RIDER STAFF The commuter student has been rediscovered at BC this year. That commuters should have ever even required rediscovering is a little ironical since, after all, it was to serve Boston ' s Irish Catholic residents that BC was founded. But commuters have been consistently overlooked and ignored in the intensive post-war effort to attract a large resident population and build a national reputation for BC. To the commuter, college is little more than an extension of high school. Whereas the resident student is forced to meet and interact with other students, the commuter is not. Administrators and other interested individuals felt it was necessary for BC to create an environ- ment where that interaction and socialization could take place. Lyons Cafeteria simply did not provide that atmosphere - hopefully, the Com- muter Center in Murray House will. There are other signs too pointing to a more general agreement on the importance of com- muters at BC — such as increased efforts to recruit local high school students (especially the successful day visit program) is another. How serious is the University ' s committment to com- muters and how effective the attempts to improve commuter life will be, only time and the com- muter will tell. MURRAY HOUSE 131

UGBC Cabinet meeting in O ' Connell. The Undergraduate Government of Boston College (UGBC) exists as the primary representa- tive of student interests on campus. As the representative of student interests, the UGBC sees itself as the negotiating or bargaining agent of the student body. To this end it employs three tools: Negotiation with the University; input into Uni- versity governing bodies; and direct action by the UGBC. The proper use of these tools by UGBC insures that the quality of student life improves and that students be given a strong voice in the educational process. 132
