, whose hope is high, Who dost to truth aspire , Whether thou live or die , O look not back nor tire . ’ ’ - Bridges Today is the age of the cynic. With Watergate, unemploy- ment, crime, and inflation, people are growing weary of ideals and want only to be left to themselves. All institutions are being questioned: government, the church, schools. Even the viability of cities, the epitome of civilization, is coming under doubt. One can read in the newspapers of families thrown into poverty by recession and for whom the American dream has soured. In this the Bicentennial Year one sees many flag-waving parades, but little national spirit. Yet the sixties sensed the tantalizing promise of Camelot. What has happened? Some have their own answers, others are baffled, but it is up to us - confident, idealistic youth - to inspire America and try to forge change; not through anarchic bombings or bloody revolutions, but with a concept of truth and the desire to make life better for our fellow man. Still, idealism is not enough. It is through education that one acquires the force to influence society. The study of the liberal arts at B.L.S. has given us this power. Now, we have only to use it. Confident that the Class of 1976 will never lose sight of the truth, I extend my congratulations to you for your achieve- ments thus far. I would like also to thank the faculty and administration, led by Dr. Wilfred L. O ' Leary, for their invaluable instruction and stimulation. Sincerely yours, ROBERT THOMAS PERO KLYDE W. SIEGFRIED! FRED PETE 75 Class. . . - The beginning of a new decade and a new experience for us at Latin School. Some of us would make it in six years, others in seven or eight, still others wouldn ' t make it at all. It was going to be hard; six years of tardy bells and late passes, B schedule and corridor patrol, graded homework, graded conduct, quizzes and tests every day, summer book lists, and up and down staircases. Report cards and honor roll, not to mention being hissed at as sixies. Perhaps one of us was unfortunate enough to buy a key to the elevator or a ticket to the fourth floor swimming pool . We were introduced to the language which has lent its name to the school. To a few Latin would become an escape, an enjoyable path to the past; for most of us it would turn out to be a headache, for which the only remedy was grin and bear it,” or perhaps visit the Harvard Coop. As the final bell rang that first year, we burst out of our rooms with a deafening roar - . As we raced down the corridors for the last time that year we bid farewell to our friends for the summer. Some we would see next year, others never again. It seemed that summer had just begun when we returned to the hallowed halls of B.L.S. agonizing over the seven books which we all had diligently read from our summer reading list. Our fivesie year was one of transition. Changes in the school routine had become a frequent occurrence. The time-honored tradition of suit coats and ties was felled by the Supreme Court ax. The city wide student strike resulted in an attack upon the school by English High stu- dents. The scheduling was altered with new Futility periods and the seven period day. It was a great year for athletics with the football team , the track team , and the crew team all going unbeaten - giving Latin its best over-all athletic season in years, and proving to oui critics that our bodies as well as our minds were well developed . June arrived; many of us would soon be freshmen. However, a few liked Class V so much they remained behind to do it all over again. We were now in our first year of high school. The curriculum became progressively more difficult and varied. In English we were introduced to Shakespeare, verse, and oral composition. Declamation had become a monthly routine which cre- ated anxiety in the best of us. In Latin we met Caesar whom we came to know and love. In our first modern language (whether we parlez-voused or Sprachensied ) we explored such oddities as irregular verbs and idio(t)matic constmc- tions. However, the year will be remembered by all of us as the one which first witnessed the matriculation of girls into the IV-B Class. The all male tradition, in effect since 1635, had been broken by a Supreme Coun decision against public schools which discriminated between the sexes. There was much controversy but we must admit that girls haven ' t been the distraction many had anticipated . We, the survivors of three years of BLS, were joined by the incoming freshmen (and freshwomen) as the halfway point in our careers here was passed . Many of us became deeply interested and involved in extracurricular activities during our sophomore year. Some actively participated in I. V. sports in the hope of being an All-American Senior. There was also that Silent Majority which couldn ' t have cared less or was more into chemistry, math, or Latin. The concept of Cultural Pluralism manifested itself in the founding and expansion of the Irish Historical and Italian Cultural Societies. Our Junior year - the one that really counts” - began. For many it would be their hardest, as they strove to maintain their high averages for the benefit of college admissions ' boards. Others who weren ' t as farsighted or as dedicated were hurt when those infamous class ' Ranks ' appeared. In a way, their futures had been determined - by a computer. We found out about the PSATs, SATs, and Achievements. For some the results brought pleasure, while for others the world try harder next year” weren ' t much of a relief. 76 . . . Chronicle The Football team had an 8-2 season record; just three points away from being undefeated and possibly State Champs. Among the players, our classmates turned in good performances at key positions. They were All-City slotback Bletzer; Defensive End Colantuono; Guard Matthews; Defensive Tackle DeVirgilio, and Defensive Back Williams. The T4-I5 Hockey. squad was one of the best teams Latin has ever had. The team finished second in the city league with a 13-3-1 record but lost to Malden Catholic 3-1 in the ' States ' . A1 Spicer had a great year in the nets for BLS with help up front from Maneikis, Fender, Bletzer, O’Connor and Neelon. Against strong competition the Latin basketball team finished with an 8-12 season. Top scorer Joe Minihan was a stand- out for the Latin five throughout the season. The Baseball team also suffered a disappointing loss in the ' State ' after finishing the season with a fantastic 17-2 record. Catcher Frank Harrison and rifle armed Charlie Maneikis turned in key performances. The team lost Mario Perella early with a broken ankle but Chuck DeVirgilio remained as designated hitter throughout the year. The Seniors open campus left us, as juniors, in sole control of BLS. We received our rings hoping that the date on the side wouldn’t be wrong for some of us. Our class ran a few dances that turned out successfully and promised to put money in our treasury . Our years at Latin School were ending, but we all looked forward to our last and promised to make it our best. An extraordinary Federal Court decision implemented at the beginning of our final year promised even more changes in the student body. Judge W. A. Garrity in his Phase II desegregation order stipulated that thirty-five percent of the ' entering classes {yi and IVB) come from minority groups. When they arrived we welcomed them warmly and a number of us offered our services as tutors should the need arise. We fervently hoped that they would come to know and love Alma Mater (as we had) a®id we tried to convey to them the idea that many matres do not appear quite as almae as they should in the early years of one ' s relationship. The beginning of our senior year was a hectic time. There was always a meeting to go to or a college deadline to meet. All of us got a second chance at the SAT ' s and tried to improve our class ranks. The Teachers Strike in September gave us a surprise respite from classes for a week and created some premature cases of Senioritis . Out last year at the school was the best of times for some and the worst for others. For some it meant Flexible Campus jobs or internships, for others it meant going to between one and five different Advanced Placement classes a day, for many it became sheer boredom. For a few it meant acceptance by the college of their choice. For others it was rejection and frustration. Somehow, strangely enough, this was the time that we developed our most meaningful relationships with other classmates. We seemed to appreciate each other more than at any other time in our Latin School years. Perhaps our friends were the real reason many of us stuck through it all. As our final days approached we began to ponder about our separate futures. ' • ' It wasn’t a very rewarmng year for sports. The Football Team finished with a disappointing 3-6 record. The Hockey team found a season record of 8-7-2 to be of little solace. The basketball team had its poorest record in years. Two of our bettefTeams were the Swimming and Track powers, winning the City and Regimental Championships, respectively. The girls’ athletio teams, however, made strong showings in Volleyball, Basketball, and Swimming. In April , most of us received answers from colleges , and the thickness of an envelope said it all . For the most part , our next four years were thereby determined . The trip to Bermuda allowed many to relieve the tensions that had built up during the past eight months. Soon to come would be the Prom, and our last official act as seniors - Graduation. The years passed so quickly. They were years of change and development; hope and excitement; joy and sadness. To those who helped transform a dream in 1970 to a reality in 1976, we pay sincere tribute . , . 77 MCE KEL MAURICE JOHN KELLEHER Show mu a good loser and I will show you a mental case. It was a heartbreaking season from the outset. The Wolfpack lost 3-0 to Medford and suffered back-to-back losses to Archbishop Williams and Newton Nonh. Five of the six losses were by one touchdown or less. Nonetheless, the Pack played with great intensity and won the respect of its opponents. The team was bolstered by one of the best defensive lines in the State, led by Co-Capt. Cun Bletzer (All-Scholastic) and Mike Colantuono, accompanied by the great tackles of Chuck DeVirgilio and Mike Festa. The Offense really didn ' t get going until it erupted for 24 points in the ' Turkey Bowl ' . no Senior halfback Frank Harrison (26 carries - 120 yards) and junior fullback Tim Mulvey (22 carries - 104 yards) were voted CO-MVP ' s of the Latin - English game. The season thus ended on a bright note with the 24-6 victory. The win was the Wolf- pack ' s ninth consecutive against English and it now has a 42-34-13 record in the Thanksgiving Day Classic. Next year seems a promising one for team with the return of lettermen led by quarterback Michelowski , Fullback Mulvey, and Linebacker Festa. L. toR.: Conroy, McCarthy, Michelowski, Murray. Tom Young, who dominated the 45 yd. hurdles and high-jumps last year, was injured and unable to compete. Many dual meets were tied or lost by a slim margin. The outstanding seniors on the team were Mike Norton, Denny Williams, Mike Harvey, Steve Maguire, Mike Mulhern, John Casey, Charles Cavas. The team slowly improved , . . and wound up win- ning the Regimental Championships. As usual the unique brand of Latin camaraderie and teamwork made them unrivaled relay mnners; among the top in the state. The great spirit and determination shown by all members of the team kept them in the mnning. John Casey elbows his way around, opening the way. In one of the most exciting games of the season the pack suffered a 4-3 loss at the hands of Southie on two controversial South Boston tallies. Led by captain Joe Minihan and the only other returning letterman, Dennis McCarron, the team had to contend with a schedule consisting of such powerhouses as English, Technical, and Dorchester. Because of injuries, illnesses, and ineligibilities the Wolfpack never really got it together. The next few years look bright for the hoopsters with the likes of juniors Ed Duffy and Steve Wool, sophomore Paul Little, and freshman Alan James returning to bring the City League Crown to Boston Latin. Varsity and Junior Varsity teams would like to thank Coach Cos- tello and Coach Pearson for their dedication and instmction. 1 24 The only way we’re gonna win is by sneaking me in. The Wrestling team this year had for the first time a team that could beat cross town rival Boston Tech. The wrestlers defeated Tech in their dual meet by a score of 43-15. In their other matches they defeated Roslin- dale High twice by scores of 39-27 and 42- 20. In their only defeat, Latin lost to Cam- bridge Latin by the small margin of 3 points, 39-36. In this meet Gary Halzel had pinned his opponent, but the referee did not see it in time and subsequently he forfeited the match because of a head injury. In the city tournament that six schools entered, Latin took third place, behind Catholic Memorial and Rindge Tech. Seven of our wrestlers placed in the competition that featured George Barrett winning his first three matches by pins. George lost in the final round to Chester Brown of Tech who subsequently won the most valuable wrestler trophy for the tournament. George Barrett and Steve Walter took seconds, Luke Slade and a young lad named Kwan took thirds. Bill Nickerson, Tim Dyer and our light- weight wrestler Mazzarello took fourths. Coach Joe Aiello who is a former U MASS wrestler did a fine job his first year with the aid of CO captains George Barrett and Pete Bertucci. The members of the team wish to express their appreciation to him for putting in so much of his time on an unfunded pro- gram. We are looking for another fine sea- son next year. Cheerleaders Seniors: Michele Barbar, Pam Brown, Beth Foeley Juniors; Anne Dever, Cathy McMullen, Margie Sagan Sophomores; Patti Gerbutavich, Audrey Nelligan, Ellen Moy, Narda Rob- inson, Patty Supple, Donna Walsh. In the Spring of 1974, the girls of BLS replaced Boston Latin Academy. We spent many hours preparing for the 1974 sea- son. Unfortunately, we did not have a coach, so we were faced with many difficulties. Captain Pam Brown kept our squad in line to cheer on the football, basketball, and hockey teams. At mid season three girls dropped out and six new girls were initiated into the ranks. Pam Brown and Beth Foeley, who, at the start knew little about cheerleading, were chosen as co-captains and spent many hours organizing and inventing new routines. Unfortunately the girls were unable to help the teams improve their records. Next year’s leaders of spirit should be more spectacular with six one-year veterans and two two-year veterans, Anne Dever and Margie Sagan, who will be the new co-captains, will show off their Purple Power. ♦ 127 Girl ' s i, .o.: K. ... .. w... - -a.™. r;.x rror c-, ;r:r;i.rc: S!; [ ' «iwo. 7T.:., ' 0,?ol, .. Asian Cultures The Asian Cultures Club had another successful year! With the strong support of many members, the club participated in many programs in Chinatown. Our club sponsored many events with clubs from other schools. On Chinese New Year a show was staged in the Latin Auditorium. The ceremonial Lion Dance and Martial Arts Demonstration were performed by its members. Chinese Folk Dances were performed by members of the Chinese -American Society of Boston Latin Academy. China Night, a variety show, was also staged at the Latin Auditorium on June 11. The Show was the result of months of hard work by members of A.C.C. and C.A.S. The annual banquet concluded the year ' s activities. The Asian Cultures Club would like to thank its spon- sors, Mr. Berger and Mr. Mosher. We would also like to express our gratitude to the members of Latin Academy ' s Chinese- American Society for their fervent support. PHOTOGRAPHERS: Lino Tontodonato, Vi Bichnevicius As a student newspaper, the ARGO still has a long way to go, but it has made a good come-back from the desert of Mimeograph-dom which it reached last year. The paper is more a recorder of school events than a leader of vociferous criticism and a medium for student-inspired change , but this characteristic is more an indicator of the times than an ything else. It has made some ventures into the realm of local and national news , but not enough to make an impression . It is hoped that the increased enthusiasm of students and the leadership of Editor Chris Kenneally will continue to improve the quality of the publication. 149 Class VI Band Junior Stage Band 150 ,ook wnai is flexible Campus:, How About Co- r HC« ion| A.P.
