Liber Actorum Boston Latin School Boston, Massachusetts EDITORS-IN-CHIEF ADVISORS Mr. Frank E. Hannigan Mr. William J. Powers Michael A. Lawsky William J. Parna Praeceptores Studentes Primani Res Athleticae Ordinationes Scholasticae Dedicated to . . . Miss Taylor has been in the Latin School, serving its medicinal needs for over twenty- oneyears. Herwarmsmile has greeted many an ill senior, seeking for a place to catch a couple of Z ' s . Over the past two decades. Miss Taylor has encountered many of the diseases common to the Latin School such as Senioritis, Fractured Trousers, and Quiz- itis , and has treated them with the greatest success. Her office was always open to any ill student, and her presence will be deeply missed. We wish Miss Taylor a long and happy retirement, and we hope the new nurse can live up to her high standards. Frances Taylor 4 . For the better part of two decades, Mr. Clark has served the Latin School as a member of the French and Guidance Departments. Having weathered these past years with patience and understanding, Mr. Clark has helped to preserve the traditional Latin School. His devotion and untiring efforts have set superior ex- amples for the school. The Boston Latin School observes with mixed feelings the retirement of Mr. Clark, gratitude for his work, regret for his departure. Wallace Clark 5 Change • • • . . . is always with us for better or worse. Boston is caught in a period of change. Well known as a historical and cultural center, it is now taking on a modern air. For three hundred and thirty-six years The Latin School has been a part of Boston. Throughout the history of Boston Latin School, Boston has undergone constant change: revolution, civil war, trade expansion, cultural growth, and scientific development. Boston Latin School has strived for excellence and has pro- duced the great leaders necessary to make such changes successful. What is one of the oldest and most traditioned cities will soon become one of the Nation ' s newest-looking. Towering structures pierce its sky. Everywhere there is a sharp and sometimes humorous contrast between old and new. Granite and marble give way to steel and glass. Rubble from condemned tenements lays the foundation for new commercial centers. Gothic buildings see their doom in their futuristic neighbors. Remnants of the old mixed with the arrival of the new depict a changing Boston. As Boston changes so will The Latin School. 10 12 mm ' ■j - • vri: s ' Ira ' S -! ;:;, ; , , - ugmainir nliuMH 1 •jipip wjiiwtiTtawMUU’ ! T rr r iiTiKttir-: v ! CT !r H B3 Jr i i B ! I Wilfred L. GENTLEMEN: Nicholas Murray Butler, late president of Columbia University, once said that Education truly conceived is spiritual growth toward intellectual and moral perfection, and is not an artificial process to be carried on according to mechanical formulas to a purely material end. There are utilities higher and utilities lower, and if a school in its zeal to fit the youth for self-support were to neglect to lay the foundation for that higher intellectual and spiritual life which constitutes humanity ' s full stature, it would sacrifice the higher utilities to the lower. Fortunately, the class of 1971, along with legions of past graduates, has received a training in the Humanities based on spiritual growth toward intellectual and moral perfec- tion. Because of this education, you are fortified with knowledge and the know-why which will enable you to live the good life. Like the Latin school men of the past, you will be able to stand up and be counted upon to do your duty no matter what the cost. Let the cause be just, you will be its defender, thereby inspiring those of lesser moral fiber. You will be leaders in our society of tomorrow, never forgetting the example of the host of leaders whose names adorned our hallowed hall. The latter excelled in many fields of endeavor but they all have one thing in common— a resolute determination to do their duty and excel in the usm Albert J. VanSteenbergen Assistant Headmaster William Devore Assistant Headmaster area of talents with which their Creator so generously endowed them. Plato tells us, For a man to conquer himself is the first and best of all victories. The long hard road through the Latin School which you have traversed proves the Philoso- pher ' s statement. You have done this by acquiring SELF DISCIPLINE, the sine-qua-non for success in life. You have the Humanities to thank for that priceless virtue. Be never unmindful of the debt you owe your Masters, parents, and the good people of the City of Boston who made it possible for you to enjoy the privilege of attending this venerable institution. Be loyal to B.L.S., aid her in every way, make her cause your cause. Make it a goal to help future Latin School boys to achieve a college educa- tion by being a generous donor to the Scholarship Funds. Senior Class Officers Thomas J. O ' Mara Vice-President H. Charles Hambelton Secretary Alfred O. Lussier T reasurer M PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE We, the members of the class of 1971 have reached the end of our days as students at the Boston Latin School and have taken our places among the alumni. In looking back to what is past, we can be justly proud of our record of achievement. By remaining true to the Latin School tradition of dissent with responsibility, we have made the voice of the students respected and re- sponded to. We have brought about important and con- structive change at the School; and at the same time, we have preserved the traditions and characteristics that make a Latin School education not only outstanding but unique. In looking ahead, we are secure in the knowledge that our Latin School experience has prepared us to meet the Paul D. Hogan, President Chrmn. Paul E. Nicholas John F. Balliro Tessil J. Collins challenges of our uncertain future. We realize that we do not have the answers to the major problems facing our society today; but we are willing and able to do our part in working toward their solution and making the world a better place in which to live. On behalf of the Class of 1971, I extend our thanks and appreciation to all of those who have made our graduation possible, especially our parents, teachers, and the people of Boston. To the members of the Class of 1971, I extend my congratulations and sincere wishes for every success and happiness in the years ahead. Paul D. Hogan 41 Peter F. Kadzis Class Committee John B. Casey Alan B. Feinberg Richard L. Travaglino THE BOSTON LATIN SCHOOL CLASS OF 1971 Much has been said about Boston Latin School, as an educational institution and as a breeder of outstanding men. T he school boasts of an alumni body that includes famous names of men such as Charles Bulfinch, George Santayana, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thomas Paine, and Samuel Adams. The list of names is long and the list of their achievements is longer; but these names and these achievements are parts of Boston Latin School of the past. The list of students that follows here represents Boston Latin School of 1971. Whether these graduates become a part of the outstanding tradition that has characterized this school, will be the task of history to decide. Boston Latin School, despite its much-heralded tradi- tion, has not been oblivious to the turbulence which has characterized the social and educational pictures in America in the past few years. The most obvious change has been in the role of the student. Working through the student council and the senior class officers, the Class of 1971 has set a new Latin School precedent by managing its own affairs. These students have been affected by change, and have effected change. What will become of these students in the future is unknown. The future will be a test both for these students personally, and also a test for Boston Latin School. Chuck PAUL GERARD AMBROSE Entered class VI from St. Thomas Aquinas School. JOHN PHILLIP ERLICK THEODORE LENTO ROBERT BRUCE McLAUGHLIN STEVEN PAUL MEANY 85 An explosive offense- A ruthless defense . . . THE YEAR OF THE PURPLE A Boston newspaper, early in October, called this foot- ball season The Year of the Purple . It couldn ' t have been more correct. The B.L.S. football squad captured the city champion- ship and finished unbeaten with a record of 8-0-1. The Wolfpack had to come from behind in its four biggest games, giving leads of 6-0 to Newton South, 16-0 to B. C. High and 8-0 to arch rival English before coming back to win. The Wolfpack spotted Brookline a 14-0 lead before coming back to tie. Head Coach Cecil Howie Smith and his assistants Paul Costello, Don Pelligrini, and Preston Johnston combined a big play offense which averaged twenty-three points per game and a hard hitting defense which allowed but eleven points per game. Co-captain Paul Nicholas at center anchored an offensive The Toe boots one against Tech. line which alternated Gene Nazzaro and Marty Lydon at left guard and had Dave Mockapetris at left tackle, Al Lussier at right tackle, and Gene Survillo at right guard. All-everything Fran Cronin and Big Charlie Hambelton at the ends were both excellent pass receivers. Quarterback John Casey headed an excellent backfield consisting of Gordon Jones at half-back, Mike Moroney at slotback with Jamie McCarthy, Greg McBride and Billy Burnham alternat- ing at fullback. The defensive line consisting of ends Pat Flaherty and Henry Grilli, tackles T.J. O ' Mara and Dan Fitzgerald and middle guards Paul Nicholas and Gene Survillo harassed the opposing quarterbacks while linebackers Gene Nazzaro, Marty Lydon and Eddie Sullivan scored an enormous number of keeshes (hard hits) on all opposing players. Co-captain Eddie Connor started in the defensive backfield along with Steve McCluskey, Bob O ' Meara and Jim Byrne. Razor determined on the bootleg. Moroney makes grab despite double-coverage 90 McBride busts one. Fine performances were also turned in by seniors Pete McLoughlin, Jim Henderson, and Tessil Collins, Junior Paul Paget, and sophomore Greg Mazares. Congratulations are extended to All-City selections Al Lussier, Dave Mockapetris, Henry Grilli, Marty Lydon, and Paul Nicholas. Congratulations are further extended to All-City, All-Conference selections John Casey who threw ten touchdown passes and master minded Latin ' s offense; Gordon Jones who scored nine touchdowns to lead the team and to defensive captain Eddie Sullivan. Last but not least congratulations go to All-City, All-Conference, All- Scholastic selection Fran Cronin who caught seven touch- down passes and made innumerable clutch grabs. The team wishes the best of luck to next season ' s captains Jim Byrne, Fran Cronin and Marty Lydon who will field another tough and experienced team. Ready for action. LATIN CATCHES E NGLISH IN LAST MINUTE THRILLER 12-8 The 84th Latin-English classic was expected to be a Latin runaway. The Wolfpack was undefeated and heavily favored over an English team which had won only one game. This was not the case, however, as Latin had to come from behind to win 12-8. Latin received the opening kickoff and was stymied by an inspired English defense. Both teams ' defenses were tough and provided for a scoreless first quarter. The second quarter was scoreless as well, with English threatening once. The Blue recovered a Latin fumble on the Purple ' s 18 yard line, but safety Bob O ' Meara saved Latin when he intercepted a pass in his end zone. The defensive battle continued into the second half. English recovered a Latin fumble on Latin ' s 25, only to have Wolfpack Co-captain Ed Connor intercept for Latin at his own 7. Following an exchange of fumbles deep in Latin territory, English scored from ten yards out and scored the two point conversion. With 3:36 to play in the third quarter, English led 8-0. Early in the fourth quarter, Latin ' s Pat Flaherty recover- ed an English fumble on the Blues 22. John Casey passed 20 yards to half-back Gordon Jones and two plays later Jonesy scored from the two to cut the margin to 8-6 with 8:17 left to play. Casey fades back. Connor turns up field. Casey hurls last second bomb . . . The Man behind the team. . . . complete to Cronin for the winning touchdown! THE BIG D. . . . And the CITY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP. English mounted a drive late in the game, moving from their 37 to Latin ' s 37. At this point, English suffered an offside penalty and on the ensuing series of downs, Latin took over with 53 seconds, stopping English on fourth and one at Latin ' s 29. On first down, with no time-outs remaining, quarterback Casey faded back behind excellent blocking then fired a perfect pass to Franny Cronin on the English 30. Franny made the catch and outraced two English defenders for the winning touchdown with only 46 seconds left to play. Gene Survillo recovered an English fumble with 40 seconds left to ice the victory. The game was an exciting climax to an unbeaten season and enabled Latin to win the City Championship. Tremen- dous defensive efforts were extended by tackles Dave Mockapetris and Al Lussier, ends Pat Flaherty and Henry Grilli and linebacker Eddie Sullivan. Quarterback John Casey, end Franny Cronin and halfback Gordon Jones paced the offense. The team thanks Coaches Smith, Costello, Pellegrini and Johnson and Trainer Dan Lyons for all their help and for putting up with us throughout this triffic undefeated season. Tears of Joy. Cross Country CROSS-COUNTRY This year ' s cross-country team enjoyed its most success- ful season in over a decade. The team won both the City and Regimental Championships, the first team to win both titles in many years. The varsity squad, led by tri-captains Tom Duffy, Jack Frawley, and Jay Cigna, along with Fred Carey, Mike Toplyn, Rick Pierce, and Bob Goff, ran to a 7-1 season, losing only to B. C. H igh . But the Latin harriers had their chance for revenge the following week in the City Cham- pionship meet and defeated B.C. H i gh 32-34, for Latin ' s first City Championship. A week later in the Reggies our harriers placed 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 8th to lead Latin to a divisional sweep, placing first with 22 points. Kudos goes to the Girls ' Latin School cheerleaders and Pep Squad. These girls came out to the rain-soaked Regi- mental meet to cheer on our lonely runners. For this the team was very grateful. The team wishes to thank first year coach Fred Irons for his efforts and fine coaching, and also Joe Fielding who helped build this team over the years. Thanks also to our faithful managers Andy Teebagy, Paul McLaughlin and Paul Vaitkus. Once again congratulations on a fine season and good luck next year. After having posted an 8-5-1 record this year, the team cannot help feeling a little frustrated, because each loss was by only a single goal. The team ' s perennial enemy, Rosa- I indale, gave our heroes three of their five losses. Next year when the captain ' s duties will be assumed by Junior Hans Birle (once again the leading scorer), Latin will be avenged by the feet of Bernie Kohler, Dave Marsden, Bill Brennan, John Barry, Charlie Sommer and Co. This year ' s team had determination. Led by senior co-captains Chris Thomas and Bill Fraser, they never slack- ened their attack. The fans appreciated the efforts of both. Feinberg foils opposition. The other members of the team who will not return are Al Feinberg, Don Kenney, and George Traylor who was lost early in the season due to an injury. Considering the disadvantages with which the team had to cope, they produced excellently. They could very well have gone undefeated. Soccer however lacked the student support and interest found in other sports like football. If everyone showed the interest toward the game as did Coach Evans, Pat Groden ' 69, and managers Jim Dawson and Ray Babcock, the team could have attained a far better record and a little more self-satisfaction. HOCKEY The B.L.S. hockey team finished the 1971 season with a respectable 6-6-2 record, good enough to capture third place in the City League. Although unable to match the power of South Boston and Charlestown, the Latin squad proved itself superior to the rest of the league, racking up victories against Tech, Eastie, and arch rival English. The starting five of Leo Cushing, Pat O ' Toole, Paul Conroy, Jim Norton, and Captain Eddie Sullivan supplied ample of- fense and defense to make the task of netminder Brian Powers more comfortable. This year ' s indoor track season has proved to be one of the team ' s most thrilling and successful. Led by the fleetfulness of Co-captains Tessil Collins and Jim Repetti, the team brought its season to a close by first culminating a 9-0-1 record. They went to win the Conference Title, tie for the city Championship and the ultimate victory, the Purples ' first Indoor Regimental Title in 15 years. The most outstanding performer on the team was Craig Inge. Craig had an undefeated season and was one of the most valuable members of the squad. The relay team proved to have both the ability and desire to surpass all others. Jim Repetti, Tony Genovese, Craig Inge, and Tessil Collins comprised the most feared section of the Track Team. Other consistent performers were Tom Duffy in the two mile, Fred Carey in the mile. Rick Lawson and Greg McBride in the hurdles and Mike Toplyn, Jim Pierce and Paul Padget. A serious lack of height made it a long season for Latin ' s basketball squad. Rookie coach Paul Costello had Charley Hambelton (6 ' 4) and Rich Carty (6 ' 3) as his biggest men. He therefore put the team through stren- ouous workouts, hoping to take advantage of the squad ' s speed and aggressiveness. All this hard work made for little success however, as the basketball team compiled a 3-10 record. Hambelton and Carty split the center duties in a starting quintet which also included seniors John Casey, the team ' s playmaker, and Mike Grendal; and juniors Franny Cronin and Kevin McCluskey. Sophomore sensation Billy King and John Atkinson also saw considerable action. Juniors Jim Byrne, Danny Donovan, Ray Simmons and Al Tutlys rounded out the squad. Mike Grendal was the team ' s high scorer, and Franny Cronin, a 6 ' 2 leaper, was the leading rebounder. The entire squad wishes to thank coaches Costello, Cohen and McCarthy for their excellent efforts and hopes that next season ' s team, featuring Cronin McCluskey and King, will gain the success it deserves. These two losses, however, were enough to eliminate Latin from competing in the Mass. Coastal League Championships which had been cus- tomary in recent years. Under the guidance of Mr. Flynn, the golf team anticipates a fine spring schedule. Latin ' s Rowers Reign — City Champs Under the capable auspices of coach Carmen Vara, the B.L.S. Crew Team nailed down the city-championship with an undefeated record. Tech was the closet contender, but they could not match the co-ordination and timing of the Latin crew. The Staff of the This year for the first time since the conception of the three hundred year old Liber Actorum, we are not going to bore you with hogwash. We see no reason for you to have to read what some idiot has to say about the long hours, tedious work and endless deadlines. No sirree!! Nobody jumped over tall build- ings with a single bound to get to the printer on time. Nobody really went out of their way to make it a smashing success. When there were classes to go to and tests to take did the almighty Liber Actorum staff rush off? You bet your yearbook they did. Did? DID! Among the idle minds found each day in room 032— home of the Liber Actorum— were Mike Lawsky, co-ordinator of Chaos; Bill Parna, the epitome of patience; Gerry Fong, our faculty editor who ended up doing all the work; David Thurm, singing When are we going to do some work around here 7 ; Gordon Lundberg, who managed to draw himself out of many a classroom; Tessil Collins, who started his Liber Actorum career by saying Hi, I ' m on your yearbook staff ; Peter Kadzis, the only literate editor of the staff, Ed Sullivan, our jock editor; John Desmond, our quiet and dedicated worker and as always Paul Hogan. The history of the Latin School has been accented by significant achievements. These achievements have been accomplished by students from all communities, races, and religions. However a very minute number of Black students have existed at the Latin school. The res ultant fact is that the accomplishments of the black student at Latin have been substantial yet rather unknown. This year, we the members of the Afro-Asian Club, have undertaken programs that are directly beneficial to the school as well as to us. We have initiated tutorial and guidance programs for underclassmen in our club. We have also constructed tutorial programs for Black Today. students in our communities who wish to take the en- trance examination to the Latin School. These students will not only better themselves but also benefit their communities and their people. We feel that by constructively improving our school and its environment, by introducing ourselves to subjects such as Black history and culture, and by communicat- ing the accomplishments of Black people before and during our time, we can better understand and respect each other, regardless of whether we have a different complexion or nationality. 1 18 Asian Cultures Club President Harvey Yee This was the first year of existence for the Asian Cultures Vice-President Marvin Gee Club. During the course of the year, the club strived to provide Treasurer Thluey Woo an appreciation of Asian Culture among its members. Declamation The Public Declamation has had a long and honored history at the Boston Latin School. Six Public Declamations are held during the year, to which each class is invited successively. Students from all classes compete in recitations of prose and poetry. The final Public Declamation of each school year is known as the Prize Declamation. This is attended and judged by members of the fiftieth and twenty-fifth year reunion classes of the school. Prize medals are awarded at this compe- tition. Students are encouraged to compete in Public Declama- tion, for it affords an opportunity to develop skill and poise in public speaking. The quest: to see if a drug course for students run by students could work. It ' s easy to make believe that drugs aren ' t a problem in your community, in your school and in your family, but to face the truth shows a special type of maturity, awareness and realization. The effort put into drug education is proof that a serious attempt can be made to learn about a major problem confronting our society today. The members thank Mr. Russel and Mr. Jackman for their time, effort, ideas and genuine concern for this club. 129 Forensic The Forensic Society concentrated its efforts this year in building up a solid core of young, able speakers and debat- ers. Afternoon classes twice a week in public speaking and debating were instituted in the fall. These classes, conduct- ed by members of the Debate Squad, ran for two semesters. In addition to debating intramurally after school, partici- pation in tournaments and speech contests were encouraged for the young members. Though the new schedule did present problems, the Society has still been able to conduct an efficient program to give the members meaningful en- richment in the modes of communication and persuasion. This is a pretty good explanation of its activities. The club is by no means concerned with teaching advanced fields of mathematics. Rather, talks are given, by the members themselves, on any aspect of mathematics which seems interesting and or un- usual. One topic discussed earlier in the year was the possibility of betting on a sure thing in sports. The team is right near the top again this year, and is confidently looking forward to success in the upcoming contests, as well as in the league and state playoffs. The members of the team, who are chosen on the basis of their mathematical ability, are: Senior Co-captains Mark Seliber and Gary Palter; Ju- niors Guy Steele and Robert Moses; and Sophomores Rich- ard Stern and Philip Jameson. We sent delegates to represent foreign countries at Model UNs held at Harvard and Brandeis and we represented states at a Model Congress in North Haven, Connecticut. Those students involved received a working knowledge of international diplomacy and the school received honors and awards won by our delegations. Occasional guest speakers enlightened us as to the different aspects of philately. The year was climaxed with our Third Annual Philatelic Exhibition , which was held last April in the library. 1970-71 proved to be a very successful year for us, but one man is mainly responsible — our sponsor, Mr. Pheeny. Most of this year ' s program has been devoted to the initial stages of a Model Cities of the Future Plan, which will develop and mature further in the subsequent years of the Society. The plan, basically, is to develop an ideal type of city for the future, keeping in mind the current trends in technology and sociology and also working towards the eventual elimination of our cities ' problems.
