Dear Graduates of the Class of 1953: As I write these words my memory recalls the fact that lt is now forty years since I was graduated from Boston College High School. As an older alumnus, I have some reflections which I wish to share with you. I know that you will pardon the personal references as coming from an older brother as much as from your spiritual father who has fond recollections of Alma Hater message to the graduates of 1953 is a witness to the gratitude whlch I have always felt towards ou Alma Hater durlnc the four decades s'nce I approacked, as you do now, that happy day of Graduation You will soon enter an adult world xhich lies beyond the realm of youthful school days and dreams In this adult world, you will be expected to accept your full share of the responsibilities and privilefes of Christian manhood To that world, some of rou will appear as potential servicemen d6d4C8t6Q to the protection of our beloved nation To that world, I, too, appeared in 1913 as a potentlal sold er called to the service of Christ and His Church what I learned at Bo ton Colle e High School has supported me through the years, ever slnce, in fact, I left its hallowed nalls As a kind, wise, and affectionate mother, sne taught me the classics which develop the intellect She dlscipllned my mind and will through rigorous classroom standards She lnculcated in me a deep love of countrx, a love based on the tG8CHlD5S of the Founding Fathers, a love rooted in Christlan ldeals and strengthened by Christian fortitude Alma Hater has done all this for ,ou as she dld it for ne In addition, she has made our souls strong by spirltual exercises She has inspired us wlth the beauty of Chrlstian worship She has provlded lofty inspiration for da'ly Christian livlng through her exenplar , self 8CPlflClHS teachers who have devoted their lives to tde Apostolate of Catholic Lducation Forty years after my graduation and at the beginning 33 ' fir t, let us together humbly return thanks to Alma Nater QBYXK training which she has given us, a training which, with Go W EN h s prepared us for the vocation to which He has called us f? 4' tion no be fulfilled in the years ahead ','Q E QM , Congratulations and Tay God and H18 Blessed Mother be 5 J o E ' in all your ways! Looking back upon those freshly written pages, with under- standable satisfaction and pride, you realize how quickly the years passg how fleeting can be fameg how fickle can be fortune, how imperative is knowledge, how eternal is eternity. No matter where your paths may lead you in the future, no matter whether the chapters of your life to come be drab and drear, or grand and glorious, you are basically prepared to meet whatever vicissitudes may be in store for you. The well-rounded education you have received will be your comfort and guide all during your remaining years. Through its accomplished educators, whose lives are dedicated to the service of God, you have learned that the frantic pursuit of material things brings victory which, all too often, is both fruitless and hollow. I wish each of the graduates of 1953 the kind of success in life which will be an influence for good on your fellowman, and which will earn for each of you enduring, never-ending happiness in the life to come.
