Many things made him a special person to the mem- bers of the Latin School community. A love of books, rare teaching ability, a fine sense of humor, and a generous and sincere manner all combined to make a superior teacher and a true friend. Those who knew him will always be a little richer for having known him, and those who didn’t will have missed knowing a unique human being. The Liber Actorum joins the rest of Latin School in wishing him a fruitful and happy retirement. 5 An Active Interest . A Personal Touch 0 0 Mrs. Marie Cleary also ends her teaching career this year. Dedication, preparation, and knowledge always marked her classes. A special rap{x rt with her students enabled her to put life into the study of an ancient lan- guage. A great pan of her success was due to her warm and outgoing per- sonality, while an active interest in her students as people lent a personal touch to her instruction. All the qualities which made her a stimulating teacher will be sorely missed. The Libra Actorum and the Latin School hope that her retirement will be as fulfilling as her teaching career. 7 The Ever Present Spirit , . . f ! I t ! i [1 8 . . . That is Boston Latin School 9 Mrs. McCarthy Mrs. Mahoney Mrs. Lyons Amanuenses Wilfred L. O’Leary HEAD MASTER ’25 Mrs. Curadossi Aequam Memento Rebus in Arduis Servare Mentem . . . Nicholas Murray Butler, late president of Columbia University, once said that Education truly conceived is spiritual growth toward intellec- tual and moral perfection, and is not an artificial process to be carried on according to mechanical formulas to a purely material end.” There are utilities higher and utilities lower, and if a school in its zeal to lay the foundation for that higher intellectual and spiritual life which consti- tutes humanity’s full stature, it would sacrifice the higher utilities to the lower. Fortunately the class of 1974, along with the legions of past gradu- ates, has received a training in the Humanities based on spiritual growth toward intellectual and moral perfeaion.” Because of this edu- cation, you are fortified with knowledge and the know-how which will enable you to live the good life. Like the Latin School men of the past, you will be able to stand up and be counted upon to do your duty no matter what the cost. Let the cause be just, you will be its defender, thereby inspiring those of lesser moral fiber. You will be leaders in our society of tomorrow, never forgetting the example of hosts of leaders whose names adorned our hallowed hall. The latter excelled in many fields of endeavor but they all had one thing in common — a resolute determination to do their duty and excel in the area with which their Creator so generously endowed them. Plato tells us, For a man to conquer himself is the first and best of all victories.” The long hard road through the Latin School which you have traversed proves the Philosopher’s statement. You have done this by acquiring SELF-DISCIPLINE, the sine-qua-non for success in life. You have the Humanities to thank for that priceless virtue. Be never unmindful of the debt you owe your Masters, parents, and the good people of the City of Boston who made it possible for you the privilege of attending this venerable institution. Be loyal to B.L.S., aid her in every way, make her cause your cause. Make it a goal to help future Latin School Boys to achieve a college education by being a gen- erous donor to the Scholarship Funds. Above all heed the admonition of Horace, Aequam memento rebus in arduis servare mentem-.” TOP SHELF: Ms. Portman, Dr. Gwiazda, Dr McNamara, Messrs: Hannigan, Landngan, Resnick, Tarpcy, Stevens, Waldron. In doing so, we are entering a world which requires much from the individual. We must now ask ourselves, Are we prepared to meet this challenge?” Hopefully we have acquired the maturity neces- sary to face the sometimes stark realities of life. Hopefully we have received the training necessary to seek the most intelligent and just solutions. Hopefully we have obtained the courage necessary to endure and overcome the obstacles w’hich modem society presents. Yet it is only with careful use of these tools, the qualities which Latin School has ins- tilled in us, that we may assume our rightful roles in society. Only then may we institute productive, needed change. We have made a substantial accomplishment through our graduation from this school. Let this be just the beginning of far greater ones. On behalf of the Class of 1974, I wish to extend our deepest thanks to those people whose influence has aided us immeasurably during our years here: the faculty and our parents. With best wishes for all. The best part of the whole time . r September, 1S 68. Over three hundred of us gathered for the ritual first day of school, e had all gone through this ritual before, but this first day was different. It was the first day of a career that has lasted for six years. We -started that career confused and uncertain. No on wa sure whether he belonged to the third that wayld graduate or the two-thirds that would be somewhere else come 1974. We all wondered what the tea Itrs would be kc,‘who the other students were, what the classes would be like. Our curiosity was soon satisfied. We discovered that both students and teachers were a cross section of every type, just like every other group we had ever known. Classes were all business and work from the very first day, much to our dismay. Soon the novelty and strangeness wore off, and we began to get used to the routine. The myste- ries of the ancient tongue were unraveled, and the world of mathematics was explored. We became repcisitories for all the arcane facts necessary to a classical education. Our expert knowl- edge included Roman military strategy, classical physics, English literature, and computer pro- gramming. However, not all of our education took place in the classroom. The years we sjaent at Latin were six of the most turbulent years of modern times. What happened outside the classroom would have more effect on our lives than anything we ever did or learned inside it. A war fought in a jungle 10,000 miles away became the focus of much of the controversy of the 60’s and 70’s. It raised questions bf morality and legality that split the nation. It killed over a mil- lion {aeople and cost billions of dollars. It destroyed a president, and reduced that same man to hiding in the White House in fear of the very people who had elected him. Even as w e graduated, it continued. No one could see any end to it as it spilled over into neighboring countries, spreading the death and destruction so familiar to Indo-China. Streets all over the country erupted in violence. Tension that had been building for years came to the surface and showed that neither blacks nor whites had a monopoly on hatred. Man landed on the moon, culminating the greatest technical effort m history. Vi atergate. A single word that became synonymous with the abuses of power involved in the election of 1972. The crimes attributed to the Nixon AMminis at ion shook the faith of the Ameri- can i ple in thpir government. The people saw .and heard the stories of bugging, break-ins, bur- glary, bribery, obstruction of justice, and political dirty tricks rofdty government officials, and worthed what kkid of person was running their gpvemment. Terror and blackmail became a real and deadly pan of international politics. The Midl ? wa? ' was fought y jAi terrorists in almost every country in Europe, including even the Olympic Vil- lage at ' Miyiichj— All tb e things were far removed from our daily existence, even though they had, and will ' ’-t continud ' to hayq, a great effect upon our lives. However, there war® other events that happened that affected us immediately, direSy, and personally. - — We learned BWSfe aSout unions and strikes than we could from any history cla by virtue of the sight ' of our teachers walking a picket line. A two week strike resulted in a pay raise and better working conditions. One side benefit was the reduction of the number of marking terms from seven to five, as reqyireeHn the new contract. - Ngt only were the teachers on strike. Student unrest over conditions and administration spread ' Tliroughout the Bos«on ' ' School System. Scattered walkouts occurred across the city. A mass meet- ing becwcen the Boston School Committee and students ended in a student walkout at the meeting a dtywick strikgjjf ' the high sch(X)ls. Our neighbors on the other side of Avenue Louis Pasteur moved into a new building, despite letermined efforts by the administrations of both Latin Schools to obtain it for Girls’ Latin. The battle for the new building degenerated into name calling and brought no credit upon anyone involved in the controversy. There were other confre tations with English. Over a hundred English students broke into Latin at the height ! the student strike, resulting in a melee on the front steps. Later, individual assaults on Latin u| dcrdassmen by English students were stopped only by a change in schedules at both schools. On the football field, Latin t x)k its seventh straight Thanksgiving Day game in 1973. 96 The antiquated Aess code was finally revoked. Coats and ties soon became only a memory. Happily, there be no more sweltering spring days, no more jackets worn daily until they hecsune thread-bate, no more last minute hunting for the day’s tie, as Latin caught up with the lib sm of da tanes. we entelBtClifcs VI, the Women’s Liberation Movement was hardly known to anyone, much less to a group of seventh graders. LiJ wever, Womens’ Lib grew rapidly in numbers and Qjter nd turned its attention to fighting difcrimination against women. One of their targets was the all-male Lsttn, School. Triumph BOSTON UNIVERSITY HOME GUESTS DOWN TOGO BALLON Cross Country t The Latin School Cross Country program begins unofficially in August. Runners work out on their own. By the time training begins officially, % ' eterans should be able to jog at least ten miles. Long distance running tests one’s mental agility and indeed personal- ity. The sport is lonely; to fill the time, the mind goes off on a tangent. This mood is not meditation, but eclectic, patterned thought. After each workout the question of whether running is worthwhile or not can only be answered affirmatively by noting 6ne’s improvement in time and increase in distance over the last outing. This year’s Latin squad, which had promise of being among the best |? in the sch x)l’s history, lost varsity runners Fred Carey, Tom Madden, ■ Dave Higgins, and Co-Captains Bob Williams and Chris Moylan to |i( injuries. Coach Coleman attributed this year’s success to the leadership displayed by five seniors: Mike Connerty (Co. Capt.), Jack Doyle (Co. Capt.), Pat Daly, Bill Shields, and Steve Mahoney. The team finished the season with an 11-5-3 record gaining two All Star berths in the Boston Conference for Mike Connerty (goal) and Junior defenseman Jack O’Callahan. 1 1 1 J.V. and Freshman Hockey FIRST ROW: Mr. Pollock (coach), DeVellis, Simpson, Slade, Hanlon, Sorrentino, Brolin, McIntosh, J. The Boston Latin School _JV Hockey Team enjoyed its most successful season since its revival five years ago, pxrsting a 10-6-2 record against many strong and out- standing public and private school hockey teams in the Greater Boston area. This JV Hockey Team, coached by Mr. Pollock, was sparked by the play-making of Tom Maciejko and the tight checking of John Ollen, co-captains. The highlights of the season were the 4-3 upset over Catholic Memorial and the 5- 2 victory over undefeated Malden Catholic. The Latin ,JV’s also faced strong competition against such teams as Thayer Acad- emy, Arlington, Belmont Hill, and B. C. High. The JV hockey program shows great promise for the future and shall prove its worth by supplying talented players for the varsity. 112 Soccer Team I An inexpjcrienced B.L.S. Soccer team ended a disappointing season with a record of 0-12. The team showed improvement over the last half of the season and came close to a few victories. Major setbacks came when Captain Steve Price fractured his hand before the second game and was out for the season; also three other staners were lost due to transfer to other schools and work after school. On the positive side, outstanding var- sity men were Eiennis Brady, John Lowe, and John Gray who claimed five out of the six goals scored during the season. In addition many new boys received soccer experience. Coach Evans is looking for- ward to the return of fifteen lettermen for next year to help in future competition. 113 Track FIRST ROW: Cunningham, Reed, Harvey, Buckley, Felder (CoCapt ), Williams (Co-Capt ), Quarles, Young, Davenport, SEC- OND ROW: Bradley, Geyer, McCarthy, Williams, McFarland, Acerra, Mulkern, Hart, Cavas, Feugel, Foley, Coach Irons. Bob Williams third in the 1000, George Munro second in the 600, and Chris Bradley second in the 300. In the sprints, Clayton Felder and Paul Quarles blew away with a sixth and a fourth. In the Mass. State Coaches’ Invitational, Marini, Getchell, Foley, and Munro finished fourth in the 600 relay. City teams rarely do well in such meets, for the distance runners have no decent prac- tice facilities but the season was more than satisfying. The runners mentioned above received the able backing of a number of promising underclassmen. Latin suffered its only loss of the regular season to Rindge Tech. In the Regimentals Latin finished sec- ond to English. The squad entered Spring Track with determination and a confidence for another good season. 115 Golf Team Swings for Championship Latin’s Golf Team after finishing second place in the Mass. Although graduation has dealt a crippling blow to the Latin whackers, the new players are expected to pick up the slack, led by returning lettermen DiCarlo, Visser, and Trocki. The BLS Computer Center continued its expansion trend with the acquisition of the IBM 514 Mark Sense Reproducer and the 029 Interpret Punch. OFFICERS Pres. — S. Paris V. P. — S. Bayers Sec.
