Powers • r - :C LIBER ACTORUM 1975 Boston Latin School Boston, Massachusetts at ■sirv IdbNbMHMdUMkM ‘ v The class of nineteen seventy-five respectfully dedicates this edition of the Liber Actorum to Mr. Bernard B. Pheeny. For many more years than we have lived, Mr. Pheeny ennobled the austere confines of room 133 by his compassionate approach while patiently coaxing us through the pages of history and illuminating for us the chronicle of man. Although hobbled by polio for nearly a lifetime we never heard him whine, never heard him complain of his debilitating affliction. The quiet heroic example of this quietly heroic man has been a benign inspiration for all of us. To him we say fondly in the tongue of the ancients: OTIO PER MULTOS ANNOS FRUATUR. f ■ V ' • (full i !hn l • 1 1 • i i i 6 ADMINISTRATION WILFRED L. O ' LEARY ’25 Headmaster Nicholas Murray Butler, late president of Columbia University, once said that Education truly conceived is spiritual growth toward intellec- tual and moral perfection and is not an artificial process to be carried on according to mechanical formulas to a purely material end.” There are utilities higher and utilities lower, and if a school in its zeal to lay the foundation for that higher intellectual and spiritual life which consti- tutes humanity’s full stature, it would sacrifice the higher utilities to the lower. Fortunately the class of 1975, along with the legions of past gradu- ates, has received a training in the Humanities based on spiritual growth toward intellectual and moral perfection.” Because of this edu- cation, you are fortified with knowledge and the know-how which will enable you to live the good life. Like the Latin School men of the past, you will be able to stand up and be counted upon to do your duty no matter what the cost. Let the cause be just, you will be its defender, thereby inspiring those of lesser moral fiber. You will be leaders in our society of tomorrow, never forgetting the example of hosts of leaders whose names adorned our hallowed hall. The latter excelled in many fields of endeavor but they all had one thing in common — a resolute determination to do their duty and excel in the area with which their Creator so generously endowed them. Plato tells us, For a man to conquer himself is the first and best of all victories.” The long hard road through the Latin School which you have traversed proves the Philosopher’s statement. You have done this by acquiring SELF-DISCIPLINE, the sine-qua-non for success in life. You have the Humanities to thank for that priceless virtue. Be never unmindful of the debt you owe your Masters, parents and the good people of the City of Boston who made it possible for you the privilege of attending this venerable institution. Be loyal to B.L.S., aid her in every way, make her cause your cause. Make it a goal to help future Latin School Boys to achieve a college education by being a gen- erous donor to the Scholarship Funds. Above all heed the admonition of Horace, Aequam memento rebus in arduis servare mentem.” SECRETARIAL STAFF mrs. McCarthy mrs. curadossi, MRS. MAHONEY MISSING MRS. LYONS MRS. TOPLYN Aide EDWIN F. ROONEY President We, the members of the class of 1975 have reached the goal which a short time ago may have seemed so very distant and perhaps unattainable, as was the case of many. For our days as students at the Boston Latin School have come to a victorious end and the time has come for us to take our places among the prestigious alumni. Retracing the steps of constructive changes, preserved traditions and progressive achievements which have taken us through an edu- cation not only outstanding, but unique, w f e can justly be proud. It is this education which has tested our unselfishness, dedication and maturity at times to the point of resentment, that has prepared us to meet the challenges of an uncertain future and to stand out as leaders in society, as have so many of the Latin School men before us. On behalf of the Class of 1975, 1 extend our thanks to all of those who have made our graduation possible, especially Dr. O’Leary, our teachers, and our parents. To the members of the Class of 1975, 1 extend my congratulations and sincere wishes for every success and happiness in the years to come. 32 ROBERT NG Secretary ' Class Committee Raymond J Vaughn CHAIRMAN Gregory J Bukuras Eugene T Carroll Joseph E Devlin Matthew D George John P Ollen Patrick J. ATHLETICAE Widely known for her traditional liberal arts education and her ability to offer students the opportunity to learn, Boston Latin firmly established herself as an athletic power in Eastern Massachusetts during the 1974-75 school year. In 1973, Latin finished in third place in combined sport competi- tion among all Division I high schools behind Catholic Memorial and Scituate. But the Class of 75’ is bound to surpass even this feat. The school year started a week late this past fall because of disruption in the Boston Public schools. To the regret of the football players, this led to an extra week of double sessions. But this week’s delay of workouts seemed to help more than hurt more as the Football team regained its hold on the city title after a year’s absence. They recorded an 8-2 season, just three points away from being undefeated and possibly the state championship. Other fall sports were just as ' successful ' as football was for Boston Latin. The Soccer team, rebounding extremely well from last year’s 0-12 season, finished with an 8-8 record in an always tough City ' League. Highlight of the season was a 2-0 upset victory in the season finale against rival English, defending state champs. The Cross Country team made routine again this year when they won another City and Regimental title to add to its string of championships. A lot was expected from our winter sports’ teams. And as you know, they did not disappoint us one bit. The Swimming team won its fifth straight City Championship. A re-organized and enthusiastic Wrestling team recorded another winning season with three wins and two losses. And of course, the Hockey team played tremendously this year as they qualified for the City Championship finals and showed an outstanding amount of poise in the state tourney. No matter how great the exploits of other teams were, none of them can compare with performances of the 7 4- 7 5 Latin Indoor Track team. The team’s final record was thirteen wins without a single defeat in a season which included exciting victories over fine teams such as Xaverian, Acton- Boxboro, and defending state champs, Rindge Tech. In post-season meets, the squad again won the City and Regimental titles, and almost won the state championship, losing on a fluke. The spring sports, Baseball, Golf, Outdoor Track, and Sailing, also promise to have successful and meaningful seasons just like last year. As the Latin teams drew considerable crowds at their sporting events this year, many of the seniors not participating in sports really came out to cheer their classmates on. Most predominant of these seniors were: Don Ostiguy. Ken Connolly. ’’Buzz Regan. Mike Sheehy. Gene Carroll. Joe ' Celeste. John Ollen.Joe Mahoney, and Bill Fahey. On behalf of the Liber Actorum Sports Staff of 1975. we would like to congratulate the athletes and the Class of 1975 on a truly successful and memorable year. Carl D’Amato Fran Cusack Paul Everson Pete Lenz Bob Marini Bill MacFarland Jim McGrath Bob Miller Frank O’Brien Pat Quinn Jim Rooney Steve Santangelo Tom Yotts George Munro Dave Chin — EDITOR Jimmy O’Sullivan — EDITOR 100 E ■ ' ■ ; , ' f I Hockey This ”4- 7 5 hockey squad was one of the best teams Latin has ever had. With last year’s 11-5-3 state tournament record on the line, the Wolfpack, behind all-city co-captains. Jack O’Callahan and Jack Kelley, finished the season with an even more impressive 13-3-1 record. They not only advanced to the state tourney again, but also to the city championship finals. Latin opened it ' s season with a disappointing loss to a tough Charlestowm team, a game which was a lot closer than the score indicated. But the team bounced back from this defeat with a strong 1-4 victory over South Boston, last year’s runner-up at the state tourney. Other highlights of the season were an 8-6 victory over South Shore league champions Hanover, a 4-3 win over Charles- town and a 5-5 tie against Southie. B.L.S. claimed second place in the City League, thus earning a berth in the City Championship. In the first round Latin defeated Division II titlists Roslindale 4-1, and advanced to the finals. But all-state forward Kevin Goughlin and his South Boston team were not to be denied their sixth straight city title as Southie won. For the second straight season Latin entered the State Tournament, reinforcing the fact that the school has become a prominent power in Division I competition. The squad entered their first game as underdogs, but they beat Melrose of the Middlesex League in overtime by the score of 4- 3. The Wolfpack overcame three-one goal deficits as they showed little fatigue. The game was won on a Jack O’Callahan goal halfway through the extra period. In it’s second game, Latin faced defending state champs Malden Catholic, who last year knocked the pack out of the tourney with a 9-2 victory. But this year the team entered the game with fire in their eyes” and outclassed the Catholic leaguers in every phase of the game. Unfortu- nately, MC’s all-s tate goalie Dave Norton turned aside all of Latin’s shots except one, when Tom Yotts picked up a rebound of a Jack Kelley slapshot and scored in the first period. Although Latin lost the game 3-1, the players have absolutely nothing to be ashamed LATIN 4 Charlestown South Boston 4 6 Hyde Park 0 6 East Boston 1 3 Technical 0 2 Charlestown 3 5 South Boston 5 8 Hyde Park 1 5 East Boston 4 9 English 5 6 Technical 0 4 Charlestown 3 8 Hanover 6 1 South Boston 6 6 Hyde Park 1 6 East Boston 3 6 Technical 2 CITi ' CHAMPIONSHIP 4 Roslindale 1 2 South Boston 8 STATE TOURNEY 4 Melrose (OT) 3 1 Malden Cath. 3 of. The keys to the team’s success lie in the leadership of Jack Kelley and Jack O’Cal- lahan, the checking of Tom Yotts, Joe Duggan, and Joe Nelligan, and the hustle of Ron Cavalieri, Matt King and Phil Olsen. Strong performances w-ere also shown by- Tom Maciejko, juniors A1 Spicer and Charlie Maniekus, and freshmen Jody Fitzger- ald and Sean O’Connor. The Latin nine is led by returning letterman Charlie Peterson who is the ace of the pitching staff. The offense will consist of Joe Celeste, Tom Yotts, Joe Nelligan, and Phil Olsen who will bring home the runs with their power and timely hitting. Seniors Frank DeLuca, Chris Connors, Shawn Fitzgerald, along with juniors Frank Harrison, south- paw Mario Perella, and Charlie Maneikus will beef up the already potent lineup. FIRST ROW: Perella, Yotts, Maneikus, Celeste, Pelruzziello, Tang, Bucldey, Olsen, Nelligan, Feloni, Coach Dave Coleman. SECOND ROW Ostiguy, DeLuca, Fitzgerald, Hani fin, Fester, Connors, Peterson, DeVirgilio, Harrison Cross Country There is a certain fellowship amongst cross country runners. In following their strict regimen they realize a sense of brotherhood whose presence is not as easily recognizable in other individualistic sports. This sense characterized the Latin squad throughout its 1974 program; it has supplemented victory, mocked defeat and provided each runner with a special satisfaction that is necessary for one to continue. This year’s Cross Country team once again dominated the City League. The Latin team, unaffected by the inconveniences of Boston’s busing plan, fielded the largest number of participants and for the fourth consecutive year won the City and Regimental Championships. Latin was led to a 10-4 season by co-captains Steve Cunningham and Mike Drummy. Other members of the team include seniors George Munro, Jim Hurley, Bob Marini, and Paul Roddy, junior Mike Norton, and sophomores Chris Reid, Fred Geyer, and Bruce MacFarland. In the state championship held at Franklin Park, Latin finished 11th in the Class A meet as Steve Cunningham came in 9th out of a field of nearly 400 participants. Chris Reid also placed very well in the junior division. Although many seniors are graduating from this year’s squad, Latin will continue to be a dominant team in this die-hard competitive sport. FIRST ROW: Mello, Mitchell, Wong, W. Cho, Reid, Geragty, W Cho, MuJkem. SECOND ROW: Marini, MacFarland, Norton, Keskula, W Lee, Tedesco, Hurley, D. Lee THIRD ROW: Coach Fred Irons, Foley, Drummy (co-capt.), Cunningham (co-capt.), Munro (mascot), Hart, Toplyn, Harrington, Hawkins, Geyer, McCarthy. Outdoor Track Preview ' 75 After a fine yet disappointing indoor season, the outdoor track team will try to place in the state meet. It is a proficient team with very capable runners competing in each event The sprinters are Paul Quarles and Jerry Herman who run the 100 and 220 respectively. Hurdlers are Tom Young with the 120 highs and Dennis Williams with the 180 lows. Bob Marini is a steady 440 runner, while George Munro, Mike Norton, and Mike McCarthy compete in events from the 440 to the mile meets. The distance runners are Mike Drummy and Rick Foley who run the mile and Steve Cunningham competes in the two mile event. There are also many underclassmen such as Chris Reid, Willie Wong, and Fred Geyer who are long distance runners. In the field events we have Mike Uva throwing the discus, Dave Gamache pole vaulting, and John MacDonald throwing the javelin. These people face a tough schedule with many suburban teams coming in, but again the Latin track team will show them who is the boss and be undefeated. no I FRONT ROW; Sienkiewicz, Dolhert MIDDLE ROW Collins, Federiconi, Quinn, Mr. Averill BACK ROW Fondation, Fitzpatrick. 1 1 1 Sailing Team The Boston Latin Sailing Team had a fine 1974 season as it cruised to a 6-1 record. Competing mainly against private schools at Pleasure Bay in South Boston, Latin competely destroyed Commonwealth and Long- meadow to add to their list of victories. While at partial strength how- ever, Latin lost its only meet to Newton early in the season. Racing against 20 other teams, Latin captured 3rd place in the Eastern Mass. Sailing Championship as they finished strong behind Milton Academy and Southie. This, along with their smooth performance dur- ing the 74 season, showed a marked improvement over the year before. The strength of team lies in the sailing savvy and experience of Pat Quinn, Joe Sienkiewicz, and Lenny Dolhert to pick up the needed points in competition. Since nearly the entire team, comprised of mem- bers Lenny (I got the tiller) Dolhert, Joe Sienkiewicz, Pat Quinn, Carlo Federiconi, Ed Fitzpatrick, Bill Foley, Jim Laffan, Marty Nee, and Tim Collins, will return this season with more experience and perseverance along with help from Larry Fondation, they are definitely projected to do even better this season under the tactful guidance of Commodore Warren Averill. Better than a 6-1 record, hey — this team might just go all the way! Latin is the only public school in Boston with a sailing team since other schools simply cannot afford one or just lack the interest to organ- ize one. The Latin Sailing Team, limited to race against private schools, has just started to make their presence and developed skills known not only to surrounding schools, but also to students in our own school. This year the spr ing season proved to be interesting, enjoyable, and somewhat successful. The first boat finished second. The second boat finished second. And the girls finished first. The first boat, suffering from the athletic apologia of loss of seniors, was forced to benefit as best it could from the occasional appearances of veteran oarsmen Mike Lynch, Joe McDonald, and Frank O’Brien. The experience and crew know-how of these three rowers complemented the somewhat over- exuberant brawn of rookies Pat Donovan, Tim O’Connor and Joe Fleming. Rounding out the first boat were strong strokemen Sean Teehan and Kenny (Ron’s brother) Zeghibe. Occasional rowers on the first boat Tony Deban, Paul Tierney, Paul D’ Amato, Peter Walsh and Jay Mulhern. The first boat was under the stern direction of Coach Carmine Vara. The second boat finished second in its races against Tech. The boat was coxed by a dedicated Dick Blais and rowed by 8 kids on th e dock. By themselves and by contrast, the girls’ boat was truly the standout of the spring season. Recruited by Mr. Vara and coached by Tony Abruzzese, the girls won all their races and added a badly needed degree of athletic legitimacy to the season. The boat was coxed by Maureen Davoren (Maureen was also the only Latin rower to break an oar) and was rowed by most of the sophomore girls at one time or another. In the fall season the first boat w r as coxed by Dick Blais and rowed by Sean Teehan, Kenny Zeghibe, Peter Walsh, Joe McDonald, Paul Tierney, Frank O’Brien, Paul Baltusis and Kevin Kerr. The fall season was less successful than the spring season but just as enjoyable. The first boat finished 3rd in the final standings. The second boat again came in second, but the girls did not row’ because of football. The entire crew ' team wishes to thank Mr. Vara for his time and effort on our behalf. 112 No Eagl es hut a Lot of Aces Carangelo, Gardner, Trocki (co-capt.), Everson (co-capt.), Griffin, Flaherty, McGowan Golf This year promises to be another fine season for Latin’s Golf team. With most of last year’s team returning, another championship is expected. Latin will be led by returning lettermen Bill Trocki, Paul Everson and Bill Sinnott who have had a lot of playing experience in Boston area golf courses and also those on the Cape. Also contributing to the Latin cause at the Wright Golf Course will be Bobby McGowan, Bob Carangelo and Mike Flaherty. The entire team wishes to thank Mr. Stacey Johnson for his inspiration and devotion. I Soccer Playing in the tough City League, a more experienced Latin Soccer team made a fine come- back this season. Their comeback was complete when everything clicked in the season finale to give them a 2-0 shutout over English. After a year of rebuilding, Latin finished the season with an 8-8 record and a lot of good memories. A forward line of all-star John Gray, Felipe and Victor Quintero, and Jim Mcgrath gave Latin the scoring punch needed The halfbacks, all-star John Lowe, Pete Lenz, and Tom Maciejko did a fine job of setting up plays and clearing the middle of the field of defenders. A combination of fullbacks Vic Kingsley, Marty Zeller, Bob Brown and all-star goalie Fran Cusack posted six shutouts for Latin. Help from the bench was in the form of Bob Krauss, A1 Tedesco, Jim O’Sullivan, Ricardo Calleja, Pete Senopoulos, Vincent Maestro, and Dennis Boyd. The entire team wishes to thank Coach Evans for the time and energy he has devoted and his assistant Ken Bradshaw. The B.L.S. 1975 Indoor Track team, billed as the best ever at the Latin School” by Coach Fred Irons, combined awesome depth with outstanding individual performances to leave many a rival team gasping in defeat on its way to an undefeated 13-0 season, Boston City Division I Championship, and the Regimental Championship. Among Latin’s victories were wins over three formerly unbeaten league champs; Xaverian, Acton-Boxboro, and Rindge Tech who were also the Class D State Champions, plus wins over always tough Catholic Memorial and B. C. High. These non-league victories strengthen Latin’s claim of being one of the best dual-meet teams in the state, if not the best. , Leading the way for the Wolfpack speedsters were Paul Quarles and Jim Rooney in the 50-yard dash, Gerry Herman and Dennis Williams in the 300, and George Munro and Bob Marini in the 600. It was a rare occasion when they didn’t finish one-two in their respective races. Munro, Marini, Herman, and Williams also combined on a devastating relay team. Helpful contributions were also made by Kai Yuen, Peter Lim, and Tom Donohue in the 50, John Casey and Frank Harrison in the 300, Mike Harvey and Willie Wong in the 600. The 45 yard hurdles were dominated largely by Tom Young with help from Mike Mulhern and Tim Hart. In the longer distances, Steve Cunningham set the pace in the 2 mile along with Chris Reid. Mike Drummy led the way for milers Rick Foley, Jim Hurley, and Fred Geyer, while Mike McCarthy, Mike Norton and Bruce MacFarland made up the Purple 1000 yard contingent. In the field events, Tom Young and Dennis Williams leaped their way to a number of victories in the High Jump with the occasional help of Steve MaGuire. In the shotput, strong men Mike Uva and John MacDonald were contested by few. Some of the up and coming stars of the future who participated on the J.V. level this year are B. Davenport, B. Geraghty, J. Hawkins, M Toplyn, T. Wilkerson, D. Keskula, W. Tate, L. Mulhern, M. Mulhern, B. Mello, and J. Harrington. The team thanks Fred Irons for his valuable time and coaching and also for his unfearing confidence which showed them the way all year long. Often Grueling — but Always . . . Rewarding Regimental Champs l 19 LATIN Basketball The Latin five compiled a record of 8-12 in a season where many gamps could have gone either way The Wolf pack was led by top scorer, junior Joe Minihan, the excellent two-way play of center Bill Greene and guard Bobby Miller, the playmaking of Chuck McCallum, and the fine play of forwards Vic Kingsley, Steve Kelly, and swingman Chris Connors. The Wolfpack won four out of its first five games, including an upset win over Hyde Park, but then lost two very close games in a row. Despite many fine hustling efforts, the team suffered numerous frustrating losses the rest of the way. The biggest highlight of the season was a near upset victory over powerful English. Tough wins over Brighton and South Boston made the season a respectable one. Returning next year are captain Joe Minihan, forward Dennis McCarron, and many young promising players from the J.V. squad. The club wishes to thank Coach Costello and Coach Cohen for their very ' hard work and dedication throughout the entire season. 72 Jeremiah Burke 49 54 Weymouth South 72 54 Hyde Park 48 70 South Boston 52 62 Copley 37 54 BC High 57 (OT) 64 Dorchester 70 35 Technical 74 56 English 63 75 Jeremiah Burke 53 51 Hyde Park 62 65 South Boston 53 86 Copley 56 58 Brighton 51 63 BC High 76 55 Dorchester 76 39 English 66 57 Technical 71 60 Weymouth South 72 57 Brighton 68 FIRST ROW: Morris, McCallum (co-capt), Miller (co-capt), Roache, Sullivan. Three seniors, Eugene Carroll, Peter Lenz, and Art Daley however, put ever- ything together and organized a team again. The team had a 3-2 record and came in 4th in the Boston City Tourna- ment. Eugene Carroll and Peter Lenz finished 2nd in their respective weight classes. Other wrestlers who placed in competition were Pete Bertucci, Steve Walter, Luke Slade, George Barrett, Bill Nickerson, and Darrell Spears. Art Daley would have placed in the tourna- ment also, if he had not suffered a severe back injury. The entire team should be congratu- lated for not only their interest in wres- tling, but also their perseverance for a good season” despite the problems they had faced before competition began. Santangelo, who placed third in the New England Interscholastic Diving Meet, was awarded the Max Levine Trophy based on swimming ability and scholastic achievement. Connors was the Dr. Joseph O’Leary Unsung Hero Award winner. Butler, who fared very well in the state meet, received the Colonel Edward Kelly Most Valuable Swimmer Trophy.
