Albert J. Van Steenbergen Belgian born and educated, Mr. Albert J. Van Steenbergen came to the United States just after serving in the Belgian army in W.W. I. Appointed to B.L.S. as a “temporary” teacher in 1929, “Mr. Van” stayed on until June, 1971, serving first as German and French master, a department head and finally, as assistant headmaster. Not only did he aid Latin School boys in their intellectual developement, but won nationwide acclaim as a great teacher and scholar when in 1954-55, he served on the original commitee to set up the Advanced Placement program. Mr. Van Steenberger brought more to the Lat- in School than just pure knowledge. His bi-cul- tural background, Belgian and So. Boston-Rox- bury, served to enhance the development of the men of Latin School. Since his untimely retire- ment due to illness at the end of last year, he has been sorely missed, and always will be missed by those who knew him intimately, casually and also by those who only know him by reputation. It is with much, much pride that we, the class of 1972 dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Albert J. Van Steenbergen. 4 Aaron Gordon Aaron Gordon began teaching history at the Boston Latin School in the fall of 1929. He has been an integral part of the Boston Latin School Faculty for the past 43 years. During these years, he coached track and tennis, produced op- perettas and was faculty advisor to the Register and Yearbook for over twenty years. The many friendships that were made during these years have been a source of ongoing joy for him . He was a “Latin School boy” himself and has always remained one in his feelings for the school and its students. We, the senior class, wish to extend to him our thanks for these many years and wish him many years of health and happiness. 5 m SPIRIT . . . THAT IS THE LATIN SCHOOL UNFORGETABLE PLACES . . Butters Assistant Headmaster William Devore Assistant Headmaster Mrs. Curadossi Mrs. McCarthy Mrs. Gibbons Se cretaries IN ARDUIS SERVARE MENTEM HEADMASTER’S MESSAGE Nicholas Murray Butler, late President of Columbia University, once said that “Education truly conceived is spiritual growth toward intellectual and moral perfection, and is not an artificial process to be car- ried on according to mechanical formulas to a purely material end.” There are utilities higher and utilities lower, and if a school in its zeal to fit the youth for self- support were to neglect to lay the foundation for that higher intellectual and spiritual life which constitutes humanity’s full stature, it would sacrifice the higher utilities to the lower. Fortunately the Class of 1972, along with the le- gions of past graduates, has received a training in the Humanities based on “spiritual growth toward intel- lectual and moral perfection.” Because of this educa- tion, you are fortified with knowledge and the know- why which will enable you to live the good life. Like the Latin School men of the past, you will be able to stand up and be counted upon to do your duty no matter what the cost. Let the cause be just, you will be its de- fender, thereby inspiring those of lesser moral fiber. You will be leaders in our society of tomorrow, never forgetting the example of hosts of leaders whose names adorned our hallowed hall. The latter excelled in many fields of endeavor but they all had one thing in common — a resolute determination to do their duty and excel in the area of talents with which their Creator so generously endowed them. Plato tells us, “For a man to conquer himself is the first and best of all victories.” The long hard road through the Latin School which you have traversed proves the Philosopher’s statement. You have done this by acquiring SELF-DISCIPLINE, the sine-qua-non for success in life. You have the Humanities to thank for that priceless virtue. Be never unmindful of the debt you owe your Mas- ters, parents, and the good people of the City of Bos- ton who made it possible for you to enjoy the privilege of attending this venerable institution. Be loyal to B.L.S., aid her in every way, make her cause your cause. Make it a goal to help future Latin School boys to achieve a college education by being a generous donor to the Scholarship Funds. Our long expe- rience at the School will influence us throughout our lives. We will draw upon the resources which a Latin School education has given us time and time again — an education which has taught us not only how to utilize the facts absorbed from countless textbooks, but also an education which has taught us how to deal with the problems and short-comings of our complicated society. To consider ourselves truly intelligent, though, would be a grave mistake, for we still have much to learn about ourselves and the world around us — a world of new nations and nuclear weapons, of afflu- ence and starvation, of war and peace. Upon leaving Latin School, we carry with us mem- ories, both pleasant and unpleasant, of people and events; we leave behind us accomplishments, both monumental and miniscule, in every aspect of our school life. We must now begin to accept the greater responsi- bilities and challenges that are waiting beyond the security of high school, with its friendly cliques and protecting walls. We must now become involved in the real work- ings of society: in govenment, business, science, education — all the professions, always ready to sac- rifice our personal ambitions and desires for the more practical interests of all. This sacrifice will call for a great deal of maturity, unselfishness, and dedi- cation. I hope that the Latin School has. at least in part, instilled these valuable traits within each of you. Let us all remain faithful to our Alma Mater, always prepared to come to her assistance in times of need. Finally, we must boldly seek out reality — a search which at first will be very painful, but in the end be very rewarding. For without recognizing what our greatest problems are, how can we hope to solve them?, how can we hope to improve society? We must not allow ourselves to become disillusioned with the conditions of the world, for there are no textbook solutions, no easy answers to our prob- lems. Instead we must continue to hope, and contin- ue to work towards building a better world, ignoring hatred, prejudice, and narrow-mindedness in favor of humane concerns and sincere regards for others. Only in this way can we find the key to a life of peace and harmony for all men . To the members of the class of ' 72, I offer my deepest congratulations and a sincere hope for every happiness and success in the future. Kevin A. McCluskey 38 John G. Albert Michael R. Hanna Bernard C. Kohler Paul G. Paget 39 James E. Pearson Edmund P. Tutlys Frederick J. Carey Mark E. Cuddy CHAIRMAN Matthew P. Basile THE CLASS OF 1972 It is impossible to use generalities in describing the members of the Class of 1972. A great variety of back- rounds. personalities, and personal goals exists in these Latin School men, as they have in every other group of seniors. The Class of ' 72 has strengthened the concept of increased freedom, coupled with responsibility, in education, with the stress often-times shifting to per- sonal-interest development, in order to prepare them- selves capably for the difficult task of surviving in a highly specialized society. They have compiled a record of consistent achieve- ment and have shared both successes and setbacks throughout their careers at the school — careers characterized by hard work towards a common goal. A great number of positive accomplishments in aca- demics, athletics, and student government, to name a few, far exceeds the small number of failures; this pos- itive attitude is the key to a rewarding experience at the Latin School, just as it is the key to a rewarding experience in life. A much harsher education, one in life itself, will continue beyond the red-brick bastion of education on the Avenue, but the Class of ’72 will be prepared, for they have already tasted life in all its sweetness and bitterness. Within the microcosm of society known as the Latin School, they have encountered not only joy and happiness through their many friendships, but also fear and prejudice in their meetings with many different types of people. They have achieved a great goal by their graduation from what is now their Alma Mater, Boston Latin School, and will hopefully repay their parents, teach- ers, and advisors by using their unique talents to fur- ther the causes of peace and concern for mankind throughout the world. J more than a game A football season is a lot like life in microcosm. The season begins with warm, sunny days filled with opti- mism and hope. As the season progresses, the sun- shine wanes, the warmth diminishes, and optimistic hope is qualified by the hard lifelike realities of fierce human effort. The days grow colder, the rains come, and the vision becomes more realistic. It is always eas- ier to declare the top position in anything than to reach it. While hope perdures, ultimate victory is again a fickle lady, ever to be wooed with all one’s might but never to be securely or forever won. Each week is a new encounter, each season is a new challenge. Life is like that too, because it is spent in time amid all the vicissitudes of personal trials and existential difficul- ties. Anyone who thinks otherwise lives in a dream world. But a football season is authentic and real, as well as somewhat fantastic. : IRST ROW: Coach Costello, Albert, Latyszonek, Paget. Football is a sport of tremendous dedication which develops strength, speed, and agility. The foot- ball athlete must train hard to perfect these essential skills. Thus, merely obtaining a starting slot is ex- tremely difficult while becoming an extraordinary player is beyond the range of most candidates. The Wolfpack finished with a record of six wins and three losses. Most people would consider this a respectable record, but for Latin School Men it was not enough. For the ultimate in football is victory and anything short of that is a disappointment. 1972 was a fine season for the team, but a great season for standouts Gene Survillo and Fran Cronin. It was also a gratifying experience for hard working starters Gene Nazzaro, Dan FitzGerald, Marty Lydon, Pat Flaherty, Paul Paget, Jim Byrne, Mike Moroney, Brian Mulrooney, Paul DeFrancesco, Bill Moran, and Mike Gervino. All were proud to be able to represent BLS on the gridiron. They were also grateful for the opportunity to play under Coach Costello and his staff . Fortunately for the ri- vals, the game was to be played on the Astro-turf of B.U. ' s Nickerson Field. Most of the other games throughout the state had been cancelled, however the Grandaddy of them all went on as scheduled. The 1500 hardy souls who braved the steady, whipping rain, dragging their way to the exits as the final seconds ticked off. were content to have wit- nessed a hard-fought stalemate. But Latin had other ideas. Gaining possession of the ball with eight seconds remaining, King sprinted to his right at the English 23 and lofted a strike over the fingertips of two defenders to Steve Mahoney, who was angling right as he crossed the goal line. Ecstacy reigned on the Latin bench and moments later in the Latin dressing room. It was a dramatic climax to a good, solid season — a game to be re- membered forever. McCluskey, Wallace, Casey, Regan, Moroney, Mgrs. Moymhan. T. Fitzgerald, MacFarland. Reagan. HOOP The 1972 basketball squad was unlike any the school has seen in a number of years. Led by consist- ent co-captains Kevin McCluskey and Ray “Dar” Simons, the team ran, shot, and hustled it’s way to a position of contention and respect in the City League. Steady ballhandler Bill King, along with first- year men Joe Regan and Mike Moroney, gave the purple a formidable starting five, with every player capable of scoring, rebounding and playing tough defense. Rick Wallace and his “Warriors”, Fran Cron- in, John Barry, junior Steve O’Hara, and “Easy” Ed Tutlys provided Latin with a durable (and entertain- ing) bench. Although five of the first seven players have gradu- ated, the team will remain strong with junior spark- plug Tim Casey, starter Bill King and aggressive Andy Puopolo returning as experienced guards; hustling Pat Sweeney and Dan Fitzgerald will take up where Regan, McCluskey, Moroney and Cronin left off un- der the boards. Coach Costello, who was given a long and difficult schedule, expressed great confidence in his person- nel and stressed defense and team play throughout the season. A strong JV team, coached by Steve Coh- en and Tom McCarthy, lends bright hope to the future. Radar” on target. - i 1 i i i This year ' s season started on a sour note for the squad when the services of senior wing John Hama no were lost due to injury. However the squad pulled together and Coach Coleman and company enjoyed one of the best seasons in a long time for a Latin School hockey team as they fought for the right to partici- pate in post season competition. The main reason for the fine season was not only an abundance of talent but also a new spirit of togetherness, vital for any team that wants to win. The team was young with only four seniors who had the experience needed in the tight spots. Lost through graduation were leading scorer, Tom Cohan; wing, Paul Golden; defense man, Tom Driscoll; and goalie, Capt. Brian Pudgie” Powers. Junior Roger Toland who was away on a two month tour of duty, bolstered the squad with his return. Backup goalies Mike Connerty and Dan Magnarelli worked hard all season long. Coach Coleman will have much tal- ent rturning, however namely, the Junior line of Robbie Conner- ty, Jim Norton, and John Gallagher; the starting defensive pair of Sophomore Mark Moriello and Freshman Jackie O ' Callahan; and Juniors Bill Shields, and Dan Murphy, another fine defensive pair. The third line will consist of Sophomore defenseman Pat Daley. Freshman wing Ken Connelly, and wings Joe Consalvo or Jack Doyle. Congratualtions to Coach Coleman, Capt. Powers, and the rest of the team for a fine season. Vets lead a young FRONT ROW: M Connerty. Consalvo, B. Connerty, Capt. Brian Powers. Golden, Moriello, O ' - Callahan, Murphy. BELOW: “Whaddayamean, red light?” BELOW RIGHT: Driscoll and SOCCER In a league dominated by teams whose strength lay in their many foreign players, Latin stood out as the most “American team. However, this back- ground proved to be a disadvantage. Despite their enthusiasm, Latin’s players lacked the experience of the other teams. In order to overcome this handicap Latin adopted the most aggressive style of play in the league. This approach resulted in many close and roughly-played games, a few hard-earned victories, and a few more heart-breaking losses. Early in the season it was apparent that the city championship was not to be theirs, but the Latin booters continued to hustle and i mproved with each game. Late in the season they found the scoring punch that had been sporadic earlier in the year. In the last two games Latin’s forwards, halfbacks and even the defense executed their play with more pre- cision than ever before and everyone seemed to be able to score. Alas, there were only so many games in the season and the team felt a bit shortchanged as they knew at the end that they had become the equals of any team they had met. For the seniors it seemed to be a disap- pointing final season, but nevertheless, one which they can still look back upon as a time when the joy of competition far outweighed the disappointment of defeat. “Work plus desire did not equal success for the 1971 B.L.S. The depth of the team showed in this particular meet as well as in others during the long season. Rick Spry and Neil Costello set records in the 100 yard butterfly, 50 yard freestyle, and the 160 and 200 yard indi- vidual medley respectively. Latin’s relay of Costello, Spry, Flaherty and Jerry Connors also set records in the 200 and 400 yard freestyle relay. Having lost a total of 29 runners through graduation or transfer, the purple prancers made up a young but still formi- dable team. The team mounted a 9-1 regular season record, beating strong teams such as English, Rindge. and B.C. High while losing only to Technical. The captains this year were city champ miler Fred Carey, hurdler Greg McBride and dashman Paul Paget. Fred Williams and Dave Flynn ran strong 300’s while Mike Gervino provided the power in the shotput along with Mike Elliot. Larry O ' Donnell was featured in the dash. The bulk of the team consisted of underclassmen Nate Borum, Bob O ' Leary, Paul Thomas, Bill Burn- ham. Steve Holbrook, Don Simi, Bruce McKinnon and Chuck Carroll. Managers Kelly, Surel and Harri- son have been valuable all year. Special thanks go to coach Freddy Irons for having the patience required to produce a fine track team. Most successful cross-country coaches say that there are two types of cross-country runners, the artistic type and the scientific type. The artistic type of runner runs to win. Although he would like his time to improve and would be disappointed if it did not, his first thought is that of winning. On the other hand, the “scientist” is mainly concerned with time. He knows just where along the course he should be at a certain time and just how hard he must run to im- prove his time. The scientific runner prefers to run at a pace while most artistic types like to go out fast and hang on to the lead. If a “scientist” comes in third with an im- proved time, he’s satisfied; while and “artist” who runs third is disappointed. Usually Latin’s cross-country team is made up of an equal number of artistic and scientific types — the ideal situation. This year, however, the team seemed to be com- prised largely of “scientists”. The result was a mediocre season, although a winning one. This year’s captains were Fred Carey and Jim Pearson, injured in the last half of the season, who along with Paul Hardiman completed the senior roster. Next year, with Bob O’Leary, Bill Coakley, Don Simi, Mike Caruso, Steve Hol- brook, Paul D’Amato and Bob Williams returning, Latin should have the experience to get back on top. Special recognition should be given to sophomore Bob Williams who was a medalist in the C.M.I. sophomore race. Crew • After a disappointing season last spring noted only for the lack of races caused by a shortage of oars, the crew team had an outstanding fall season. The team was strong with many re- turning lettermen. There were three races in the fall season with Latin, Tech, English and South Boston com- peting. The first two races were won easily by Latin. In the third race Latin barely edged out a strenghthened Tech team giving the Latin nine a per- fect record. Under Coach Vara’s lead- ership the team has been a consistent winner in recent years. This year there were eight seniors on the team. Ed Shanahan was first boat coxswain for his fourth consecu- tive year. John Moynihan, John Cotillo and Frank Gens, the tri-captains again, had strong seasons along with Paul Scavotto, George Walker, Phil Ferzoco and Bob Evans. STUDENT COUNCIL President: Rich O ' Mara Vice President: Robert Vazza Secretary: Bruce McKinnon Treasurer: Randy Showstack Sgt. at Arms: John Higgins 132 Deliberation Mr. Mosher Pres. Rich O ' Mara The main theme of this year ' s Student Council was better representation of all factions of the stu- dent body. To accomplish this goal the council voted to allow special representation of minority groups in order to avert the possibility of racial unrest, to hold open meetings, and to conduct polls of the student body concerning major issues. Classes five and six were represented for the first time in this year ' s council. The first half of the year was spent amending the by-laws of the organization. Attendance rules were changed and a Student Council treasury became a reality. These changes were made in hopes of strengthening the councils of future years. “When I think of all we have done, I am proud. When I think of all we could have done, I am humble.” Richard F. Several of the tra- ditional projects such as the WBZ 700 Fund and frequent school clean-ups were carried out with great success. The Bookstore Committee takes extreme pride in their maintenance of the newly- decorated store. Because of a large, young membership the Key Club can depend upon greater achievement in future years in both The New England District and International. 4 CLUB OFFICERS — PRES. — Rich Kadzis VICE PRES. — Jim Olson SEC. — John Hamano TREAS. — Charlie Hills DISTRICT OFFICERS — LT. Bowling Club LIFE EXAMINED Dedication to the cause The Boston Latin School Yearbook Staff has spent this past year hard at work preparing a treatise on the meaning of life as seen from a Senior’s position. Here after hours of hard work, days of preparation and years of anticipation we present “The Meaning”. Death is Nature ' s way of telling you to slow down. Wisdom is a booby prize, Given when you ' ve been unwise. You can lead a chicken to boiling water but you can’t make him jump into the soup. I ' d rather have two girls of 17, than one of 34. If virtue can ' t be mine alone, At least my faults. Can be my own. Metaphorical amalgam: There comes a time in the affairs of young men when they must cut, get, and face; out, down to, and up to; the nonsense, the business, and the situation. Half of life is if. If you want to know. Where your money went, You must spend it quickly, Before it’s spent. Equussapiens: Ever see a horse at a pari-mutuel window? A Classic is something that everybody wants to have read, but nobody wants to read. People are self-centered, To a nauseous degree. They will talk on about themselves, While I’m explaining me. A man ' s bewilderment is the measure of his wisdom. Opportunity knocks only once, but temptation leans on the bell. When your thirst and hunger cease, May your body rest in peace. The trouble with the future is that it arrives before we’re ready for it. 139 ROW 1: St. Martin, Moroney, Paget, Flaherty, Lydon, FitzGerald, Donovan (V Pres), coach Costello, Cronin (Pres), Mazares (sec), Hanna, Survillo, Byrne. JUNIORS Scholarship, service, character and leadership are the prerequisites for membership in the National Honor Society. Under the guidance of Mr. Jackrriauh, this year’s members of the Boston Latin School Chap- ter demonstrated these four qualities. On December 17, 1971, twenty-two members of Class II were inducted into the National Honor Society to bring our total membership to one hundred. We were privileged to have as our guest speaker, Dr. Al- bert J. Kelley, former Director of the National Aero- nautic and Space Administration.
