Powers Praeceptores Studentes Primani Res Athleticae Ordinationes Scholasticae IN MEMORIAM The Boston Latin School community was deeply saddened at the end of May, 1972, to learn of the untimely death of Mr. Wil- liam Devore, Assistant Headmaster. Noted for his industry and perseverance, he contin- uously displayed a concern for the school far exceeding the ordinary call of duty. His calmness under stress and his sedulous approach to problem-solving served the school well during a very trying transitional C eriod. A former Latin School boy, he may e well remembered for his remarkable sense of attention to detail, especially in pro- gramming courses and scheduling events. Most students will recall his easy accessibil- ity and his willingness to hear varied view- f joints on conflicting issues. Latin School has ost not only a superb administrator but also a dear friend. AD MULTOS ANNOS Last October we were dismayed to find that Mr. Herbert Zoll had reluctantly requested early retirement for reasons of health. From nis earliest days as a Latin School boy, and later as a Harvard man, throughout his long-time service on the fac- ulty, he exhibited constantly a strong regard for the high scholarship ideals that have characterized the Boston Latin School. Soft- spoken in expression and sensitive to the beauty and truth in good writing, he was indeed a gentle man. To Mr. ZolT we offer thanks and extend our best wishes for a happy retirement. 5 THIS IS BOSTON LATIN 6 Times Are Changing . . . 8 . . But In Our Minds Tradition Lingers 9 10 . . For the past six years (or seven) they have taught us not only the three R’s, but also an appreciation of knowledge. We shall never forget the lessons which they have- tried so hard to in- still in us and we thank them sincerely. Wilfred L. O’Leary, ’25 Headmaster Aequam Memento Rebus . . . 16 ... In Arduis Servare Mentem HEADMASTER’S MESSAGE Nicholas Murray Butler, late President of Columbia University, once said that “Education truly conceived is spiritual growth toward intellectual and moral perfection, and is not an artificial process to be carried on according to mechanical formulas to a purely material end.” There are utilities higher and utilities lower, and if a school in its zeal to fit the youth for self-support were to neglect to lay the foundation for that higher intellectual and spiritual life which consti- tutes humanity’s full stature, it would sacrifice the higher utilities to the lower. Fortunately the Class of 1973, along with the legions of past graduates, has received a training in the Humanities based on “spiritual growth toward intellectual and moral perfection.” Because of this education, you are fortified with knowledge and the know-why which will enable you to live the good life. Like the Latin School men of the past, you will be able to stand up and be counted upon to do your duty no matter what the cost. Let the cause be just, you will be its defender, thereby inspiring those of lesser moral fiber. You will be leaders in our society of tomorrow, never forgetting the example of host of leaders whose names adorned our hallowed hall. The latter excelled in many fields of endeavor but they all had one thing in common — a resolute determination to do their duty and excel in the area of talents with which their Creator so generously endowed them. Plato tells us, “For a man to conquer himself is the first and best of all victories.” The long hard road through the Latin School which you have traversed proves the Philosopher’s statement. You have done this by acquiring SELF-DIS- CIPLINE, the sine-qua-non for success in life. You have the Humanities to thank for that priceless virtue. Be never unmindful of the debt you owe your Masters, parents, and the good people of the City of Boston who made it possible for you to enjoy the privilege of attending this venerable institution. Be loyal to B.L.S., aid her in every way, make her cause your cause. Make it a goal to help future Latin School boys to achieve a college education by being a generous donor to the Scholarship Funds. Changes were brought about that shaped the old world as we knew it then into the new world as we live it today. During the same time period Latin School went through an era of change. Innovations like Flexible Cam- pus, the dropping of the dress code, and coeducation — all inconceivable six short years ago — have become real- ities. Most importantly, student involvement helped bring about these changes. As we, the Class of 1973, now leave Latin School for the final time as students, we can ask ourselves: “Will we ever stop changing?” Time alone will produce the answer and with it the verdict of how well we initiated and accommodated the changes of tomorrow. In the years that lie ahead we would hope that issues like Vietnam, crime, pollution — all of which have pro- foundly changed our lives — will not have us into a hope- Paul Mahoney, Treasurer less state of apathy. We should continue to be involved, to question, to seek solutions, so that, ultimately, we can shape the courses of our own lives. To each member of the class, I extend my congratula- tions and very best wishes for a healthy and happy life. I earnestly hope that each one of us will achieve his goal and help make this world a better place — for all of us. 0 7lch ' ' i 40 Alan McHale Edward Ciampa, Chairman Douglas Antoniazzi Hans Birle Gary Giarle Nathaniel Borum William King Jonathan Kotlier Robert Minihan 41 uon Chronicle Years Of Tradition . . . Class VI September 7, 1967, began a new era of our lives; students from all over Boston were drawn from their sheltered neighborhoods and integrated. We entered the assembly hall with mixed feelings of curiosity, excitement, and fear. We expected new freedoms, sharply contrasting with the strict limitations placed on us by our grammar schools; were we ever quick to learn. Perhaps one of us was unfor- tunate enough to buy a key to the elevator, or a ticket to the fourth floor swimming pool (good only on rainy days). Or maybe there were a few lucky ones, big for their age, who escaped the hailing of “s-s-sixie” and intimidation from the “upper classmen.” Yes, we were branded with that unforgiveable crime of being a sixie! However, we felt proud to be a part of it all: sportcoat and tie the order of the day (Lord forbid if you forgot either!), white socks and sneakers, the traditional dress of the sixie, possibly accompa- nied by a briefcase which, when fully loaded, outweighed its bearer. Outside of the hallowed halls of BLS important events, happen- ings that would be with us for the rest of our lives in memory, were occurring. Perhaps it was the first time we skipped school to watch the Red Sox forge ahead to capture the American League pennant, and then lose the World Series, or maybe it was the sur- prise of the first successful heart transplant, possibly soon to become an every day affair. Perhaps it was the shock of the assassi- nation of Robert Kennedy, the second to vex that family, or that of history’s most dedicated civil rights leader, Martin Luther King. All of these incidents did, or someday would, affect each one of us. Toward the closing of our memorable first year at the Latin School, the ranks and files seemed to have diminished drastically, a phenomenon which would plague us throughout our BLS history, with some leaving to find safer institutions, and others enjoying Class VI so much, remaining to do it all over again. The rest of us, maybe by just a few points, were to move onward, to become in a few years “Upper Classmen.” . And Change Class V Ah, the tables were reversed. It was our turn to make life miser- able for the incoming sixies. How much we had learned in one year, or so we thought! There would still be those wondering if Doc and Willie weren’t characters from Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes, and those waiting for a suitable day to use their swimming pool pass. Things were happening in and around Latin School. A mustache mysteriously appeared on Dr. O’Leary’s portrait in the Assembly Hall. It was a time of growing racial tension, Avenue Louis Pasteur becoming a racial battleground; our only knowledge of the subject was that we received a half day of school, escorted to the trolleys by the police. The incident precipitated the formation of the Afro- American Society, a welcome addition to the broad amalgam of egocentric clubs and jejune activities already in existence. Some desirable personnel entered the teaching ranks, among them the late Mr. William Devore, and several more female teach- ers, curiosities in an all male school. They were to discover the con- sequences of working in such an institution; some made it while others moved on. The world, built around our Latin School existence, was involved in conflicting events. Perhaps some of us still remember the absurd argument over the shape of the Paris Peace Table, while many were being slaughtered in the Viet Nam War, or perhaps others remember Apollo 8, the first manned spacecraft to achieve a lunar orbit, later to result in the lunar landing, a concept once found only in science fiction. Of more significance to us was the Supreme Court decision, resulting in the dropping of the time honored tradi- tion of sportcoat and tie, a milestone in our lives and that of the Boston Latin School. Leaving the eighth grade for most is the beginning of high school; for us, it was the relief of reinforcing the Darwinist laws of “Survival of the fittest.” We were on our way. How much so we rea,lly did not discover until later. ARG© lir in on English Of Hope . . Class IV After a summer filled with Viet Nam, Woodstock, and Apollo Elev- en’s historic voyage to the moon, Latin School’s hallowed halls were once again filled. Our dwindling class was reinforced by the IV-B’s, who would not gain full acceptance until senior year. Our battle against the odds resumed this year with new vigor, the curriculum expanded by the addition of a modern language, biology, and civics. The first of the time-honored traditions fell at the hands of the Supreme Court; jackets and ties were replaced by “T” shirts and jeans, in some cases a welcome change to the droopy sportcoat, tat- tered with age, reeking of gym smells and rotten fruit. The fall of ’69 began a war against the war in Viet Nam. Massa- chusetts, most loyal to the peace movement, greeted 100,000 on the Boston Common; BLS showed its concern by allowing students to attend the moratorium rallies with impunity. Another movement was gaining new strength, a movement which seemed far removed from the traditionally all male Latin School — Women’s Lib. Before we left Latin, we were to feel its power. Teachers were feeling the pinch of the purse that spring, and con- cern over the conditions in the Boston Schools, precipitated a strike at a time of the year when passion for studies is traditionally at an annual low point. Thus, in the spring of ’70 we left behind another year at BLS, a little wiser, in a narrow sense with the sophisticated knowledge of how to defeat the invincible Caesar, and in a broader sense with the uneasy awareness that world affairs would some day affect us in ways as yet undetermined. 44 . . And Achievement Class III The beginning of our Sophomore year was in some respects similar to that of the previous year. There were still die-hard English teach- ers who demanded that book reports be taken from the Summer Reading list. Declamation, math, and Latin were still very much a part of the picture. Yet, different concepts had developed within the system. No longer was the phrase “as one student goes, so goes the homeroom” true. During the previous year we had elected either world history, chemistry, or Greek and as a result, each of us had different schedules. Homeroom periods were done away with and the seven period day became a reality. Utility periods were put into effect on Mondays and Fridays. It was an unbelievable year for athletics. The football team beat English and finished an undefeated season. The track and crew teams likewise went unbeaten, giving Latin its best overall athletic season in years. Happenings outside the BLS Walls had their effects on us all. Mass pollution, Northern Ireland, and Biafra made us wonder about the legacy which our generation would soon inherit. Archie Bunker and J.C. Superstar made their appearance on the scene, and in sports, the Stanley Cup came back home for the year. Student unrest culminated in February, 1971, in a city-wide student strike. The Student Council went into lengthy debate which ended in a deadlock. Not until students from English High broke into the main lobby of the building did the students of BLS decide where they would stand. Threats made by the strikers to return with a larger group to “free” BLS threw the school into a state of tension and anx- iety for the remainder of the day. The Student Council itself broke tradition when it called for open election of its officers in April. The end of the school year was greeted with mixed emotions: joy for the graduating class and sadness at the retirement of Miss Taylor. As school nurse she selflessly battled ripped pants, senioritis, and tes- tophobia, as well as legitimate illness. Her presence has since been sorely missed. The transition between our sophomore and junior years found some of us trekking through Germany with Herr Hartel. In June everyone looked forward to the challenges of the most difficult year to come. 45 Preparing Ourselves . . Class II Class II, “the year that really counts,” began amid much confusion, many of the underclassmen assaulted on the way to school because of conflicting schedules with our rival. The problems vanished with new schedules for both schools. As things began to quiet down, we began to wonder what our first battle with Princeton — the PSAT, only a smattering of what we would have to endure in April and May, and again in our senior year, would be like. We found out too soon. For some, results brought pleasure, while others tried to figure out who made the atrocious blunder down in New Jersey. In November, many of us put our faith and work into our favorite- son candidate for City Council — Larry DiCara, which support ulti- mately led to his election. Then came the Thanksgiving Day rivalry, football, or should we say swimming meet. It was a contest of who could endure the rain and stay on his feet long enough; result: a Latin victory on the final play of the game. The crowd that year was small but enthusiastic. Ours was one of the few games not postponed. The new year brought on many important responsibilities. Open Campus, now fully underway, a supposed cure for that devastating disease “Senioritis,” found us sole rulers of the Boston Latin School. We received our rings, hopeful that the date of graduation might remain unchanged. Activities once again found a confused Junior class, with SAT’s and Achievements, the sponsoring of a not too suc- cessful Junior Prom and the election of officers. The bustle ceased for a while so that the school could mourn over the death of our beloved Assistant Headmaster, Mr. William Devore. One of our first acts as upper classmen would be to institute a scholarship fund in his mem- ory. Our years at Latin School were ending. Next year would be our year; we were prepared to make it our test. . . For Future Years Class I Upon returning from vacation, we eagerly anticipated the start of a “difficult” year; between a scheduling mixup and the arrival of coeducational BLS, we weren’t disappointed! By no means were we still on vacation when school began; as a matter of fact, our workload had gotten noticeably heavier. Even when there seemed to be a break in the normal routine, there were always two or three different meetings — conveniently scheduled at the same time — that we wanted to attend. But whatever the situa- tion, the opportunity and need to become involved was gradually opening for us. What with a second chance at the College Boards, the presidential symposium, a crushing victory over English High on Thanksgiving Day, and meeting application deadlines on time, the fall of our senior year passed quickly by. Then the long waiting period began. The new year was the best of times and the worst of times for the class of ’73. For some it meant Flexible Campus; for others it was sheer boredom. For some it meant acceptance from the school of their choice; for others it was rejection. Somehow, strangely enough, this was the time when we developed meaningful relationships with our classmates. We all seemed to appreciate each other more than at any other time in our high school careers. Perhaps our friends were the real reason why some of us made it through. Relief from the Viet Nam war came, a blessing for many of us who might have been destined for the draft. It was a time to consider problems at home, and there were many: inflation, pollution, crime, Watergate, and local corruption. The basketball team came through, making the State Tourney, sup- ported well by fellow classmates. Though some old traditions were dissolved, some still remained; in May we held Class Day and our Senior Prom. Now, our last acts as Seniors were complete; only graduation remained. Finally, on June 11, 1973, each of us was able to say, “I’ve made it.” Six years, six long years, so we thought, but really they passed so quickly. They were years of change and development, of joy and sad- ness, of hope and excitement. We were now cast upon the world to make our mark. To those who helped transform a dream in Class VI into a reality in Class I, we pay sincere tribute. Res Athleticae City Title Returns Gallagher’s gorillas With a 6-3 record the Wolf pack seemed to have the same type of season as that of a year ago, but this year the City Championship belonged to Boston Latin. Hopes were dim after a demoralizing loss to Medford. Although it defeated Weymouth South and Tech, the team was not impressive. A 14-0 loss to Brookline, in a game closer than that indicated by score, seemed to bring the pack to life. After strong wins over New Bedford and Durfee, Latin faced a powerful ' Newton team. The winner of this game would have an excellent chance of appearing in the Schoolboy Superbowl. With a 21-6 lead at halftime, Newton was confident heading into the locker room. Latin returned, fired up, in the second half and came within a touchdown of winning. Newton won, but the clock defeated Latin. Although the Wolfpack was disappointed, they wanted victory over undefeated B.C. High more than anything else. Latin was definitely peaking as a team. The Eaglets were stunned as Latin built up a 14-13 halftime lead. Neither team would give up as the score was tied at one point 20-20, but Latin prevailed and headed to the showers with a 26-20 victory. The Pack was now ready to face English in the Thanksgiving Day finale. 1st ROW: Strecker, P. McFarland, Atkinson; Murphy, Catano, Mazares, Lynch, Silver Kerr, Burnham, (capt.) The Coach and After pulling out wins the past two years with last minute heroics, Coach Costello and the team decided that this was the year that Latin would roll over English. From the start- ers at the opening kickoff to the second and third stringers at the final gun, the aggressive Latin Squad overwhelmed English. Fullback Bill Burnham, who missed the first three games because of an operation, came back and capped his season with a stunning show earning him the Latin-English M.V.P. award. Burnham’s comeback inspired every man on the team and imbued it with the winning spirit. He along with co-captain John Gallagher and regulars Bill King, Paul Chisholm, John Connors, Greg Mazares, John Lynch, Rich Strecker, Lou Catano and Andy Puopolo, all of whom were All-City selections, helped to bring the City Championship back to Boston Latin. With this win the Class of 1973 became the first class to graduate undefeated in the Latin-English series. The team would like to thank head coach Paul Costello and his staff, Coaches Cohen, Ford and Moran and Trainer Dan Lyons, the student body and the Cheerleaders, for their time and support. Casey intimidates Southie Giarle soars over English The 1972-73 Wolfpack basketball team enjoyed the most successful season of any B.L.S. hoop team in the last decade, as it made its way into the State Tournament. This year’s team was different than most because of the depth in all positions. Coach Costello enjoyed the opportunity to substitute without hurting the power of the team. Led by co-cap- tains Tim Casey and Pat Sweeney the B.L.S. hoopsters went 12-6 with only one loss outside the city. The powerful offensive attack was set up by a tenacious man-to-man defense. Coach Costello proved that hustle and hard work can make a team successful. Great contributions were made by centers Dan Keel and Dan McCarthy who did great jobs controlling rebounds against the big boys throughout the state. Forwards Pat Sweeney, Dan Fitzgerald and Bill King helped out on the boards and in scoring. The offense came mostly from guards Tim Casey, Gary Giarle, Andy Puopolo and Steve King. The whole team would like to thank Coach Costello and Coach Cohen for their hard work and devotion. FIRST ROW: David, Roche, O’Sullivan SECOND ROW: McDonough, G. Murphy, Kingsley, Greene, P. Norton starts This year Boston Latin’s hockey squad had the potential to finish second if not first. Although Latin had impressive power on paper the team lacked the cohesiveness that makes a team work well as a unit. Latin’s starting six were Captain Rob Connerty, Jim Norton and John Gallagher up front, with Jack O’Callahan, Mark Moriello and Dan Murphy alternating on defense and goalie Dan Magnarelli in the nets. The second line consisted of little Jack Kelly with Bill Shields and Jack Doyle. Also contributing were back-up goalie Mike Connerty, Connie Bletzer, Pat Donovan, Pat Daley, and Kenny Connolly. Coach Coleman tried hard to bring some life into the squad by juggling lines and calling hard practices but nothing helped. Boston Latin just did not have a good year. Boston Latin has had great golf teams over the years and this year we expect it to be no different. Senior swingers Kerr, Kel- ley, Doyle, Murphy, and Jameson have all had three or more years of experience which will be of great importance. Other members include seniors Coulter and Vaughn and jun- iors Trockie, DiCarlo and Nigrosh who are all expected to play well. Last year the squad was city champs, but did poorly in the state tournament. This year we expect to win it all for the school and Coach Johnson, not to mention ourselves. Led by captains Bill Neelon and Joe Celeste the B.L.S. Frosh and J.V. hockey teams played an independent schedule comprising 25 games against many of the outstanding public and private school hockey teams in the Boston area. The Frosh posted a 2-5-4 record against such teams as Arlington, B.C. High, South Boston, Milton Academy, Belmont Hill, and Noble and Greenough. The J.V.’s faced very strong competition against teams such as Arlington, Andover Academy, Archbishop Williams, Malden Catho- lic and Belmont Hill. Both teams were coached by Mr. Pollock who feels that this is the best way to prepare young players for the B.L.S. varsity. These two teams will be admitted to a league in the near future if present plans work out. Undefeated City Champs . . . Spry and Costello leap from the blocks. This year’s Swimming Team was the best in the history of the Boston Latin School. It compiled a record of 15 victo- ries and 0 defeats. In post-season competition it won the City of Boston and the Greater Boston Interscholastic Leagues’ championships. New School records were established by Catp. Scott McNab in the backstroke, N. Costello in the 100, 200 and 40 0 yard freestyle, R. Spry in the 50 and 60 yard freestyle, and in the butterfly, S. Santangelo in the diving event, in the medley relay consisting of MacNab, Butler, C. Connors, and Spry, and in the freestyle relay team of T. Flaherty, J. Suissa, M. Raffauf, and Costello. In the New England Interscholastic Championships Spry placed second in the 50 yard freestyle and Costello was third in the 100 yard freestyle. LETTERMEN CLASS I Capt. S. MacNab CLASS II R. Ahearn N. The undefeated varsity boat consisted of captains Jon Kotlier, Tom McMillian and John Crimmins along with seniors Rich Horan, Ed Sullivan and Juniors Ron Zeghibe, Sean Tehan and Bill Hebard and also senior coxswain Gerry Carmody steering our boat through the murky waters of the Charles River. The long hours of strenuous rowing up and down the river paid off in well-deserved victories over the tough competition of Tech, English, and Trade. All five races were close until the finish where the superior condition- ing and the extra practice of the Latin crew paid off in powerful sprints to victory. Latin’s crew exemplified the teamwork and dedication necessary for a winning team. Victory — of course 114 The Victory Team Undefeated Listen you guys — no fishing 115 Soccer Team . However the dedica- tion fo the team and the coaching of Mr. Evans enabled the soccer team to enjoy one of its finest years ever. Their 6-4-1 record gave them third place in a strong Bos- ton City League. The scoring punch was provided by the forward line of Kowalewicz, Clark, Suchecki, Fantasia, and Birle. The halfbacks Kelley, Brennan and Lowe acted both as playmakers and as defensemen. The fullbacks were Reagan, Yong, and Bluthardt, whose hardnosed defense along with the goal-tending of Steve Price helped the team post four shutouts. Brady, Fishbone, Conroy, and Grey provided the needed help from the bench. This year’s harriers, determined to avenge the Regimental loss of last year, trained hard throughout the early weeks of the season in preparation for the Reg- gie championship, which everyone knew belonged to Latin. A much improved team led by seniors Mike Caruso, Bob O’Leary and Don Simi easily defeated English, Hyde Park, Technical, Don Bosco, Roslindale and Jamaica Plain. Even in defeat Latin was impressive, giv- ing B.C. High and C.M. rough competi- tion. The consistent performances of the underclassmen provided the team with the strength and depth needed to capture the City and Regimental titles. Juniors Bob Williams, Burt Wicks, Neil Foley, Mark Getchell, and Chris Moylan along with sophomores Steve Cunningham and Curly Peterson completed the varsity squad. Special recognition should be given to Bob Williams, a sensational runner, who, no doubt, will lead the team to another title next year. The team would also like to thank Coach Fred Irons for his dedica- tion and inspiration during the season. And A Reggie Championship Indoor Track RECORD This year’s team had all the ingredients of a champion- ship squad: strength, depth, and consistency. Strength came from such outstanding performers as Nate Borum in the hurdles and high jump, Don Simi in the 600, and Bob Wil- liams in the 1000. Depth was provided by the remarkable sophomore contingent of Cunningham, Carey, McCarthy, Munro, and Quarles; the steady performances of Bob O’Leary, Neil Foley, Chris Moylan, and Mark Getchell in the distance events; Bill Burnham, Clayton Felder, Chris Brad- ley, Paul Thomas, and Tom Young in the dashes; and Greg Mazares, Jim Hegarty and Chuck Donigian in the shotput, giving the team the consistency needed to build up an early lead which opposing teams throughout the year found hard to overcome. Guiding the team to the Regimental and City championship was coach Fred Irons who, next year, with the loss of only a few seniors, should have another excellent team. Our secret weapon was the second floor corridor which we pounded day after day unbeknown to our oppo- nents. We present for all the school to see: The 1973 Liber Actorum!! You are now feasting your eyes upon Boston Latin School’s newest and most unorganized tes- tament (til next year). Surfacing from the deep, dark, depths of the yearbook room comes the masterpiece of all times. There is no known reason why this is so for, if a person were to stand outside Room 032, he would soon over- hear Paul Lawton’s voice screaming, “Where the heck is my camera, you dummies?”; or Roy Strac mum- bling, “I ain’t printing those pictures.” If you listened a bit harder you might hear Dicky Myers saying, “Lawton, you disappointed me again,” or Paul Mahoney saying “Let’s put the sports section on page 1.” Listen a bit closer and you will perceive the voice of Dave Gordon saying “Seriously though;” or Pete McFarland saying, “Somebody help me.” He needed the help. But as you can see, we pulled through with a heck of a work of art. The staff would like to thank Mr. Hannigan and Mr. Powers for their support and guidance, with special thanks to the editors. The Liber Actorum also wishes to thank the Little Man who was never there. You may now continue to devour this book. It drove Pete McFarland to drinking. Decisions, decisions . . .
